John Abraham, the 'hardcore animal lover'
John Abraham is known for championing causes close to his heart. Besides being a PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) spokesperson, the actor was awarded the EcoWarrior Award in June last year for creating India’s first elephant village in Maharashtra. Here, wildlife filmmaker-environmentalist Mike Pandey, who runs Earth Matters Foundation, which instituted the award, speaks about John.Some of us know John Abraham as spokesperson for PETA. The actor has now been instrumental in creating India's first elephant village in Maharashtra, along with wildlife filmmaker-environmentalist Mike Pandey, who runs Earth Matters Foundation, which commits itself to saving the wildlife.
The actor won the EcoWarrior Award instituted by Earth Matters for his efforts last year. Mike Pandey says, about John’s contribution, “It has been an honour working with him on the elephant project and he has supported it wholeheartedly. I must mention he is a hardcore animal lover. He keeps his film work going while taking time out to negotiate with the government for this issue. Whenever I need him, he is there to help in any way he can. He has taken the task to save animals so seriously.”
The two urged the government of Chhattisgarh to pledge its support with a donation of Rs 30 lakh as well as Rs 10 lakh from the Maharashtra Government. Mike says, “We are in talks with the Maharashtra Government and Chhattisgarh -- they have shown keen interest in the cause. We have support from both states, though we have not received the money yet.”
John is also producing an environmental film and planning an initiative to rescue street monkeys. Mike says, “It is a wildlife film about tigers titled Tiger. We have started shooting for it. John took the initiative for the Monkey Project, to rehabilitate street monkeys into the wild. It will stop people from using monkeys to perform and earn money on the streets. John finds it very cruel to make animals perform in roadside shows. The Monkey Project will roll soon.”
Mike adds, “John is a very sensitive human being who will do anything to preserve Nature and help animals in need. His dedication to this and other causes has been phenomenal.”
