Nearly Rs50 crore are riding on the two big Diwali/Eid releases - Don and Jaan-e-Mann

MUMBAI: It’s the season of plenty and Bollywood is gearing up for a bigger slice of an ever-expanding pie.

After raking in the moolah with hits like Rang De Basanti, Fanaa, and Lage Raho Munnabhai earlier this year, the film industry is ready to take advantage of the festival spending free with a fast-paced thriller and a take of love and longing.

Nearly Rs50 crore are riding on the two big Diwali/Eid releases - Don and Jaan-e-Mann. Trade pundits estimate that nearly 1,000 prints each of the two films will hit the domestic and international markets.

Diwali is traditionally the preserve of big-ticket movies. “With Eid falling in the same week as the festival of lights for the last couple of years, it’s time for a double celebration at the box office,” said Don producer Ritesh Sidhwani.

No wonder, then, that cinema halls across the country are looking forward to huge turnouts. “We are expecting footfalls to go up by about 40 per cent,” said Tushar Dhingra, COO, Adlabs Films.

To attract more customers, exhibitors are planning ahead. For instance, the Fame chain of multiplexes opened bookings for Don a couple of weeks before the film releases on October 20. “We are just trying to give viewers a chance to plan their festival schedule,” said Shunali Shroff of Fame Cinemas.

Trade analyst Amod Mehra attributed the frenzy partly to the popularity of the two Khans — Shah Rukh, who stars in Don, and Salman, who will be seen in Jaan-e-Mann. But he added a note of caution. “While the season may set the mood for the initial collections, the content of the films will finally decide their fate,” he said.
