Sonam admits she is the 'young' face of the same brand endorsed by Aishwarya

The Aishwarya Rai-Sonam Kapoor cold war has been written about and discussed extensively but the two actresses have never spoken about it. Now that has changed. In an interview to Koel Purie on the chat show On the Couch with Koel, The Kapoor girl talked about the Cannes fiasco, and about being the 'young' face of the international cosmetic brand.

A source present during the shoot reveals, "Koel got straight to the chase and asked Sonam what she felt about the Cannes disaster. Sonam initially hesitated, then came the all- telling response: "I don't want to remember it as it is not a pleasant thing to recall."

When Koel asked her if she was disappointed about not making it to the festival, Sonam said that she looked at the visit as a part of her "professional obligation." When Koel labelled her 'diplomatic', the Saawariya girl laughed, "But I am always diplomatic, I have never been not diplomatic."

Continuing her questions on Cannes, Purie further asked the young actress to comment on her statement of being the young face of the cosmetic brand. "To this, Sonam exuberantly replied, "I say it as I see it!" and left it there. There was sarcasm in her tone, which indirectly hinted that Ash indeed had taken a back seat in the brand game, making way for the younger actress."

Throughout the interview, Sonam was at her candid best and touched various subjects from being called a motormouth, to her link-up with Ranbir and her films. "It's one of Sonam's most open interviews. The only time you see her get tense is when she's questioned about Ash and the Cannes drama."

The interview with Sonam airs on Headlines Today on June 6 at 7 pm.

John wants only Kat

Looks like John Abraham is taking his fondness for Katrina Kaif to a new level. The actor has been suggesting Kat's name to every producer who comes his way.

Recently, when Johnny boy was offered Rob Cohen's The Jewel of India, he told the makers to chose Katrina over Deepika.

Even though Cohen himself has personally admitted he's mesmerised by Deepika, John insisted that Katrina had wider appeal.

A source reveals, "John sounded like Kat's agent. He kept telling the producers how the international film needed a leading lady like Katrina as she has a more foreign appeal.

John also claimed he would reduce his fee if they got Kat on board."

Now only if he would concentrate more on acting rather than marketing, he wouldn't have to take that pay cut!

Vipul rebukes Ash for latecoming!

After Aishwarya Rai repeatedly reported late to the sets of Action Replay, director Vipul Shah decided to teach her the importance of punctuality.

A source said, “Aishwarya would always come late to the sets. On days when she came on time, she would spend most of her time doing up her hair, make-up and clothes while everybody kept waiting for her. The entire schedule of the shoot would get disrupted.”

The unit is shooting with Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya at ND Studios, Karjat. “Vipul is extremely particular about shooting the scenes aesthetically. He was fed up of waiting for hours for Aishwarya. Surprisingly, he made his dismay very clear on the sets a few days ago,” said a source.

Ta l k i n g about the particular incident, the source said, “That day, Aishwarya came to the sets, changed into her costume, did her make-up and hair and was ready to shoot. After the entire process, which took her several hours, Vipul shot precisely for a minute before declaring pack-up. Aishwarya was aghast that Vipul had made her get ready only to shoot with her for a minute. She openly expressed her displeasure to which Vipul shot back, ‘Apne sets pe sab time par aate hain aur sab time par jaate hain.’ This was a clear indication of how irritated Vipul was.”

As expected, Vipul denied our story and said, “This is totally false. Aishwarya has an extraordinary look in the film. We always knew it would take time for her to get ready because of which we had planned the shoots accordingly. We have not had any delays because of her. In fact, she is working 15 hours every day for my film. She is extremely professional and I am delighted to be working with her.”

Karishma Kapoor : Marriage is like a comedy

After judging couples for their dancing skills, Karisma Kapoor is back as a judge on Star One's Hans Baliye. But this time Lolo is giving real life celeb couples points for their comic timing. Giving her company is her hit director of the 90s, David Dhawan. Dressed in fitted black jeans and a shirt, Karisma was at her relaxed best.

Despite facing an army of lensmen and electronic journalists, Karisma diplomatically handled the media, making sure everyone got their share of news without a commotion. She might be absent from the silver screen, but Karisma hasn't lost any of her star powered-magnetism and grace.

Revealing her fitness secret, Lolo - the doting mother said, "Running behind my daughter keeps me fit and healthy."

On delaying her Bollywood comeback and the newfound love for TV she said, "I love reality television because nothing is scripted. This show is truly a first of its kind because couples have never come together for stand up comedy on TV."

However she said she was not stressed about making a Bollywood comeback and was enjoying the space she was in. At the same time she did hint at working on something with David Dhawan. "Our team is one of the most stable and successful collaborations ever in Bollywood."

As a judge she said she would be on the look out for crackling timing between the participants. But Karisma also promised to be less lenient than she was on Nach Baliye. As for her famous three claps – "I have something else in mind, keep watching."

On the concept of couples doing comedy Karisma said, "Marriage is also like comedy. There is more humour with your life partner after marriage. Sanjay and I have funny fights over the smallest of things."

Karisma added, "On this show the couples have drawn references from their real life chemistry. And that makes it even more entertaining." Apart from Hans Baliye, Karisma will also been seen on Salman Khan's game show where she will feature along with Kareena.

When asked about the much-hyped KJo party where she crossed paths with Abhi-Ash, Karisma said, "Let's not talk birthday parties. We have a show to promote."

Salman mania hits runaway boys

Runaway teens reach Mumbai from Shimla to meet their idol, Salman Khan. Instead of the actor, who wasn't at home, the boys meet two more heroes in a city overrun by villains

Here's a story that will restore your faith in this city.

Two star-struck teens from Shimla hit Mumbai to meet their hero, Salman Khan. Like so many other stories, this one too could have ended up in tragedy, but for two unusual people the boys ran into a passenger on the train to Mumbai and a cop.

Thank you: The two boys from Shimla (faces blurred, as they are minors), with Rishu Jarat (hiding his face), who helped the boys, flanked by the Bhoiwada cops

There are few heroes who inspire as much love and craze as Salman Khan. Ask Rahul Kanojia (16) and Dinesh Gupta (14). The two teenagers from Shimla ran away from home and boarded a train to Mumbai only to meet their idol. Fortunately, the police managed to trace them before the minors fell in the wrong hands, thanks to a Good Samaritan.

In their police statement, the boys said that on Sunday, they took a bus from Shimla to Ambala, from where they bought tickets and boarded the Golden Temple Express to Mumbai. They had Rs 15,000 with them, which Dinesh had taken from his uncle's pocket, along with two debit cards.

In the train, they met one Rishu Jarat of Ludhiana, who took them to a relative's saloon in Parel when they arrived at Dadar station on Tuesday evening. Meanwhile, their worried parents had registered a missing complaint at a Shimla police station. While Rahul is in Std IX at Shimla Model School, Dinesh studies in Std VII at Ahuja Education Centre.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Shimla) Anand Kumar Dhiman told MiD DAY, "On Wednesday, the boys contacted their parents from an unknown mobile number saying they were at Delhi railway station and that they were safe. The boys also made their parents speak to a stranger who identified himself as Rishu Jarat. However, the mobile tower showed the location of the mobile phone somewhere in Maharashtra. Rishu had also provided a landline number to their parents, which was traced to a saloon in Parel."

Abduction

At first Dhiman thought it was a case of abduction. He contacted the Mumbai Zonal DCP Sanjay Bhaviskar, who directed the Bhoiwada police station to trace the boys, who were found at the same saloon. "The timely act of the young boy Rishu has prevented the boys from falling into the wrong hands," said Bhaviskar.

When the boys told Bhaviskar about their desire to meet Salman, he was moved. So, yesterday, the cops took the boys to Galaxy Apartments on Bandstand, Bandra, where Salman lives. Unfortunately, the actor was not at home, but the cops took them to Bandra Fort and St Andrews High School, where an ad shoot was on. "Even though they couldn't meet Salman, the kids were happy that they got a chance to see the shooting," said senior PI Prakash George of Bandra police station.

The excited young boys told MiD DAY, "We enjoyed the film shoot and are happy we came to Mumbai. We promise not to run away from home again." The boys are currently with Bhoiwada police and will be handed over to their parents who are expected to reach Mumbai today. While Dinesh's father is an agent in a vegetable market, Rahul's father runs a garment shop.

Preity lonesome in America

When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

Ask Preity Zinta, who chose an ideal outlet for the stress built-up over work and emotional trauma. She chose to spend time by herself on a 20-day trip to LA and New York.

A source said, “Preity has been stressed out for a while now. Ever since the IPL began, she has been on her toes. Though she is the owner of Kings XI Punjab, she chose to don the role of an active team member at the beck and call of her team members. As a result, she would wake up much earlier than everyone did and go to sleep only after her team members hit the sack. Her enthusiasm cost her health and very soon she was down with a sore throat and fever.

To add to her woes, her break-up with Ness Wadia, her long-time industrialist boyfriend, started doing the rounds at the same time. Already stressed because of her broken relationship, Preity was slowly getting bogged down by the media attention. She was waiting for the right opportunity to get away from the spotlight. Once the IPL was over, she came to Mumbai to complete some paper work and meet her mother. She eventually flew off for a 20-day vacation to LA and New York on Wednesday night.”

Confident that her impromptu holiday plans would nurse her wounds and her exhausted mind, Preity is also looking forward to letting her hair down. The source added, “She’s a mature person who doesn’t want to lie low and appear like a heartbroken lover. Preity wants to enjoy life and has already planned activities like catching up on movies and attending rock concerts. This well-deserved break is also a golden opportunity for her to catch up with old friends in LA and New York, whom she hasn’t met for years.”

The dimpled actress was so kicked about her holiday plans that she even backed out of performing at an awards function.

Though Preity was unavailable for comment, her spokesperson confirmed the news. She said, “Yes, Preity has taken off on a holiday to LA and New York for 20 days. She’s been working hard and needed a break very badly

Katrina stalked

Last week, Katrina Kaif had the scare of her life when she learnt she was being stalked.

To make matters worse, the stalker managed to hoodwink the security guards in her building and landed up at the actress’ house twice. Fortunately, he was handed over to the police last week.

A close friend of Katrina said, “The man had been constantly hanging out outside Katrina’s building but no one paid any attention to him. But, a week ago he went up to her house early in the morning and told the domestic help that Katrina had summoned him. It was 7.30am and as Katrina was asleep, the domestic help called up Katrina’s business manager, who asked the man to come back later in the evening.”

When the stalker reached Katrina’s house in the evening, she wasn’t home. But he did manage to meet her business manager. During the course of the conversation, the actress’ manager realised that the man needed medical help as he was behaving and talking in a strange manner. According to the business manager, she immediately phoned the police who reached Katrina’s house within seven minutes and arrested him. At the police station, he was released but not before being given a strict warning.

“The police acted promptly even though they were unaware that the call had come from Katrina’s manager. Meanwhile, Katrina has had a word with the building authorities and the security has been beefed up to ensure that the unpleasant incident isn’t repeated. Incidentally, the stalker was seen outside her building even after the police warning, but he left on noticing the increased security,” added the source.

Katrina’s business manager confirmed the incident and said, “Yes, this did happen and we had to call the police.”

Priyanka dives 40 feet!

Almost every cine-goer knows what a daredevil Priyanka Chopra can be on screen.

After all who can forget her stunts in movies like Don and Drona. However, while she’s quite a gutsy femme fatale on screen, off screen too she’s not much different. The actress recently revealed her toughie side when shooting in Bangkok for Pyaar Impossible. A source said, “We were shooting by the pool-side and after pack-up most of the actors retreated to their rooms. However, Priyanka insisted on staying on for a while. And everyone got a shock when she decided to dive into the pool from a diving board that was almost 40 feet high. We were very sceptical and tried to talk her out of it, but she went ahead with it.” But once the actress emerged from the pool smiling, co-star Uday Chopra too decided to join in the fun, and admitting that the plunge was a scary one, applauded PC for her courage.

Saif & I respect my past: bebo

Kareena Kapoor is hard to get, there’s no glossing over that. But once you do have her - in a manner of speaking, like DT did when she came to Delhi a couple of days ago - this girl keeps her word, keeps her cool and keeps her wits about her.

She honoured her promise to take time out for a chat at Le Meridien, and in that chat, there were no unanswered questions, no matter how personal the subject. Bebo’s in a happy bubble of her own, it seems.

She doesn’t mind questions on Shahid Kapur, for instance. Do Shahid conversations make her unhappy? “Not at all!” Bebo smiles serenely. “And that’s because I respect my past. Both Saif and I respect my past. Shahid is a wonderful human being and it’s extremely sad that things couldn’t work out. I don’t think that there’s anything much to say, but the fact is that I’ve been left with some wonderful memories. I’ll cherish them forever,” says Kareena. So she doesn’t think much about rumours linking Shahid to his female co-stars? “Why should they? That’s my past,” she repeats.

Other things have happened in the past - like current beau Saif Ali Khan visiting her, or vice versa, when they’re away from each other. How come he wasn’t with her on this visit to Delhi? “This time he’s working. He’s also a producer now and busy with his film Love Aaj Kal with Imtiaz Ali. Besides, he doesn’t need to come everywhere. I mean, we spend enough time together. We take out a lot of time for each other. That’s important,” she says.
Marriage is not, though - important, we mean. She’s called marriage with Saif “just a formality” in the past. Is she going to move in with him? “Not right now. We travel a lot and we’re together pretty often. Besides, work takes up most of our time.” And what about the references to her as chhoti begum? “About chhoti begum ... I honestly feel it’s something we should save for a little later. Both Saif and I are working right now, and of course, I look forward to a wonderful future with Saif, but nothing is decided. Marriage? Not for two years,” she answers.

And tattoos? Never! “Saif doesn’t like women with tattoos. He feels that a woman is too pristine and pure to mark herself that way. I believe in the same thing. And I think he knows how much I love him ... ,” says Kareena.

So does the rest of the world, but bindaas Bebo’s on a roll, and seems to have no problems with that either. She says she and Saif have an “added responsibility”, as couples look up to them and their out-in-the-open relationship. “I’ve always been open about my relationships and my work. Saif comes from a very affluent family and a family associated with sports. Sports stands for a lot of integrity and honour. Both of us connect on that level. And I guess we’re trying to fulfil that in public. The audience, fans and the media should know what they should know, and I think we know where to draw the line. So they don’t know where I go on holiday with Saif, but they know that we do go on holidays,” says Kareena.

Another thing everyone knows is that she’s doing the opening act at a soon-to-be-held awards ceremony, but she doesn’t know that Shahid and Priyanka Chopra (her ex’s current purported flame) are doing an act too for their forthcoming Kaminay. “I’ve no idea. I didn’t know that. I really don’t get into what other people do. I’m interested in my work, my stuff, I’m always the last person to ask who, what, where. My monies are met, whatever I want is fulfilled and that is why I’m going to the awards ceremony. There’s no other reason.”

And what’s the reason behind the buzz that things are shaky in her Sudhir Mishra film, Dhruv?
The dates are actually not working out. There’s Stepmom with Kajol and me that I’ve said yes to. Agent Vinod, my film with Saif, was always on priority because I had signed it first. But due to the multiplex issue, Saif is not being able to release Love Aaj Kal on time and so, Agent Vinod can’t be started on time, and hence all my dates get pushed by three months. I’ve told Sudhir that I won’t be able to start the film for the next 9-10 months. If they want to wait for me, they’re welcome to and if not, they can carry on with whoever they like, because Agent Vinod is my priority . Then, maybe some other film together,” she says.

But she hasn’t done a lot of ‘alternative’ cinema post Chameli, has she?
Yes, not apart from Omkara. But all my films this year are performance-oriented. There’s the tentatively titled Qurbaan with Saif, one of the finest roles I’ve been offered after Jab We Met. Then there’s 3 Idiots with Raju and Aamir, Kambakkht Ishq – the totally commercial film with me doing a wonderful fun role. Then there’s Agent Vinod, with an extremely thrilling role for a girl. And there’s also KJo’s Stepmom, where I essay Julia Roberts’ role. Main Aur Mrs Khanna is complete too. Everything in these films is designed to make my role special, otherwise I wouldn’t be a part of them,” she says.

Was it special working with Hollywood biggies in Kambakkht Ishq too?
Sylvester Stallone and Denise Richards are great people. Kambakkht Ishq is a fun film. You can’t go in expecting to see the greatest film. It’s going to be a potboiler. Go with a big bag of popcorn and enjoy the locations and costumes,” she says. But while on Hollywood, did she refuse Chimera with Billy Zane? “Yes, I was offered a film with Billy Zane or someone in it. But you know what? I’m not ready for that. My hands are full with interesting films here, where my role is a central one. I’m happy doing the kind of work I’m doing here right now. Hollywood is not for me just now. People may be vying to go there, I’m not. I want to be the best here. I’m working towards that. I work 18 hours a day for my endorsements, performance and films, because all this is really important to me,” says Kareena.

In-laws are important too – how was her family time with Saif’s mum, Sharmila Tagore? Before going to the Cannes film fest, Sharmila had said that she was looking forward to spending some time with Kareena and Saif, who were going to be holidaying in Italy then. “That didn’t happen. She was in London and Saif and I were in Italy. We weren’t able to meet,” says Kareena. But Sharmila was definitely planning some family time? Adds Kareena, “Yeah, but we didn’t go to London. Our dates didn’t match.”No that it bothers Bebo.

It was special when Kareena held my hand

He may be disappointed with his debut film "Kal Kissne Dekha" being delayed, but newcomer Jackky Bhagnani perks up when he recalls the special moment he shared with childhood friend Kareena Kapoor last week.

In Ahmedabad for a concert to promote his upcoming film, Jackky was nervous until Kareena assured him that everything would be all right.

"I couldn't have been more thankful to her that particular evening when I had to step up on stage in front of a 25,000-strong crowd. I was extremely nervous and was wondering whether I would be able to crack the show till Kareena gave me a helping hand," Jackky told IANS.

He is currently on a six-city tour to promote his debut film, which is a musical thriller.

"She supported me at every step that evening. She calmed me down even as I openly told her that I was very nervous. She simply told me that 'Jackky, you are a nice dancer, just go with the flow and leave yourself to the beats'," he said.

"It was especially sweet of her when she held my hand after the show and introduced me to the public. I will cherish that moment forever because Kareena has been a great friend during my growing up years. However, now it was a superstar actress bringing a newcomer in front of the audience. It couldn't have been bigger," said Jackky, who admits that during the last three years he wasn't really in touch with Kareena.

"We grew up together as kids. Her sister Karisma has worked in a number of movies with dad ('Coolie No. 1', 'Hero No. 1', 'Biwi No. 1'). We all share a great relationship personally as well as professionally. However, even though we were not in touch, she was sweet enough to be just a call away when we requested her to make it for the show," said Jackky.

Added dad Vashu Bhagnani: "The show was a huge success. As the three-hour long show started warming up, close to 25,000 people assembled there to watch the performance. In fact, they got crazy when Kareena and Jackky got together for 'Mauja hi mauja' and 'Marjaani'."

The release date of the film, which was to open in theatres on May 29, has not yet been finalised because of the tiff between producers and multiplex owners over revenue sharing.

Starring debutant Vaishali Desai as the leading lady, "Kal Kissne Dekha" also features Rishi Kapoor and Akshay Kapoor in principal roles with Sanjay Dutt in a special appearance.

Slumdog… kid's father slams Danny Boyle

"Slumdog Millionaire" director Danny Boyle, who rushed to India on Wednesday (May 28) to help the film's child stars, was stunned when a child's father accused him of ignoring them.

Some of the children have become homeless after civic authorities razed their shanties. Boyle had come down to offer them help.

However, Rafiq Qureshi, father of Rubina Ali, 9, left their meeting in anger accusing the filmmaker of neglecting them after the film's global success.

"A house is being provided for the kids...we have been listening this for the last five months...I don't see any house coming our way. The shanty that we were living in has already been razed...where are we getting a house from?

"If they are providing us a house, when are they going to do it? Our kids are literally living on the road now," an exasperated Qureshi told a news channel later.

"Slumdog" producer Christian Colson also participated in the meeting held at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences on the outskirts of the city.

"We are looking for a legal accommodation that should be held by the trust (Jai Ho) to ensure the safety of these kids and it would be properly monitored as well," a calm Boyle told the reporters.

The kids including Azharuddin Ismail M. Shaikh, 10, the main child star of the movie, apart from Rubina, were both thrown on the streets after Mumbai civic authorities demolished their shanties May 14, terming the slum unauthorised.

The producers of the multiple Oscar-award wining underdog drama had earlier announced a setting up Jai Ho Trust to look after the two child stars and ensure that they receive quality education and a house to live in.

When asked about her new address in an affluent neigbourhood, she smiles, "It's very expensive. In fact, most of my earnings are going to go into paying the rent at The Palazzo but I couldn't have it any other way. It's a beautiful place. It's next to Rodeo Drive one of the shopping havens of the world and between Beverly Hills and Hollywood."

And her brother Vikram Singh (co-producer of Mallika's next film Hissss) is not too far away. When he visits LA for the post-production of Hissss, he stays at the Beverly Wiltshire. While the sister chooses to drive her Jaguar, Vikram loves driving around his white Beamer S6.

Deepika in talks to play female lead for Krrish 2

After the release of Kites, Rakesh Roshan will soon start working on Krrish 2. According to well-placed sources, the film is already in the scripting process, with a newer concept. It will feature Hrithik Roshan yet again and Deepika Padukone is being considered for the part of the leading lady.

A source reveals, "After the success of Krrish, the Roshans decided to go ahead with the sequel of the movie. Their first priority was to finish with Kites and then work on Krrish 2. Kites is almost done and is in the post-production stage. Rakesh Roashan's production house FilmKraft is working on Krrish 2. They are at an infant stage and still working on script and the star cast, but it obviously includes Hrithik as the actor."

The source continues, "The layout of the script is ready and it will see Hrithik in a superhero avatar once again. He will be seen saving the Seven Wonders of the World, so naturally the film will be shot extensively at various foreign locations. Hrithik will undergo physical training once again for the role. Like the prequel, this too will have SFX and a big crew of foreign technicians."

It is believed that Papa Roshan is keen to have Deepika for the role opposite Hrithik, as he feels she suits the role perfectly and he was very impressed by her stunts and athletic character in Chandni Chowk To China. When quizzed, Roshan said, "Not thinking of anything till the release of Kites."

Kareena Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan patch up at KJo's party

Karan Johar's birthday party on Monday evening turned out to be an occasion for more than one grand reunion. KJo made sure that Abhishek and Kareena put aside their differences and became friends again.

Following the thawing between Abhi and Bebo, the camaraderie between Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor that evening didn't surprise anyone.

To see them laughing, giggling, whispering and behaving like two long-lost sahelis was something that did bring a smile to all the invitees' faces and added that extra zing to Karan's glamour-gorged party.

The highlight of the evening was Ash and Bebo taking to the dance floor. Finally, the long-standing cold war between the Bachchans and Kapoors that started when Abhi's relationship with Karisma's sister ended, came to an end. All ties had been severed between the Bachchans and Kapoors.

It was reported that Abhishek refused films with Kareena, prompting the emotional girl to react angrily and defiantly. She publicly snubbed Amitabh Bachchan at an award function last year. Very recently, through the subtle efforts of Aishwarya and Karan Johar from both ends, the two families began to dissolve their differences.

KJo's party on Monday evening did the trick. Now it's only a matter of time before Abhishek and Kareena finally come together again for a film after Refugee and Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon. Chances are KJo will design the project.

Brief encounters: Who's the ice maiden now
Ash and Sonam too had a very brief chat. However there was no lets-be-friends vibe between them, even when they spoke to each other for a few minutes. It was very formal and although Ash was warm, Sonam's stance was aloof. A source reveals, "As soon as Ash spotted Sonam, she rushed to her side and gave her a warm hug. She complimented her on the outfit she was wearing and told her how much she loved her style sense." There was no talk about Sonam being dropped from Cannes at the last minute. Minutes into their conversation, Kapoor spotted someone, she excused herself and walked away.

The director also met up with Aamir Khan to discuss his next project.

The star is back from his long holiday with his family in the US and director, Danny Boyle didn’t want to miss his chance of talking to him.

If sources are to be believed, the Slumdog director has expressed his desire to work with Aamir when the actor came down for the premiere of his Oscar winning film.

Saif and Vivek land in legal trouble in New York

Saif Ali Khan and Vivek Oberoi ran into trouble with some policemen while shooting for Rensil D'Silva's film Qurbaan in New York. Both the actors were almost arrested while shooting for the film.

A source said, "Vivek and Saif were shooting in a hilly region in New York. It was a scene where both the actors had to drive a car and the camera was placed quite far, as it was a long shot. The actors kept driving for a long time as they were required to give various takes, because the scene was being shot from several angles. However, the locals, who had no clue that a film shoot was on, started getting suspicious when they saw the two Indians driving around aimlessly. They wasted no time in calling the cops, who immediately came and started questioning Vivek and Saif.”

Vivek and Saif told the policemen that they were actors from India and were shooting for a film. However, the cops refused to believe them. Much to the frustration of the two actors, the cops flatly refused to believe that a shooting was on, as there were no crew member or camera nearby.

“Even though the production team saw what was happening on their monitors, and one of them immediately rushed to help, it took him a good 10 minutes before he could reach the actors. By then, the cops had almost arrested them on suspicion and were all set to take them to the police station. However, the unit member rescued the actors in the nick of time. The cops only let them go after all the necessary documents were shown,” added the source.

Its Raftaar v/s Rann as both are based on the backdrop of a TV channel

The makers of 24x7 Raftaar starring Emraan Hashmi and Neha Dhupia are in a mad rush to release their film. The reason? Percept Picture Company's film and Ram Gopal Varma's Rann starring Amitabh Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh both have similar story lines.

Both stories revolve around the internal politics of a newsroom.

The buzz is that the guys at Percept at miffed at Ramu for starting a film on the same plot as theirs. A source reveals, "There is a big rush between Percept and Ramu to release their films as soon as the multiplex embargo lifts. Since both projects have similar plots and selling points, it's a race to reach first at the finishing post."

When contacted, Navin Shah, CEO of Percept Picture Company says, "Raftaar is a story of one media house using their resources to manipulate the market. The film has an extremely stylish look on the lines of Race and Dhoom." Reacting to comparisions with RGV's Rann, Shah says, "Well, I can vouch for the fact that ours is an original idea. We planned, conceived and made it before Mr Varma, and nothing can change that!."

Adding that his product is superior to Ramu's, he says, "Emraan Hashmi has a huge market of his own. His reach isn't just limited to metros and big cities. While RGV's films have an appeal that's limited to the big cities. We definitely have an edge with the broader appeal. Also, the Pritam-Emraan combination is a sure shot winner, while music has never been a forte for Ramu's film."

Percept plans to release Raftaar some time in August. "I am not aware when Rann is releasing and neither am I bothered. As per the market conditions, we plan to release Raftaar by August."

Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan brainstorm

Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan brainstormed with other producers at a Producers Guild Meeting convened to resolve the spat with multiplex owners on Wednesday, May 27 at Taj Lands End, Mumbai.

Shah Rukh and Aamir looked Mumbai cool in their Tees and jeans. Shah Rukh wore a white V-neck tee, blue distressed jeans and grey sports shoes. Aamir was dressed in a heather grey crew neck Tee, faded blue loose fit jeans and a brown baseball cap.

The meeting started at midnight and ended three hours later on a positive note, with indications that the spat could be resolved over the next couple of days.

Perceived more as actors than producers, Aamir and Shah Rukh are leaders and major stake holders in the industry.

Attentive and observant, Aamir spoke little during the meeting, occasionally chipping in to make a point; Shah Rukh came through as more involved and animated.

The Producers Guild and multiplex owners in India have locked horns over profit sharing, with the producers demanding a 50% share of profits. No Bollywood films have been released since early April.

Guess the murderer and win while watching the film

Picture this if you will: A murder mystery where you (the audience) are actively involved in guessing who the murderer is. SMS your replies to a number given while the film is being screened, before the mystery is solved and you might just walk out of the theatre with a prize.

Easier said than done? Well, we'd like to believe so. We spoke to new filmmaker, Sareesh Sudhakaran, who debuts as a producer and director with his film titled The Impossible Murder. The film employs the marketing tool mentioned earlier.

So what's the film about? Says Sareesh, "It's a murder mystery that clocks in at 81 minutes. An old woman is killed in her bedroom. There are five witnesses who are standing outside the door and when they break in to help her, there is no sign of the murderer or the murder weapon.

This makes it appear as an impossible murder, and the entire story revolves around the detective piecing together the clues and arriving at the solution to the crime three years after it was committed."

The film, due to release in the first or second week of June, will test the waters in select theatres in the Mumbai and Pune territories.

Sareesh is upbeat about his subject matter, even though whodunits have a short shelf life (what with people leaking out the suspense). He says, "Even though all the facts and situations are provided beforehand, the mystery is unsolvable.

Further-more, even after the ending is revealed, no one will be able to discover a flaw in the reasoning of the puzzle. Even if somebody watches a film, they'll go in trying to find a flaw, almost like we're challenging them to." He further claims that no one will be able to find loopholes in the film.

He informs that the audience will receive live feedback on their SMS responses. Five such interactions can take place during the film.

The film was made with individual funding over two years. The film's lead pair is a relatively new cast: Tarun Singh Negi (who plays the lead in the stage version of The Alchemist) and Swati Shetty, a newcomer.

SRK and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan patch up at KJo's b'day bash

Karan Johar's birthday party on Monday night was a night of patch-ups. Especially for the Bachchan boy. Vivek Oberoi and he hugged each other, he exchanged hellos with Karisma Kapoor and chatted at length with SRK.

But the surprise patch-up of the evening was between Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Says a source present at the party, "After Shah Rukh dropped Aishwarya unceremoniously from his home production Chalte Chalte, she never forgave or forgot that. Things between them got worse when SRK and Gauri were not invited to the AbhiAsh wedding.

But the final straw was reports of Shah Rukh having said unflattering things about Ash during a verbal war with Salman, last year. While Salman maintained that SRK had made debasing comments about Ash, SRK swore that he had too much respect for women to demean them.

At the time, Shah Rukh had called the Bachchans' family friend Amar Singh and had explained to him that he hadn't said anything demeaning about the Bachchan bahu, but the damage was done. Battle lines were drawn.

But on Monday night, when Karan brought them together, both sides decided to put aside their differences and make a fresh start. Says a source, "A few minutes into the conversation with Ash, SRK apologised to her." He said, 'I think I owe you an apology because in some way I have wronged you." Ash gracefully accepted the olive branch offered.

After that, Abhishek, Ash, Shah Rukh and Gauri stuck together dancing, chatting and laughing. As the party wound up, Gauri asked her usual group of friends back home to continue the party there. She also invited Ash and Abhishek to come along, and they all piled into one car and headed for Mannat.

Other couples like Hrithik and Sussanne Roshan, Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, Kajaal Anand and Arjun Rampal and Mehr Jesia joined them later. The group partied at SRK's home till 6 am and left after having breakfast." Happy endings are so much fun.

Danny uncle must be busy now

Shyam’s Secret, the Swiss film for the promotion of which Ayush Mahesh Khedekar walked the red carpet at Cannes, needs to be kept a secret, at least for the time being and the child actor knows best.

He wouldn’t part with any details about the film, but is happy blurting out all about his experience, the little trivia, the inability of sharing which weighs heavy on his little chest. He begins the interview with a confident ‘Hi’ and goes on chit-chatting about the little world to which he belongs and the big dreams that the film called Slumdog Millionaire has brought with it.

To begin with, Ayush can’t get over his Cannes hangover and is fiercely vocal about the same. “People knew me there. And when I walked the red carpet, they would be like, ‘Yo Ayush, yo Ayush’. The shutterbugs would also make a beeline to take my pictures. Bahut saare artistes bhi thhe wahan pe, bahut saare fancy kapdon mein.” So, did he take a special liking to any? The child actor says should he mention one, it has to be Eric Cantona, the larger-than-life former French footballer, who appeared in Cannes to promote the Ken Loach-directed movie, Looking for Eric, in which he plays himself. “He’s super cool,” Ayush quips.

The Slumdog experience is also hard to get over and though Ayush can’t talk about Shyam’s Secret, he’s happy talking about the movie that has made him a known face. “I would play games with Danny uncle and Loveleen aunt, who were really nice. But now, Danny uncle must be really busy, so we don’t get to talk much,” Ayush says like a grown up. And what about Freida aunt? Ayush correctly points out that the actor is Freida didi to him and not ‘aunt’. “Freida didi and Dev bhaiya dono hi mere achhe dost hai.”

Mention the famous scene where the youngest Jamal jumps into a pool of excreta, which was made out of chocolate and Ayush gets nostalgic, “Woh toh mere dummy ne kuda tha.” But wasn’t the thought of jumping into a pool of chocolates tempting? “Oh, that was butter chocolate. I don’t like that,” he explains.

Ayush, who aims at giving a shot to Bollywood as well apart from Hollywood ventures, wants to do a movie with his fave hero, Hrithik Roshan. Perhaps a Koi Mil Gaya or a Krrish like venture? “I haven’t thought about the kind of film it could be, but there has to be just the two of us.” Ask him about his fave heroine and the nine-year-old puts it diplomatically, “I like all of them.”

Movies apart, the child actor also places a lot of importance to education. He says it isn’t difficult managing both acting and studies at the same time and it also has to do a lot with two careers that he wants to pursue in future. “I want to be an actor and a scientist when I grow up.”
Now, that’s so sweet!

Is Bebo picture-perfect, Saif

There’s one thing that Saif Ali Khan is very emotional and possessive about.

Nah, it’s not the obvious, lovelies. Just for this one time, it’s not his lady love Kareena we’re talking about here. Apparently, Saifoo holds all his personal photographs very close to his heart. He preserves them with special care, especially all his childhood and family pictures. A lovely snapshot of Saif with his classmates (on the day he got his college degree) hangs on a wall in his room. At times some special shots taken during various movie shoots make it to his personal album. There’s one such picture of him with Abbas-Mustan on the sets of Race, in which Saif is smoking in his casual style. The picture is pinned up in his office room and is also autographed by the director duo and says, “Give up smoking.” We wonder how many of Bebo’s fab pictures adorn those walls? Or does he keep them only close to the heart? Tell us, Saifoo...

John & Kat? Bizarre, says Bips

On rumour mills buzz with stories of Katrina - John link up

What is it about John Abraham that his co-stars find irresistible?

Is it charm, his deeper than the deep sea dimples, or his knight-in-shining-armour image? Whatever it is, it is proven that women (in most cases his co-stars) find John very attractive.

In the past rumours have linked him to Mallika Sherawat (when the two did a world tour), Lara Dutta (Elaan) and Vidya Balan (Salaam-e-Ishq); and now, according to media reports, John’s the object of affection of Salman Khan’s girlfriend Katrina Kaif — his co-star in New York.

While the rumour mills buzz with stories of Katrina and John being phone buddies, some also suggest that Salman actually threw Katrina’s stuff out of his home because he didn’t like the idea of his girl bonding with his foe, John.

Since these rumours come in the wake of the New York publicity campaign, both John and Katrina have got the benefit of the doubt from another section of the media, which believes that all this Kat-John bonding is nothing but a stroke of publicity genius.

John doesn’t wish to comment on the issue. But he did reveal that the text messages exchanged in New York were only work related. “I’m astounded that I’m being pulled into something so bizarre.” A source close to the actor says, “John is not amused by the rumour. He is in a steady relationship with Bipasha Basu. Obviously vested interests have started this campaign.’’ Apparently, the actor believes that since there is absolutely no truth to the whole issue, it will blow over.

Bipasha, the other aggrieved party (Salman being the first), has complete faith in her man and says, “John and I have gone through enough of such gossip. I don’t want to give any credibility to this by even commenting on it. It is malicious and absolutely the most bizarre story involving us. Just for the knowledge of people who actually love us together, we are very happy being with each other, and we’re responsible and protective about our relationship.’’

Why aren’t Bebo, Saif getting married

Vivek Oberoi, whose name is now being linked to sitar player Anoushka Shankar, says good friend Kareena Kapoor pesters him most to find a suitable match for himself and settle down soon.

"The pressure (of getting married) is on, not only from my family but from even Bebo (Kareena's pet name)," said Vivek, who will be seen with Kareena and Saif in Rensil D'Silva's Qurbaan .

"Every time we go out for dinner, she would shake her head and tell me - 'find a nice girl and settle down' and I would hide behind Saif to dodge the bullet. We had some great laughs," he said.

The actress seems to be taking interest in Vivek’s love life but then isn’t it high time that she and her boyfriend Saif Ali Khan got married? Is there still an inch of doubt in their minds? When the two stars have already come out in the open to express their love for each other than what’s stopping them from saying the ‘I Do’?

Arjun to play hubby in Stepmom

Arjun Rampal is on a roll.

Rumours say he has been finalised to play Kajol-Kareena Kapoor’s husband in Karan Johar’s version of Step Mom. Sources in the Johar camp say that the choice of Arjun is still not final and that talks between the actor and the producer are still on. Earlier it was being suggested that John Abraham would play the same role.

Of course as is the practice these days, first a news is leaked out; then there is a round of denials. This way more buzz is generated. Anyway, Arjun who is currently riding the success wave post Rock On; is also likely to be the male lead in Meghna Gulzar’s directorial venture being produced by Sanjay Gupta. Gupta says, “I’ll let you know if this news is correct, once the deal goes through. Right now, it is too early to talk.” Arjun is also in talks with two film corporations for leading roles, but the price is still being negotiated.

Shilpa Shetty 'shines' on Vogue cover this month

Shilpa Shetty

"Kabhi kabhi jeetne ke liye kuch haarna bhi padta hai ....aur haarkar jeetne walon ko Baazigar kehte hain"

If you were to guess the name of the cover girl of the latest edition of Vogue, the above line would definitely make sense. Not just for the reason that it's from her debut film but also because it suits her more than to anyone else this season. With her IPL team Rajasthan Royals' not making it to the finals, Shilpa Shetty did face a defeat recently. But, not the one to sob, Shilpa is raring to go and how! She can be seen sizzling while looking her curvaceous best on the cover of the recent edition of Vogue.

If the title 'The Business of being Shilpa Shetty' is anything to go by, then, it's totally needless to say that the story angle is surely tilting to more of Shilpa - the businesswoman as compared to Shilpa - the actress. Validating this is none other than her 'Prince Charming' Raj Kundra, who says "I saw the international appeal Shilpa had and suggested she make a brand of herself. She's taken to business like a fish to water. I call her India's Martha Stewart".

While talking about the change in her life, Shilpa says, "I like the idea of reinventing myself, of moulding and enhancing one's personality...I am not someone you would call a conventional beauty". To read more about Shilpa - the businesswoman, pick up the latest copy of Vogue.

Insider gossip from Karan Johar's party

Karan Johar’s 37th birthday party at Hotel Four Seasons in Mumbai on May 25 is being called the bash of the year.

More A-listers were spotted here than one could keep tabs of, but some details have made there way out of the venue. Obviously, an insider has been doing the talking...

Guest list
Shah Rukh-Gauri, Abhishek-Aishwarya, Hrithik-Sussanne, Saif-Kareena, Karisma, Ranbir-Deepika, Imran-Avantika, Arjun Rampal-Mehr, Shahid Kapur, Rani, Farhan Akhtar, Tusshar, Sonam Kapoor, Vidya Balan, Vivek Oberoi, Lara Dutta, Riteish Deshmukh, Genelia and many more.

Notably missing
Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra, John Abraham and Karan’s good friend Kajol. Some were away from Mumbai, while others were down with flu.

Dress code
Karan asked men to be in formal suits. Most guests obliged, though a few like Hrithik went casual. Most women were in tiny dresses. Like on most occasions, birthday boy Karan wore black.

Highlights
* Karan dragged Abhishek to Shah Rukh and the two ended up chatting for sometime, with Ash looking on. So is it the end of Khan-Bachchan cold war?

* Kareena and Ash were seen chatting and dancing. Pleasant surprise considering after Abhishek and Karisma’s engagement broke, Kareena had put a ban on all things Abhi.

* Riteish and Genelia came separately; Shahid and Vidya were seen leaving together.

* Shahid and Kareena made no effort to chat, while Ash made an effort and avoided Vivek Oberoi.

* Hrithik, Abhishek, Arjun and Farhan climbed on the bar counter and danced.

* The party ended in the wee hours of May 26.

Our regret
It was unfortunate that Karan, while being a gracious host to his colleagues, extended no hospitality to the media which had turned up to cover the event. Angry with the ill treatment, most photographers banned the party and you missed seeing the photos.

Salman not at KJo's party

Salman Khan is his good friend, so when Karan Johar celebrated his 37th birthday at Hotel Four Seasons in Mumbai on May 25, Sallu’s absence was too glaring to go unnoticed.

A couple of other A-listers, such as Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Kajol and John Abraham, were missing too, but then they were either sick or away from Mumbai. But neither was the case with Salman.

In fact, Salman’s brothers Sohail and Arbaaz accompanied by their wives were present at the party but Sallu was no where to be seen.

There are rumours that Katrina was also invited but she could not make it as she had just landed from South Africa.

The real reason for Sallu’s absence is unknown. Was it because of his break up with Katrina (he probably thought she would turn up for the party and did not want any interaction with her) or SRK (because of their on going fight) or did Karan actually not invite Salman?

'Luck' is full of spectacular stunts

Bollywood's celebrity action director Allan Amin, who is set to train passionate bikers to perform stunts on MTV's new adventure reality show, says he made actor Imran Khan jump off a plane onto a moving train in the forthcoming movie "Luck".

"In 'Luck', Imran would be seen jumping from an airplane onto a moving train. It was a brave scene and was shot in Bangkok," Amin told IANS over telephone from Mumbai.

Imran, who won many hearts with his debut "Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Ya", said it was an important scene, but refused to divulge any details about it.

"It is a major scene in the film and we will most probably use it for the promotion of the film. It will be a major part of the film's publicity campaign so I don't want to reveal much about the scene," said Imran.

The scene might bear resemblance to Anil Kapoor's famous jump in the 1993 movie "Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja" as well as Hrithik Roshan's anti-gravity stunt in "Dhoom 2" (2006).

Apart from this particular act in "Luck", the action director has also choreographed an underwater action scene set in South Africa with Imran and his leading lady Shruti Haasan - the two will be seen swimming with sharks.

Sanjay Dutt, who is also a part of the Soham Shah-directed project, will be seen in a spectacular stunt in which he is supposed to run towards fast moving trains - something we saw Aamir Khan doing in "Ghulam".

Amin has been in the film industry for the last 25 years and says more actors now prefer to do their own stunts instead of asking for a body double.

"A lot of actors today want to do their stunts for the excitement. Not only the younger lot, even experienced actors like Amitabh Bachchan likes to do stunts on their own. I made Amitabh do one in 'Aks' when he had to jump through a waterfall," said Amin, who has directed stunts in actioners like "Dhoom", "Dus", "Kaal" and "Main Hoon Na".

In 2005, he got the Filmfare Award for directing action sequences in "Mission Kashmir", which had Sanjay Dutt and Hrithik in lead roles.

Amin is now excited about being a judge on reality show "Pulsar MTV Stunt Mania", where he has to select, train and judge 10 passionate bikers to perform stunts like a basic wheelie, stoppie, flamingo, et al.

"The channel approached me for the show and after being in the industry for so long, I thought this would be something new for me and something very close to my heart - so I agreed. I will be more than happy to teach young kids how to do stunts properly without harming themselves in any way," he said.

"A lot of youngsters have a passion for bikes and related stunts, but they should first be brave and positive to be able to carry off a stunt well. And then it is my job to make the stunt spectacular and safe," he added.

On the show starting July 26, the rider with the least marks will get eliminated every week and the remaining will go on to compete for the 'Stunt God' title and a chance to feature in a commercial for Bajaj Pulsar.

Danny Boyle to Slumdog... kids' rescue

Director Danny Boyle has jetted to India to help find a home for the displaced child stars of his Oscar-winning movie “Slumdog Millionaire”.

The director met with several of the film's stars at the private lounge of Mumbai's JW Marriott hotel on Tuesday (May 26) as part of his ongoing efforts to provide financial aid for the young actors.

Boyle established the Jai Ho Trust last year to ensure nine-year-old Rubina Ali and her co-star Azhar Ismail, 10, would receive financial backing to ensure their educations after plucking them from impoverished obscurity to star in his film.

But the children don't appear to be receiving any monetary aid - Ali was left facing life on the streets after authorities demolished her shantytown shack earlier this month, days after her co-star Azhar Ismail suffered the same ordeal.

Katrina Kaif's bonding with Salman's foe, John Abraham

When they shot for New York, Katrina Kaif and John Abraham kept their distance from each other because of her beau Salman Khan's dushmani with her co-star. But when the recently-separated-from-Sallu Kat shot with Johnny Boy for a music video a few weeks back, the pair bonded.

B-Town is abuzz with rumours of this new dosti between Sallu's ex and his foe.

Sceptics might question the timing of these rumours as the film is ready for release and pass it off as nothing more than a publicity gimmick. But Salman Khan's camp insists that the actor has proof that his arch enemy and his ex are in touch with each other. Khan is known to keep tabs on his ex-girlfriends.

And he is doing the same with Kat. Reveals a source close to the actor, "Salmanbhai got hold of Kat's mobile bill and saw many calls and SMSes made and received between John and her." One explanation could be that the pair is in touch as the film is ready for release but you can't argue with a jealous boyfriend (ex or otherwise).

Salman is said to be furious at Kat's alliance with the man he considers an enemy. Katrina is now running scared. Even though she is no longer with him, she needs Sallu professionally. Although she has been telling people that she is no longer his girlfriend, she cannot afford to rub him the wrong way and expect to survive in the film industry.

The source continues, "Everyone in the industry is talking about this changed equation between Kat and John. There will surely be repercussions to this new development." Salman is known to be territorial about his gals, years after they've gone of his life. So the big question is: What happens next?

While Katrina and John remained unavailable for comment, a friend of Abraham rubbishes these rumours, "There is nothing going on between him and Katrina. He is just being targeted by someone. The truth will come out soon."

Luckily, for Ranbir... his word was enough
It is believed that when the rumours of Katrina and Ranbir first appeared, Salman called up the Saawariya boy and asked him if he and Kat had something going on. Kapoor assured him that he was serious about Deepika and that he wouldn't dream of cosying up to Salman's girl. Luckily for him, Khan chose to believe him.

Mugdha Godse is on the lookout for a new car

Tied up with her film shoots, Mugdha Godse has had no time to look around and decide on a new pair of wheels. The Fashion actress had met with an accident on the Mumbai-Pune expressway on May 5 that left her car in a mess.

As Mugdha is on a tight schedule shooting for a long schedule of Rohit Shetty's All The Best (in Goa) and Madhur Bhandarkar's Jail (in Mumbai), she spends time between shots leafing through auto magazines. This apart, several of her close pals are advising her on the best deals.

Mugdha was in Mumbai for the last couple of days, shooting for Jail. To make the most of it, she made a list of potential buys and called up the selected car company folk to arrive at her various shoot locations for test drives!

She says, "There is no way out. I am helpless without a car and have to be dependent on friends and unit cars to take me around. Every day, a different vehicle would arrive on the sets and unit folk would wonder what I was up to!"

As the model-turned-actress is superstitious, she does not want to repair her damaged car. "I have been told that it will take at least two to three months to get it done. I'd rather scrap it. Once a car has received a jolt, then some problem or the other keeps on happening to it. Moreover, it had also caused me a neck injury. So I would rather scrap it."

Mugdha admits that she was not so clued in to cars. "I have already checked out seven models and will soon be making up my mind on what to settle for; it's mostly a SUV. I keep on buying auto mags to check out what the latest and the best buys are. In the last few weeks, I have been clued in about the vehicles and also their technical stuff. I have become a self-learnt car enthusiast now!"

Salman-Kat: How it ended

Salman is over and done with yet another relationship. After his long affair with Ash, a second supposedly serious relationship has come to an end. Here's how it happened…

Twenty-four-year-old Katrina ended her relationship with the mercurial Salman Khan, 44 this year, over an SMS, a friend of the actress said. “She was shooting in Oooty with Ranbir when this happened. She didn't want to wait till she got back home. So she texted him that it was over from her side, but they could still remain friends," the friend said, "Salman was furious and decided to land up on the film's set."

This was the prospect that terrified Katrina, who was afraid to confront Salman in person. Fortunately for her, the star never showed up. "His family and very close friends advised him against this," the friend said. Salman had once landed up on Shah Rukh Khan's set for Chalte Chalte and thrown a massive tantrum once when Aishwarya Rai had gone cold on him.

So troubled had been the film's crew with the episode that Ash had to be asked to leave the movie and Rani Mukherji was taken instead. Before this, Salman had broken down Aishwarya's door one night and her father had run to the media asking for help. Now Katrina fears it’s her turn.

Kat now fears that Salman will make her life miserable too. "Kat is in a position that she can't afford to lose. She's commanding a huge fee and has some big films under her name. Now that the story is out in the open, she is running scared that Salman will make life tough for her as well," adds the friend.

Those close to Salman say he has matured. A family member said that Katrina had nothing to worry about from the star and that he wished her well and would not speak about her in public. “That's his business,” the source said, when asked if the relationship had ended. For the last two months there has been a buzz in B-town that Bollywood's lovebirds are no longer resting in the same nest.

However, confirmation about their split was only given to close friends and family. From Salman's side, his sister Arpita and Alvira knew that their relationship was over, while Kat had confessed in her Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani costar Ranbir Kapoor that she was done with Sallu. Katrina's friend says she was never involved with Ranbir. He was just someone she could talk to, she said. "There is no shock value to this breakup. It was destined to happen. Katrina was getting more and more frustrated with Salman. Katrina has been telling close friends how she can't relate to Salman anymore. Not only is the age difference vast, but she's also fed up of him," revealed Katrina’s friend.

Tamasha and Hungama at Karan's Birthday Bash

If the film industry were the United Nations, Karan Johar would be the Secretary-General. A self-confessed people person who loves nothing better than to bring warring factors together and to get everyone to kiss and make up, he has become, at the young age of 37, a sort of father figure to the entire acting fraternity. (Much like his father Yash Johar was, to the previous generation.)

Not surprising then that at his birthday party on Monday night (Tuesday morning actually, considering it wound up only at 4.30am), lots of drama happened. Given that one-half of the industry studiously avoids the second half because of real and perceived grievances while many sit in the lap of most, the party was not without its dramatic and memorable ones.Saif Ali Khan was dressed the most nattily in waistcoat and muffler. Hrithik Roshan came in casuals.

Among the directors who attended were Farhan Akhtar, Nikhil Advani, Rensil D'Silva and Kunal Kohli. Shah Rukh Khan was formally dressed, while youngsters Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan wore jackets.

Though Salman Khan didn't attend, his brothers did. Karisma Kapoor accompanied Saif and Kareena.

Aamir Khan sent a bouquet. Not surprisingly, the sushi was a big hit. After all, these are some of the fittest people in this country.

Aishwarya Rai married into the Bachchan-Kapoor feud that started when the Abhishek Bachchan-Karisma Kapoor engagement was called off, giving wing to many a nasty rumour fuelled by the fact that Abhishek and Kareena didn't work together again. But with Kareena wishing wistfully that Abhishek would find some room in his heart for her and Aishwarya wishing to let bygones be bygones, it was wonderful to see the two lovely ladies catch up at the party and then spend the night dancing away.

Abhishek, meanwhile, was whisked away to the corner by Karan, where Shah Rukh was seated, thus also ending the Bachchan-SRK cold war.

While all the bonhomie (above) was happening, Vidya Balan and Shahid Kapur were reconnecting. Though they came separately, they left together.

Some people went to great lengths(literally) to avoid former friends. When Vivek Oberoi arrived, Aishwarya moved to another corner.

On the other hand, when Shahid arrived, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena were cool.

Shah Rukh unhappy with My Name is Khan

We are told SRK was in the US trying to beat the blues of his IPL team’s dismal showing. He was on a holiday with his wife and kids and keeping away from everything related to Bollywood and cricket. Now that’s the official word.

But that’s not actually the case and SRK away from movies is like a fish without water. We have it from confirmed sources that while in the US, Shah Rukh was re-shooting some portions of Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan, which haven’t worked out according to the director’s vision. We had told you earlier how Karan was hoping to re-shoot the scenes on a set in Mumbai with Kajol and SRK, but she flatly refused to give him extra dates for the film. The whole idea of shooting in Mumbai was to accommodate Kajol, but since she wasn’t going to be a part of it, it didn’t make any sense.

So the schedule was planned with SRK when he was there on his holiday. We are told SRK is also not particularly happy with the rumblings from the US unit from the previous schedule and has asked Karan to look into the matters himself, because it’s never happened with his films before. And he also didn’t want to have a bad reputation in New York, which according to him is like his second home.

Mallika's Twitter-mad in LA

Mallika Sherawat's in Los Angeles to finish her work on the serpent movie Hissss, and she's become an incorrigible Twit. No, Twitter. Sorry, make that Tweeter.

That's the name used for those who post SMS-sized messages on the twitter.com site. Mallika's feed is called twitter.com/mallikaLA. The last two initials indicate where she is and so she might as well stop after returning next month.

For now, however, she's blasting away the messages sending them from her computer and from her mobile phone.

What's she been talking about? The fact that Ram Gopal Varma called her the Marilyn Monroe of the East (er, didn't Marilyn have big hits to her name?) and that Farah Khan gave her a statue of the Buddha.

There are plenty of updates of her yoga routine. Alas, Mallika omits to put in too much physical detail. Mallika describes herself as a Vegan, which means someone who is not just vegetarian but also does not have milk or milk products.

The actress went on Salman's Dus Ka Dum over the weekend and says he asked her why she was single. Her reply? "Hmmmm, good question!". Right.

And who's Mallika following in turn? Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey and David Lynch. Lynch is the Hollywood director of such movies as Mulholland Drive. His daughter Jennifer is the director of Hissss, the movie on whose coattails Mallika hopes to become an international star like Frieda Pinto with the world's press following her antics.

For the moment, however, there are only 578 people interested in Mallika's twitter feed.

If you're not among them, here's what the actress has been messaging in the last 48 hours.

Its Raining Love! - Kangana Ranaut

Its Raining Love! - Kangana RanautIt’s ‘meet the parents’ time for Shekhar Suman’s son Adhyayan, as he will be travelling to Dehradun to meet girlfriend Kangana Ranaut’s family.

Kangana, after finishing her schedule for her Telugu film in Hyderabad, left for her parents’ home as she does every summer and is expected to travel with her folks to a nearby hill station. Adhyayan was to follow her, but his father insisted he join him on his campaign trail in Patna.

Not sure if senior Suman really believed that Adhyayan would actually be recognised and pull in the crowds. No wonder he lost to BJP stalwart Shatrughan Sinha. Maybe the older Suman was just trying to keep his son away from taking his relationship to the next level by meeting Kangana’s parents. But that was inevitable, since Kangana was adamant that Adhyaman come and visit her family.

So, as soon as the election results were out and he was done with giving his father the moral support he needed on losing, Adhyayan took the first flight to be with Kangana’s family. He is expected to spend a week with them, and Kangana is grinning from ear to ear. She hopes he does a lot better with her family than she did with his.

Ash gets grace marks with Sonam

After the Cannes’ red carpet fiasco, Sonam Kapoor who is a die-hard Aishwarya Bachchan fan (as per her own confession) walked up to the latter at Karan Johar’s birthday party on May 25 and extended an olive branch.

Sonam was excited about walking down the red carpet with Ash during the Cannes Film Festival, however, that didn’t happen.

Sonam and Ash represent the same beauty brand and chances are that these actresses might have to walk the red carpet at some event in the future. So the young Sonam wanted all to be well between her and Ash. “Aishwarya was a picture of grace,” said a source at the party. “Earlier she hugged and made up with Kareena Kapoor, and then when Sonam walked up to her, she didn’t hesitate to warm up to the young girl either.” Must give full marks to Ash; beauty and grace is a lethal combination.

Aamir backs Teach India!

This sounds too good to be true.

You’ve heard of final year IIT and IIM students being offered huge pay packets by multi-nationals in on-campus interviews for their services later on, right? And probably sat and burned with envy at the thought of GenNext’s starting annual emoluments being in mind-boggling figures. But here’s a turn for the book. Fresh graduates from India’s premier technology and management institutes have pledged to keep their private careers on hold for two years and, instead, dedicate their time and knowledge to teaching less privileged students in government schools across the country.

The students, who have already been snapped up for big posts and fat salaries by corporate giants, have apparently asked their future employers for time in which they might fulfil this mission. There’s more.
Bollywood’s Aamir Khan, who played a dedicated teacher in his home production Taare Zameen Par, is all in favour of this sacrifice being made by the students and wants to encourage them all the way.

The initiative, started by an NGO on the lines of The Times of India’s Teach India campaign last year, has Aamir saying excitedly, “It’s a beautiful concept and I believe it has the potential to make a very positive change and difference to our society. With the cream of our youth dedicating two years of their lives to educating our children, they are indicating a tremendous social commitment which deserves the highest praise, support and acknowledgement.”

Aamir, who started to feel strongly about the impact of education on youth after closely working himself with The Times Of India’s Lead India movement, added, “Not only will it contribute greatly to the education of many of our underprivileged children, but it will also help shape these highly-motivated youths into extremely sensitive and enriched citizens of our great culture.”

Claudia, who?: Abhi

A rare sight this: Abhishek Bachchan in a goofy mood, laughing, joking and generally taking everyone for a trip.

In town for the anniversary of a luxury product at the Emporio mall, the dude answered every single question, and not one ‘no comments’. Someone wanted his autograph, and thrust a scrap of paper into his hands. “For my daughter, please, she’s crazy about you,” said the lady. “I appreciate, but I’d still need a pen,” said Abhi, with a very straight face, while the lady blushed. Tell us about the French connection in Pa, one journo wanted to know. “French connection? The film is being directed by Balki, and I must say, so far he’s an Indian. So, no French connection, ma’am,” shot back Abhi.

But perhaps no one realised, even then, that Abhishek Bachchan was in a decidedly un-Bachchan mood. Someone asked him to ask a question to Lata Mangeshkar, for some TV programme. “Are you crazy? What would I ask her?” he asked. “Can’t ask her age, that would be improper, wouldn’t it?” he added, his eyes glinting with mischief.

Seemed like no one could quite handle the usually monosyllabic, sulking AB Jr in this mood. Poochhna tha if he’s playing AB Sr’s father in Pa and ended up asking, ‘Are you playing your father’s son in Pa?’ Abhi pounced on the mistake. “Playing my father’s son? I am my father’s son. Would you believe it?” he asked loudly to nobody in particular. “I am my father’s son.” That quite ended the Q&A session, and Abhi then mingled about.
Conversation veered towards his films, his losing and putting on weight, working with Aishwarya, and doing photoshoots with sis Shweta Nanda... “Aishwarya is my wife, and Shweta my elder sister first and foremost. Nothing is going to change that. They both pamper me silly. And as for putting on and losing weight, it’s a very tough task. It might sound fun, but it’s not. It is very demanding on the body.”

And the Cannes veteran that he is now, has he quite mastered the art of walking the Red Carpet? “We go there for work. Yes, it is seen as being very glamorous and prestigious, but at the end of the day, it is work for us. The Cannes festival is one of the biggest movie markets in the world. We go there to sell our films, it is a fantastic platform. The whole world comes there to buy and sell films,” says Abhi. And what about the tiny spark of controversy? “What controversy?” he asks, fidgeting with his ring a bit – which, by the way, is a habit of Abhi’s. He keeps playing with his ring every now and then. Oh, those reports of him ‘chatting and discussing’ with and enjoying the company of German supermodel and Playboy playmate Claudia Ciesla at the Indian Pavilion at Cannes? “If all this helps her, it’s great. Best of luck to her,” says Abhi, and adds firmly, “But I don’t know the lady. Never met her.”

No Mads, Ranbir romance!

Had it been true, it would have been a kind of casting coup Bollywood hasn’t seen in a while.

In the past week or so, reports of Ranbir Kapoor and his childhood heart-throb Madhuri Dixit Nene being approached for Prakash Jha’s next, Draupadi, have been been doing the rounds.

The reports have even reached Madhuri, who’s presently in the US. She called her manager Riku in Mumbai, who, in turn, called Prakash to clarify the reports. The director has been flooded with many such calls ever since. “It’s absurd. Logon ka kuch kaam nahin, toh they start cooking up these stories. Everyone’s talking about it. But I have no idea who spread these rumours,” says Prakash, adding, “Ranbir must be running for cover.”

The film was rumoured to be a May-December love story, with Ranbir playing a young man besotted with a much older Madhuri. Reports also suggested that the script, which was sent to Mads in the US, challenged her and she was excited about it. Is Prakash planning any such project in the future? “No. I take up one project at a time, aur ek project ko banane mein paanch saal lag jaate hain. Currently, I’m trying to wrap up Rajneeti,” he says.

Hrithik, Barbara can give you Goosebumps!

The newest hot pair of the town Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori has been painting the town red and charming all with their aura. And the latest to get all awed by their presence was a ‘bechaara’ Bartender at the recently held bash at Vijay Mallya’s villa Le Grand Jardin on Sainte-Marguerite. Mallya invited 300 guests, which included Bollywood stars, political dignitaries from the Indian and French Government.

To add the fun element to his party, Mallya called his bartender who has a unique specialty of opening a Champagne bottle using a ‘Talwar’ (sword). Interestingly, the guy who’s an expert in this art got nervous and couldn’t perform properly in front of the ‘Kites’ couple Hrithik and Barbara who were excited to see his art.

“The bartender was completely disheartened as he couldn’t perform in front of Hrithik and Barbara but the actor told that Bartender to take his own time and also made him feel comfortable. Interestingly after a few minutes, the same Bartender returned and opened a champagne bottle with the sword,” said a source.

It seems Hrithik knows the art of making others comfortable quite well.

"Deepika is gorgeous and is more beautiful than Angelina Jolie" - Rob Cohen

International Hollywood director Rob Cohen thinks that the graceful, classic and radiant Bollywood actress, Deepika Padukone, is the new face of Indian cinema being touted as the next big thing as per the overseas audiences feedback. The Indian super model turned actress has carved a niche for herself not only within Indian cinema, but is also creating a sensation internationally. According to Rob Cohen, whose credit includes The Witches of Eastwick and The Fast and the Furious, "Deepika Padukone is gorgeous and is more beautiful than Angelina Jolie."

The director has also indicated his interest in casting Deepika for his next film project in Hollywood. Talks are on with both the parties but none of them are ready to comment on the same till the deal gets locked in. Now if that's the case, then Deepika Padukone will be India's newest and the quickest entrant in Hollywood. Deepika's striking beauty and cover model appeal have made her the favourite cover girl for fashion magazines like Vogue, Elle, Cosmopolitan, L'Officiel, and Marie Claire. Maxim Magazine recently voted her "The Hottest Girl on Earth" not just for her huge fan following but also because of her appeal as an international brand face.

Rob Cohen adds, "Deepika's diverse and versatile body of work continues to truly make her one of the youngest, most gorgeous and most talented super model and actresses to have taken both the cinema and fashion industry by storm. Her versatility as a model and inimitable style have made her a popular celebrity ambassador for international brands such as Tissot, Maybelline, Pepsi, Levi's, Wrigley's and Fiama Di Wills to name a few."

And as far as our comments are concerned, all we can say is that Deepika, you sure are too fast and furious.

Shilpa's no show makes Katz's party!

The upset at the IPL finale on Sunday at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg was not just restricted to the playing area where Adam Gilchrist’s team beat Anil Kumble’s.

It also spilled over onto the “spectacular” closing ceremony (as was broadcast from South Africa) which viewers in India felt was terribly mismanaged and lacked punch.

The story goes that Shilpa Shetty, who sportingly stayed on for the final even after her own team was knocked out, was slated to dance with American R&B artiste and hearthrob Akon. The Bollywood beauty even said as much on her blog. But, after the winning run had been scored and the celebrations began, what did we see but Katrina Kaif in an awkward shuffle with the singer.
According to Shilpa, she didn’t get time to rehearse for the performance. But then, neither did Katrina. The feisty and in-demand Katz was supposed to make a quick exit after going on stage with Akon and blowing kisses to the crowds. Instead, she stayed on for a forgettable ten minutes struggling to hip-hop with the singer.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen!” said the actress the morning after the event. “I was to dance to Jai Ho with Shiamak Davar. That’s it.” But minutes before she could go on stage, Katz was informed she had to dance with Akon. “I was like... zapped! Not only because I was not prepared for it, but also because I’m Akon’s biggest fan. Just sharing the stage with him would have been a dream come true. And there I was dancing with him. It was an exhilarating experience.”

‘Dancing’ is a word people who watched the two on stage, would not care to use to describe their crazy gesticulations. But, really, Katz and Akon met seconds before the curtain went up on them. “As we ran out he asked me what we’ll do for the audience. I was numb and clueless. So we just improvised and did what we wanted to,” Katz admitted.

Tabu patches up with Madhur Bhandarkar

After creating magic with the film “Chandni Bar”, which won many National Awards, Tabu and director Madhur Bhandarkar had a fallout.

Their differences were over sharing of the film’s credit.

After this fight, Tabu had decided that she will never work in any of Madhur’s films. This was obvious when she was not a part of any of his subsequent movies.

Even though they did not let their fight come out in the open there was unspoken bitterness between them.

But now Madhur’s wife Renu seemed to have successfully resolved the issue resulting in Tabu agreeing to work with Madhur in his under production movie, “Jail”.

It so happened that Tabu and Renu recently met at a shopping mall. Renu did not leave Tabu alone and accompanied her for her entire shopping trip. After that she invited Tabu home for a cup of coffee. If that wasn’t enough, Renu managed to convince her to stay for dinner too.

Tabu was touched by Renu’s persistence and hospitality. That’s when Madhur took his chance and convinced Tabu to be part of “Jail”.

Tabu readily agreed to do so and Madhur couldn’t stop thanking his wife for this.

Will there be only veg food at IIFA awards

Animal welfare organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has urged members of the India International Film Academy (IIFA) and its brand ambassador, Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan, to avoid non-vegetarian meals at the forthcoming event to be held in Macau, China next month.

On behalf of PETA, its chief functionary Anuradha Sawhney sent a letter in this regard to Sabbas Joseph, one of the directors of Wizcraft that organises IIFA, and its vegetarian celebrity face Amitabh after learning that the event will have a 'Go-Green' theme, said a press release.

"We were thrilled to hear that this year's IIFA Awards are going to have a 'Go Green' theme, and we commend you for helping to once again draw attention to the global climate crisis. On behalf of PETA India and all our members and supporters, we respectfully ask you to serve only green (vegetarian) food at the event.

"By doing so, you will send a strong message that people can save the planet simply by changing their dietary habits," Sawhney stated in the letter sent on Tuesday (May 26) morning.

IIFA, in its 10th edition this year, will be held from June 11-13 at The Venetian Macau-Resort. It will also present a special 'Green IIFA' award to a film personality who has been working in the area of creating environment awareness.

"J" is what Hrithik's character in Kites is called

Hrithik Roshan is going grey for Kites. We are talking about his dark character, not the colour of his hair. In an interview to a trade magazine in Cannes, the actor said about his character, "Five years ago as a Bollywood star you had to be a super hero, the best fighter, dancer and lover, and all of this was attributed to your personal image. Now this is being looked at as being untrue. Now you can be a human being and it is accepted that there are grey areas in human personality."

Roshan Jr plays a character called J (yup, just the initial) who is a streetsmart, carefree young guy but who is now on the wanted list. In the harshy terrains of the Mexican desert, he is left to die in the heat of the desert sun. The only thing that keeps him alive is the quest to find the love of his life Natasha (Barbara Mori). She is a woman engaged to another man, but destined for J. She is described as a woman who comes into his life like a bolt of lightning and changes it forever.

Hrithik had admitted during media interactions at the Cannes film festival that Kites which is in English, Hindi and Spanish isn't the typical B-Town film's leading man part. He attributes the change of mindset to the influence of filmmaking from the west. Both the actor and the director Anurag Basu admitted to struggling with getting the film right for an Indian as well as an international audience.

Hrithik also admitted that the fact that Slumdog Millionaire being a success internationally and not in India worried them and had the industry thinking hard about bridging the gap "It shows that it is still a journey for us to learn how to satisfy both an Indian and global audience."

Hrithik also confessed that he was stumped about how to play the role," I did try and go on that journey of acting with an western audience in mind but ultimately I had to throw that out and give an honest performance. I am very loyal to my country and culture and prefer to present the best of that to the world."

Vashu Bhagnani obeys Aamir's orders; postponess son's debut release

Once, Aamir Khan takes up a cause, he sees it through. Last week, the actor called producer Vashu Bhagnani and talked him out of his plans of defying the strike against the multiplexes so he could release his son Jackky Bhagnani's debut film Kal Kissne Dekha.

According to eyewitnesses, Vashu, who has been going all out to market and promote his son's debut film for a May 29 release, got a call in the middle of a show in Ahmedabad on Thursday night.

Vashu was seen having a long, earnest conversation while Kareena performed. Apparently, that conversation changed the entire course of Vashu's plans.

Vashu, who was adamant about releasing his son's film on May 29, now says, "I will never go against the wishes of the film fraternity. My son's release is important. But the film industry is far more important." Vashu admits he changed his mind after a long conversation with Aamir.

"He called and enquired if he had heard correctly about my son's film's release on May 29. Yes, he was a little concerned. I can't reveal all the details of our conversation. But yes, I told him if he wants, I'll postpone the film."

This, after pouring so much time, effort, energy and money into the debutant's marketing?

"Why not? We've planned events all over the country. Those, I see as promotions for my son. Not for his film. And even if I lose a lot of money in publicity, I'll postpone the May 29 release if Aamir and the rest of the producers' forum decides to."

Farah Khan opted out of a CPAA event

Ahead of the World No Tobacco Day on May 31, the Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA) invited Farah Khan as guest of honour at an event on Saturday at a Bandra hotel. The choreographer-director, however, did not turn up on the said day.

B-Town buzz is that when Farah realised that the event was to be attended by B-Town folks like Sohail Khan, Bappi Lahiri, Aftab Shivdasani, Milind Soman, Anuj Saxena, Neetu Chandra, Raima Sen, Arjan Bajwa among others, she gave it a skip.

Says a source, "At the event, everyone was wondering why Farah was missing as the invite had her name as the chief guest. Later, it was realised that she had preferred to stay away when she heard that she'd be sharing the stage with several other celebrities."

Farah maintains, "I was approached by the CPAA to be the chief guest. I was told that I would be distributing gifts to the cancer-affected. In fact, I have been associated with several of their events in the past.

But two days prior to the event, I was told that it was to be a press conference to announce a celeb cricket match. As I would definitely not be playing cricket, I told them to excuse me. I told them that I could be part of some other event. Moreover, I have been very busy shooting for my TV show, Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega."

About the buzz surrounding her no- show she says, "Why would I not go? Last year, I attended a CPAA event with Vivek Oberoi. In fact, Sohail Khan's wife Seema is a dear friend. In fact, I went out of my way to do choreography for his film, Main Aur Mrs Khanna. Aftab and Sohail are guests at my Eid parties. As the CPAA wanted to announce a cricket match, and there was no way I could fit in, I told them to count me out for the event."

According to Anita Peter, director, Cancer Patients Aid Association, "We had approached Farah as she has always been extremely supportive of our causes. I had invited her as chief guest. But as there were several celebs coming, she told me that if you really need me I will come. And as she was busy with her other commitments, we told her it was okay."

Ranbir Kapoor will do double role in Mera Jahaan and sport various look

The double role fever seems to be spreading faster than the swine flu. It started last year with Deepika Padukone's Chandni Chowk To China. Akshay Kumar featured in a Cola ad in a twin avatar.

Shahid Kapoor will be seen playing two different characters in the upcoming Kaminey and now Ranbir Kapoor is jumping on the bandwagon by starring in Vikramjit Singh's Mera Jahaan in a double role.

Deepika Padukone has been finalised to play the lead actress opposite Ranbir in the film, which is being produced under Sameer Rattonsey's banner Cinema Paradiso.

Sameer admits, "Ranbir plays a double role and it's interesting because he has various looks in the film from a young guy to an old man, so there's a full range of acting for him to go through. It's not typical masala fare. We want to make films we like and would be proud to be associated with."

Director Vikramjit Singh, who has written the story and screenplay, elaborates on Ranbir's role. "Ranbir plays two different characters from two different time periods one character is based in the 1950s in India and abroad while the other is from 2009 and is based in India.

The story is that of a comic book writer who is lost in his world and his own perceptions of the world. That's why it's called Mera Jahaan or My World."

Sonam not interested
This was the same film they'd approached Sonam Kapoor for the role opposite Ranbir's. But now, only Deepika features in the film. The director reveals, "We had approached Sonam a long time ago and even before the script narration she told us that she was not interested in a two-heroine film."

Vikramjit was earlier supposed to direct Raaste produced by Popcorn and starring Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham, Aishwarya Rai and Sikander Kher. Vikramjit says, "Raaste is not happening as there were certain issues we couldn't resolve. I wrote a completely different script went to Ranbir, he liked the script and said yes."

Rani turns to Shani for help

Actress has been having Shani puja at her Juhu bunglow every Saturday after trouble in her personal and professional life.

All's not well with Rani Mukherjee. Apart from giving a string of flops, the actress also has been going through a rough patch on the personal front. Her father has been unwell and this has been a cause of stress for Rani. Sources reveal that her relationship with Aditya Chopra, which neither has acknowledged, is strained. This strain has manifested itself both in their personal lives and their professional lives. For the last few years Rani has been focussing on Yash Raj movies, but this hasn't paid off for her with Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic, Tara Rum Pum and Laaga Chunri Mein Daag failing.

While it was rumoured that she had a lot of creative say in what went into the movies, a source at YRF scoffed at this. "Rani does not have and never had control over any creative decisions at Yash Raj," he said.

With trouble on many fronts, Rani is turning to religion and is hoping to bring about a positive change. Rani has consulted her personal astrologer and started holding pujas for the Shani diety. A source reveals, "Rani is a huge Sai Baba devotee. In fact, she has a huge marble statue of the saint in her Juhu pad. Now, apart from worshipping Sai Baba, Rani has also started the Shani puja every Saturday. As per her astrologer, Rani is going through a bad phase, which will only end when she completes a certain number of Shani pujas. It is known that people worship Shani to ward off evil and try and change bad luck into good."

The actress has started doing the puja since the last three weeks. "Even if Rani is not in town, her pujari comes and does the puja on Saturday at her residence. Even though she's never been superstitious, Rani is highly religious," the source said.

Rani was under criticism for putting on extra weight, however the actress recently lost oodles of weight. Rani wants to make a comeback, and is trying to do everything possible that can bring success back to her.

Lara worked up over Blue promos

Despite bikini, actress has less footage in promos than special-appearance Katrina.

Lara Dutta is blue. And this time, it isn't her boyfriend Dino Morea who's causing her worries. Lara is miffed with the producers of Blue after seeing the rough cut of the first teaser for the film. The promo, incidentally, has more of Katrina Kaif then Lara Dutta.

This should be fine in the normal course of things, given that Kats is clearly a much bigger star than Lara. But Katrina only has a special appearance in the Akshay Kumar-Sanjay Dutt starrer. And Lara has been billed as its heroine, or at least that's what Lara was given to believe.

So, when she watched the promo, she was fuming. How could the producers focus more on someone who had done a cameo than on the person who was the star of the movie?

A source on the film said part of the reason for this was that Katrina was in a different league. "The fact is that Katrina is definitely hotter than Lara in the market."

But he added that there was another reason for a little less of Lara in the promo. And that was that there is a lot of Lara to be seen in the movie. And we're not talking about the length of her role! "She's looking hot in the bikini, and we don't want to give it out in the promo itself," said the source. And not having too many other chick scenes in the movie led to overuse of Katrina.

"Lara is feeling sidelined because now she not only has to compete with Katrina, but also Australian pop sensation Kylie Minogue," he added. He said that the Katrina 'special appearance' bit was also turning out to be a little more than that. "Initially Katrina's role was supposed to be very limited, but during the making of the film, the length of her role increased," he said.

Another factor that's troubling Lara is the fact that Akshay Kumar and Katrina share a fantastic equation. "Since Sanjay Dutt has hardly taken any interest in the film, the producers consider Akshay's opinion in every aspect. It was Akshay's idea that they use Kat in the first teaser."

Now, it's to be seen whether the production house gives in to Lara's demand and chops Kat from the promo, or retains it.

What's happening in Bollywood Town!

Shilpa Shetty sizzles on the cover of Vogue, celebs play cricket for charity, and some pretty girls around town.

Cover Girl: French actress Kalki Koechlin who wowed us with Dev D has landed her first magazine cover in the form on MW. We love the doll-like leggy beauty's Scottish checks trousers and jacket look. It's smart and sexy.

Hot and Sizzling: The bootylicious Miss Shetty shows off her curves with aplomb on the latest issue of Vogue. This is her first cover for the magazine.

Showing Off: Looks like Raima Sen is going the Riya Sen way and showing off some skin. At the CPAA, she was all covered but here she prefers to show off some cleavage. This isn’t bad (her shirt is a tad tight and make up a tad overdone) but we like her natural, traditional avatar better. Every actress wants to look sexy, but she should stand out from the rest.

Doll: Minishha Lamba looks like an adorable doll in the very yellow skirt and frilly white shirt that shows off her womanly frame. We like the girly look.

Doing Casual: With her bangs and dimples, Gul looks adorable too, and the scarf brightens up the dress, but we wish her sandals weren’t so boring

United: Aftab, Sohail, Aamir Ali, Chetan Hansraj and Cyrus Broacha were the men in blue who played a charitable match opposite a team of doctors to raise money for the Cancer Patients' Aid Association

Men in White: Funny men Javed Jaafrey and Govinda were the guests at the event

Revealed: Actress Ragini, of Radha ki Betiyaan fame, plays Bharti in the new serial, Bhaskar Bharti

Karan celebrates birthday with friends

“I like to live out my dreams"

How are you bringing in your birthday?

I am having a get-together where I have invited people I respect.

How has the year been for you?

I have covered a lot of work. Now I am 37, but it’s just a number. I might give up the hair dye. Maybe when I am 40 I will go officially grey.

Thirty seven and growing older. How does it feel?

Growing old is a fear I am facing now. I admit I worry all the time about being alone when I am old. But you can’t fight your destiny. If I am destined to be alone, so be it. As I’m getting older, I enjoy being alone in my space.

Isn’t that a scary space to be in?

I like being the master of my days and nights. Maybe I am getting too used to being alone, so much so that I may not enjoy having someone in my life. I am answerable and accountable only to my mother. She understands my passions and weaknesses. The same situation with someone else seems like a distant and strange option. A couple of years ago I was looking for a relationship and commitment. I'm no longer sure I’m ready to do that. Life is no longer a poem, a novel or a book. I realise life is very different.

It’s been a stressful year?

Stress is good. I am happy with the stress. It’s a healthy kind of stress. And I'm happy that our production house has undertaken so much work. Dharma Productions has never been so active.

Does it take your personal life away?

No. It’s a choice. Thinking about my personal life would make me very depressed. Better to move away from it. Work is therapeutic. It’s a healthy distraction.

Does that mean your personal life is unhappy?

It’s empty. Better that way than to fill it up unnecessarily. I have realised emptiness is better than unwanted clutter. I have lots of close friends but I have no personal life.

Do you surround yourself with hyperactivity to fight off loneliness?

It’s a conscious decision to surround myself with people who are doing quality work. I feel the people in my workplace are a family beyond an immediate family. I feel the need to constantly nurture that family. It fills in all the empty spaces in my life without any expectations from me. Isn't that a great equation?

But that’s like being exploited.

I’ve been subjected to that treatment in the past. You can never run away from the risk of being used. I’ve mastered the art of no-expectation from people around me. I am attached to and yet detached from people around me. It’s a brilliant balance to achieve.

Why do you have so many untried directors in your company?

They are the hungriest, and they come with no baggage.

But hunger to achieve is a measure of talent?

It is. The hunger within them makes them tap the talent that they have. And, these aren't youngsters from the blue. They have a certain cinematic background besides a hunger to excel. At one time I used to see those qualities in myself. When I was just starting out I used to wonder how I could be a filmmaker when I wasn't eccentric enough to qualify as one. Now I see I've fallen into my own erratic pattern of existence. And of course I'm strange, therefore qualified to be a filmmaker.

A Star-studded affair

Karan Johar plans to celebrate his 37th birthday today by hosting a grand party at a Worli hotel. The bash promises to be one of the biggest parties of the year, with Karan personally inviting everyone associated with him personally and professionally.

The guest list includes Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan, Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, Shahid Kapur and Priyanka Chopra, Aishwarya and Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, Imran Khan, Kajol, Manish Malhotra, Vivek Oberoi, Tusshar and Ekta Kapoor, Rishi and Neetu Kapoor, Bobby and Tanya Deol, Parmeshwar Godrej and Kajal Anand among others.

Celina waiting for justice

Celina Jaitley would never have expected that a photoshoot she did last year would come back to haunt her.

But it has — in the form of a gadget ad, which features the actress wearing panties that have the words ‘slide to unlock’ written across them. The pictures, which have been morphed, says Celina, have appeared on two websites. She is livid at their misuse and has taken the matter to the cyber crime department. “The law has to take its course now. I want to make sure that people who have harmed my reputation will be prosecuted. I’m sure the police will help me with that,” said Celina. But will she get justice?

Unlikely, say cyber law experts, because in the nine years of the Indian IT Act’s existence, there have been only four cyber crime convictions, and only two relating to pornography. And recent amendments to the Act have ensured that the laws are much softer on cyber criminals. The biggest problem, though, is the lack of enforcement, says cyber law expert Na Vijayshankar. “There is a general lack of interest in the police force in following up cyber crime complaints, especially those related to publishing or transmitting, or causing to be published or transmitted in the electronic form any material that contains a sexually explicit act or conduct. Moreover, most porn-related complaints are filed by individuals, who, with time, may not push for justice,” he explains.

Though cyber law expert Pavan Duggal also berates the lack of enforcement of cyber laws, he adds in the defence of the enforcers that most cyber crime cells don’t have the wherewithal to seize, preserve and produce (with tampering) electronic evidence required for convictions. “There is also a lack of political will. They don’t want to litigate cyber cases as these are mostly transnational crimes with perpetrators outside the country. We don’t have stringent laws for such cases,” he says.

And the amendments to the IT Act that were made effective Feb 5, 2009 have not helped the cause, say experts. “The amendments have covered newer crimes, but have gone soft on criminals as the quantum of punishment has gone down,” says Vijayshankar. Moreover, cyber crimes have now become bailable offences, adds Pavan. “It encourages the perpetrator to destroy electronic evidence once out on bail. And even if you are convicted, you get a maximum sentence of three years, down from five years earlier,” he says.

Neha Dhupia's new love!

The object who is getting a pretty large share of Neha Dhupia’s affection is a canine, gifted to the actress by a friend.

A source said, “Neha used to be petrified of dogs so much so that she wouldn’t venture anywhere close to them. But ever since this pup has come into her life, Neha’s behaviour has completely changed and she’s gotten over her fear of the canine breed.” Maya — that’s what the actress has named the pup — is housed at her place in Goa.

And according to her friends, not a day goes by without Neha calling up to inquire about her pet. We don’t know what boyfriend Ritwik Bhattacharya thinks about this, we are assuming he’s too much of a gentleman to mind sharing his girlfriend’s affection with the newest apple of her eye.

Bips in bed with Billy!

In the Daniel Silverman and Tapan Saha-directed Chimera, Bipasha Basu will do a never-before-seen lovemaking scene with Billy Titanic Zane. If Zane gives his dates, the Bong hottie will begin shooting for the film in July. And if Sharon Stone gives her nod, she’ll soon be shooting at Vidyasagar Setu for another film directed by Saha

Putting all speculations to rest, Bipasha Basu has agreed to do her first Hollywood movie, titled Chimera. Directed by Daniel Silverman and Tapan Saha, the film is expected to go on the floors in July. That’s provided Billy Zane, who has signed the film, is able to give his dates and come down to Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani to shoot for the film, that also has Victor Banerjee playing Bipasha’s father.

Says Saha, “Chimera is a paranormal thriller. Zane plays an American doctor, who takes up an offer in India to work in a hospital.

There, he treats Bipasha. I’ve approached Shabana Azmi to play Bipasha’s mother. I’d want Anil Kapoor to play Billy’s Indian friend.” Bipasha, however, isn’t willing to speak about Chimera just yet. Confirming that Bipasha is doing the film, her manager, Tanujaa V Mehra, sent a message, saying, “It’s too early to talk about the project.”

But Saha is more than ready to share an interesting piece of information: “Bipasha has a love-making scene that Indian cinema hasn’t seen her doing before.”

Saha also claims that his next film, Lost Love, might have Sharon Stone in the lead! “The protagonist is a Bengali doctor who meets an American girl and starts living-in with her, till he has to return to India. They meet after 25 years of separation. By then, both have married. I’ll co-direct this film with Ron Colvy,” he says.

There have been quite a few cases of Indian directors claiming to have cast Hollywood biggies. Saha contends, “Hollywood biggies don’t read scripts if you send them independently, unless one routes it through a casting director, who gets in touch with the star’s manager or agent. If the latter finds the script interesting, only then, is it passed on to the star. I had hired a casting director, who has got in touch with Stone’s manager. I’m told she has appreciated the script.” But what about her astronomical fee?

If my reports are correct, Stone would charge Rs 55 crore toRs 60 crore for a project. But actors of her stature also have a huge hunger for good roles. Money isn’t a factor for them. So moved was Zane with my script, that he is almost charging peanuts for Chimera.”
If Stone gives her nod, Saha will be shooting Lost Love in Kolkata this winter.

I’ll be shooting on the Vidyasagar Setu and at Millennium Park. That apart, I need an old house too. There are scenes in Mumbai and Los Angeles. Only if Stone doesn’t agree, I’d think of approaching the agents of Helen Hunt or Emma Thompson. For the male lead, I might approach Amitabh Bachchan,” he says. One can only hope that the casting stories of Lost Love translate into reality and don’t become a chimera in real life.

RGV sends out 'Jana Gana Mana Rann' music video copies to 500 MPs

A few days before the matter of Ram Gopal Varma's revisionist version of the national anthem goes to the Supreme Court, Ram Gopal Varma and his co-producers Madhu Mantena and Sheetal Talwar have prepared CD's of the their 'Jana Gana Mana Rann' music-video and sent them off to all the members of parliament in the country.

Explains Mantena, "We did this so that the people who lead the country would have a clear idea of what we've done. See, it's easy to believe hearsay, and fall for malicious attempts to prove that we've played around with the National Anthem. Protest in our country is always based on ignorance. We wanted to change that."

This week 500 CDs of the Rann anthem were sent off to the MPs. "This is not meant to influence the judiciary, only to ensure that no one gets the wrong picture," says Mantena.

The Rann publicity machinery claims the film will be released on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti. But the inside information is otherwise.

Says a source, "The October 2 release date was Ram Gopal Varma's attempt to be as defiant and politically incorrect as possible. We've not fixed a release date for Rann."

What will be interesting to look out for is the pairing in the movie.

Can we consider Kareena and Priyanka together? No way, they don’t even like to see each other’s face.

Deepika and Sonam? They might end up discussing Ranbir more than the movie.

Shahid Kapur finds new interest

Actor Shahid Kapur, who had taken a fancy to bikes and splurged Rs.1.5 million on one, has now found a new interest. He has been attracted to photography.

Shahid has purchased a new expensive camera, the D50 from Cannon.

"Cameras are not allowed on sets usually. But, lately Ken Ghosh and Ahmad Khan get blinded by flashes on the sets of one of Shahid's ventures, only to realise that it was none other than the actor taking candid shots without their knowledge, much to the unit's amusement," said a source.

Apart from Ghosh's untitled film, the actor is also busy shooting for Vishal Bharadwaj's "Kaminey" with Priyanka Chopra.

Priyanka gets nervous about steamy scene

Priyanka Chopra on one hand is excited about her upcoming release “Kaminey”, as it is her first film with beau Shahid Kapur, but on the other hand she is upset about a hot scene she has done with a theatre actor who plays her first love interest in the film.

While shooting the scene, she had no reservations as director Vishal Bharadwaj had explained the importance of the scene in the film to her. But now as “Kaminey” is up for release, Priyanka reportedly has developed cold feet and does not want that scene to be a part of the movie.

She feels that she is a more established actress now and her days of “Andaaz” have passed by. “Andaaz”, in which she did a hot number with Akshay Kumar, incidentally was the film which propelled Priyanka into the big league.

She feels that the hot scene in “Kaminey” will do harm to her image, rather than being helpful. So she is trying her level best to convince Vishal not to include it in the film. Let’s see if she is successful!

SRK - Aamir meet up

All those who think that after their high profile meet to resolve the producers-distributors’ ongoing strike against the multiplex lobby Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan haven’t come together again; here’s a piece of news.

The two actors who sent flashbulbs into a tizzy on April 7 at a hotel in Mumbai, met again at a suburban studio a few days ago to catch up with the producers and check what exactly is the status on the strike.

However, this time the media was deliberately kept away because both the Bollywood biggies didn’t wish to take away the focus from the main issue.

A producer said, “The last time, the papers, the news channels and internet sites focussed only on the Aamir-SRK grand union, they completely ignored the cause.

The stars themselves realised this and made it a point to keep their second meeting a completely low-key affair. The multiplex strike still continues despite efforts from every big name in Bollywood to put an end to it. And, Aamir and SRK are very concerned.”

'I want to live like a normal guy'

Salman Khan, who recently landed in Mumbai after a shooting schedule in London, attended a rare public event to announce that he would indeed be back on Season 2 of his game show “10 Ka Dum”, which takes off on Saturday, May 30, on Sony TV.

We caught Salman in one of his coolest moods as he spoke about his return to the small screen and his four back-to-back films this year.

Here’s what he said…

You are back on ‘10 Ka Dum’. How was the experience of doing Season 1? Are there going to be any changes in the format in the new season?

It was a great experience last year and hence I am back on the show. About the format, I think what has worked so far should not be changed.

‘10 Ka Dum’ brought the real Salman Khan to the people. Can you tell us a bit more about the real you?

When we do a movie they think this guy is acting. But it is completely different when we do such a show. Everybody’s character has a lot of shades. Like what I am to you might not be the same as what I am to another person. The show brought out what I am in general.

We stars also have problems like everybody else. Somewhere it affects us too. So if we are not in the right mood and get rude with someone, we also call that person back and behave overtly nice as well to make him feel better.

What all did you learn while doing the show?

What I got to understand is that the way I think in general is how the masses think as well. So somewhere I have not been alienated from the common man.

I want to live my life like a normal guy. I want to travel in a rickshaw or go to Barista for a coffee like everybody else.

They expect me to be this star which I don’t want to be at all times. So when I don’t want to be the star you guys get a lot of material to write about me!

Coming to your fee for the show, we hear you have cut down on it. Is it true? How much have you charged?

Yes I have cut down on my price. But that is just by a small margin.

For now there are going to be 14 episodes of ‘10 Ka Dum’ only?

Yes, that is what they have decided as of now. I don’t know what the plans are after that.

On to films… What are your forthcoming releases?

The first movie to release probably would be ‘Wanted: Dead And Alive’, then I will have ‘Main aur Mrs Khanna’, then ‘London Dreams’. By Diwali we shall have ‘Veer’.

Four films in such a short span…wouldn’t that be too much for the audience?

What do you mean? I think it would be wonderful to release movies everyday! (Laughs)

How much of ‘Veer’ is complete?

We have finished the London schedule and Rajasthan schedule which was the most difficult. I thought it would be difficult to shoot action scenes for ‘Wanted’, but ‘Veer’ was way more difficult. Now we have some 35-40 days of shoot left.

You don’t seem to be doing films which have serious subjects.

There are so many problems in the world. So when I do a film I do it thinking that in those two hours I should make the person laugh and feel relieved and then go back to his regular life.

Even if you look at ‘Khamoshi’, it was a very serious film. The original script had no humour for my character. All the humour that you find in the film was put by me.

So Sanjay (Bhansali) used to take two takes of everything in both ways and after seeing how it went for some days he agreed that it works much better with humour. In fact, I keep asking him why he makes such sad films!

Any chances of ‘Bajirao Mastani’ happening?

I don’t think so. I don’t know what Sanjay (Bhansali) has to say about this though.

Till now Kangana, who is said to have a pivotal role in the movie, has been missing from all publicity of “Kites”.

Supreme Court disapproves of Ramu's song

The Supreme Court on Monday disapproved of the controversial song "Jana Gana Mana Rann" in director Ram Gopal Varma's new film "Rann", saying nobody has the right to tinker with the national anthem.

A vacation bench of Justice V.S. Sirpurkar and Justice R.M. Lodha said this while hearing a lawsuit by the director challenging the denial of permission for exhibition of a promotional film for the song, which is based on India's national anthem "Jana Gana Mana".

"We have read it (the script of the song). It gives a total negative sense. It appears that every line of the national anthem has been proved wrong," said the bench.

"Nobody has got the right to tinker with the national anthem," the bench observed, while denying any prompt legal relief to Varma against the May 8 order of the Central Film Certification Board.

The board had denied Varma the permission for release of the promo on the grounds that the song, "Jana Gana Mana Rann", had distorted and tampered with the national anthem.

Refusing to grant any urgent legal relief to the film director, the bench told him to first approach the appellate tribunal, set up under the Cinematography Act, 1952 to challenge the board's decision.

The bench also asked the tribunal to decide on Varma's lawsuit challenging the board's decision within a month and subsequently asked the film director to come back to it if he was not satisfied with the appellate tribunal's ruling.

Appearing for Varma, senior counsel Arun Jaitley sought scrapping of the board's decision, contending that it has prompted various television channels to not show the promo.

Jaitley contended that the board's decision has made even mobile telephone service providers averse to uploading the song as caller tunes for fear of insulting the national anthem.

In his lawsuit, Varma contended that the "Jana Gana Mana Rann" song in his film merely uses the national anthem in a respectful manner for the purpose of artistic expression.

He said the issue involves a citizens' fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression.

Jaitley argued that if the film song could be misconstrued as showing disrespect to the national anthem, then the flag of various political parties too would be regarded as no lesser an insult to the national flag.

He said after all the flags of parties like the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party and Trinamool Congress bear a striking similarity to the national flag barring their central symbols.

But the court did not appear to be convinced by his argument.

Ramu's battle over 'Rann' continues

Censor board refused to clear his new movie

The Supreme Court on Monday (May 25) asked noted film director Ram Gopal Varma to approach a tribunal set up under cinematogrophy laws to challenge the censor board's direction against showing the movie "Rann".

The censor board refused to clear "Rann" unless it removed a song that's a take-off on the national anthem. Varma has refused to remove the song.

A vacation bench of Justice V.S. Sirpurkar asked the tribunal to decide within a month Varma's application challenging the censor board's decision.

The bench also asked Varma to come to it after a month if he is not satisfied with the decision.

The Censor Board of Film Certification refused permission to air the controversial song. It said the national anthem was distorted in the movie.

Reunion: Mahesh Bhatt with Saaransh actors Anupam Kher and Rohini Hatangde

Black and White: Anupam Kher keeps it slick with black while elegant wife Kirron shines in an off white churidaar. The Louis Vuitton bag is nice but she should have chosen a contrasting colour. We wonder why son Sikander was absent

Family Portrait: Mahesh Bhatt with wife Soni Razdan and their pretty daughters

Pretty Women: Lilette Dubey is so fit and gorgeous; she could give 20 year-olds a run for their money. We love her red kurta. Poonam Dhillon’s oversized blue glares and green kurta is smart. Those peep toes are cute but the bag should have been a solid colour.

Hrithik plays a paraplegic in Bhansali's Guzaarish

Macho takes a beating this year, as heroes across the board are playing either disabled or differently abled individuals in upcoming flicks, redefining the male lead's growing desire to do something that's starkly different.

So if Shah Rukh's character Rizwan Khan in My Name Is Khan suffers from Asperger's Syndrome, Hrithik Roshan is all set to play a paraplegic patient in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish which has Aishwarya Rai as his co-star.

The film bears similarities to John Badham's Whose Life Is It Anyway? and will see Hrithik in a wheelchair for most of the scenes. The film also stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan opposite the actor.

A source reveals, "Hrithik plays Ethan, a radio show host. Aishwarya plays a married nurse who is also Hrithik's caregiver. The film also deals with the controversial subject of mercy killing/euthanasia. Ash's character is interesting because she plays a married woman who gets attracted to Hrithik as the second half progresses. The film has dark tones throughout."

This will be the first time Hrithik will be seen in a serious role. "The film will totally change Duggu's image in the eyes of his audience. He is currently researching for the character and has had several meetings with Bhansali after the narration."

What is paraplegia?
Paraplegia is an impairment in motor and/or sensory function of the lower extremities. It is usually the result of spinal cord injury or a congenital condition such as spina bifida. The area of the spinal canal which is affected in paraplegia is either the thoracic, lumbar, or sacral regions.
