Aamir Khan: Love is the most important thing in my life

Good things come in small packages. And that couldn't have been more true than in the case of birthday boy Aamir Khan who turns 44 today. In fact Aamir's youthful appearance and energy could give teenagers a complex.

The polite and hospitable superstar invited the media over to his house to join in the celebrations on Saturday afternoon. Dressed in a casual pair of jeans and a red t-shirt, the actor laughed with the scribes as he signed autographs and greeted all his young fans who were waiting to meet him. In a freewheeling chat, the versatile superstar who lives life on his own terms talks about his most memorable birthday, what power and happiness mean to him, why he doesn’t believe in the number game and why he can’t have a piece of his own birthday cake.

You are making everyone eat your cake. Why can’t you take a bite?
I can’t eat cake because I am on a strict General Motors Diet for 3 Idiots. It is my fourth day. I have had a glass of milk since morning and one banana; I have seven more bananas to go. I wouldn’t recommend this diet because it is a crash diet but I have to lose weight for 3 Idiots. I am going make other people eat cake but I cannot eat this delicious cake.

What do you have to say to all your fans?
I would like to send my gratitude, happiness and love to all my well wishers.

What is your birthday resolution and wish?
My resolution is that I live life the right way and do good work. I want the world to be happy, our country to progress and the elections are coming up so I want the right people to be chosen.

Are you planning to enter politics?
No, I am not going to contest the elections or enter politics. I sincerely believe that people who really care for the nation should be elected. Our vote is very important. Everyone should use it rightly. We must gather information about all the candidates like their education. Nowadays, according to the Election Commission, every candidate has to fill up an Affidavit about his criminal record, education and other information. We must make use of that information.

Back to your birthday, what are you doing this evening?
I am spending the evening with my family and children.

Can you recall your most memorable birthday?
I don’t give a lot of importance to my own birthdays. My children’s and family members’ birthdays are more important. My most memorable birthday was many years ago, when I was 20. I had gone to Eros theatre with my girlfriend. Obviously, I hardly paid any attention to the movie!

What gifts have you got today?
I haven’t opened any gifts yet, so I don’t know what I have got.

You have been called the most powerful personality in Bollywood. What are your comments on that?
Power is something that every person has. It doesn’t matter how much strength or power you have; what matters is how you use it. I recently went to an awards function where real heroes were honoured. These are unknown people from different corners of India. They are ordinary people doing extraordinary and inspirational work. There is a 70 year old woman who sells vegetables but at the same time she is running a medical clinic for free. Just imagine how she does it. They are ordinary people who are not famous or rich but they are contributing to society and helping people. That is amazing and that is true power. I am a rich man with a lot of fame but I am only using it to my own advantage and not helping anyone; so my power is of no use. Power makes sense when you help other people and contribute to society

What is your take on competition?
I am grateful for all the success and love that God has blessed me with. I don’t compete with anyone. I don’t believe in and neither am I interested in competition or numbers. I don’t want to wear any crown or sit on any throne. I just want to do good work and do the work that makes me happy. I want to entertain my audiences through new and different films. As far as I am concerned, I try to do good work. My excitement is not in the number game. My excitement lies in doing and showing films that my audience hasn’t seen before. I want to follow excellence and not success. I am not interested in numbers. My relationship with my audience is not to do with numbers; I get to know about the equation on Fridays. You can’t measure that in numbers.

You don’t attend the mainstream award functions. Do you think the Oscar is the ultimate award?
I don’t think the Oscar is the ultimate award. My audience’s love is the ultimate award. Taare Zameen Par was loved by audiences and it moved them so that is my award.

Taare Zameen Par which we as Indians loved, didn’t get selected at the Oscars while Slumdog Millionaire, which many didn’t like as much as TZP, won big at the Oscars. What is your take on that?
People abroad loved Slumdog Millionaire because their point of view is very different from ours. I am glad they have liked the film. Their culture and society is different. Everyone has different taste. Take food for example. I love Indian food and I need my dal chawal. When I go to America, I can eat their food for a few days but then I start craving for dal chawal. There is no reason for that. That way, everything is culturally different. Indian culture might amaze you for a few days but then you will get used to it. That way people have different cultures and people get used to their own cultures. People like the food of their own country and they may or may not like Indian food. Like they can’t eat spicy food but we can’t digest our food if it isn’t spicy. So we all have different tastes.

You are famous, powerful and adored by the nation. What do you have left to achieve?
I have a lot more to achieve. The Oscars are not important. I just want to do better work. You can’t quantify your work with one award. I think that I have followed one diktat in life: I only do the things that make me happy. I think that has worked for me. Because I am happy doing what I do, I do it well. People should follow their hearts and do what makes them happy. People should not do what makes them successful or rich as happiness is more important. I want to continue walking on this road of happiness and make other people happy through my films and work.

What is your philosophy in life?
My philosophy is this: whichever field you are in, you should follow excellence and then success will follow you. You must do good work and then success will have no choice but to follow you. There is no point in running after success.

How do you stay so fit and youthful?
I eat well: my diet is balanced and healthy. I drink a lot of water. I try to be happy.

What is the most important thing in your life?
Love is the most important thing in my life. A man needs love, care and health. Money and power can’t buy health and love. I wish this for myself and for everyone.
