Anil Kapoor meets Super Model Naomi Campbell

On his recent trip to South Africa, Anil Kapoor met ex-supermodel Naomi Campbell and her billionaire Russian boyfriend Vladislav Doronin and was surprised to learn that she was a fan of 24, a TV series, in which he features in the final season.

Anil, who is the Brand Ambassador of South Africa, was invited by the government to watch the FIFA World Cup final.

He was at the presidential suite at the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg with a few friends like industrialist Lakshmi Mittal and President Jacob Zuma's son, when a messenger told him that Naomi Campbell wanted to meet him.

It is learnt that the ex-supermodel recognised Anil from Slumdog Millionaire as well as his Hollywood TV series 24.

Says a source, "Naomi kept addressing Anil as President. He wondered why until he realised that it was because he had played the role of Middle Eastern peace-keeping leader Omar Hassan, President of the fictional Islamic Republic of Kamistan, in 24."

The actor and Naomi exchanged numbers and email IDs and promised to keep in touch. When she heard Anil's daughter was shooting in London, she also took down Sonam's number and promised to get in touch with her.

Naomi introduced Anil to boyfriend Vladislav and they spoke about how much they were enjoying their stay in SA.

Mai Mumbai: Fashion for Relief

33 Indian designers and 20 international designers joined hands with Vikram Chatwal and a host of other celebrities including international supermodel Naomi Campbell to raise funds for the victims of the Mumbai terror attacks on 26/11.

Rahul Khanna was the host for the star studded show. He said, “Let us not forget 26/11 when the world watched our icons burn. We saw the turmoil for 60 hours. Many people died because there were not enough ambulances to transport them to the hospitals from the station. Fashion for Relief is to show that we are back in business and here to conduct business. There will be a silent auction for all the outfits showcased on the ramp and the proceeds will go to Teesta Setalvad and the Citizens for Justice and Peace Group to buy ambulances.”

Naomi Campbell stormed the ramp to a burst of applause in a gorgeous hot pink Vikram Phadnis kurta with silver work and jeans. We know why she is a supermodel!

Vikram Chatwal followed suit in an Arjun Khanna khadi jacket which was navy blue with red embroidery and jeans.

The audience started clapping and whistling when Arjun and Mehr Rampal walked together in Rohit Bal, of course as they both have been his muses in the past. Arjun wore a lavish black and maroon kurta whil Mehr sparkled in a gorgeous green, red and gold kurta.

Farhan Akhtar zoomed in a sleek black and white Raghuvandra Rathore suit and waved to his fans and bowed and clapped as the crowd clapped and whistled for him

Milind Soman, sporting a salt and pepper look and a shawl, kurta and pants credited to him and Madhu Jain had the crowd cheering wildly for him. He may be 40 plus but hasn’t lost his supermodel charm at all.

Porcelain beauty Feroze Gujral dazzled in Emanuel Ungaro’s draped little clack dress.

Ujjwala Raut had all eyes on her when she sparkled in a white with black motifs Yves Saint Laurent short number. She is the first Asian face of the Parisian brand so it is no wonder she sported the designer

Former supermodel and Mahastrian Mulgi Madhu Sapre wowed audiences in a shimmering draped beige Dolce and Gabbana gown with heavy silver embellishments.

Hot mama Malaika Arora Khan oozed oomph and grace as she shook her booty in a baby mauve Versace gown with neck and waist mirror work

Naomi Campbell was back in a Sabyasachi saree that was all black with black embellishments and a very heavy red and gold border. What a stunner!

Deepika Padukone closed the show in a classic Carolina Herrera gown which was the colour of champagne with exquisite silver and sequins embellishments.

Gregory David Roberts and Princess Francoise Sturdza were all lovey dovey on the ramp in beautiful Indian style designs by Araza Morelli.

Unconventional hottie Rahul Bose cut a sleek silhouette in a grey suit by Narendra Kumar Ahmed

Kunal Kapoor looked like a Punjabi Puttar in a tie and dye (bandhini) sherwani in brown by royal designer Raghuvendra Rathore. He played around with his glares which he passed to Farhan Akhtar.

Naomi Campbell: I love India

When you look at Naomi Campbell up close you can’t help but gush about how strikingly beautiful and sweet she is. And when she speaks, you know there is more to her than just good looks. The lady knows her work and has real passion for it. She is powerful and is using her influential position to help the public. It is fashion with a purpose, for a cause. And when she walks the ramp, she owns it and the attitude she oozes lets you know why the supermodel has lasted 23 years.

Speaking about the warm welcome she has recieved in India, Naomi says, "Thank you so much for being here tonight and supporting Fashion for Relief and Mai Mumbai. This afternoon I decided I wanted to go to the Oberoi and the Taj because I have lived there on my many India visits. It was good for me to go and see what actually happened at the site where tragedy stuck. To hear the stories of families who waited for three days just to know if their loved ones were alright or alive and of the people who were working there; what happened to them was devastating."

"I am from London and I have lived with the fear of terrorism. We have bomb scares on trains and we have to get off but the tragedy hasn’t been as great as this. The wounds don’t heal quickly, we are aware of that. With this night (the event) we want to let you know that we haven’t forgotten you; that we are mourning your families and your loss and sending you our deepest condolences. For tonight’s fashion relief, we are extremely grateful to everyone who participated whether the hair or make up people or models, they have all given their time for free. This successful collaboration is because of them, even if I came up with the idea. It wouldn’t have happened without everyone’s efforts. I am with IMG and it is even more special for me. It is at times like these that we have to join hands and show our solidarity," she added, "This is a great country; I have been here many times before and have always been very well accommodated. The people here are very warm and welcoming with beautiful smiles. I have had many people calling me from around the world like China and Brazil, asking me about this event, if it is really happening or if it just the press generating it. I was like, 'yes, this is really gonna happen'.”

Speaking about the concept of Fashion For Relief (FFR), Campbell says, "It was set up over four years ago. It involves the fashion community to support a worldwide cause. The first FFR was held in New York City where we had the tragic hurricane Katrina. The second was held in London during Fashion Week for the flood related damage in England in 2007. We collected funds for the Rotary Blood and Disaster Appeal as we had a lot of disaster trauma due to the floods in Gloucestershire. The 2008 FFR was held in the UK with the PM’s wife Sarah Brown for the White Ribbon Alliance which is bigger than a charity. We had a very big Ribbon meeting in Davos and Indra who is the head of Pepsi and the first lady CEO I have met. She is a wonderful woman and an Indian native and you all should be very proud of her. She was the honorary for that night. We have everyone in place for the final auction for the Mumbai Fashion for Relief. Everything on the show is for sale."

Sush-Naomi: Friends forever

Why has Sushmita Sen been missing from the ‘bada parda’? Ask her and she laughs, “This year, I was busy shooting and there were several post-production delays.

But in 2009, there’s Dulha Mil Gaya with Shah Rukh Khan, a David Dhawan film Do Not Disturb and Karma Confesssions and Holi with Randeep Hooda and Naomi Campbell.”

Sush seemed visibly excited to have worked with Naomi. She talks about her experience of working with the supermodel, as she says, “Naomi is like a child. She can throw tantrums and be difficult at times. But at the end of the day, she is a great human being and gorgeously stunning.”

But with two of the world’s most beautiful women together, didn’t things ever get catty? “Not at all,” assures Sushmita, adding, “In fact, we got along like a house on fire.”
