Rahman bags 2 Oscars, Resul 1
As expected, A R Rahman won 2 Academy Awards for his beautiful score for Slumdog Millionaire and for the foot-tapping song Jai Ho. Resul Pookutty won the Oscar for Sound Mixing.
Alicia Keys and Zac Efron presented Rahman with the award. A very humble and composed Rahman said, "Before coming here I was excited and terrified, the last time this happened was during my marriage. We have a dialogue in Hindi films "Mere Paas Maa Hai" which means I have my mother so I have my mother here with me. I am grateful for all my blessings. I would like to thank the Academy, my musicians in Mumbai and Chennai, Blaaze and the team of Slumdog Millionaire."
Then he kept his award and came back on stage to sing 'O Saya' with Indian dancers aiding his performance. After Rahman, John Legend sang 'Down To Earth' from Wall-E and Rahman came back with Tanvi Shah to sing the super hit song, Jai Ho. John came back and sang his own song, so the two had a jugal bandi of sorts. Alicia Keys and Zac Efron then presented the Oscar to the undisputed winner, Rahman, making that his second Oscar win in just one night. Rahman came back on stage, smiled, and said, "I would like to thank my whole crew, Danny Boyle, Mumbai. The essence of the film is optimism and the power of hope. All of my life, I had two choices between love and hate. I chose love. God Bless."
Another Indian from down South Resul Pookutty won the Oscar for Sound Mixing.
In his acceptance speech, Resul was visibly shaky and nervous; he had to take a few deep breaths to calm himself. He said, "This is unbelievable, I can't believe this! I share this stage with two magicians who re-created the cacophony and sounds of Mumbai with pure resonance. I come from a country where one word is preceded by silence and followed by silence. That word is Om. This is history being created. I dedicate the award to my country, India. I would like to thank Danny Boyle, the Academy, Fremantle, Loveleen Tandon and the entire team of Slumdog Millionaire." Resul shared the award with Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke.
Chris Dickens won the Oscar for Film Editing for Slumdog Millionaire. Slumdog Millionaire has won 6 Academy Awards out of 7 so far. Sound Mixing, Film Editing, Original Score and Original Song were consecutive wins. Jai Ho!
