GUESS who wants to be like Govinda!

Here are some clues: Masti. Dhamaal. Heyy Babyy. Son of former chief minister of Maharashtra. Sigh. Riteish Deshmukh.

COMIC talent Riteish Deshmukh had proved his mettle with the hit films Masti, Dhamaal and Heyy Babyy. After sharing screen space with Sanjay Dutt (Dhamaal) and Akshay Kumar (Heyy Babyy), he now adds Amitabh Bachchan (Aladdin) and Govinda (Do Knot Disturb) to his list of costars.

We caught Riteish in a nostalgic mood. Excerpts from the conversation.

On his current comedy, Do Knot Disturb
It has a buffet of fantastic actors such as Govinda, Rajpal Yadav, Ranvir Shorey, Sohail Khan, Lara Dutta, Sushmita Sen. You can expect the film to be a wholesome entertainer because David Dhawan is directing it.

The title is funny. Personally, I do not like to be disturbed when I am sleeping, so I turn off my phone and put a notice outside my room!

On being a die-hard fan of co-star Govinda
I still remember the song I am a street dancer from the film, Ilzaam, which released in 1986. Govinda became a rage with that film. I was still at school then. I was totally mesmerised by him and his work in Aankhen, Coolie No. 1, Shola Aur Shabnam, Raja Babu, Hero No. 1, etc. I have seen all his films.

All the comedy films I have worked in, whether Masti, Dhamaal, Apna Sapna Money Money or Heyy Babyy, have been inspired by Govinda. I think he is the best comic actor. In fact, he is one of the best and most versatile actors we have because he portrays every emotion flawlessly.

I have always wanted to be like him and act like he does. But after working with him, I realised, “Yeh toh mushkil nahin, naamumkin hai (This is not only tough, it is impossible)”.

Govinda is the King of Comedy. He is (pretty much) the foundation of commercial comedy in India. I am not here to compete with him. I hope I complement him in all our scenes.

On costars Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta
I love Sushmita and Lara. They haven’t got their Miss Universe titles for nothing. They are extremely beautiful women and very good actresses.

How great is it to have them both in one film? They are so tall. I have to stand on my toes to talk with them!

On his Aladdin costar and family friend Amitabh Bachchan completing 40 years in the industry
His journey has been extraordinary. I don’t think any actor has had or will have such an amazing career with such a huge fan following. It is commendable that he is still among the top actors in our country. I have done two films with him already and have gone on a world tour (Untouchables) with him.

I am a huge fan of his and I hope he continues to entertain us. I wait for his films to release so I can watch them, even though I am doing Aladdin with him. Sharing screen space with him, shooting with him, watching him act, just being around him has been an extremely memorable time for me.

I am going to preserve the DVD of Aladdin so I can prove to everyone that I have worked with the one and only Amitabh Bachchan!

On establishing himself as a comic talent
Comedy is something that depends on the way the scene is written and directed. As an actor, you have your own input and you like it if people appreciate your work and laugh because of what you do.

If you have a brilliant co-actor, the scene only gets better and funnier. I will only learn more from the experienced actors I work with.
