Coming Soon: A season full of Ash!

Aishwarya Rai may have lost Sexiest Aisan Woman crown to Priyanka Chopra but millions of hearts still skip the beat when Ash dazzles on silverscreen.

Come November and the talented actress would be seen in two strikingly different avtaars in Dhoom 2 and Umrao Jaan. Interestingly, Aishwarya’s look in Umrao Jaan is completely opposite of her suave and slick avtaar in Dhoom 2.

If she’s looking like a million bucks in the exquisitely designed costumes as Umrao, she’s at her sizzling best in the skimpily clad outfits in Yash Raj Film's sequel.

Anna Singh who designed clothes for the actress in Dutta's epic tells, "To dress Ash is the ultimate dream because her beauty supersedes the most stunning creation. Her costumes matched the phases of her life—from being a simple girl to the glam mujrewali Umrao Jaan Ada to her being heartbroken and finally growing old."

Even though she has not had a big hit film in a long time, yet the actress has her own high brand value. Another interesting thing is that both the films have Abhishekh Bachchan. If he’s romancing her in Umrao Jaan, he’d be seen chasing her in Dhoom 2.

The two will be also be seen together in Mani Ratnam’s Guru and Sarkar 2.

Sarkar 2’ will also be the second film to bring Amitabh Bachchan , Abhishek and Aishwarya together on the big screen. The trio previously jammed together for the song “Kajra Re” in the last year’s hit Bunty Aur Babli.

In Ramu’s film, however, their roles will be properly fleshed out. It'll show Abhishek becoming the head of the clan. Amitabh will have relatively lesser footage. Aishwarya will play the woman who loves Abhi and opposes his involvement in the underworld activities.

But will they create the Kajra Re magic again only time will tell....

They're threatening my family

Three days after his nephew was arrested in a molestation case, film star-turned-politician Govinda on Wednesday said he and his family have received numerous threats in the last one-and-a-half years.

"In the last one-and-a-half years, my family has been targeted 11 times... The children in our family are being targeted," he told a news channel over phone from Bangkok.

"Sometimes we are dragged to the police station for bursting crackers. On other occasions, we are put in the lock-up over driving without licence," he added.

Govinda said he and his family have received a variety of threats, including that of a bomb blast. "Someone says my entire family will be killed," he said.

He said the people who were targeting him were associated with politics and the threats were timed to have an impact on the party's fortunes in the forthcoming municipal polls.

"I am asked why I am not to be seen in politics. How can Govinda be active in politics when he is being targeted time and again. Moreover, how can someone who can't protect his family protect the interests of the people," he said.

Janvendra, nephew of Govinda, was arrested on Saturday last by Juhu police along with his three friends for allegedly trying to molest the wife of the personal assistant of a Maharashtra minister. He is now in judicial custody till October 11.

Asked if he was planning to quit politics, he said, "If ever I take a decision, it will be based on justice and truth."

Ayesha Takia's rare love story

Ayesha Takia and Tusshar Kapoor, who are playing lead roles in producer N.R. Pachisia's "Kya Love Story Hai", feel that the film is a unique love story and everybody will connect to it.

Ayesha plays a vibrant girl paired opposite Tushaar.

Talking about her role, she said: "I play Kajal, a young independent girl who knows exactly what she wants. She's studying and works part-time as well. She's a hardworking girl of today's generation with that innate drive and vigour.

"This is not like the ideal love story where a girl and a guy meet, fall in love and the villain plays the spoilsport. Everybody can relate to the film since everyone at some point in one's life has fallen in love."

Tushaar plays a fun-loving guy facing the mind-heart tussle.

"Though the basic plot is simple, what makes this love story different is the way the story unfolds. It also has freshness in terms of dialogues," said Tusshar.

Pachisia echoes the same views.

"Don't you think the title itself is unusual? I think it's a contemporary film in terms of presentation and projection. Besides, the Tushaar-Ayesha paring makes it unique."

The producer is equally confident about debutant director Lovely Singh. "New directors are very hardworking and sincere. They have that burning desire and fire within them to make things work," said Pachisia.

Singh is positive about his directorial debut.

"This is my first film and I'm not apprehensive about it. I'm trying to make a good film and give it my best. The characters are lovable with some great music by Pritam. We have recorded two songs and I must say he has done a great job."

Himesh: You Are My Sonia

She thought she had seen the best of the party's and night life entertainment in Mumbai but ever since she has returned from her US trip for the Himesh Reshammiya concert, Sonia Kapoor realizes what she has missed out on! Returning recently after the 45 days tour, she recalls the fabulous time she had there. It was a show of its kind and turned out very successful with the crowds going crazy and having a blast. It was literally like seeing the stadium turning into a nightclub packed with an audience of almost 20,000. It was party time for all and Sonia especially had a rocking time!

Sonia personally got good reviews and responses. Many fans came up to her to tell her how much they liked her shows on both Zee and Sony. “There were people who even remembered me from my old shows such as ‘Heena’ and ‘Aa Gale Lag Jaa’ for which I must have done at the most 50 episodes, and till date I had only heard about people there watching Indian tele-serials, but this time I was surprised to see that we have a really large audience there who love to watch our shows.”

She was specifically touched by an incident that happened in Chicago when a middle - aged couple came up to Himesh and said he was sort of a miracle man because their mentally retarded teenage son who usually doesn't respond to anything had lately started responding to his songs. “It was so touching to see the happy parents of the boy; it almost got me into tears.”

Karan Johar is going places. After going to the Toronto Film Festival and a stopover in New York, Karan is back in Mumbai to endorse the products of Hewlett & Packard. Reveals Karan, "Yes, it's my first endorsement. They've got four or five leaders from various fields to endorse their products. They got the market leaders, so to say. I was chosen from media and entertainment. I didn’t do it for any monetary purposes. I did it because their campaign seemed to suggest they wanted architects and not tools from various fields."

Karan has never endorsed any product before. "I don’t want to start selling soap. That's great for an actor. Not for me. I had to be careful about which product I chose to endorse. This one goes with my personality. It's a print campaign so far."

Karan jokes he felt like a star shooting the ad campaign. "Mickey Contractor did my make-up and Atul Kasbekar shot me. And then I faced the camera. Which was thrilling enough!"

Says Karan, "This is a specific campaign and not a long-term arrangement. I just had to hold a computer in my hand. I'm a frustrated actor and I always wanted to face the camera. I hope I didn't end up looking like a fool. Yes, it’s a first. There have been many firsts lately. I hosted a talk show and an awards function for the first time. By the way, I also make films."

Farhan had the whole DON structured in his head

Download Don WallpapersOf the entire cast of DON, Arjun Rampal has kept a relatively low profile and we won't be surprised if he's among the surprise packages at the end of it all!

It seems when Farhan Akhtar approached Arjun for the role played by Pran earlier, Arjun's immediate reaction was, "Wonderful, but wasn't Jasjit 44 years old in the original?!" But when Farhan actually gave him a full narration of the film and his character did Arjun understand that he wasn't going to be playing a 44-year old! "I won't say much except that Farhan had the whole story well structured in his head!" he laughs.

He continues, "To limp was difficult initially but the concept of cane with Jasjit at all times was very interesting. More than a prop it became a part of the character and so did the 'kada' and the 'family photograph' he carries with him in the movie. I always thought the character was more emotional than aggressive and the rage side to it was only an outcome of what he was made to go through."

It seems Arjun had to walk the top of the Petronas skybridge in Malaysia for one of the scenes! He confirms, "I did, and it was a lot of fun! Looking down from that height... wow!!"

Incidentally the film has been given an U/A certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification with no cuts.

Reportedly there is no smoking scene in the film. There is only one scene where there is a smoke ring around Shah Rukh Khan's face, but the character does not have a cigarette in his hand.

Bollywood gave Padmini global platform

PadminiIt was Bollywood that gave actress-dancer Padmini, who died Monday, the national and international prominence that she well deserved.

Padmini was Raj Kapoor's first heroine from the south when he was struggling to find a replacement for Nargis.

She was already doing Hindi films, having debuted with "Payal" in 1957, when Raj starred opposite her in "Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai", the 1960 blockbuster.

Her "Oye hoye hoye hoye hoye", that innocent mix of joy and banter, became a national buzzword as the film went on to win awards at home and abroad.

But the sequence of Padmini under a waterfall, popular for its sensuality, was panned by critics for possible vulgarity.

Her southern oomph was a major attraction of the film that had great music by Shankar Jaikishan, who composed some of the most lilting songs of Hindi cinema sung by Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar.

"Aa ab laut chalen," the climax song came to be regarded as a patriotic song, to be played on national days. It became the title of the maiden film that Raj's son Rishi Kapoor produced years later.

Then came "Aashiq" when Raj and Padmini scorched the screen with romance and songs, again a Shankar Jaikishan and Lata-Mukesh combination.

When Raj indulged in nostalgia in "Mera Nam Joker," Padmini was the only heroine he repeated, something unusual for him.

Along with Vyjayanthimala Bali, who had preceded her to national prominence via Bollywood, Padmini gave Hindi film dances a distinct southern classical touch. Critics thought it was "pseudo classical," but it has stayed a part of film choreography till today.

Like Vyjayanthimala, Padmini proved to be at home in any language that few other artistes emerging from regional cinema have been able to accomplish.

Undoubtedly among the most remarkable artistes to come from southern India, Padmini never really left her roots even after her marriage and migration to the US. She divided her time doing films in Mumbai and Chennai, while running a school of Indian dance in New Jersey.

She did that for a good 20 years before returning to Chennai when her husband K.T. Ramachandran died.

At the height of her popularity in Bollywood, she played Draupadi in Babubhai Mistry's "Ramayan".

She was legendary Ashok Kumar's ladylove in "Kalpana", the only film he produced. Playing a tomboy in contrast to the traditional courtesan played by Padmini in that film was her sister Ragini.

Along with Raj and Nargis, Padmini enjoyed immense popularity in the erstwhile Soviet Union. If Raj was called "Tavarish Brodigya," a street was named after Padmini.

The international high for the three came in "Pardesi", a landmark Indo-Soviet co-production. Director Vasili Pronin's film also had Prithviraj Kapoor and Balraj Sahni.

The film, entitled "Khozhdenie Za Tri Morya" in Russian, was about a Russian (played by Oleg Strizhenov) travelling to India in the 15th century to establish a trade route, and meeting his ladylove in the process.

Hollywood, that failed to understand the nuances of "Mother India" when it was entered for the Oscar that year, did not seem to think much of this Indo-Soviet effort. It was dubbed an adventure film, a travelogue and "kiddie-entertainment" by Hal Erickson in film journal All Movie Guide.

“If it being my second visit to the Oscars generates curiosity in people its ultimately good and beneficial for the movie” – Aamir Khan

This is UTV's 1st entry to the Oscars, how do you feel and what are your expectations on Rang De Basanti winning the award?
Ronnie Scewvala: Firstly this has been an outstanding year for the Indian film fraternity. Loads of movies with diverse topics have been made and graciously accepted by the audiences. The box office has also embraced these versatile movies. Being selected for the Oscars is only like climbing the 1st ladder of success. Rang De Basanti is a movie that has touched upon people’s life. Its success with the audiences itself is a big achievement for us; If it wins the award it would be like an icing on the cake.

In India when Rang De Basanti was released it was shown in lots of universities and colleges. Would the same step be taken abroad?
Ronnie Scewvala: We have already held numerous shows abroad in various universities with about 7000 students and more. Students there have instantly bonded with the movie theme because in many ways the issue is universal and they feel the same disillusions. A.R Rehman has performed number of concerts across the east coast of US promoting Rang De Basanti. Not only has this but A.R. Rehman had also co-played the tracks of RDB with western musicians and created fabulous remixes.

This will be your 2nd time at the Oscars. Do you think this is an added advantage for Rang De Basanti. You are now a known figure in the foreign film category so people will be eager to know more about this movie.
Aamir: Our main aim would be promoting this movie as effectively as possible. If it being my second visit to the Oscars generates curiosity in people its ultimately good and beneficial for the movie. I would definitely use all contacts I have and advise the director and producer at all times.

What does your gut instinct tell you, will Rang De Basanti make it?
Aamir: my gut instinct tells me Rang De Basanti will make India's dream come true.

Ayesha Takia refuses to work with her brother

Ayesha Takia is one gutsy girl. She lives up to what she speaks. And now she has done what most top league heroines would not dare to do. Ayesha has just refused to do a movie with her ‘Rakhi’ brother Nagesh Kukunoor with whom she has just done Dor. The reason being, a kiss was involved in the film.

Nagesh offered Ayesha the role in his next film. The script was very good and Ayesha loved it too. But the only problem was that the script demanded Ayesha to kiss. And Ayesha had made it clear to everyone that she will not be doing any kissing scene for any movie. This was long before even Dor happened to her. And till date she maintains what she said earlier.

This is not the first case Ayesha said no to a movie because of a kissing scene involved. She had earlier refused Yashraj Films, Neal N Nikki for the same reason. Way to go girl!!!!!

And what does he have to say about debutant director Lovely Singh? "I am very confident about him. New directors are very hardworking and sincere. They have that burning desire and fire within them to make things work," he adds.

Ayesha plays a vibrant girl and is paired opposite Tushaar. "I play Kajal, a young independent girl who knows exactly what she wants. She's studying and works part-time as well. She's a hardworking girl of today's generation with that innate drive and vigor," reveals Takia.

"This is not like the ideal love story where a girl and guy meet, fall in love and the villain plays a spoilsport. Everybody can relate to the film since everyone at some point in their lives have fallen in love," she signs off.

On the set of Kya Love Story HaiAnd here's the director speak. "This is my first film and I'm not apprehensive about it. I'm trying to make a good film and give it my best. The characters are lovable with some great music by Pritam. We have recorded 2 songs and I must say he has done a great job,"

Tushaar Kapoor plays Arjun, a fun loving guy who is torn between the mind-heart tussle. "Though the basic plot is simple, what makes this love story different is the way the story unfolds. It also has freshness in terms of dialogues etc," he says.

Amitabh is an addiction: Ram Gopal Varma

Download Sarkar WallpapersDirector Ram Gopal Varma, a self-confessed fan of Amitabh Bachchan, calls the superstar" an addiction".

"Amitabh is an addiction. Once you start working with him, you feel the urge to do it again and again," Varma told IANS.

The duo has worked together in films like "Sarkar" and "Darna Zaroori Hai" in the past and Varma is now looking forward to "Nishabd" and "Sholay".

About "Nishabd", Varma said: "It is the story of an old man falling in love with a younger girl. There is nothing abnormal with this phenomenon. It happens everywhere. But due to society and our rationality, we restrict ourselves from such feelings.

"My movie explores a similar kind of situation but with a twist. What happens when an old man falls in love with a younger girl and how his rationality is overpowered by his passion."

The remake of "Sholay" will see Amitabh as Gabbar Singh - a role originally played by Amjad Khan - and Mohit Ahlawat as Jai, earlier enacted by Amitabh.

Download Shiva WallpapersIs Mohit being given too much of an opportunity by the director?

Varma defends: "Every star is a newcomer at one point of time. It's the capability of a director to realise the potential in a new face.

"Moreover, just casting big stars doesn't make a good film. The script has to be good too. Casting big stars only helps the distribution of a film."

Deepa Mehta on Water being chosen as Canada's official Oscar entry!

This has to be a first. A film in the Hindi language about the widows of Varanasi has been chosen as Canada's official entry into the foreign-language category at the Oscars. Deepa Mehta's Water, already considered India's most feted film since Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali seems to have stuck a note of poignancy far beyond its immediate and culture-specific boundaries

Hours after the announcement Deepa Mehta was ecstatic. "I can't believe the irony of it. A film about the widows of India in Hindi, which I had to shoot in Sri Lanka because I wasn't allowed to suit in my home country, is now going to the Oscars as Canada's official entry. I'm specially proud since Water was up against many formidable films. It’s a very big moment for me" she said from New York where she’s finalizing a big epic to star Hollywood's most saleable actress.

"But before that I've to go into my next project Exclusion. John Abraham, who's now become a dear friend, is already on. But I'm waiting for Mr Bachchan to green-light the project." The international distributors Fox-Searchlight for Water geared into action within hours of the Oscar announcement. "They'll be taking care of the entire Oscar publicity and marketing. Fox-Searchlight hired the services of a major international PR agency within four hours of the Oscar announcement. I couldn't have done it on my own, not the way Aamir Khan took Lagaan to LA and promoted it for the Oscar."

Interestingly Deepa Mehta's Water will most probably be competing against Rakeysh Mehra's Rang de Basanti for an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign film. Says Deepa, "I loved Rang De Basanti. I think it's a very important Indian film. It should be India's Oscar entry. I'm now looking forward to the release of Water in India. My Indian distributor Mr Ravi Chopra is looking at a November release."

RDB all set to color the Oscar academy with saffron

Every so often Bollywood produces a rare gem like Rang De Basanti, a UTV Production that breaks the mould by offering something more sophisticated than the standard musical melodrama. Successfully weaving historical facts with contemporary themes, thanks to Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s direction that Rang De Basanti's absorbing plot, which flits smoothly from past to present, has marched successfully to be India's official entry for the Oscars this year.

This would also be Aamir Khan's second film to make it to the Oscars after Lagaan. Earning top points is the strong performances from the ensemble cast that impress foremost, all of whom are totally convincing as disillusioned youngsters learning the importance of personal sacrifice. Accomplished and universally appealing, Rang De Basanti has provided India with another hope to win the Oscar.

Says UTV's Ronnie Screwvala, "I'm delighted that Rang De Basanti has been chosen as India's official entry to the Academy Awards. RDB has made a place for itself in the hearts and minds of millions of people all around the world. Such movies come along only once in a generation and we shall make every effort to ensure it is seen by as wide audience as possible internationally too. To enable this, we are already planning a mainline release in the United States in association with two major studios. Following the rousing reception the film received at the Golden Globes jury screening, we are confident it stands a strong chance with the Academy."

Over the past few months the RDB effect…the effect the film had had on the public at large, from the infamous Jessica Lal verdict to the Narmada anti-dam campaign to the latest protest marches against the proposed quota for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in institutes of higher learning, forms of protest in India have undergone a sea change from the usual hunger-strike, mob-violence routine. What makes these protests stand out is perhaps a sense of 'feeling for the cause' that transcends age and gender barriers and 'motivates' people to lend their support. Quiet candlelight vigils, rousing protest marches, enthusiastic sloganeering, passionate sound bytes and SMS campaigns.

Interestingly, all these forms of rebellion find a strange resonance and are reminiscent of the reel-life depiction of 'youth awakening' in Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra's, Aamir Khan-starrer film Rang De Basanti the simple message being 'clean your own mess'.

Now let’s hope RDB colors the academy with saffron.

Aishwarya surpasses J.P Dutta's expectations

J.P DuttaJ.P Dutta is known for making films that he's passionate about. Be it BORDER, REFUGEE, LOC KARGIL, BATWARA, HATHYAR etc. Though his films are male-oriented, the prolific director has always portrayed women in a dignified manner. He has innate respect for women. He has never used women in a cheap manner merely to woo the audience and his magnum opus UMRAO JAAN also endorses this fact. It's about the young Amiran who was sold into flesh trade at a very tender age of 9 years.

He is more than happy with Aishwarya Rai's performance and cannot stop raving about her. Her role is not that of a sensuous courtesan but he has sensitively depicted the story of a young girl who is a victim of the flesh trade. He was looking for someone who'd bring alive Amiran's character and his search ended with the beautiful Aishwarya Rai. He said that Aishwarya had that enchanting and enigmatic quality and she has surpassed all his expectations.

What makes UMRAO JAAN intriguing is the fact that several generations and View Umrao Jaan Movie Stillsfilmmakers have tried to recreate the magic of UMRAO JAAN, (his being the 4th film). J.P is a stickler for perfection, which reflects in all his films. He used to brief his wife Bindya and designer Anna about the minutest details regarding costumes and colour coordination etc. The colour of the costumes, the fabric etc everything had to be just perfect. The colours used are completely in harmony with the surroundings. The entire look of the film is magnificent, the costumes are elegant and those who've heard the music are completely smitten by it. The music is very melodious and soulful. It infact marks the return of melody in music. Something the audience has not witnessed since a long time.

Priyanka unhappy about sharing poster space with females in Don?

Priyanka Chopra is upset at a news report claiming that she had been confiding to close friends about her unhappiness on sharing the limelight with hotties Ishaa Koppikar and Kareena Kapoor in the forthcoming 'Don'. Both of them have been appreciated in the 'Main Hoon Don' and 'Yeh Mera Dil' tracks respectively.

It seems Priyanka was not pleased about sharing poster space with her female co-stars and with their high presence in the film's television publicity.

In her defence, Priyanka emphatically clarifies, "The rumour is absolutely baseless and silly. I've been out of town for nearly three months on work, shuttling between countries and living out of a suitcase. Do I look insecure? I'm so proud to be a part of 'Don'. It was a great opportunity to work with such a fantastic bunch of professionals - Shah Rukh, Ritesh and Farhan. I hope to work with them again. It's among the highlight films of my career."

When asked about sharing the limelight with Kareena and Ishaa, she shot back, "I've worked with Kareena before. She's wonderful and adds to the star value of the set-up. Even Ishaa is very good in the film. I really wish people would stop creating fire when there's none!"

Vidya Balan on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal

She gave an award winning performance in Parineeta and matched up her acting skills in Lage Raho Munnabhai. Now she will be seen on the small screen on none other than the Rendezvous with Simi Garewal show.

In a special half hour episode, Vidya tells Simi about her modest upbringing, her teenage crush on Satyajit Ray, the countless performance tests she was put through, before she was finalized to play the role of Lolita in Parineeta and the naughty pranks that were played on her, on the sets of Lage Raho Munnabhai. She also talks about her spiritual side, discussing her deep faith in God. Simi reveals on the show that not only is Vidya a talented actress but is also a trained singer. She humbly agrees to Simi’s request and sings “Piyu Bole” melodiously on the show! Tune in to this heartwarming rendezvous with Vidya Balan this Sunday, on Star World.

Chat transcript

Simi:
Overnight you have admirers. Do you feel that Mein to nahin badli but everybody else has changed towards me?
Vidya: Yes, I feel that the perceptions of people have changed, but you really don't change.

Simi: How does your family feel now?
Vidya: They are very proud. I think post Lage Raho Munnabhai, a lot more people recognise me. Within a week, I can see the change.

Simi: Do you have the capacity of being tough?
Vidya: I'm very stubborn. If I have set my heart on something then I'll go all out to make sure I give it my best shot.

Simi: Are you tough in dealing with people?
Vidya: I am learning to say 'No'! And I realize that I'm ruffling quite a few feathers. But you can't always say yes!

Simi: Do you feel you are the chosen one?
Vidya: When we want things to happen in a certain way and they don't, we think that's the end of the world. But I'm a diehard optimist. I believe that all happens for the best.

Simi: You spend a lot of time in the temple.
Vidya: We've always been taught to pray and to believe that there's a supernatural guiding force which is responsible for everything. But I don't think anyone from my family is much into it. They all pray for sure, even if it's on the bed. But I spend a lot of time.

Simi: What gives you such deep faith?
Vidya: I think it's a combination of what I have read and the experiences that people have had. I have seen great things happening to people. When you surrender, it's beautiful. You realise you're not the doer. I don't think any of us are doing anything. We're just playing out God's plan!

Simi: What type of a relationship do you have with God?
Vidya: I think the guy up there is in each one of us.

Simi: Do you talk to him?
Vidya: All the time! Prayer is a self-fulfilling process. When you genuinely want something, like Paulo Coelho said, 'The Universe conspires to get it for you'. Where there is doubt, it won't happen.

Simi: Has your faith ever wavered?
Vidya: Not much any longer. But there were times when I used to be a very badly behaved teenager! But somewhere faith took over and I've been calmer.
