B.O. update: 'Badmaash Company' starts off very well

Badmaash Company After HOUSE FULL opened to an excellent start last week, it was the turn of BADMAASH COMPANY to open to a heartening start at the box-office. Shahid Kapoor's last major release CHANCE PE DANCE [not counting PAATHSHAALA] had fetched a below average start, so it was imperative that BADMAASH COMPANY fetch a good start at the ticket window. The opening numbers of BADMAASH COMPANY were an impressive 80% to 90% at places, while at places it ranged from 45% to 75%, which only improved towards the evening shows.

The opening weekend of BADMAASH COMPANY is expected to be better, given the fact that the film has tremendous youth appeal and that in turn should witness an escalation in business. Overall, the film should have a very good weekend, which reinforces Yash Raj and Shahid's pull at the ticket window.

The second release of the week, IT'S A WONDERFUL AFTERLIFE, had a disastrous start at the box-office. The opening was in 5% to 10% range and since the reports are terrible, the numbers are not expected to show a major jump on Saturday and Sunday.

B.O. update: 'Rocket Singh' opens to shockingly low response

Everyone was expecting ROCKET SINGH - SALESMAN OF THE YEAR to start with a bang, given the fact that Ranbir Kapoor's last two films, WAKE UP SID and AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI, had fetched a flying start. Also, the fact that Aditya Chopra, Shimit Amin and Jaideep Sahni had teamed up with Ranbir, only raised the expectations from the film. But the poor start of ROCKET SINGH sent shock waves within the industry. The film had a 20% to 40% start at certain plexes and at places, 10% to 15% start.

The reports are extremely mixed and it remains to be seen if the film picks up on Saturday and Sunday, like Yash Raj's previous two biggies, CHAK DE INDIA and RAB NE BANA DI JODI.

B.O. update: 'Paa' starts slow, picks up, 'Radio' is dull

The two new releases, PAA and RADIO, started on a slow note on Friday. PAA, of course, had a better start, with the film opening to a 30% response at several plexes. The occupancy picked up by noon shows and the film was in the 60% + range towards the evening shows at plexes of major centres.

The advantage with PAA is, the film is carrying excellent reports and a jump in business is expected on Saturday and Sunday. One will have to wait for the Saturday and Sunday figures to ascertain the jump in collections.

On the other hand, RADIO had a poor start at the ticket window. The opening collections were 10% to 15%, while the reports are weak.

B.O. update: 'Ajab' takes ghazab start; 'Jail' gets sidelined

AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI took the nation by storm by fetching one of the biggest starts at the box-office. The start was at par with LOVE AAJ KAL at several screens, although LAK had more shows than APKGK, since LONDON DREAMS has retained some screens, while JAIL, the other new release, has also opened quite wide.

The trends were evident on Thursday night itself, when the paid previews of AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI were held. The response was fantastic. The early morning shows opened to an overwhelming response and the film was maintaining the tempo during the subsequent shows. The opening is at par with any superstar's film, the various distributors/exhibitors this writer spoke to, echoed in unison.

The youth has taken to AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI in a big way and the first weekend numbers of the film should be incredible. It's easily Ranbir Kapoor's biggest opener to date and catapults him to the 'Prime Club'. Besides, the Ranbir - Katrina jodi seems to be the new flavour of the season. Rajkumar Santoshi too has bounced back with renewed vigour, while Ramesh Taurani, its producer, has yet another Hit to his credit.

On the other hand, JAIL has been sidelined due to the AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI wave. The film carries favourable reports, so let's hope its numbers show a jump on Saturday and Sunday.

Film’s earnings have surpassed all expectations

Director Vishal Bharadwaj's dark thriller "Kaminey" has turned out to be a goldmine, earning about Rs.330 million in its first weekend at the box office.

Produced by UTV Motion Pictures, the fast-paced crime drama, released on Aug 14, has made good business despite the fact that it wasn't released in major cities of Maharashtra the same day due to swine flu scare.

"Kaminey" was released worldwide with 1,200 prints and it hit theatres in Maharashtra on Aug 17.

"The film has surpassed all expectations with the kind of business it did in the first weekend of its release and critical acclaim that it has generated in India and around the world," said Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO, UTV Motion Pictures.

"The success of 'Kaminey' is testament to what can be achieved when you bring together a visionary director, talented cast and crew, compelling script, great production values, aggressive marketing and sound distribution strategy," added Kapur.

B.O. update: 'Kaminey' opens with a bang, 'Life Partner' picks up

As expected, KAMINEY opened to an excellent response, garnering one of the best openings in recent times. Vishal Bhardwaj + Shahid Kapoor + 'Dhan Te Nan' have done the trick. The film is being liked immensely by the youth. The first day collections, excluding Mumbai and Pune, should be huge. Today [15th August] being Independence Day holiday, the business is expected to be superb again.

On the other hand, LIFE PARTNER had a 25% to 30% start across various screens. The film was affected due to the KAMINEY wave, but the business picked up from noon onwards. The 3 p.m. shows showed a jump at several screens and the evening and night shows were even better. The film is being liked by family audiences.

B.O. update: 'Agyaat' best at single screens, 'Teree Sang' has an edge

Both AGYAAT and TEREE SANG competed for audience attention this Friday. While AGYAAT was strong at single screens -- 60% to 70% -- the numbers at plexes weren't too encouraging [20% +]. On the other hand, TEREE SANG sprung a pleasant surprise by fetching a better start at plexes. The reports are positive and the film is expected to grow with a strong word of mouth. Saturday and Sunday, of course, hold the key.

The youth has taken to TEREE SANG and have appreciated the subject as also the lead pair of the film. However, the ending of AGYAAT has come in for sharp criticism from several places. The silver lining is, both AGYAAT and TEREE SANG are low-cost fares and wouldn't find it tough to recover their investments.

B.O. update: 'Love Aaj Kal' has superb start in India, Pakistan, UAE

Love Aaj KalThe much-hyped LOVE AAJ KAL opened to a stupendous start across all multiplexes. The film is being screened in 20, 23, 25, even 28 shows everyday at prominent multiplexes, which is a record of starts. The first day business was huge across multiplexes, although the single screens weren't as strong [expectedly]. But there's no reason to press the panic button, since 70% to 80% business is generated from multiplexes alone these days.

The reports of LOVE AAJ KAL are good, the audience feedback is positive and the opening weekend is expected to be humungous. In fact, the first weekend numbers of the film should easily find a place amongst the biggest openers ever. Another advantage is the Raksha Bandhan holiday on Wednesday [5th August], which will add that extra revenue to the booty.

LOVE AAJ KAL has cost Rs. 42 crores to its producers [Saif Ali Khan and Dinesh Vijan] and with P & A costs included, the final cost works out to approx. Rs. 48 crores [for Eros]. A major chunk of business is expected to be recovered from the domestic market, while Overseas is expected to be huge as well. In fact, the Thursday night shows in Pakistan were bigger than that of KAMBAKKHT ISHQ. Even UAE was higher than KAMBAKKHT ISHQ, where LOVE AAJ KAL collected approx. 6,50,000 Dirhams on its first day.

One awaits with bated breath for its response in U.K. and U.S.A. 'Bollywood Hungama' will keep you updated with the developments, with official figures.

"The response is amazing. Even the 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. shows in Gujarat are running to packed houses," Devang Sampat of Cinemax informs me.

B.O. update: 'Short Kut' has poor start, reports negative

Rekha The new release, SHORT KUT, started on a dismal note, fetching a 20% - 25% start at several screens. While a few single screens in Maharashtra were in the 40% range, the overall start is way below expectations, given the fact that some of the biggest names in the business are associated with the film. Also, the reports are outright negative and the film is not likely to show an escalation in business.

The other two releases, SANKAT CITY and MORNING WALK, also opened to extremely poor houses, although SANKAT CITY is expected to show an increase in business since the reports and reviews, both are positive.

B.O. update II: 'Kambakkht Ishq' amongst biggest openers

Believe it or not, a KAMBAKKHT ISHQ mania has swept across the nation. The film has opened to an overwhelming response and at the end of Day 1, it was clear that the film would surpass the opening weekend business of SINGH IS KINNG and at places, would be at par with GHAJINI, especially in North India. In fact, the film could well turn out to be Akshay's biggest opener so far. While the industry response is mixed [like always… what's new about it?], the audience feedback is very positive.

'New York' makes money across the world

Producers say movie top earner in UAE for 2009

Yash Raj Films' "New York" that sees director Kabir Khan tackling an unconventional and serious subject has brought much-needed respite to the box office by grossing Rs.350 million worldwide over the three-day weekend.

"New York", released worldwide on Friday (June 26), is about three friends whose lives change post the 9/11 terror attacks on the Twin Towers. It stars John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan in pivotal roles.

The movie that hit over 900 screens across the world had promising advance bookings and continued to register more demand from the audience after the first day of its release.

According to Tushar Dhingra, COO, BIG Cinemas, the film "opened very soundly and is giving good results".

"It has proved to be a strong box office ledge for multiplexes. After a long, long time, this movie has been able to pull the crowds to the cinema halls again," Dhingra told IANS.

Apart from its success in India, "New York" has also garnered positive response from movie buffs in the US, Britain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where it was released across around 60, 40 and 30 cinema halls respectively.

The movie has opened at the number three slot on the Australian charts and 10 in Britain at the weekend. It was the top earner in UAE for 2009, said a press release by Yash Raj Films.

B.O. update:- '8x10 Tasveer' is dull, reports negative

The new Akshay Kumar starrer 8 x 10 TASVEER had a dull start at most multiplexes, garnering a 30% - 40% start at major plexes across the country. At certain places, the response was below that. However, the film was poor at most single screens. The industry feels that the film should've had a better start at plexes due to two reasons: [i] Holiday on Friday and [ii] Paucity of big releases since last few weeks.

However, the reports are negative, with people not liking the second half. The film is not likely to show a big jump during the weekend.

B.O. update: 'Billu' starts slow, but actual test on Sat./Sun.

The much-awaited BILLU opened to a tepid response of 25% to 35% at various screens across the nation. However, the silver lining is that the film is enjoying positive reports and the next two days [Saturday and Sunday] will be crucial. Most exhibitors aren't surprised with the slow start, since it was evident from the promotion that the story revolves around Irrfan and that it wasn't the conventional SRK film, like OM SHANTI OM.

The other two releases, THE STONEMAN MURDERS and JUGAAD, have also opened with dull collections.
