The Bachchans support going green but drive in gas guzzlers

The Bachchan family is often seeing driving around in their sport utility vans (SUVs). Amitabh Bachchan owns a Lexus SUV and is often seen driving around in it to work and even to social events.

Not just Bachchan Sr, even Abhishek and Aishwarya are seen in their bulky SUVs zipping from their studios to home.

During the recent award function for which Big B is a Brand ambassador the family was quite vocal about their concern for the environment.

Amitabh and Abhishek were heard talking about the need to control the emission of toxic gases, at the green carpet associated with the event. Even though there isn't a ban or a regulatory control on SUVs in India; according to a recent bill passed by the United States, the government plans to phase out oversized SUVs in order to reduce global emissions of carbon dioxide.

A industrywala says, "It is funny how they talk about global warming and eco-friendly means of travel, but when it comes to implementing it themselves, they fail miserably."

If the current fleet of 25-40 million sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in the United States were to shift to more fuel efficient cars, such as those available in Europe, more than 1.6 billion people in the world currently living in the dark can be provided electrification without any increase in the levels of greenhouse gases that lead to climate change. India, for decades, has demanded at the UN climate negotiations that it must be given a greater 'carbon space' in the atmosphere to allow its 600 million poor access to electricity. The industrialised nations have argued that if India grows and powers its poor, the already limited space left in the atmosphere to spew out GHG gases would lead to irreversible and dangerous climate change.
