'Dil Bole Hadippa' is so contrasting to 'Kaminey', says Shahid

It is ‘very much in the space of commercial genre'

The promos of "Dil Bole Hadippa" are centred on Rani Mukerji, giving an impression that the film mainly tells her story, but Shahid Kapur maintains that it's not a woman-centric film.

"Honestly, I don't think 'Dil Bole Hadippa' is a woman-oriented subject. Of course, Rani has a very, very important role in the film and when you see it you will realise yourself how both of us actually fit into the storyline," Shahid told IANS.

The actor, who had hectic schedules before and after the release of dark thriller "Kaminey", is now busy promoting Anurag Singh's "Dil Bole Hadippa". But he admits that he could let down his hair more often during the shooting of "...Hadippa" when compared to Vishal Bharadwaj's "Kaminey".

"Seriously, 'Dil Bole Hadippa' is so contrasting to 'Kaminey'...in terms of genre, setting, performances, space, treatment and audiences. The film is very much in the space of the commercial genre. It is an out-and-out entertainer with a Punjabi background to it. Playing Rohan was not as challenging as enacting the role of Charlie or Guddu. After a 'Dhan Te Nan', it was a lot of fun to be indulging in some 'bhangra shangra'!" Shahid said.

Made under the Yash Raj Films banner, "Dil Bole Hadippa" also stars Anupam Kher, Rakhi Sawant and Vrajesh Hirjee. The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Sunday (Sept 13) and is set to hit screens in India on Friday (Sept 18).

Shahid, who will also be seen in Ken Ghosh's "Chance Pe Dance", is happy to be playing a young lover boy.

"By god's grace I have been accepted by audiences in my romantic avtar; so why let that go? A movie like 'Kaminey' or a 'Dil Bole Hadippa' only helps further in getting a contrast. Your value as an actor is realised due to the contrast you bring in," he said.

"Now look at 'Jab We Met'. I was an introvert there and the role was so different. Audiences gave me a thumbs up there and they did so for 'Kaminey' as well. But, frankly, after a point in time I don't want to start gauging audiences' reaction too much. Instead I wish to follow my instincts and give them what I feel could be a real value add," Shahid said.

Doesn't the actor in him now look out for only performance-based roles after "Kaminey"?

"Honestly, I would love to do different kind of films. I can't be getting or doing 'Kaminey' all the time. To even think in that direction would be unfair. After all such a role can come to any actor may be once in a couple of years," Shahid said.

Priyanka gets herself a new sports car

A holiday is also on the agenda

Priyanka Chopra is busy celebrating the success of “Kaminey” and does not want to leave any opportunity to pamper herself after working very hard over the last year or so.

She has booked a brand new sports car which happens to be a limited edition piece.

Even though it wasn’t very easy to purchase it, she managed to somehow get her hands on it.

Priyanka would not be selling her old car as it was her very first car after she entered Bollywood. She is very attached to it and will keep it forever.

Priyanka said that the old car will always remind her of her struggle during her initial days in the industry and how hard she has worked to be able to be in the position to buy the new car.

Meanwhile, the actress is jetting off to Bali, Indonesia, for a short holiday with her girl pals. On returning, she’ll plunge herself into the promotional activities of her next release “What’s Your Rashee?”, which will hit the cinema halls on September 25.

Shahid to hire personal bodyguards

The actor is being mobbed by fans

Can superstardom prove to be costly for an actor's life? Well, Shahid Kapoor surely thinks so. The actor has apparently hired bodyguards now.

After the success of Kaminey, Shahid's fan following has increased by leaps and bounds. Post the release of the film, when the actor visited a multiplex, he was mobbed by his screaming fans. So much so that, Shahid ended up losing his expensive sunglasses, and his metallic coffee flask was actually broken thanks to the out of control fans.

Reports are that his spot boy, make-up artist, manager and publicist are almost doubling up as his bodyguards, struggling to keep him and themselves secure at public events.

This incident lead Shahid to seriously consider hiring personal bodyguards.

When contacted, Shahid confirmed the news. "Yes, I am currently in talks with some security agencies so as to make sure my team's security is taken care of at such times."

Looks like Shahid has now truly joined the big league!

Shahid-Priyanka on a spin!

The grapevine says that Shahid Kapoor has made enquiries about the latest high end cars that have just arrived in India.

A source from the Mumbai showroom says that Shahid was among the first to evince an interest in getting these fancy wheels, and though the car costs something to the tune of crores, he has asked for quotations.

Surprise, surprise when Priyanka Chopra heard us discussing the matter of Shahid’s choice of a new car, she quickly said, “I don’t think he is buying that model, at least not yet. If he was buying it, I would know.” Ahem, ahem, naturally she would probably be the first girl he would take out for a spin.

Four recent hits heal Bollywood’s wounds

Profits finally catching up with the losses

Energetic openings to Bollywood's four recent releases - "New York", "Kambakkht Ishq", "Love Aaj Kal" and "Kaminey" - have succeeded in getting the business perk up. Wounded by a long strike earlier this year, the film industry is perhaps on a self-healing path now, say trade pundits.

The two-month-long stand-off between the producers-distributors and multiplex owners over revenue sharing, which was resolved on June 5, led to a whopping Rs.300 crore (Rs.3 billion) loss to the Hindi film industry.

The dry spell was broken by Kabir Khan's "New York" that released on June 26 followed by the other three films - "Kambakkht Ishq" that came on July 3, "Love Aaj Kal" on July 31 and "Kaminey" on Aug 14 - raking in a net profit close to almost half the losses so far this year.

"These four films will do a net business of Rs.150 crore (Rs.1.5 billion) put together," revealed an industry insider.

Said trade analyst Taran Adarsh: "The industry is definitely on a recovery path... it is getting better now, but we do need a big number of hits to follow as even an A-list movie like 'Luck' bombed.

"Every movie has a luck of its own. For example, a small-budget film like 'A Wednesday' had a moderate release last year but proved to be a dark horse. At the end of the day it's the content that will win."

Film critic Omar Qureshi had something similar to say.

"The industry is healing. Everyone was deprived of movies. There was a desperation to watch films and the audiences couldn't handle it. So they took multiplexes by storm once good movies hit the screens and the result is worth watching," said Qureshi.

"But that doesn't mean mediocre movies will win the race too... it'll only take big-budget and big-banner movies with a good story to make up for the losses and bring in footfalls," he added.

The stand-off between producers-distributors and multiplex owners started in February over revenue-sharing. While the producers demanded a flat 50 percent share of all film revenues irrespective of the stars, budget and box-office collection, the exhibitors stressed on sharing profits based on the movie's earnings.

As a result the producers declared a strike from April 4 onwards, which saw no big Bollywood releases in multiplexes across the country.

Now all eyes are set on an array of big releases after the lull.

The line-up includes Shahid Kapur-Rani Mukerji starrer "Dil Bole Hadippa", three movies of Salman Khan - "Wanted", "Main Aur Mrs Khanna" and "London Dreams" - two Ranbir Kapoor-starrers "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani" and "Rocket Singh - Salesman of The Year", and Aamir Khan's "3 Idiots".

Apart from these, there are also Hrithik Roshan's much-talked-about action thriller "Kites", Priyanka Chopra's "What's Your Raashee?", two movies starring Amitabh Bachchan - "Aladdin" and "Pa" - Akshay Kumar's "De Dana Dan", Govinda's "Hook Ya Crook" and Neil Nitin Mukesh's "Jail".

‘Kaminey’ is Priyanka’s third hit in a row

‘Thank you guys (audiences) for your positivity,’ she Tweets

Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra is on cloud nine after scoring a hat-trick with her latest release "Kaminey".

"Thank you guys (audiences) for your positivity on 'Kaminey'! And yes... it is a hat-trick… Yay," elated Priyanka posted on her Twitter page.

The 27-year-old has delivered three hits in a row - first she wowed the audience with her power-packed performance as an ambitious model in Madhur Bhandarkar's "Fashion", then as a chic girl in Tarun Mansukhani's "Dostana" and now as a typical Maharashtrian girl in "Kaminey", a dark thriller by Vishal Bharadwaj.

In her next "What's Your Rashee", she will be seen essaying 12 different roles - arguably no other actor has attempted. Priyanka is also busy shooting for Yash Raj Films' "Pyaar Impossible", in which she stars opposite Uday Chopra.

'Kaminey' turns out to be a goldmine

Film’s earnings have surpassed all expectations

Director Vishal Bharadwaj's dark thriller "Kaminey" has turned out to be a goldmine, earning about Rs.330 million in its first weekend at the box office.

Produced by UTV Motion Pictures, the fast-paced crime drama, released on Aug 14, has made good business despite the fact that it wasn't released in major cities of Maharashtra the same day due to swine flu scare.

"Kaminey" was released worldwide with 1,200 prints and it hit theatres in Maharashtra on Aug 17.

"The film has surpassed all expectations with the kind of business it did in the first weekend of its release and critical acclaim that it has generated in India and around the world," said Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO, UTV Motion Pictures.

"The success of 'Kaminey' is testament to what can be achieved when you bring together a visionary director, talented cast and crew, compelling script, great production values, aggressive marketing and sound distribution strategy," added Kapur.

According to a press release from UTV, the movie has already become Bharadwaj's and leading casts' biggest hit ever. It has also been the second biggest opening of the year in India as well as the US and UAE. The film got biggest opening in Pakistan as well as Australia.

B.O. update: 'Kaminey' opens with a bang, 'Life Partner' picks up

As expected, KAMINEY opened to an excellent response, garnering one of the best openings in recent times. Vishal Bhardwaj + Shahid Kapoor + 'Dhan Te Nan' have done the trick. The film is being liked immensely by the youth. The first day collections, excluding Mumbai and Pune, should be huge. Today [15th August] being Independence Day holiday, the business is expected to be superb again.

On the other hand, LIFE PARTNER had a 25% to 30% start across various screens. The film was affected due to the KAMINEY wave, but the business picked up from noon onwards. The 3 p.m. shows showed a jump at several screens and the evening and night shows were even better. The film is being liked by family audiences.

Everyone seeks Aamir

Ever since he made Taare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan is the one person whose approval matters a lot to every director in B-Town.

Soham Shah had a screening of Luck for Aamir, and two nights ago, Vishal Bhardwaj showed him Kaminey. What Aamir thought of their films is, of course, not public knowledge because the actor is very discreet when it comes to discussing other filmmakers’ work. What one hears though is that Vishal and Aamir were locked in conversation for an hour after the screening. Guess that could only mean the actor liked what he saw. Why else would he be wasting his precious time?

Priyanka: Ghajini was more violent than Kaminey

Non-starry star Priyanka has a small yet important role in Kaminey and she throws herself into each scene, making you believe she is every inch the fiery Maharashtrian girl she portrays. The actress is lapping up accolades for her powerful ac. She talks about the film, the delay and ‘What’s Your Raashee?’

“I just hope Kaminey does well because we all have worked exceptionally hard on it. We have been fighting on various fronts for the film. First, the strike was there and later we got an adult certificate due to which we have lost the college-going and school audience. We made the film keeping in mind a ‘U/A’ certificate. Everyone saw Ghajini and wasn’t it more violent than Kaminey?” she muses, adding, “Now, we have to deal with Swine Flu in Pune and Mumbai. Issko abhi hi kyun aana tha! However, public health is of utmost importance and we have three weeks to recover our money as the next big release is Wanted on September 18.”

Speaking about her Marathi mulgi avatar in the film, she said, “I am glad it turned out right and people have accepted me in that role. Shahid told me I was behaving like a bai only. I even loved wearing that Kashti saree. I wouldn’t mind working with Shahid if we are offered more films.”

Priyanka is one of the busiest actresses in town. She is shooting and promoting different films together. “I was shooting for Pyaar Impossible and now I am promoting Kaminey. We will continue to do over the weekend to keep the buzz alive till the multiplexes open and request people not to resort to piracy,” says the dusky beauty.

Her next release is the highly-anticipated ‘What’s Your Raashee?’ on September 25. “No one in the history of world cinema has played 12 characters in one film. It was emotionally and physically taxing which is why I fell sick. I hope people appreciate that film too,” she signs off on a high note.

Kaminey ka Dil Bole Hadippa

Shahid is on a roll these days, lapping up all critical acclaim for the most difficult and the finest performance of his career in Kaminey. He tells that he will start shooting for his father's film and has many releases lined up for this year.

The much-loved promos of Kaminey are still on air, there is a good buzz about Dil Bole Hadippa and he has unveiled his new short-haired look for his YRF film with Anushka Sharma. Isn’t that too much of Shahid all of a sudden? “We had planned it that way, to surprise people with absolutely different looks,” replies the actor. He will be busy promoting Kaminey over the weekend as the buzz has to be sustained due to the delay caused by Swine Flu.

Kaminey was a big risk for him. “I just hope people don’t find it boring and the movie does well because that will give me the confidence to try out new things and take risks,” he says.

Kaminey is his first release in a year, following Kismat Konnection but he has at least three releases this year. “Dil Bole Hadippa will release next month, Ken Ghosh’s dance film is also ready and they are looking for a suitable date for Paathshala because it is a children’s film. My special appearance in the film lasts about 30 minutes and I am not the lead of the film. So that could release around vacation time this year.”

Regarding his pairing with Genelia and the older Rani Mukerji, he says, “I have a very positive feeling about Genelia and me. We make a good pair on screen. I always knew Rani Mukerji was older than me but we make a good pair and it was required for the role. Contrary to popular belief, I don’t interfere with the casting of the heroine unless the director is my friend and asks for my opinion.”

Shahid will also go to receive his Rajiv Gandhi award which is a matter of honour because only senior actors receive it. At only 28, Shahid is the youngest recipient for his subtle yet sparkling performance in Jab We Met. “I am honoured. What more can I say? I didn’t expect it at all so early on in my career. I had to shoot in Bangkok around August 18 but that has been re-scheduled and I will be going to Delhi to receive my award.”

Lastly, Shahid is finally going to start shooting for his father Pankaj Kapur’s film. “Once I wrap up Parmeet’s film with Anushka, I start shooting for Dad’s film which will release next year," signs off the heartthrob.

Why do we underestimate our audiences, asks Priyanka Chopra

Since moviegoers in India today are exposed to world cinema in a big way, Priyanka Chopra is surprised that quite a few Bollywood filmmakers still follow the escapist route. But she says her new film "Kaminey" doesn't fall in that category and audiences should come with their thinking caps on.

"Isn't it surprising that whenever there is a Hollywood film playing, we go all ga ga over it, especially when it follows an unconventional narrative? We ask each other when they can do it, why can't we? We are so much in awe of their cinema," Priyanka said.

"However, when it comes to our own movies, we try to play safe stating that we are doing this for our audiences. Come on guys, it's the same audience we are catering to, so why not give them something really new and different to relish?

"Frankly speaking, I don't like it at all when we keep making such statements as so and so film doesn't require audiences to wear a thinking cap," she said.

The actress asks a series of questions regarding the intelligence of the audiences.

"My question is -- why should we underestimate the intelligence of Indian audiences? Why do we believe that they want everything on a platter? Why don't we make a cinema-going experience so exciting and engrossing for them that they actually go on to exclaim 'wow'?" the actress said.

Releasing Friday, "Kaminey" is a dark thriller that revolves around gangsters, rebel soldiers, rogue politicians and crooked cops. Directed by Vishal Bharadwaj, it features Shahid Kapoor in a double role.

Priyanka observes that while good films are working, bad films, despite top star casts and huge budgets, are being rejected by the audience.

"It's as simple as that -- garbage in, garbage out," she said. "Thankfully India is changing for the better and there are some brilliant films being made today."

Ask her to give a few examples and she responds in a jiffy, "Movies like 'Dev D', 'Jodhaa Akbar', 'Rock On' and 'A Wednesday' have worked because they had an original script and were treated so differently and innovatively. These were all intelligent films and not made for kindergarten kids. No wonder audiences grabbed them all in a big way."

She doesn't forget to mention her own movies from 2008 that saw her marching back into the reckoning.

"Both 'Dostana' and 'Fashion' were made within commercial parameters but still had a very good story to tell. These were not frivolous at all. That's the reason they succeeded."

"In fact, the last film that really impressed me this year was 'New York'. Kudos to Yash Raj Films for backing such a subject and making such a good topical entertainer. It was a sensitive story to be told and Kabir Khan treated it with utmost maturity. Hats off.

"These are the kind of films that make you believe that Bollywood is indeed seeing a new direction for better", she said.

Kaminey v/s Life Partner

While everyone is upset that the release of Kaminey has been postponed in Mumbai due to Swine Flu, no one is bothered about Life Partner.

Keeping our views aside, with the help of celebrity astro-numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi, we unravel the fate of the two movies.

The title Life Partner adds up to Number 44 (4 + 4 = 8) which is the Number of Saturn (Shani) known to give lots of hardships and struggle in life. The year 2009 which adds up to Number 2 is conversely opposite of that and that is why Numbers 2 and 8 generally do not gel well. In that context, I feel Life Partner may not have a ‘long life’ at the box office,” predicts Bhavikk.

“Similarly, Fardeen Khan is a Number 8 (March 8) while Tusshar Kapoor is a Number 2 (November 20). So in all probability, this ‘jodi’ has very less chances of clicking. Also the film’s anchor Govinda is currently running in his 46th year (4 + 6 = 10 = 1 + 0 = 1) year which is one of his weakest numbers and it seems like Govinda’s comic timing may also not be able to salvage the film beyond a point,” says Bhavikk.

“Numerologically speaking, things do not seem to be much in favour of this Life Partner,” concludes Bhavikk.

Dhan Te Nan, there is a bright side to this story to courtesy the good stars of Kaminey.

“The title Kaminey adds up to Number 19 which represents the Sun – the most powerful star of our solar system. Currently, the Sun is in the zodiac sign of Leo which is also ruled by the Sun. In that case, Kaminey has all the chances of hitting the bull’s eye,” predicts Bhavikk.

“Shahid Kapoor was born on February 25, 1981 and his destiny number also adds up to Number 1. He is in his 29th year (2 + 9 = 1 + 1 = 2) which is one of his strongest numbers. The year 2009 also adds up to Number 2. This is the best phase of his life and Shahid is likely to deliver an award winning performance in this film,” assures Bhavikk with a lot of confidence.

He continues, “Director Vishal Bhardwaj is also a Leo (August 6) ruled by Number 1. The official release of the film may be 14th August but at most places it will be released on 13th August in the form of paid previews. Number 4 and Number 1 go hand in hand. This will further improve the film’s prospects at the box office, Swine Flu notwithstanding.”

Kaminey has all the trappings to become the Number 1 film of the year!” signs off Sangghvi on a high note.

Update: Kaminey won't release in Mumbai

Kaminey fans have reason to frown as the multiplexes in Mumbai will be shut for three days because of swine flu. Even the Delhi premiere has been cancelled.

A source told, “Kaminey is not releasing this week and will incur a loss of 15 crores almost if it gets postponed. It is only in Mumbai that it is not releasing. Cinema halls will be closed because of the swine flu scare. The producers are very worried because they wanted to cash in on the long weekend as Friday is Gokulashtmi and Saturday is Independence Day. Also, multiplexes were running paid previews on Thursday night. Multiplexes are expected to open on Sunday or Monday.”

The spokesperson of Kaminey said, “Everything is on hold right now because of the multiplexes being shut down. We are not even sure of the press show.”

According to a reliable source from the film, the Delhi premiere has been cancelled and a screening with the cast has been arranged in its place.

When we called up Cinemax, an executive said, “We have no update about tomorrow. We are booking tickets for today and tomorrow’s shows. If the shows get cancelled then the patrons will get their money back.”

Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO of UTV confirms Kaminey will not release in Mumbai on Friday. "There is immense buzz and anticipation around the release of Kaminey which is clearly one of the most awaited films of the year. There is already a heavy rush for Paid Previews of the film nationwide and in US/ UK & Dubai. We are going ahead with the release of the film this Friday across the country and worldwide in 1200 screens. This will not include the markets of Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai following the directive given by the government. We look forward to release the film in these regions as soon as the cinemas are given permission to re-open. Being a corporate we are fully insured for the 2 day delay we are facing in these markets."

StarBoxOffice is awfully disappointed that Kaminey may not release in Mumbai this week and empathizes with everyone who will have to deal with boredom this weekend.

Kaminey - Movie Review

Dhan Te Nan. Vishal Bhardwaj pays homage to cinema of yore and that's reason enough to go out and grab tickets for one of the most keenly anticipated films of our times.

A few monsoons ago, Farah Khan paid homage to the cinema of 1970s with OM SHANTI OM. Now Bhardwaj picks up characters that we have witnessed on the Hindi screen before, but executes it like Tarantino and Guy Ritchie do. He creates a film that's so different from movies we've witnessed thus far.

Let's say, KAMINEY is bold, stark, funny and unpredictable and that's what works in its favour. There're two more reasons: Shahid Kapoor and of course, 'Dhan Te Nan'. Okay, we've seen Shahid pitching in a sincere act in his earlier films, but KAMINEY should catapult him to superstardom. His double role in KAMINEY is exemplary.

There's another star in KAMINEY and that's 'Dhan Te Nan'. Your heart starts beating faster every time you hear this in the background or also when Shahid breaks into the song. The track is as big a craze as 'Jumma Chumma' [HUM], 'Ek Do Teen' [TEZAAB] and 'Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai' [KHAL-NAYAK] and will contribute enormously in attracting viewers in hordes.

Having said that, I wish to add that KAMINEY is not the usual masala film. Sure, it's a well-made film, but there's no spoon feeding here. One has to be attentive, very attentive to grasp the goings-on and also the twists in the tale. It's not one of those lock-your-brains-at-home types, for sure. And that might not be too appealing a thought for those who swear by candyfloss or meaningless ha-ha-thons.

To cut it short, KAMINEY is a film with an attitude. Like it or leave it, but you'd never be able to ignore it. Word from the wise: Go for this hatke experience!

KAMINEY is about a pair of twin brothers, Charlie and Guddu [Shahid Kapoor]. Charlie lisps, while Guddu stammers. They are as different as chalk and cheese. And they can't stand the sight of each other. Till one fateful rainy night, their lives cross.

Charlie gets mixed up in a deathly get-rich-quick scheme, while Guddu realizes that the love of his life, Sweety [Priyanka Chopra], has unwittingly put a price on his head. The brothers are sucked into a world of drugs, guns and money. Their lives collide head on with the lives of gangsters, rebel soldiers, rogue politicians and crooked cops.

The brothers have to run to protect themselves, their dreams, their love. And most importantly, realize that all they have is each other.

It takes time to get used to the world Vishal Bhardwaj wants us to enter. The characters, the relationships, the lingo, the tone and the setting… frankly, you don't take to KAMINEY instantly. But twenty minutes into the film and things start falling in place. From thereon, you're drawn into a different world completely.

The interval point raises the bar and also the expectations. The story takes a dramatic turn at this juncture, but minutes before that, 'Dhan Te Nan' makes the proceedings exhilarating and stimulating.

Right from the sequence after the interval to the finale, Vishal Bhardwaj peels off layer after layer, which erupts like a volcano towards the end. The end is long drawn and with so many characters in the film, it only takes time to give a culmination to each of those characters. And that gets tedious. The violent end might not find universal acceptance. Vishal Bhardwaj proves that he's a master storyteller. KAMINEY is a damn difficult film to conceptualize and execute and Vishal does it with gusto. Besides the soundtrack ['Dhan Te Nan'], the effectual background score only enhances the impact. The dialogues, also penned by Vishal, are super. At places, clapworthy. Tassaduq Hussain's cinematography is top notch.

Shahid takes a really big leap with KAMINEY. Note how he handles the two characters, Guddu and Charlie, brilliantly. This film is a step to superstardom and also which will open new doors and vistas for him as an actor. Priyanka is first-rate. She's so much in sync with her character. Also, she gets the Maharashtrian accent perfect. Amole Gupte is outstanding. An incredible actor! Tenzing Nima and Chandan Roy Sanyal leave a solid impression. Shiv Subrahmanyam and Hrishikesh Joshi are perfect.

On the whole, KAMINEY lives up to the hype associated with it. The film has three stars -- Vishal Bhardwaj [a name that's immensely respected by moviegoers], Shahid Kapoor and 'Dhan Te Nan' -- and this combo as also the crooked characters and a genuinely hatke subject should guarantee ample footfalls in cineplexes even after its initial weekend. The weekend business should be huge due to the holidays all through the weekend: Friday [Janmashtami], Saturday [Independence Day] and Sunday. Of course, the business is bound to be affected in parts of Mumbai territory due to Swine Flu, but the film should take off in a big way when theatres re-open.

Only young can lead India: Shahid & Priyanka

You don’t have to wait for Friday to see Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor in their first film together — UTV’s eagerly-awaited Kaminey, we present Bollywood’s new hot and happening jodi to you today.

Not as stars, but as guest editors of our International Youth Day issue... because, well, they are role models to the young. She’s 27, he’s 28, Miss World and Prince Charming, and if they are not the youth, then who is!

They arrived together, but separately, two similar cars making the long journey from the same building in Versova, so that we don’t mistake them for a couple. She got out first, long legs flashing in a tight, short blue dress, he followed, in torn jeans and a check shirt; making a picture of sex appeal and charm, oomph and rippling muscles. Over coffee and sandwiches at the edit meeting — he carefully squeezing the cheese out of the brown bread, she eating without fuss — the agenda was taken up by them.

What were the problems facing the youth in India today? What advice did they have to give teenagers and young adults dealing with depression, alcoholism and drug abuse, date-rape, premature sex and unwanted pregnancies, stress at work, hatred for the neighbour, a lack of faith in leaders — life’s new pressures brought on early by the 21st century to the immature and inexperienced? Did they think youth in politics meant a better deal for the people and for India itself, on the global platform?

Priyanka and Shahid proved to be worthy role models to the youth. They had advice to give, experiences to share, hope to offer... all of which you will come across in this issue dedicated to International Youth Day. “India is a great place to be in for a youngster,” said Shahid, “I’m young, I’m new in my field, I’m finding my feet... and I can tell you, seize the opportunity... you can do what you want with your life.” “Yes,” agreed Priyanka, “it’s okay not to be perfect, it’s fine to have problems, but don’t give up... identify your strength, everybody is good at something, build on that.”

PS: They laughed, teased, fought, cracked jokes on each other, shared funny and intimate experiences, there was much friendly cut and thrust between them — she often didn’t let him get a word in edgewise, she playfully slapped him when he got bawdy; he solemnly revealed all her secrets and fears, he imitated her delightfully, and there was a young, happy and healthy buzz between the two. Does that make them a couple? Frankly, we couldn’t be bothered. Not even with him playing footsie with her beneath the table. Or was that her kicking him when he went too far?
