Krishna Mehta and the coat(s) of many colours

Designer Krishna Mehta put together a fabulous and successful show inspired by the Biblical story of Joseph and The Coat of Many Colours. There was a live band that played some tuneful music. Only dapper male models walked the ramp. Boman Irani, Cyrus Broacha and Kunal Khemu walked the ramp to promote their new film 99. Cyrus did a Bhangra on the ramp leaving the audience amused.

There were rich fabrics and weaves and textures like brocade with prints in vertical stripes and geometric designs. The colours were mauve, green, blue, orange, red, dark pink. All of them were dark and rich and none of them looked bright. The men wore printed scarves with all their traditional outfits. It was an elegant and royal collection that told the story of Joseph and The Coat of Many Colours.

Explaing her collection designer Krishna Mehta said, “The Biblical theme just came to my head and I have depicted it in an Indian way. People thought I was crazy to have just men walk for me in this collection but I am allowed to be crazy here. Keeping the recession in mind, we haven’t used any embroidery but the fabric has beautiful textures and weaves in it. I never compromise so it still looks very rich.”

Cyrus Broacha was at his humourous best and wasn’t letting anyone talk. “I was very nervous before the show and we had a lot of fun backstage. I was surprised to see the male models backstage as they don’t have any hair on their torso and the male species is supposed to have hair. Krishna is paying us ten rupees for our appearance. And we are promoting our new film 99 which is an adult film with a lot of sex in it,” he joked and had everyone in splits as usual. At the end of the evening, Broacha walked out in his slippers with his show shoes in his hand.

Boman was a little more poised than his Parsi colleague. “I am going to be a little more formal and say that it was wonderful walking for Krishna and it is my second time on the ramp. We all have a theatre background but walking on the ramp in front of the crowd felt so different Cyrus isn’t going to let me talk anymore so that is all I have to say.”

Young actor Kunal Khemu said, “I have walked the ramp before and I usually wear jeans, tees and slippers so this traditional outfit is absolutely new for me and I feel great. I have cut my hair for 99 and thanks to the film I have a new hairstyle and thanks to Krishna Mehta I have a new style.
