John to appeal against jail term

John Abraham, who has been sentenced to 15 days in jail in a rash and negligent driving case registered in 2006, Friday said he would appeal against the verdict.

"To begin with, I'm a law abiding citizen and I will be appealing this verdict and will go to every length to have this verdict appealed. I'm advised that I have a good chance of succeeding this appeal," John, who is currently out on bail, said.

"I am also clarifying with this statement only because I am a public figure and in all modesty I do have a large youth interaction, who look to me for guidance and leadership and inspiration and I don't want them to feel or take away that when wronged, we do not fight for what is right," John said, reading from his statement.

"I also want to categorically state that I have the highest regard for the judicial system of our great country and this is more of a personal clarification I felt compelled to make due to the public life that I also lead than commenting in any way to the judicial view," he added.

John was sentenced to 15 days jail by a city court on October 14. He was charged under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code. He immediately applied for bail and deposited a fine of Rs.1,500.

The accident took place April 8, 2006 when the actor banged his 1100 CC Yamaha Hayabusa motorbike into a cycle, injuring two people.

"I can beat John..."

Bipasha Basu is itching to do action roles. While her latest film 'Aakrosh' is about honour killings where she plays her most fragile character yet, the actress says in real life she is fit enough to beat her boyfriend John Abraham's energy levels.

"I want to do action. I think I am too fit at this point in time and that is a zone that I have not tapped fully and in India we don't have too many films where the woman gets to do action. Hopefully, somewhere I see that I will be able to realise something that I want very soon. So I'm just crossing my fingers," Bipasha said.

The 31-year-old has one of the most well-toned bodies among Bollywood actresses.

"I feel girls should be (physically) strong, it's very important. I have a boyfriend who is very strong; so I should match at least 30 percent of his strength.

"Now my energy level is much more than him, I can beat his energy levels in 20 minutes," revealed Bipasha, who also released a fitness DVD 'Bipasha Basu: Love Yourself' earlier this year.

Tagged as a sexy glamour girl, Bipasha surprised everyone when she decided to do the issue-based film 'Lamhaa' and flaunt a no make-up look. She is repeating the same in her new release 'Aakrosh'. Directed by Priyadarshan, it is about honour killings and also stars Ajay Devgn and Akshaye Khanna.

"In the film, I play Geeta who loves Ajay Devgn but is not allowed to marry him because he is from a lower caste. She is married off to Paresh Rawal. In the film, I lead a very sad life. This is by far the saddest role that I've ever done. I actually pity the life of women who go through this.

"My character in the film goes through marital abuse, she gets continuously beaten up and abused by her husband. She has no happiness left. She is not married to the man she loves. Basically she is more or less a dead person.

"That's why Geeta has no makeup, her saris are very normal. She doesn't even do her hair properly. She is by far the most vulnerable, weak, fragile role that I have ever played," she added.

Bipasha maintains she is not a method actor and leaves her character on the sets.

"I'm not a method actor, I don't even take it after the cut. I'm an instinctive actor because I learnt on the job. I never wanted to be an actor when I did my first film. so for me it is all instinctive.

"If you make me rehearse too much, I'll be like a robot, I'll be mechanical. So, I don't belong to the method school of acting and I don't understand it because to me it all sounds mad."

John Abraham's a liar!

We're not saying that. Machines being used to promote his upcoming film Jhootha Hi Sahi have arrived at that conclusion

Around a hundred lie detectors have certified John Abraham as a liar!

The marketing team of Abbas Tyrewala's Jhootha Hi Sahi has come up with a promotional activity that involves a lie detection machine. A person has to put his finger on the machine and answer questions. The machine will indicate if the user is lying or telling the truth.

Says a source from the team, "These brand-new lie detectors will be attached to the film's standees in cinema halls. Anyone can get a lie detection test done. To show how the machines work, we asked John to get used to it, since he would be encouraging others to use it."

Says producer Madhu Manthena, "John kept trying out the lie detector and it kept branding him a liar. He tried another, thinking something was wrong with the machine. But a few other folks tried them out and received an opposite result (that they were telling the 'truth').

Hundred-odd standees later, we've decided that he's a confirmed liar. He wanted us to change and tweak the standee but I don't think that's going to happen."

Our source adds, "John was quite irritated. He couldn't believe that every machine was producing the same result."

Bipasha pleasantly surprised by John's nerdy look

Bipasha Basu says she is pleasantly surprised by her beau, actor John Abraham's unique and bespectacled look in Abbas Tyrewala's Jhootha Hi Sahi.

"People know him as a stud and in this film, he looks like an adorable simpleton! It's also so different from the real John who I know. Such is the magic of cinema," Bipasha posted on her Twitter page.

John plays Siddharth - a messy boy, who is a compulsive liar. He wears spectacles and sports a paunch - quite unlike the handsome and fit John.

"Acting is so amazing, you can play parts which are so different from the real you. The Jhootha Hi Sahi promo of John took me by surprise pleasantly," added Bipasha.

The film also features Tyrewala's wife Pakhi, who has even written the script. Jhootha Hi Sahi is set for an October release.

John gets steamy

Actor shoots a make-out scene with Sonal Sehgal

John Abraham has performed an intimate love-making scene with Sonal Sehgal in Nagesh Kukunoor's Aashayein.

The scene is an important part of the film and gives John's character a new twist. Even though it's graphic in nature, the director has made sure he's shot it aesthetically.

A source says, "John and Sonal's love-making scenes come at a crucial point in the film and take the story in a new direction. Before shooting it, Nagesh explained the motive behind the passionate scene to both the actors."

Aashayein is about Rahul Singh (John), a compulsive gambler in love with Nafisa (Sonal).

Suddenly one day, he learns that he is suffering from a disorder that gives him only 90 days to live. The prognosis changes the way he views life.

Cover my bum, says John Abraham

Wants to get his derriere insured... for Rs 10 crore

John Abraham has come up with a kick-a** idea. The star wants to insure his butt! The actor, who displayed his derriere in his now-famous yellow chaddis in Dostana, is looking to secure his assets for Rs 10 crore.

Like Hollywood star Jennifer Lopez, Bipasha Basu's beau has decided to buy a policy that covers any possible risk to his body part. He would be the first Indian celebrity to do so.

Indian companies are not used to body part insurance as it has yet to catch on as a trend here, like it has in the West. Says a source, "But some insurance companies are willing to make an exception for John."

The star recently suffered a minor case of muscle fatigue and had stopped gymming for a while. But now he is back to his exercise routine.

Adds the source, "Rs 10 crore is a heavy amount of insurance and the premium that he would have to pay for it would be mindboggling. And the star is up for it."

Confirms John, "I agree that there is an initiative from my side but this is a work-in-progress. I am meeting various people for this. At this point, I would not like to say more."

South sensation Rajnikant has copyrighted his voice. No one can mimic him without his consent.

HOLLYWOOD INSURES...
>> Insuring body parts started with Ben Turpin, the silent-movie star who bought a $20,000 policy in the 1920s to insure his signature crossed eyes.
>> Leg insurance began with Betty Grable, whose million-dollar legs were insured for that amount.
>> Soccer star David Beckham has his legs and feet insured.
>> Choreographer Michael Flatley (Lord of the Dance) had his feet insured for $39 million.
>> German supermodel Heidi Klum insured her legs for $2.2 million. One of her limbs is insured for $1.2 million while the other for only $1 million. They have different values as there is a scar on one knee.
>> Tina Turner has her legs insured for a sum that is quite large.
>> Fred Astaire had insured his legs for $75,000 per leg, with an additional $20,000 of insurance on his wrists and arms.
>> Supermodel Claudia Schiffer had her face insured for $5 million.
>> Actress America Ferrara's smile was insured for $10 million.
>> Bruce Springsteen bought a $6 million policy to insure his voice
>> Singer Dolly Parton purchased a $600,000 policy to insure her 42-inch chest.
>> Bette Davis had a $28,000 policy insuring her against weight gain.
>> Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards had his hands insured.
>> Marilyn Monroe had to be insured against drug use.
>> Food critic and gourmet Egon Ronay bought a $400,000 insurance policy on his taste buds.

Katrina to join John Abraham on Kaakha Kaakha

Dostana 2 being postponed to late- 2011 has given John Abraham free time to start shooting the Hindi remake of Kaakha Kaakha with director Nishikant Kamat.

The actor starts shooting for Kaakha Kaakha this week. His Dostana 2 leading lady Katrina Kaif finds herself with free time on her hands and might end up pairing with John in this film.

Producer Vipul Shah commends Tarun Mansukhani for his decision to postpone Dostana 2. "It's commendable that Tarun decided to wait until he was happy with his script. We were to start our remake of Kaakha Kaakha in April but we pushed it ahead as we were not happy with our script. We've now revamped Kaakha Kaakha."

Vipul says Johnny Boy's leading lady is yet to finalised. Here's where John's project stands to benefit further from the postponement of Dostana 2. Katrina Kaif, a dear friend to both John and Vipul Shah, is being asked to take over the leading lady's place in the project. And apparently KK is on. When contacted, Kat says the sudden postponement of Dostana 2 has left her dates diary disengaged. "Something else is being worked out," she offers evasively.

So if not Dostana 2, Kat will do the Kaakha Kaakha remake with John.

John is Bipasha's 'Jewellery supplier'

All that glitters on Bipasha Basu actually comes from her beau John Abraham. The sultry actress confesses that all the jewellery she has is gifted by her boyfriend.

"All the jewellery comes to me from John. He is my diamond supplier," Bipasha told reporters after the launch of a new ad campaign of Gili, the jewellery brand of Gitanjali, at Taj Lands End in Mumbai.

Asked about the kind of engagement ring she is looking forward to, she said: "Well the engagement ring comes from the other side. You have to ask this to the other side. I hope it's nice and beautiful; not too big, not too small, just the right size for my finger."

Bipasha maintains that her mother saves a lot of jewellery for her, but she is happy with her own stuff.

"My mother saves a lot of gold and diamond jewellery for me. I have not really looked into it. Till now, I am very happy with my jewellery," said Bipasha.

Bipasha's recent release 'Lamhaa' has garnered mixed reviews but she is happy the way media and public have raved her performance.

John to miss out on FIFA finals

When urgent work on Saat Khoon Maaf cropped up, the diehard football fan had to give up on his dream holiday plan

John Abraham may have a better body, but the actor doesn’t have Shah Rukh Khan’s luck. While SRK is all set to fly to South Africa (after holidaying in London that is) for attending the FIFA finals, John, who had made similar plans, had to cancel them at the last minute. Reason? His own film Saat Khoon Maaf.

John has been following all the World Cup matches quite diligently, on his new home theatre system. Call it cruel irony but in the interim, the actor also worked for an advertisement, which required him to play a football fan, spinning the ball like a pro.

“Bet no one in the industry can spin the wall the way I can. Can’t wait to be at the finals. I’ve my tickets booked for the finals,” said John with childlike pride, a few weeks ago.

It all came to a grinding halt when Vishal Bharadwaj, director of Saat Khoon Maaf, decided to do some additional shooting in Mumbai for his film with Priyanka Chopra and John Abraham.

Says a source, “John was heartbroken. He had gone to great lengths to ensure he could be in South Africa in time for the finals. When one of the readings of the Dostana 2 script coincided with the World Cup Finals John had painstakingly worked on rearrange his schedules.

If he had his way he would have attended all the matches. But various things including his pal Dhoni’s wedding kept him from his dream spot.”

After Dhoni’s wedding John was all set to leave when Vishal gave him the news. Trying hard to conceal his disappointment John said, “Yes work beckons. I won’t be able to go for the finals. It’s a blow. I was so looking forward to it. But what to do? Work comes first. Next time for sure.”

Dhoni got engaged to school friend Sakshi at Vishranti Resort on Saturday (July 3). The couple was said to be dating for the past two years. The two are tying the knot this evening (July 4) and reports say their wedding reception will be held July 7 in Mumbai.

The actor came with Dhoni's teammate Piyush Chawla.

John's girlfriend and actress Bipasha Basu took to microblogging site Twitter to congratulate the couple.

"Wishing Mahi and Sakshi a very happy life together forever. Sad that I can't be there," she tweeted.

Shilpa Shetty also congratulated the couple, posting: "Congratulations in order to Mahi and Sakshi, wishing them all the happiness and marital bliss forever."

While Suresh Raina, RP Singh, Aashish Nehra Harbhajan Singh are said to be attending the wedding, Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag are likely to give the ceremony a miss.

John wants to do solo films

And he reveals why he took time off after the success of 'New York'

He's given hits like 'Garam Masala', 'Dhoom' and 'Dostana', but they've all been multi-starrers. Now John Abraham says he is in pursuit of solo hero movies after taking a sabbatical to groom himself and restructure his life to step into the best phase of his career.

John's last film 'New York' (2009) received much critical acclaim, but that too was a multi-starrer.

"I am trying to do solo films, which could be commercially successful. I'm aiming to do that with certain directors who I believe will kind of create a platform for me and the kind of scripts that will work also," John said.

The 36-year-old, who made an impressive start with romantic thriller 'Jism' in 2003, has experimented with comedy, action and family drama. He says he is open to doing different genres but adds that he would prefer working on real stories.

"I look at films that entertain rather than looking at genres. If you speak of genres, then technically I should only do action films, but that doesn't mean I will do only action. The idea is to do real stories," said the actor.

John, who disappeared after 'New York', will be seen on the big screen in Abbas Tyrewala's romantic comedy '1-800-Love'.

"It's a romantic comedy. It's like 'Notting Hill'...And I think Abbas has done a great job."

Talking about his sabbatical, John said: "I was designing my house and reading books. I was restructuring my professional life and trying to understand how I could give better films. I took time off so that I could do quality work."

"I read books to understand the type of films I want to do. I don't want to copy other films. I want to do originals. I want to do human stories. I want to understand how to position myself in front of the audience and decided these are the films audience will enjoy.

"So I was restructuring by trying to select the right scripts, right directors, right producers. You start charting out your life, like a game of chess. Now it's planned and the best part of my professional life starts now," he added.

The actor has an impressive line up of releases - 'Hook Ya Crook', 'Aashayein', 'Alibaba Aur 41 Chor' (voiceover), 'Saat Khoon Maaf' and 'Dostana 2'.

John has often been complimented for his good looks and sculpted body and the actor is the brand ambassador of Garnier Men grooming products. He says men care more about their looks nowadays.

"I think men have become more conscious because they have realised that women have become more independent. Today, women have a choice. Earlier, women didn't have a choice. She can tell a man to get out. So men have learnt to groom themselves, become smarter, better. And part of the deal is to smell good, look good, and feel fresh. So that's why men's products have become much more relevant today," said John.

Mr. Congeniality: John Abraham

John Abraham loves staying fit. And he works very hard to ensure that his body remains in shape and healthy. The actor, who lives in suburban Mumbai, is often spotted at Gold’s Gym in Bandra, working out and building those muscles.

But what has got everyone ooh-ing and aah-ing over the actor is not his six-pack abs, but his uber-friendly demeanour at the gym.

“He comes in and smiles and greets all the trainers at the gym. Even the members who work out there will get a 'Hi' from him,” says an onlooker, “He has no attitude whatsoever, and is so approachable,” a source said.

In fact, onlookers tells us that John often patiently waits his turn for the treadmill or weights and doesn’t expect any special treatment. “If someone is using the weights that he may want, then he will patiently wait till they are done, after which he actually asks them if they are done and if he can take them. Sometimes, he actually shows them if they are going wrong in their exercise or posture… He totally behaves like one of us,” our source continues to gush.

This particular branch of the gym is extremely popular with celebs. Bipasha Basu and Saif Ali Khan used it for a while for their workout dates, when things were a bit off between John Abraham and Bips. Bipasha is still spotted with her personal trainer, but unlike her beau, she keeps to herself. Also seen regularly at the gym are Neha Dhupia, Soha Ali Khan and Salman Khan.

Often, John gets stopped on his way out of the gym for photographs. And the actor is always ready to oblige. “He would have done a full-on strenuous workout and want to get home, but as soon as he steps out, someone will ask him if they can have a picture with him. And in all these years, I have never seen him say no to anyone. He is one of the most popular guys in the gym,” says a member.

What will Bipasha not do with John

Hot actor reveals girlfriend’s pet hate

John Abraham's love for bikes is well-known but his lady love, actress Bipasha Basu, doesn't like riding pillion with him for that very reason.

"Bipasha doesn't like sitting on my bike because I am very passionate and possessive about my bike. When she sits, I keep saying 'I hope you don't leave a scratch on the bike and all that', so that's why she prefers a car to sitting behind me in a bike," John told reporters in New Delhi during an event.

John will be next seen in Hook Ya Crook and 1-1800 Love.
