Shah Rukh is ready to make a sequel to "Don"

It seems Shah Rukh Khan's irresistible charm and the incredible slickness and style used by Farhan Akhtar in "Don - The Chase Begins" have not been able to save the film from biting the dust.

Just like Karan Johar's infidelity drama "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna", this action thriller has been given the thumbs down by the audience, going by the upsetting drop in collections since it released Oct 20, a day before Diwali.

In the first few days, "Don", a remake of the 1978 Amitabh Bachchan starrer of the same name, garnered good profits mainly due to its pre-release publicity and slick television promos. Critics have since panned it as a weak film.

"Any film which has a good star cast and proper media hype does well in the first week in terms of collections. It happened with 'Don'. It had big names like Shah Rukh and director Farhan Akhtar and it was marketed smartly. So the initial collections were good," said Deepka Gupta, a New Delhi-based media consultant.

According to a report on boxofficeindia.com, the film did exceedingly well in the first week in spite of discouraging reports. It earned hit status in Mumbai, east Punjab, West Bengal and Mysore. The first week box office collections were 75-80 percent. However, the eighth day registered a drop in collections at many centres. It stood at about 55 percent.

However, Shah Rukh prefers not to take the critics seriously or the viewpoint of moviegoers, many of whom have not liked the modern "Don" at all.

"It is a waste of money. I couldn't sit through the movie after the interval," said Kanat Jain, a 60-something movie buff, who wasn't floored by the film's slickness.

Many others found the film stylish, but beyond that they had nothing good to say about it.

"The title song was shot nicely. Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra were looking good and sexy. But the script was very bad, and it appears that the director has focused only on the action scenes.

"Shah Rukh was nowhere close to Amitabh Bachchan, especially in the 'Khai ke pan Banareswala' number. I felt like closing my eyes and visualising how Amitabh had done the dance scene," Annie Mathew, a young professional working in Singapore, told.

"Shah Rukh was not at all exuding confidence. Maybe he should not do remakes any more. It seems to make him extra conscious," added Mathew, who got tickets easily for the film on the fourth day.

"In terms of style the original 'Don' was more stylish, despite this film being more technically advanced. It had a better script and cast. Amitabh had more style compared to Shah Rukh. Each character stood out in the cast," said Arundhati Chowdhury, a radio journalist.

"Other than that, the film was confusing... The pace is too fast, and it does not register. It's just an average film. One can go and watch this out of curiosity. I prefer Amitabh Bachchan as Don. Zeenat Aman was notches above Priyanka," said Chowdhury.

There is no denying that Farhan emphasised on the film's looks and ignored content, a key factor that plays a major role in the success of any film. In contrast, low-budget hit film "Khosla Ka Ghosla" did very well, a good example of content being king.

"The film's direction is very slick and the locales great. It has a very good background score, something like 'Mission Impossible'. It has a well-directed stunt scene - a drop from an aircraft and a mid-air fight scene - something like a Bond movie. It has a twist in the storyline, which leaves scope for a sequel. But the film cannot compete with the original," said Simi Gandhi, a chartered accountant and a movie buff.

Maybe Shah Rukh has hit a rough patch. After Farah Khan's directorial debut "Main Hoon Na" (2004), he has given a string of flops - "Veer-Zaara", "Swades", "Paheli and "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna". He was banking heavily on "Don" to give a boost to his sliding career graph.

Right now Shah Rukh is aggressively promoting the film. After lambasting critics for panning his film, he launched the "Don" collection of clothing for Louis Philippe - it displays clothes worn by Shah Rukh in the film. It was followed by the launch of a mobile game of "Don".

"Gaming is a very good way of marketing. It is a skill, which everyone should use. My next film is 'Chak De India' which is again a sports-based film. That lends itself to games and all. I would be game if Yashji or Adi (Yash or Aditya Chopra) bring in a game on that theme," Shah Rukh told mediapersons at the game launch.

Though the film has been given a flop status in India, it is doing well in the overseas market. In the US it raked in $1.2 million and in the Gulf grossed above 3.45 million dirhams.

In spite of its bad reviews, Shah Rukh is ready to make a sequel to "Don".

"I would love to make a sequel. If Farhan does not make it, I will definitely do so," he is quoted as having said.

Shot stylishly in Malaysia, this action thriller will appeal mainly to hardcore Shah Rukh fans.

A coy-and-a-session with Neha Dhupia

Source: DNAIndia
She's packed up shooting for the day for Apoorva Lakhia's Shootout at Lokhandwala. She lives alone. Right now, her parents and cousins are in town from Delhi . Rachana Dubey grills Ms Dhupia

What's this Hollywood commercial that you've done?
I haven't shot for it yet. I don't know who's spreading this misinformation. Talks are on with the producers. I've only promoted Police watches in Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. We're planning promotions in Mumbai as well.

What have you been busy with?
I've just completed Ek Chalis Ki Last Local with Abhay Deol .. and Mithiya with Naseeruddin Shah and Ranvir Shorey. After Shootout and Delhi Heights I will start on Dus Kahaniyan.

How do you look back on Priyadarshan's Chup Chup Ke?
With satisfaction. I'm remembered for my salwar-suit-bindi look in the film. Of the 13 characters, Rajpal Yadav got the most attention.

Why have you been avoiding any comments on your film Utthan?
Utthan? I'd prefer to stay tight-lipped on it for reasons best known to me.

You once said that you don't want to do any more love making scenes. Do you mean that?
Of course, I do.

Then, how come you're doing nude and love making scenes in Hot opposite Parvin Dabas?
What rubbish! I'm not doing any such film. Who told this? You must have got this from the internet. I've done such scenes in the past, I've learnt from my mistakes. Today I'm into glamorous roles but not skin flicks.

Which are the most difficult steamy scenes you've shot?
Julie was tough. I did such scenes in Sheesha too.. but Julie was tougher. I was doing them for the first time. I cringe when I think of those scenes.. I won't do them any more. But it's a perforamnce I'm proud of.

You've also had problems with your secretary Bhola Malviya.
I never held back his money. He was making false claims. None of what he said was correct. I wouldn't have become rich overnight by holding back his money. Fortunately my current secretary, Goldie, is not like him at all.

Are you going back to the south movies?
I did my first movie Ninney Ishta Paddaanu in Telegu. I want to go back to the south sometime. When, I don't know.

What if you hadn't won the Miss India title four years ago?
Before the Miss India contest, I was studying for my IAS exams. I was also thinking of joining journalism. If I hadn't won the title, who knows, I could have been a bureaucrat in some government department.

What's the update on your good friend Ritwik Bhattacharya?
He's my friend of 11 years. He's India's most famous squash player. There's nothing cooking between us.

And Amrish Kumar?
He's fashion designer Ritu Kumar's son. He's also my friend from my Delhi days. We know each other quite well. But we're not seeing each other. In fact, there's no man in my life.Honestly if there was someone I'd be the first to talk about him. I would never hide my relationship. I've been open about everything I've done.

Would you marry someone from the film industry?
No, never. I 'd rather stay single than marry someone from this line of work. Not that I've anything against filmi men but I don't see myself finding a life partner here. I've never been attracted to any of my co-stars. Mixing work and pleasure is a strict no-no for me.

On a secluded island, whom would you like for company?
Will Smith. The reasoon being he's extrmely funny. He would have me in splits all the time. I wouldn't be bored for a moment.

Manisha Koirala storming out of a press conference

The recent press conference of the movie Sirf, directed by Rajaatesh Nayar saw some high-voltage drama. A journalist posed a question about Koirala to the director when the stars were on stage, which upset the actress so much that she immediately left with her Australian boyfriend.

Says our source, who was at the conference, "Manisha came in at 8 pm with her boyfriend. The event was supposed to start by then, and she was well in time. She was in a good mood and was chatting with everyone. She even told the person in charge of handling television interviews she would be present till the end."

However, everything changed when the event started. Continues our source, "When the event started and the director and stars came up on stage, Manisha was seen smoking. A reporter asked her 'How ethical is it for you to smoke on the dais?' Manisha ignored this, but before long, another reporter asked the director, 'Have you signed Manisha because she has very little work and does not charge too much money?'"

Manisha was stunned. She got up from her chair at this question. Then, signalling to her boyfriend who was sitting in the audience, she walked out of the press conference, obviously upset. After she left, actor Parvin Dabas took the mike and reprimanded the journalist for asking such a rude question. However, the press conference continued without Manisha."

Says actor Parvin Dabas, who reprimanded the journalist, "I reacted instinctively as I had to make a point to the journalist who asked that question. I didn't want him to get away with it. Frankly speaking, it's the first time I've seen someone being so downright rude to any star. Everyone was stunned. Manisha is an actress of great stature and no one has the right to refer to her in such a way. I guess it was someone who would joke with his friends later, saying, 'I asked this star this question'. I feel such a question reflects on the person asking the question, not on the person who the question is about."

When contacted, Manisha sounded excited about the film and spoke about it with great zeal, " This is a very contemporary subject. After a long time I have a film with a great role and a great story. It is about today's problems where everybody admires the next person for his bigger car and bigger house and thinks the grass is greener on the other side," she said.

However, when asked about the conference, Manisha said, "I was there at 8 pm as I was told that the event would start on time. It started a little late and I had meetings lined up after that. So I had to get up and go halfway through the conference."

When asked about the rude questions addressed to her, she said, "The smoking question was addressed to Ranveer, not me. I've seen a lot in life and these little things don't affect me any more. I simply gave all my interviews and then left. In fact, before I left I even asked journalists if there were any more questions for me to answer."

• Frankly speaking, it's the first time I've seen someone being so downright rude to any star. Everyone was stunned. Manisha is an actress of great stature and no one has the right to refer to her in such a way – Parvin Dabas, co-star

Saif apologized to the security guard for misbehaving

My flop rate is higher than the Khans, John

There is no doubt that John is the new brightest star in Bollywood and his brightness is increasing day by day. Already his popularity is too high especially for the young generation. From his debut film ‘Jism' he has been changing himself rapidly. In ‘Dhoom' he has done even a role with a negative shade. However John has no qualms admitting that his number comes much below than the Khans. “The Khans are right up there while my number comes much below and my flop rate is higher than the Khans.” But he feels that he still has a long way to go.

The 'patch-up’ between brother Ashmit and Amisha, allegedly facilitated by Salman Khan

A recent report in a city tabloid took actress Ameesha Patel by surprise. Ameesha said that she is surprised by the news of her alleged patch-up with brother Ashmit at Salman Khan's Eid party.

According to the report, when Ameesha entered Salman's house, the actor locked Ameesha and brother Ashmit inside a room to facilitate a patch-up between them. A source present at the venue confirms, "Nothing of that sort happened.

Why would Salman interfere in anyone else's personal life? Everyone comes to Salman's house for his Eid party, so did Ashmit and Ammesha. He certainly did not go all out to sort out others' problems. The house was full of guests and Salman is very conscious about all these things. He doesn't like anyone interfering in his personal life, so he doesn't interfere in others' lives too. Plus, he'd never do anything which would make his guests feel awkward. The truth is that Ameesha just exchanged pleasantries with Ashmit when Salman presented them to each other. After that, she immediately left the venue as she the situation was becoming awkward."

When we asked Ameesha about the incident, she said, "Don't be ridiculous. Salman is a good friend of both Ashmit and me. We just happened to be at his house at the same time. Why would he lock us up in a room? All I know is that I had a blast at the party. I would also like to admit that Salman and his family are perfect hosts."

Apparently, this 'patch-up' report has aggravated the rift in the Patel family. "I am travelling and I really don't know what's going on in India," said Ameesha when we contacted her in Australia. The actress was clueless about the entire incident.

So, when will the ice between brother and sister thaw? "I don't want to comment about the future, no one except God can predict what's going to happen," she replied.

It is a known fact that Ameesha is estranged from her family. She is not on talking terms with her brother since the time she filed a case against her parents.

Ashmit lives with his parents, while Ameesha stays alone. The sole person in the family with who the actress has retained a relationship is her grandmother. She continues to be very close to her.

Fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the ride : Dhoom 2

The biggest year-end release Dhoom 2 is revving up to a big release soon. With actors Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in the lead, this sequel is a much larger version of the previous biking fantasy ride.

Shot in little seen Brazil and Nigeria and packed with anti-gravity stunts, Dhoom 2 looks every bit the fast paced thrill ride. This is also the first film that pairs Hrithik Roshan and a very slim Aishwarya Rai on screen.

“Some films need to be a complete departure from the serious and the ‘real’. Dhoom 2 is just that. So, fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the ride,” Hrithik said.

“Hats off to Adi (Aditya Chopra) for his conviction when he spoke to me about the film. He said I always play these larger-than-life characters on celluloid. So, now I need to simply be a girl. I trusted him and had fun being Sunehri,” Aishwarya said.

Dhoom 2 will show the two current superstars Abhishek and Hrithik sparring against each in this cop and robber drama. And if this wasn’t enough, there's a bare-bodied Bipasha Basu opposite Uday Chopra adding to the hot quotient of the film.

So, while the epic drama magic of Umrao Jaan may or may not work for Abhishek and Aishwarya, Dhoom 2 with its edge-of-the-seat thrill might just be the perfect year-ender for each actor in the film. Dhoom 2 hits theatres on November 24.

The most beautiful actress Aishwarya turns 33 this week

She rules the hearts of millions and is touted as one of the most beautiful actresses ever to grace Indian cinema. Aishwarya Rai, who turns 33 Wednesday, returns to the marquee after a long hiatus - playing a courtesan in "Umrao Jaan" and an oomph girl in "Dhoom 2".

The actress, who is said to be dating Abhishek Bachchan, will reportedly announce her engagement on her birthday. According to insiders, Abhishek's ailing grandmother Teji Bachchan is eager to see him married, and the couple is said to be planning to tie the knot early next year.

But Aishwarya, who is apparently attending family dinners and get-togethers at the Bachchan household, is tight-lipped about her relationship.

She is currently busy promoting her two films. In Yash Raj Films' upcoming "Dhoom 2", Aishwarya plays a hi-tech thief along with Hrithik Roshan, while in J.P. Dutta's "Umrao Jaan", a screen adaptation of Mirza Mohammed Haadi Ruswa's Urdu novel "Umrao Jaan Ada" and a tragic historical, she plays a courtesan.

"When Dutta narrated the script to me, I told him that if you get Aishwarya to play the role of Umrao Jaan only then make the film, else drop it. According to me, the character requires an enigmatic quality to it. This is what I feel Aishwarya's personality symbolises," said well-known lyricist Javed Akhtar on the actress.

"Hers is a personality that is a kind of riddle. Even Dutta felt the same way and now after watching the finished product I feel that no one else could have made it."

However, there is a notion among some that she is not a good actress and has hogged the limelight mainly for her looks, and her affairs with co-stars Salman Khan and Viveik Oberoi.

"Aishwarya is not known as a bankable actor. People think of her as wooden. She can't emote. Dutta is not only a good director; he is also a good technician. He knows how to extract work from his artist. We are confident that Aishwarya must have played the role convincingly," New Delhi-based distributor Sanjay Mehta told IANS.

"Umrao Jaan" and "Dhoom 2" will put to test her versatility. Critics believe that so far only Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been able to extract the best out of her in his hit "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" and "Devdas", India's official entry for the Oscars in 2003.

Her being crowned Miss World in 1994 made her entry into films smooth. She was flooded with offers but chose to start her acting career with Mani Ratnam's Tamil film "Iruvar".

Her performance was critically appreciated and she soon forayed into Bollywood with Rahul Rawail's "Aur Pyar Ho Gaya" opposite Bobby Deol. The film not only fetched her a Filmfare award for best debut but she had top-notch directors making a beeline for her house.

She was soon signed up by one of the most talented filmmakers in the industry, Bhansali, for "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam". In this love triangle, which also had Ajay Devgan, she was paired for the first time with Salman Khan.

Their onscreen chemistry was electrifying and the film was widely appreciated and fetched her Filmfare's best actress award.

She started receiving offers from some of the biggest names in the industry - Subhash Ghai, Yash Chopra and Mansoor Khan.

Chopra signed her up with Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan in "Mohabattein". The film didn't do well but the audience liked her pairing with Shah Rukh. Bhansali cast the two in his magnum opus "Devdas" that went on to become a major hit.

Post-"Devdas" Aishwarya shifted her focus to Hollywood. Her first international venture was Gurinder Chadha's "Bride & Prejudice". The film was a flop but it didn't stop her from getting new projects.

Some of her prestigious international projects include - "Provoked", "The Last Legion" opposite Colin Firth and Sir Ben Kingsley and "Chaos".

While scaling new heights in Bollywood and international films, Aishwarya never crossed the line in terms of skin show on screen.

"I am not comfortable about kissing or nudity. I am clear about what I want. I'll work only with good directors who'll offer me two-dimensional roles. The director and the role are most important.

"Women in the industry have been exploited very often but there are some actors who believe that the short cut to stardom is through nudity or exposure. Such success is, in fact, very short-lived. I have never done a kissing scene nor do I have intentions to," she is quoted as saying.

Since she set foot in filmdom, the India media has been sometimes nasty to her but she hasn't bothered much about what they thought or wrote about her.

"Someone asked me why I'm politically correct, even when people hit out so openly at me. But the truth is I've never been brought up to behave any other way. I can't say anything hurtful about anyone. I just don't believe in saying mean things. I won't feel good doing that. This is the way I am.

"I'm amazed how many people feel good hitting out at me. They're welcome to do it. Earlier, they had more leeway to deny their indiscretions in print. But now on television they look pretty ridiculous denying what they say," she has said.

Apart from promoting a wide variety of disparate brands, Aishwarya has many firsts to her credit - she has the distinction of being the first Indian actor to be a member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival and also appeared on Oprah Winfrey's talk show.

About her appearance on Winfrey's show, she told the media: "I never thought I'd actually be meeting her -- and that too, on her show! I was extremely happy to be on her show. I admire her."

She also appeared on another prestigious American talk show "60 Minutes".

She has graced the covers of international magazines like TIME, which placed her on their list of the "100 Most Influential People in the World Today". Aishwarya has also been termed as one of the most beautiful women by TIME magazine.

Aishwarya, whose last Hindi release was "Shabd" that sank without a trace at the box office, is hoping to hit the bull's eye with "Umrao Jaan", "Dhoom 2" and Mani Rathnam's "Guru". While "Umrao Jaan" releases next Friday, "Dhoom 2" is set for a Nov 24 release and "Guru" in December.

Priyanka Chopra is all set to launch an official website for herself. Currently, the actress is in the process of meeting several web-page designers, both from India and abroad, for this.

The only problem is that she has not been able to get the domain www.priyankachopra.com . "On the day I won the Miss World pageant, the domain was booked by someone. The website will have a collection of Priyanka's photographs from her childhood days. It will also contain exclusive photographs from films on which she has worked and will be working in future.

On the work front, Priyanka is busy shooting Rumi Jaffery's film God Tusi Great Ho with Salman Khan and Amitabh Bachcan. This is her second film with Salman, after Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. "I admire the way Salman leads his life. He is a very cool guy. We both play journalists in the film," she says.

In fact, I feel very young. I’m told I look young and hot in Don which makes me feel good. A couple of days ago, I watched Veer Zaara on TV, I looked really old as the buddha guy.

What are your birthday plans?
I’ll chill at home, I need to relax. The past few days have been hectic with Diwali and Eid. Also I’ve been very busy with the promotion of Don. Now that the film has done well, may be I’ll call the producer home and count the money. I think I’ll just do that.

Any particular birthday of yours that you remember fondly?
I’ve never sat down and thought about this. I don’t consider birthday to be a special day. It’s like any other day. It only brings you closer to lesser birthdays.

What’s the best birthday gift you’ve ever received?
For the past few years my friends have not given me anything. They say, “What do we give you, you’ve got everything.” But I love to receive books, I’m a book lover.

What would you gift yourself?
In an interview earlier, I’d said, “Don is my birthday gift to Amitji.” (Grins) Now, I will gift it to myself.

What’s the take on the box-office collections of Don?
I’m thrilled, the collections are fantastic. When I first watched Don, I felt it was long. But it’s a modern way of making a film. We were very clear from the beginning that the film was targeted at the youth. And it has worked with its audience. They love the film. It’s a new Don and that’s what has worked. I feel I have acted very well in Don. I say this very rarely after watching my films.

Did you anticipate a hit?
While I was making it, I thought it would be a big hit. But after watching it, I was a bit worried because I found it long. The story was a little convoluted, we were not sure if everyone would understand it. Then, a certain section of the audience didn’t appreciate it. But I repeat, the film was for the youth.

Even the songs were recorded with the youth in mind. They have loved the film and me. No one has said I was bad, even in the Khaike paan song. My final analysis about the success of my films are with my kids. If they like it, then I know it’s a hit. Last night Aryan sang Khaike paan… and danced to it. Now I know the film is a success.

Were you upset with the negative reviews?
Honestly, not too many reviewers have a critical knowledge and over the years critics have increased but the knowledge hasn’t. Some critics don’t review a film, they make personal statements. The audience isn’t swayed by what the critics write, they still go to watch a film if they want to. Krrish and Fanaa both didn’t get critical approval but the films did great business at the box-office. I respect the opinions of a few critics…even if they don’t like my films.

What irritated me was a TV channel talking about the end of the film, they even revealed the twist on its first day. You don’t do that.

There have been comparisons with Amitabh Bachchan.

I’ve done films of Dilip saab and Amitji because they are great. I can’t match up to them. Whether it’s Devdas or Don, I’ve done it my way. I’m proud of it.

It seems your fans now call you Don.
Yes. It feels good when you’re identified with a certain character.

The initial collections of Don have been attributed to your star presence.
(Laughs) That didn’t help me in Paheli. I feel the brand of Don is responsible. The promotion evoked curiosity. It was after long that I had a release which said Shah Rukh Khan in and as. The audience trusted us. I’m very thrilled with the success of the film.

How come you went all out to promote the film?
It’s my film. After a long time I had a solo release. For the past few years I’ve had only multi starrers. I cannot be in the forefront. Paheli I feel was a different take. Even with Main Hoon Naa, I felt Zayed Khan, Amrita Rao and Farah Khan should be more visible. With Don, I knew I had to just go all out and give a proper message. I’m glad I did that.

Do you feel the pressure of being the numero uno actor?
With every hit, I feel more responsible about my next release. Right now, I’m very charged about Chake De India and Om Shanti Om. I want to make lots of films. I don’t want to restrict myself to just a couple of films. Even healthwise I’m feeling great.

If you could go to a certain age which would you choose?
My son Aryan’s, so that I could play with him and not worry about my father being a superstar.

I am no superstar: Saif Ali Khan

Saif Ali Khan talk to Rajeev Masand for CNN IBN
Source: CNN IBN
An talented actor who after years of being saddled with thankless roles decided to break away and show, what he is really made of. In the last two-years Saif Ali Khan has delivered not only a string of hits but also a bunch of credible performances that put him at the top of his league.

CNN-IBN Entertainment Editor: Rajeev Masand speaks to the star about his journey to the top.

Rajeev Masand: Let me start with an offensive question first. You spend very little time in India these days. You are either travelling or shooting abroad. And when in India, you are seen mostly shooting for ad films, doing lots of endorsements for big brands. It seems you are on an endorsement spree to just grab some money and run. Is that true?

Saif Ali Khan: Not really. I would rather make money doing some prestigious top-level brand endorsements. I do not make too much money from movies. And my focus is not just to make money. I do films because I love them. I do a script and work with a production house simply because I love being an actor. I am not just looking at the financial gains but its got more to do with doing something substantial by way of films or even endorsements for that matter.

I feel lucky to have got the opportunity of doing big endorsements. I know that it will not last forever and that all these projects might not always come my way. But I just hope it lasts for a few more years. Perhaps I won’t take the money and run but would rather gracefully accept the money and walk away.

Rajeev Masand: You have been on a roll work-wise. Your solo films Parineeta,Salaam Namaste, Being Cyrus and most recently Omkara have done quite well at the box office. Tell me, does success tastes any different now?

Saif Ali Khan: I think you get things only when you are ready for them. When I wasn’t successful, I had many fantasies about how things would be like when I become successful. I think one of the best things about being successful is the lack of pressure in terms of competition from other actors.

I have done solo films, and the most wonderful aspect was that I was free to do my own bit. In my past films, I often felt inferior to the people I was working with. That feeling of inferiority somehow played on my mind and affected me slightly. I only hoped to get out of that slot and do better things on my own.

Some two-three years ago, I got a clear idea in my mind that I wanted to play a character that would be urban and new. I wanted to play someone who can is more of a character than a hero. I wanted to play this guy who is not western but is just a normal guy living in Melbourne or Amsterdam. And then I played exactly similar characters in Salaam Namaste and Hum Tum.

Rajeev Masand: You also played such character in Being Cyrus.

Saif Ali Khan: Being Cyrus is slightly different. I think it was more of an artistic sort of whim. Though it was an amazing production. There is another world out there of alternate cinema, which works on low budget but is great cinema with really well organized crews and teams. That was also something that I enjoyed doing.

Rajeev Masand: Is that the reason why people were so pleasantly surprised with Omkara where they see an actor that they have perceived largely as this ‘hip urban guy’ suddenly take a u-turn with a film set in the Indian heartland.

Saif Ali Khan: Yes, that was the plan and I think it worked. Its nice to balance things out by doing films like Omkara. That is how people are in a large part of our country. These kinds of films are not surreal but they have got more to do with a different kind of reality. Though it has got little to do with absolute real life and emotions.

Hum Tum made me look like a new hero. It did not look like someone I had played before. There was something about the character that looked right and fitted all the parameters of Hindi cinema. But at the same time had newness to it because it had me playing it.

We have taken the same thing forward with Salaam Namaste and to a lesser extent with my latest film Tara Rum Pum as well.

Rajeev Masand: What are the benefits that success allows you today? Something that you did not have some 5-7 years ago?

Saif Ali Khan: I think, confidence and freedom of choice are a few things that I have now. The freedom to take a couple of months off and to be able to say that ‘I won’t do this project because I choose to spend the time with my family’ is something that is possible now. Actually I am just beginning to be successful and it has got to do more with luck and guidance. I think I still have a long way to go.

Rajeev Masand: You play guitar, don’t you?

Saif Ali Khan: Yes I do. In High school it was compulsory for each one of us to take up a music instrument. And I took up guitar. I loved guitar-oriented music whether it was classical or rock. I thought it would be a fun to learn and then I started thoroughly enjoying it. I recently performed with Parikrama, which is a fantastic group. We are planning more of such concerts in late December in about four cities. I think that should be exciting.

Rajeev Masand: Do you feel powerful with your guitar? Like when you performed on stage was it a big thrill?

Saif Ali Khan: When you are actually playing live, it is a different ball game all together. It is a tremendous experience. If you are just pretending to play, you can feel like a rock star. But if you are actually playing, it’s a special feeling. Its not like when you are acting, but rather a very humbling experience. You feel like you have created an artistic field around yourself. Similarly I feel that doing theatre would really be expanding horizons.

Rajeev Masand: So do you plan to take up theatre?

Saif Ali Khan: Not really. I don’t see myself doing Hindi theatre and with all due respect to the English theatre, I don’t see much relevance of it in India. The audience is limited and even if you are great you perhaps won’t be noticed that much. You have a limited amount of time to spare, and you would certainly want to spend that doing films. You need to manage time between work and family and have a bit of a private life. Doing a play would perhaps be too time consuming.

Rajeev Masand: When you go for holidays do you prefer big cities or the country?

Saif Ali Khan: I like both and I’m very fortunate that either I adapt very quickly or my work suits what I happen to want. We were in New York for about a month and half. Just as it was getting crazy, we were shifted to Bedford, which is just an hour away from the New York City. It is full of lakes and trees.

I didn’t go back to the city even on day offs. It was really nice. I am slowly becoming a country person with good company around or even alone. But, yes there have been a lot of big cities in my life recently.

Rajeev Masand: Do you crave for anonymity sometimes? I asked Preity Zinta this question and she said that she really wants to be left alone and not be recognized all the time. I asked Shah Rukh Khan the same question and he said he would be clueless if people didn’t recognize him. Would you also like to be left alone sometimes?

Saif Ali Khan: I think I have that amount of anonymity to a certain extent. We are not world famous in any possible sense. It also depends where you go. Usually only Bangladeshis, Indians or Pakistani people recognize you.

I probably take it more seriously when there are other stars around. When you are at a premier or a public place signing autographs, I want my share of stardom at that time. But generally if I’m with my daughter in a mall, and some kind of a scene gets created, I have to alter my thinking to not loose my temper and say ‘leave me alone’ kind of things.

I am a very private person and I do get a little intrusive because of that. Unfortunately you have to get rude when things are getting out of hand. At times at a press conference or somewhere else, things do get out of hands. It’s a stampede sometimes with people literally jumping on to you. Sloppiness does get me a little tense when it gets rowdy and noisy.

At times it’s not even worth answering a question because people can hardly hear you. But of course you have to remember that all that would be seen would be your face. You wish if only people could see what is happening behind the camera they would perhaps understand. To incessantly answer your question, I love my job and I love doing it.

And of course I appreciate that stardom has opened so many doors. We all are so privileged. I am very grateful to everyone for it, but do I crave anonymity? Perhaps I’m not famous enough to crave for something like that.

Rajeev Masand: Do you think of yourself as a role model for your kids?

Saif Ali Khan: Yes. I am a role model for them whether I think of myself as one or not. Everything that I do, somewhere down the line both of them will base what they want and what they don’t want on what I’m like. Whatever you do, you are going to make a deep impression as a parent. Whether you give helpful guidance to them or not, it remains a fact that they will look up to you.

Rajeev Masand: So do you have mind your Ps and Qs for that?

Saif Ali Khan: I think I am quite well mannered in that sense. But sometimes kids see you in situation when you are getting a bit too much of attention. I do scowl at times.

My father is a role model for me. He never looses his cool. He is a true gentleman in a very dignified sense. My sister and my mother always tell me to look up to my father in tense situation. They tell me that when in doubt I should look at my father how he would react in a situation like this. I would like to set similar example for my kids.

Rajeev Masand: Of the two of your kids, who is the more spoilt one?

Saif Ali Khan: I spoil both of them equally. Its weird because both my kids Sara (daughter) and Ibrahim (son) have such distinct natures. Sara came first by a couple of years. She is six years elder to my son. She is already a young lady now. Right now Ibrahim is obsessed with Count Dracula.

He plays cricket and many other games. His mum has enrolled him in Karate classes so I have been going there to catch some of his action. His favourite sport is cricket. I read out stories to them and its fun to expose them to my childhood heroes. I tell them about things like Treasure Island and the stories that I have read as a kid.

Rajeev Masand: So do you think your son is going to pick up (cricket) what you didn’t ?

Saif Ali Khan: I wasn’t so bad really. He plays pretty well now. I think it will take some time before he knows for sure that is he is going to take up cricket seriously. By the time he turns ten, we will know whether it’s a gift like it was with my grandfather and father.

Rajeev Masand: Do they have any favourite film of yours?

Saif Ali Khan: I don’t know and I never really ask them. I think only recently have they found me acceptable. Like most people I don’t think either of them were Saif fans till about five-six years ago.

Rajeev Masand: So who were they fans of?

Saif Ali Khan: Shah Rukh, Salman who else? Sara used to kiss the TV whenever Shah Rukh would to come. Ibrahim does looks up to me. He copies more or less everything including my hair-cut, clothes and other stuff. There is great amount of responsibility there as well.

Rajeev Masand: Well all the best you. We hope you continue to be a great actor and an even better dad.

Saif Ali Khan: Thank you Rajeev. It was a pleasure talking top you.

The perfectionist actor Aishwarya

People change and so do their equations with others. Initially, the mere presence of Aishwarya Rai intimidated actress Vidya Balan. But this is a thing of the past. While shooting for Mani Ratnam's Guru, earlier Aishwarya would never talk to Vidya. But, more recently when a particular shot was in progress, Aishwarya realised that Vidya did not have her hairpin on (required to maintain the continuity in a scene). Both Ratnam and Vidya didn't notice the slip. But, Ash being the perfectionist that she is noticed and immediately went back to her make-up van and sent the hairpin to Vidya. "Just before Vidya would deliver the shot, Ash's hair dresser went up to Vidya and gave her the hairpin," says our source. Vidya was flummoxed at this gesture extended towards her. That's the smart Ash we know of - trying to change an equation depending on the box-office success of the person.

Amitabh Bachchan composed and sung two songs for Baabul

Amitabh Bachchan is humming a new tune in Baabul. "It's a tune I remember. I just thought I'd use it in Baabul because it fit perfectly. I played with the notes and came up with this song for Baabul and recorded the song just a few days ago. In Ravi Chopra's Baghban I had sung four numbers. In Baabul, I've recorded two. But they are rather pensive numbers which I've composed," he says.

Inspite of singing in the past, Big B insists that he isn't much of a singer. "I like to meet up with Aadesh Shrivastava, sit in his music room and fool around with the notes. In Baabul, for the first time I've contributed to a tune. Obviously the orchestral arrangements are Aadesh's. The theme song ‘Kehta hoon bitiya’ in Baabul is tuned and sung by me. In Baabul, the full theme song (written by Sameer) is mine."

Big B is glad that a film stressing Indian values has been made. "Television is so full of family dramas that this genre is hardly attempted. Baabul is very traditional and close to our hearts. It addresses the sensitive issue of widow remarriage. Why does a young widow become a victim of ridiculous customs, almost an outcast? Like all movies from BR films that address a social issue," he says.

About his on-screen rapport with his Baabul co-star Hema Malini, Big B says, "We aren't doing as many films as we used to earlier. In Baabul, Hema is very much part of the drama. In Sholay there was the effort to rehabilitate the widow. That sentiment continues in Baabul. Cinema needs to raise the collective conscience level of the audience."

Last week, Big B walked the ramp with Hema Malini. He explains, "Today, the promotion and marketing of a film is as critical as its making. For Baabul we wanted to do something novel. So we devised a fashion show," he says.

Recently, the Bhojpuri audience in UP and Bihar went ballistic over Big B's guest appearance in Ganga. As for his Bhojpuri dialogues, Big B says, "I had spoken the Awadhi dialect in Ganga Ki Saugandh and Adaalat. In Ganga, I spoke Bhojpuri, which is similar to Awadhi, for the first time."

In fact, last year, Bachchan had also made a guest appearance in a Kannada film Amrithvarsham. Ganga and Amrithvarsham are Big B's only two stints in regional cinema. "I did the two guest appearances because two dear friends asked me to. I was asked to do a cameo in Rajnikanth's next Tamil project. But I declined as I didn't have the time. Also learning a South Indian language is a huge responsibility (in the Kannada film, he spoke English). I truly admire artistes from Mumbai who act in South Indian films and also speak the language. Rajnikanth and I are close friends and we have done films together. I'd have loved to be in his film."

He is thrilled by the spectrum of films released this year. "Films of various genres have been accepted this year. It's an exceptional year for Hindi cinema. Guru, Dhoom 2, Umrao Jaan and Vivah are still to come…,” he says.

* Obviously the orchestral arrangements are Aadesh's. The theme song ‘Kehta hoon bitiya’ in Baabul is Tuned and sung by me – Bachchan

Men's are mere clone to women

According to Mallika, a man's sex appeal lies between the ears. Surprised? Actually Mallika can't resist herself from making such surprising quotes. In a recent interview, when asked what sort of a man does she prefer – metrosexual or retrosexual, Mallika raised an eyebrow and said, “Metrosexual? I think they are mere clone to women. They go to beauty parlors to get a manicure, pedicure, facial ….that's called being a metrosexual? Then they wear colors like orange, pink and red, the way women do; go into kitchen and call themselves chef. Is that it?”
“I'm a Jat and no Jat is 100 per cent literate. To most, physical beauty is very important. However, grey matter is most important to me. But, my man shouldn't take things too seriously as then, life became boring,” Mallika added.

I'm 45 and I have two grandkids, Mallika

Yet another controversy has surfaced regarding Mallika Sherawat and this one concerns her age. The tabloids insist that she cannot be 25 years old as claimed by her mother. Instead, she could well be 35 years old.

A private TV channel even aired Sherawat's group photo taken in way back 1995 when she was working as an airhostess. Records show her age then to be 24 years old!

Mallika, who celebrated a birthday earlier this week, is however amused by all the speculation.

Talking to a leading news channel, she joked, "You know something. I'm 45 and I have two grandkids. “ It's just that about me there's more misinformation than information. And surprisingly, they inflate all my positives and negatives. They inflate my ego, my success, my failure -- and now they've inflated my age!"

Having earned rave reviews for her performance in Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Sherawat will be now seen as an ex-CIA agent in a movie ‘Dasavatharam’ with Kamal Hassan, where the actor himself plays a record-breaking ten roles!

Reveals Ravi Kumar, director of the movie, "Mallika agreed to do the movie even before she saw the script. She plays a bold, modern girl. It was a pleasure working with her as she would report every morning at seven on the dot."

"But one had to be professional since Kamal himself would reach the sets around 2.30 -3 am everyday!

He would do his make-up for about five hours and by the time Mallika arrived he would be ready for the shot,” he adds.

So while her kitty is full of work why is she keeping a low profile these days?

"I really haven't been keeping a low profile. I just think and believe that it is time for me to shut up and do some good work. I've blabbed enough," she gushes.

Enter Aryan - Mr. A (Hrithik Roshan) - A hi-tech international thief. After pulling off a series of impossible heists all over the world, his next target is Mumbai, India. The case is given to ACP Jai and Ali. Helping them put the pieces of the puzzle together is ACP Shonali Bose (Bipasha Basu), Jai's college mate, now a police officer in her own right. For the last two years Shonali has been tracking these amazing thefts and is now an expert on this thief, who no one has seen.

Once in Mumbai, Mr. A finds his match in Sunehri (Aishwarya Rai), a petty yet clever thief. She makes him an offer he finds very hard to refuse. A partnership! Aryan accepts.

And so the game begins - a game of cat and mouse - a game of good V/s bad.

The "COPS" - Jai, Shonali and Ali; and they are after Aryan and Sunehri - "The ROBBERS".

From the desert of Namibia to the backwaters of Goa, the mean streets of Mumbai and the ancient forts of Rajasthan, and finally to "Wild n Exotic" Rio, Brazil.

Does ACP Jai Dixit manage to nab Mr. A? Or does Mr. A prove to be too much for him?

Never-Seen-Before Action Sequences, Hi-Tech Heists, Breathtaking Hi-Speed Chases, Non-Stop Laughter and Excitement will lead you to the answer to these questions.

Go On...! Enjoy the RIDE...!! ONCE AGAIN...!!!

To view more details about each character, read further.

JAI DIXIT (ABHISHEK BACHCHAN)
In a world ridden with crime and criminals, the need of the hour is a law enforcement officer who can bring things to order. A tough yet sharp Super Cop.

ACP Jai Dixit is all this and more. A Super Cop with a mission... to put an end to crime. As always he believes that it is his job to eliminate crime, not the criminal. A no-nonsense police officer, he fights his battle against all odds and leads from the front. His latest assignment - Mr 'A' - an international thief. How do you catch a thief who leaves behind no clues... who no one has ever seen.

Jai Dixit has a plan. He rises up to the challenge and is soon on the trail of the Master Thief. But is it that he has met his match this time?

ARYAN (HRITHIK ROSHAN)
He works alone!

He trusts no one!

No one has seen him!

He pulls off the most daring and impossible heists. He comes out of nowhere and disappears without a trace. Police all around the world are baffled. His methods are innovative and modern. His planning, flawless.

He's cool, he's hot. He's smooth yet tough. With looks that could make any woman go weak in the knees, there is finesse in everything he does. A connoisseur, he has style and a fine taste for all the things in life; be it food, wine or clothes.

As Jai Dixit says at one point... He's the perfect thief!

He is Aryan. He is the elusive Mr. "A"!

But it is said that all criminals make at least one mistake.

Does Aryan slip up? Does he make that one fatal error?

SUNEHRI (AISHWARYA RAI)
Sunehri, the "golden girl" treats every opportunity as a golden chance. She stays in the suburbs of Mumbai, but dreams big. She dreams of Amsterdam, of Australia... even America.

Spunky, spontaneous and sexy, Sunehri lives life one day at a time. The danger or repercussion of anything never occurs to her sharp yet innocent mind. And that is probably because nothing really bad has ever happened to her. But the most significant event that does occur is when Aryan comes into her life. From that moment her life takes a new turn; actually a couple of turns. The resulting 'spin' takes her on a ride she won't forget in a hurry.

SHONALI BOSE (BIPASHA BASU)
She is attractive, intelligent, vivacious, honest, sexy, hardworking, beautiful and an awesome dancer. All these qualities not being any kind of pre-requisite, she is a police officer. ACP Shonali Bose is a cop and a damn good one. Like her college mate Jai Dixit, she too works in great detail to get into the mind of the criminal. And that's what she has done for the last two years. She is an expert on Mr. "A". Having won many medals for being the best sharpshooter in the force, it can be said that she never misses her target. The only difference between her and Jai is that she wouldn't think twice before shooting down a criminal.

Nothing personal... it's just what she believes - one criminal dead is one criminal less!

ALI (UDAY CHOPRA)
His "Mummy" is definitely watching over him as his guardian angel. But Ali still doesn't take his life too seriously. Although, he is now a police officer and Jai Dixit's partner, the equation between them is still the same. He still loves riding his bike. He still falls in love with every single woman he meets! And he still gets regularly reprimanded by Jai Dixit. He still has his yellow bike and still feels very much at home in Jai's house. He still believes that life is simple and that it is we who complicate it. He still has a big heart and a smile that is even bigger. And it is still true that he and Jai make a great team. He is fiercely loyal to Jai and if push comes to shove, he will go to any extent to fight for him.

And he's still funny... actually... funnier!

Celina Jaitley has no qualms to be called sexy, and finds nothing wrong if directors present her as a sex-idol on screen. “Actually, they do it according to the demands of the role. I have not come across anybody who has tried to portray me irrespective of the demand of the role,” gushed the sexy actress.

Umrao Jaan' will be the first Abhishek-Aishwarya release

The Abhishek Bachchan-Aishwarya Rai chemistry rocks – that's the unanimous view. Whosoever has seen J.P. Dutta's ‘Umrao Jaan', including the members of the Censor Board (the three hour long film has been passed without any cut), has been raving about the jodi. “The tension in the air was palpable and both have done a great job,” an insider present during the screening says. The screening for the censors was on October 24. Censor Board members praised the film sky high. Aishwarya's performance also came in for praise and her image as a non-actor will die a natural death after that. ‘Umrao Jaan' will be the first Abhishek-Aishwarya release after rumour of their affair made headlines. The film is scheduled to release on November 3.

“ Jaan-E-Mann will take Indian cinema to a completely different level” says Akshay Kumar

Jaan-E-Mann has hit back strongly. As expected, post Eid the collections of Jaan-E-Mann have gone up. The advance booking report for the second week are very positive. Well Jaan-E-Mann was steady all this week till Eid but post Eid it is a completely different story. Jaan-E-Mann can safely be declared as a hit now.

Akshay Kumar feels that Jaan-E-Mann is amongst his best works ever. “ Jaan-E-Mann will take Indian cinema to a completely different level” says Akshay Kumar. He also says “Salman and I made you laugh in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and this time in Jaan-E-Mann will make you cry”.

Sajid Nadiadwala feels that this movie will entertain as this movie is targeted on the family audience. It is the story of relationships with strong emotional values. It is not a movie on divorces or extra-marital affairs as is the current trend. It is not stereotypical. And yes the families have responded well. The collections of Jaan-E-Mann are astonishing. It has collected huge revenues from just the Mumbai territory. The revenues worldwide are phenomenal too.

Jaan-E-Mann has found a lot of favor from the audiences and the thing they liked the most about the movie is Akshay Kumar, his laughter, Salman Khan and Anupam Kher.

Well Jaan-E-Mann, the way it has picked up was expected but not so late. It is rarely seen that a movie picks up from the second week onwards. The advance booking at cinema halls are packed. Jaan-E-Mann definitely deserves this. To substantiate our claims, there was a huge procession in Meerut amongst Salman fans who walked almost 5 kms to watch the movie. They gathered in hundreds.

The songs are the biggest USP of Jaan-E-Mann along with a concrete script. All these factors just add to why Jaan-E-Mann is beautiful. Go watch Jaan-E-Mann now.

Diwali update 4: Week 2 holds the key

Business Talk With Taran Adarsh
Source: IndiaFM
Week 1 of the two Diwali releases, DON and JAAN-E-MANN, has ended and I'd like to share a few observations with the readers…

The Week 1 figures are a clear indicator that the thriller genre [DON] has scored over romance [JAAN-E-MANN]. With a bountiful Week 1, the distributors of DON are in the comfort zone. But will it go higher or lower is too early to predict, since it all depends on its performance in Week 2. The collections of the film fell on Thursday [at places, the drop was drastic], the last day of Week 1. A section of the industry attributes it to the cricket match, while a majority of traders attribute the decline in collections to its content. Let's see what's in store in Week 2.

As for JAAN-E-MANN, it's standing on a shaky stool right now. Spoke at length to one of the main distributors of JAAN-E-MANN [name withheld], who admitted that the film hasn't performed to their expectations. He sounded low. Will its business pick up in Week 2? The owner of a leading multiplex chain in Mumbai is keeping his fingers crossed. A few people have written off the film. A few are optimistic. Let's see where the tide turns!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a general feedback of several traders this Diwali and Idd. The business has not been optimum this festive season. During the festive season, the size of the wallet grows fatter and the spending capacity increases multi-fold. People are in a mood to celebrate, go out with their families and friends and indulge in revelry. But film business this year was far from stupendous!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I maintain, DON is a weak film and sometimes weak films weave magic at the box-office [repeating the last line from my review]. But the magic of DON should be attributed to the Diwali and Idd festivities of course, and also to SRK's passionate drive to promote the film. He went all out to promote his film. Why, even today, SRK is giving his best to DON, making it a point to attend Hungama head honcho Neeraj Roy's 'DON Games' launch at a suburban hotel. Wish other actors in the industry were as passionate about promotion.

P.S.: This sentiment is also echoed by one of the prominent distributors of JAAN-E-MANN, besides a number of producers I spoke to during the course of the week.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Till a few days ago, the Khan versus Khan clash kept the media busy. Now, Hrithik Roshan and his Rs. 35 crore deal for three films has hit headlines. Every television or print journo I meet these days is only discussing Adlabs' strategy of giving Hrithik a lucrative deal. So, what's new about it?

Star fees have always constituted approx. 55% to 65% of a film's budget. The arithmetic of film-making has undergone a sea-change and what was charged in lacs in the 1970s and 1980s has changed to crores today. Also, the volume of business has shown a meteoric rise since HUM AAPKE HAIN KOUN and 2006 has been a landmark year, with films crossing magical figures in the initial weeks itself.

As for the Adlabs-Hrithik deal, why this hullabaloo? If Hrithik has quoted an 'x' amount, isn't Adlabs willing to pay it? And Adlabs is no fly by night operator. Manmohan Shetty of Adlabs, one of the most respected names in film business, has been an integral part of the industry for over three decades. Adlabs must've surely done their homework before agreeing to this figure. They must be supremely confident of recovering their investment, otherwise why would they pay an 'x' amount?

No one does charity here, after all!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Himeshbhai, what's going on? Himesh Reshammiya is planning to make a big announcement on Saturday afternoon [U.K. time] at a press meet in London. Is he turning to acting? Is he turning to film production [he has produced several successful serials in the past]? Why this suspense? We'll find out when he announces his ambitious plans in London. Watch this space!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THIS WEEK IN 2005
[Weekend: October 21-23, 2005]

This Friday witnessed the release of HANUMAN [animation] and U, BOMSI N ME. While HANUMAN was aggressively promoted prior to its release, U, BOMSI N ME came literally unannounced. The pre-release promotion was as good as zilch and most moviegoers weren't even aware that the film had released. Hence, its fate was crystal clear on Day 1 itself. HANUMAN, on the other hand, had a 35% + start at several screens. The opening was better than most recent releases and the collections stabilized with the commencement of Diwali vacations. HANUMAN had been appreciated by kids and the appreciation only translated into stronger collections subsequently.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THIS WEEK IN 2004
[Weekend: October 22-24, 2004]

Low on hype and much lower on substance, KIS KIS KI KISMAT came without a bang and left without a whimper. The verdict was loud and clear on Day 1 itself: KIS KIS KI KISMAT had flopped big time. The dismal opening of KIS KIS KI KISMAT came as a jolt to many an industry person who expected the film to take a flying start, also because of the festive season [Dashehra] and the subsequent holidays.

The week also witnessed the release of RGV's VAASTU SHASTRA. But the Sushmita Sen starrer also opened to an ordinary response almost all over [the opening should've been in the range of 90% +, due to aggressive promotion and the holiday period] and did reasonably well on Saturday and Sunday. Monday onwards, VAASTU SHASTRA showed a decline in b.o. collections, even at metros.

Amitabh Bachchan as Balraj Kapoor
He towers over everybody – in his thoughts, in his wisdom, in his sheer presence! A loving husband, an adoring father and an extraordinary father-in-law, he always puts right before wrong, never mind if he has to stand tradition on its head.

Salman Khan as Avinash Kapoor
He may lie to win his love, but would die if so much as a tear escapes her eye. He’s charming, loving and good looking. No wonder, knowing him is to love him.

Rani Mukherjee as Malvika Talwar
She loves to paint. Loves to fight. Loves to love. Knows the difference between friendship and love and is convinced that love and marriage happen once in lifetime.

Hema Malini as Shobhana Kapoor
She loves and is loved by both the men in her life – husband and son. She may laughingly admit that both of them are “a total loss”; but her world revolves around them.

Om Puri as Balwant Kapoor

But Balwant (Om Puri), Balraj’s elder brother settled in rural Punjab with his family and his widowed sister-in-law objects to Balraj’s plans. Even Shobhna may not be with him this time.

Will Balraj be able to fulfill his plan?
Will he be successful in this test of love?
Will he prove to be a father (Baabul) rather than being a father-in-law?

The music launch of BAABUL

As a journalist, one has attended innumerable parties over the decades. You have sweet memories of some. Most of them are as forgettable as the potholes during monsoons.

The music launch of BAABUL on Thursday, 26th October, which coincided with the 50 years of B.R. Films, can easily rank amongst the Top 10 parties of all times. Surely, the event, chock-a-block with celebrities and the crème de la crème of the entertainment industry, was not one of those routine parties. In fact, it was the mother of all events! The music launch witnessed Dilip Kumar releasing the music, but before the honors, the principal cast of BAABUL [Big B, Hema Malini, Salman Khan, Rani Mukherji and John Abraham] walked the ramp, displaying the BAABUL look by designers such as Akbar of Gabbana, Neeta Lulla, Alvira Khan Agnihotri, Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Narendra Kumar.

That’s not all, the promos of the songs were screened to the elite gathering and must say, the music [Adesh Shrivastava] is indeed tuneful. The formal announcement of G.I.F.A. Awards, to be held in Malaysia in December [BAABUL will be premiered here], was also made on the occasion.

This is the first time I'm playing a courtesan, says Aish

Although the media is having a field day with the conspicuous absence of Abhishek Bachchan for the promotional appearances for Umrao Jaan, Aishwarya Rai is quick to jump to his defence. "He doesn't have free dates. He's busy shooting for his films, but director J P Dutta has already spoken with the producers of his films to give him dates to promote the film with us."

However Ash is in no mood to discuss pertinent issues involving the younger Bachchan and steers the conversation towards the film instead. "This is the first time I'm playing a courtesan and it has been an incredible journey for me," she says.

The film has been a learning experience for the actress. "It was very educational. I was revisiting a certain era of history and learning the nuances of mujras, shayaris and ghazals from those who are much so well-versed in the culture like J P saab, Shabanaji and Javedsaab. I came away enriched," says Aishwarya.

Does she feel a film depicting an unknown faded era will appeal to today's generation? "I myself belong to today's generation," says Aishwarya, "And I feel it's a wonderful way for us to remain culturally connected to our roots. It's through movies like these that we can appreciate and discover what we have."

How much did she draw from the old Umrao Jaan? "I have seen it several years ago as one of those Sunday movies we used to see on television. I remember it in terms of visuals because they were so strong and the songs and dances that were performed so beautifully by Rekhaji, but not in terms of content. I wanted to essay this character with a clean slate, so I didn't watch it again. I was totally fresh for J P Dutta's narrative and I made it very clear that I was here to deliver to his satisfaction as an actor. So there's no question of me having seen the old Umrao Jaan and making references to it."

Is she afraid of comparisons that will be drawn between Rekha and her? "I know that comparisons are already being made, especially by the media. I have played a character from the book as envisioned by J P saab. It's not the first time something has been remade. References to art or literature which are interpreted cinematographically are a creative geniuses' prerogative not a single person's perspective. But Rekhaji and I share a warm bond that goes beyond comparisons. I definitely want her to see the movie and as she has been an audience to most of my films before, I hope she watches my Umrao Jaan too," she says.

Diwali update 3: ‘Don’ holds, ‘Jaan-e-Mann’ steady

Business Talk With Taran Adarsh
Source: IndiaFM
With DON taking a head start from Day 1 and JAAN-E-MANN opening with dismal numbers, the opening weekend tilted in DON’s favor completely. With a solid Friday and Sunday [Saturday was weak due to Laxmi pooja], the distributors of DON were assured of reaching the safety zone. But JAAN-E-MANN was struggling to breathe due to a poor Friday, disastrous Saturday and fairly good Sunday.

Monday brought good news for JAAN-E-MANN. While DON reaped the maximum benefit of the Diwali holidays, JAAN-E-MANN also showed a gradual rise. However, the business hasn’t shown a big jump, but the collections are steady on the lower side. At Indore, for instance, the collections of JAAN-E-MANN on Monday were almost at par with Sunday. Even Tuesday was better than Friday and Saturday, which clearly indicates that the film is catching on slowly.

In Mumbai and Delhi-U.P. too, JAAN-E-MANN showed a steady rise on Monday and Tuesday, mainly at multiplexes. But that still doesn’t make it a safe proposition, since it has been sold for an astronomical prices. The collections got a boost on Wednesday [Idd], thanks to Salman’s popularity. Again, the much-needed jump was missing!

JAAN-E-MANN picked up dramatically in U.K. If the love triangle grossed a measly £ 18,000 on Friday, it showed an upswing on Monday [£ 40,000] as well as on Tuesday [£ 60,000]. Pranab Kapadia, the Business Head of Adlabs [U.K. distributor of JAAN-E-MANN], is confident that the all-round positive reports will help it consolidate its status in days to come.

However, JAAN-E-MANN isn’t as strong at comparatively smaller centres of India, while DON continued its smooth ride on Monday [slight drop], Tuesday [good] and Wednesday [steady].

Since a lot of money is riding on these two films, it remains to be seen how they perform in their second weekend. In terms of public feedback, JAAN-E-MANN enjoys better reports, but will it translate into rock-steady collections in its second week? As for DON, with a bountiful first week, one will be curious to watch its b.o. performance in its second week, since the general feedback isn’t favorable.

Yet, in all fairness, while DON looks like a safe proposition due to a strong initial [SRK’s star power coupled with Diwali and Idd holidays], JAAN-E-MANN will have to come up with magical figures to make its investors smile.

WRONG RELEASE PERIOD?

While everyone has a point of view vis-à-vis the dull opening of JAAN-E-MANN, a number of people are unanimous that had JAAN-E-MAAN released on Wednesday, 25th October [Idd], not before, the results would’ve been much, much better. A prominent Bengal distributor told this writer that Salman’s popularity with the masses and an Idd release would’ve ensured a better start for JAAN-E-MANN.

A similar opinion was echoed by Pranab Kapadia of Adlabs, U.K. as well as a well-known Delhi-U.P. exhibitor, when this writer spoke to them.

“Sanju is the real Munnabhai", Shahrukh

‘Munnabhai MBBS' director Rajkumar Hirani, at the beginning, selected Shah Rukh Khan for Munnabhai's role. However it couldn't work out as Shah Rukh was then in abroad for his back surgery. In a recent interview Shah Rukh said he loved the script very much but he had to give up the film because he could not have asked them to wait for him till his recovery.
Expressing his deep satisfaction on Sanjay Dutta's portrayal as Munnabhai, Shah Rukh said, “Sanju is the real Munnabhai. I genuinely think that Sanju is outstanding. There's this amazing and enduring big brotherly love in Sanju's Munnabhai, which I don't think I would have been able to bring to the table.”
Like ‘Munnabhai MBBS', its sequel ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai' also floored the Bollywood king.

John and Bipasha to hit a Goal?

The real life couple John-Bipasha have shared great onscreen chemistry in films like Jism and Madhoshi. But surprisingly ever since then they never appeared together in any film. Finally after a gap of two years audiences might get to see them together in Vivek Agnihotri's Goal.

The duo was offered some films before but they refused to do for their own reasons. Though she hasn’t read the entire script of Goal, Bipasha has had a narration of her part from the script. She is yet to sign on the dotted line but her response towards the film seems to be quite positive. She feels that Goal is a perfect film for her to come together with John. Being selective about her roles, Bipasha feels that she will work with John only if the project is special. In Goal she plays a Pakistani girl.

It may be recalled that Bipasha had refused some films starring John Abraham in lead role including Anurag Kashyup’s No Smoking.

DON has overtaken JAAN-E-MANN in U.K., U.S.A. and Australia

Overseas Boxoffice
Diwali Update 2: Not too bright a Diwali in Overseas!
Source: IndiaFM

The Overseas results are out! This Diwali hasn't been as fruitful for the film industry as the previous years. We are not speculating. We are not talking through our hat. We are not making ludicrous assertions. Reproduced below are the facts and figures that mirror the truth, whether you like it or not!

Amongst the two Diwali releases, DON has overtaken JAAN-E-MANN by leaps and bounds in the three major markets -- U.K., U.S.A. and Australia. Let's have a closer look at the response to the biggies in each market:

U.K.

DON has fetched an impressive start [£ 291,462 on 51 screens, average: 5,715], but when compared to other SRK starrers, like the recent KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA and VEER-ZAARA, the business is much lower [K.A.N.K. -- £ 749,243 on 60 screens, average: £ 12,487 and VEER-ZAARA -- £ 484,993 on 60 screens, average: £ 8,083]. Okay, you might argue that both K.A.N.K. and V.Z. were multi-starrers and romantic films [genre], which have an edge in Overseas. But DON is lower than the action-masala flick MAIN HOON NA [£ 322,290 on 41 screens, average: £ 7,861], which comes as a surprise. When compared to last year's Diwali release, DON is lower than GARAM MASALA as well [£ 292,033 on 37 screens, average: £ 7,893]. How do you explain that?

On the other hand, JAAN-E-MANN is a complete downer in U.K. [£ 65,574 on 42 screens, average: 1,561]. Last year, Salman's KYON KI… had opened in the Diwali week and we are reproducing its figures: £ 171,566 on 55 screens, average: £ 3,119. It's more than evident that JAAN-E-MANN is much poorer than KYON KI… Shockingly, JAAN-E-MANN is lower than last year's two other Diwali releases as well -- GARAM MASALA [£ 292,033 on 37 screens, average: £ 7,893] and SHAADI NO. 1 [£ 95,086 on 33 screens, average: £ 2,881]. In fact, if we were to go by screen average, then JAAN-E-MANN has performed much lower than Salman's much-delayed SHAADI KARKE PHAS GAYA YAAR [average: £ 2,151] and also PHIR MILENGE [average: £ 1,665], both disasters at the box-office. Going by screen average again, JAAN-E-MANN is Salman's second lowest opener since 1999, after SAAWAN - THE LOVE SEASON [average: £ 1,188].

U.S.A.

DON takes an excellent start here [$ 804,388 on 113 screens, average: $ 7,118], but the collections aren't commensurate with 'Brand SRK'. Again, comparing it with K.A.N.K. or V.Z. is debatable, but let's refresh your memory on the kind of openings the two SRK starrers fetched in U.S.A. [K.A.N.K. -- $ 1,351,786 on 64 screens, average: $ 21,122 and V.Z. -- $ 903,010 on 88 screens, average: $ 10,261]. Now let's see what MAIN HOON NA collected -- $ 704,651 on 79 screens, average: $ 8,919]. Clearly, the average of MAIN HOON NA is higher than DON.

JAAN-E-MANN is a terrible letdown in the U.S. as well [$ 210,000 on 66 screens, average: 3,182]. The Salman-Akshay starrer MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI had performed much better here -- $ 199,958 on 31 screens, average: $ 6,450. Need we elaborate more?

AUSTRALIA

DON has started with a bang [Australia $ 98,205 on 12 screens, average: Australia $ 8,184], but, again, the screen average is lower than K.A.N.K. [$ 21,365], LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI [$ 9,360], KRRISH [$ 10,057], FANAA [$ 13,890], RANG DE BASANTI [$ 10,171], SALAAM NAMASTE [$ 14,531], MANGAL PANDEY - THE RISING [$ 11,494] and VEER-ZAARA [$ 10,479].

JAAN-E-MANN has had a lukewarm start in Australia too [Australia $ 18,556 on 7 screens, average: Australia $ 2,651]. In terms of average, the Salman-Akshay combo is lower than ZINDA [$ 3,978], TAXI NO. 9211 [$ 4,413], HUMKO DEEWANA KAR GAYE [$ 3,573], DARNA ZAROORI HAI [$ 3,758], CHUP CHUP KE [$ 3,612], GOLMAAL - FUN UNLIMITED [$ 5,826] and OMKARA [$ 4,869], most of them starring actors who aren't as hot in this territory.

Weekend: October 20 - 22, 2006.

U.K. BOX-OFFICE

When I die, bury me face down so the whole world can kiss my ass, SRK

Shah Rukh Khan’s penchant for denim jackets is old. But the thought that comes with this one is new.

The patch on his jacket says: “When I die, bury me face down so the whole world can kiss my ass” Below the pithy statement, there is the trademark picture of Che Guevara and on the left, an image of human skulls. Is it the influence of The Motorcycle Diaries at work?

We spotted SRK wearing this particular jacket on Monday at an event at Khar.

The highest-paid star in Bollywood Hrithik Roshan

Hrithik Roshan clinches Rs 35-crore deal for three films with Adlabs, to become the highest paid star in Bollywood

It’s the hush-hush deal that’s become the talk of Bollywood. In a mega sign-up, bigger than any Diwali phataka, Hrithik Roshan has inked a three-film contract with the Anil Ambani-owned Adlabs for Rs 12 crore per film.

This straightaway catapults Hrithik to the top of the super-hero league, making him the highest paid star in India, way ahead of the three Khans who charge anything between Rs five to eight crore a film and Amitabh Bachchan who hovers at a more modest figure.

But that’s not the only reason why Bollywood is keeping a close eye on the deal. The Rs 35 crore contract will change two things fundamentally for the Hindi film industry: First, the transaction will be in all cheque and all white, giving greater impetus to corporatisation. Thus far, most stars accept remuneration in part cheque and part cash, while some like Aamir and Shah Rukh Khan accept part of their payment as distribution overflows from territories. For instance if Shah Rukh Khan’s films do well overseas, he might demand rights to the overseas territory as part of his package.

Second, and most importantly, this will shake up the entire pricing system in the film industry, sending star fees spiralling out of control, many fear. It is inevitable that other big stars will want similar monies, says a filmmaker who chooses to be anonymous till Hrithik's staggering price is made official. ``If true, this is a very unhealthy development. Hrithik is no doubt a fabulous and hard-working actor but star prices have constantly been the bane of Bollywood. Often more than 65 per cent of the budget for a film goes to the stars. Why, even a newcomer like Shiney Ahuja charges Rs 1 crore these days. Now God knows how medium-budget filmmakers will manage their finances," he laments.

While sources revealed that Hrithik's super-deal has been signed, sealed and delivered, both Rakesh Roshan and Pooja Shetty chose to be more cautious. "Negotiations are on," is all that Roshan senior would say while the director of Adlabs Films Ltd, when contacted, said: "Any news would be speculation till the official announcement was made."

Karan to start his next project!

Usually, Karan Johar takes a break of a few years before he embarks on his next project. KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI was released in 1998, KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM in 2001 and KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA in 2006. Of course, he produced KAL HO NAA HO and KAAL in between, but the directorial reins were handed over to independent directors.

But Karan has decided against giving a two/three-year gap between K.A.N.K. and his next film. “I’ve already started scripting my next,” Karan confides in me, “At the moment, I wouldn’t be able to reveal more than the fact that the film will start in 2007.”

That’s not the only project that’s keeping Karan occupied. For, Dharma Productions, his production company, will start two more films in 2007, to be directed by Soham [KAAL] and Tarun Mansukhani, respectively. “Most probably, we’ll see at least two releases next year,” Karan adds. Seems like Karan is getting back at film production with a vengeance!

Besides the above-mentioned three films, Karan will also commence the new season of KOFFEE WITH KARAN on television.

SRK signed a message, which said, "DON was here"!

Everyone's jumping on to the DON bandwagon after the film's release the world over. Well, that King Khan has a massive fan following is a fact and Kareena Kapoor couldn't agree more. She is one such ardent fan and cannot stop raving about him. And her much hyped song 'Yeh Mera Dil' has become a huge hit, especially overseas. "My friends and audience have absolutely loved the song. I love Shah Rukh and that was among the main reasons for me to agree to do the song. I would love to do an out-and-out romantic film with Shah Rukh." Kareena enthuses.

Shahrukh would obviously be more than happy to hear that. Interestingly this DON has captured many a hearts and lately it's been an inspiration for a range of designer wears. SRK unveiled the new DON collection by the leading international clothing brand, Louis Philippe, earlier this week. Producer Ritesh Sidhwani and director Farhan Akhtar accompanied him.

The brand had asked SRK to make a special appearance at a boutique in Mumbai to launch the signature collection of shirts, jackets and blazers, which he actually wore in DON. Needless to add, there was a stampede of sorts when the King Khan arrived wearing a smart jacket, which had a cheeky line (in true SRK style), "When I Die Bury Me Down So That The Whole World Can Kiss My Ass."

SRK signed a message on the walls of the boutique, which said, "DON was here"!

So now we have DON flaunting his style with great elan and panache. He isn't called King Khan just like that!

VIVAH marks Shahid and Amrita's fourth film together

Sooraj Barjatya's VIVAH brings back the quintessential Prem, but this time around it's Shahid Kapoor. Earlier it was Salman Khan in Rajshri's MAINE PYAR KIYA, HUM AAPKE HAIN KAUN and HUM SAATH SAATH HAI.

The new Prem has lately developed a passion for carom. He is quite a carom champ. He has honed his skills in playing the game with Anupam Kher on the sets of VIVAH. "We made a perfect pair," grins Shahid who loves playing the game with his make-up man and Amrita Rao's make-up man. Kher plays his father in the film. "We bond very well, Anupamji and I," Shahid confesses. "It felt great playing his son in the film. And I have really learnt a lot from him."

Incidentally VIVAH marks Shahid and Amrita's fourth film together. The lovable couple has done films like ISHQ-VISHQ, SHIKHAR and VAAH! LIFE HO TO AISI earlier.

Amrita plays Poonam, a small town middle class girl engaged to a Delhi guy (Shahid) in the film. As for her real life, speculations surrounding her marriage just don't seem to end. First it was the April fool joke on her wedding and impending retirement. Next came the astrologer's prediction that 2006 would be the year of her tryst with marriage. "It took me a while to battle my aunt's want to try and match me with the most eligible men," grins Amrita. "And I told the astrologer, I have no intentions of marriage," she adds. "And suddenly, after the shoot, it struck me one day that actually, it was a year of weddings for me with VIVAH releasing this year. In his own way, the astrologer was right."

So as far as her real life marriage is concerned, nothing is reckoning for the next five years for this dedicated actress.

VIVAH focuses on the concept of arranged marriage and the courtship period.

It releases on 10th November.

Kareena admits without any hesitation that if she even approached, she wouldn't do Priyanka's role in ‘DON '. As you know Priyanka played the female lead in the film opposite Shah Rukh Khan. In a recent interview she said she would love to do an out-and-out love story with Shah Rukh. “ I have watched ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya….' at least 150 times and keep playing it all the time on my DVD player. Sushmita will have to shell out Rs. 2.16 lakh for her Toyota Landcruiser

Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen will have to shell out Rs. 2.16 lakh for her Toyota Landcruiser. On Friday, Bombay High Court directed the star to pay the money to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as octroi duty within three weeks.
While deciding on the penalty for not paying the duty, which is calculated at ten times the octroi duty, the court gave some respite to Sushmita. A division bench of justices F.L. Rebello and Anoop Mohta asked the civic corporation to first issue a notice to the actress and give her a hearing in the matter. The exact amount of penalty will be decided after that. Sushmita will however have to deposit a bank guarantee of Rs. 10 lakh in favor of the civic body pending the hearing on the issue of penalty. The court's order came on a petition filed by Sushmita challenging the octroi and penalty which BMC had asked her to pay up for the vehicle. Sushmita had bought the vehicle last year. In August 2005, she received a BMC notice demanding octroi duty on the vehicle along with penalty for failure to pay it on time.

it was an absolute honour to play Umrao, Aishwarya

‘Umrao Jaan’ is set to release next month but Aishwarya Rai is the picture of measured serenity. One reason, perhaps, is that her performance in this JP Dutta film has already been lauded by those who’ve got a chance to see it. Ash herself says it was an absolute honour to play Umrao. “I saw the earlier ‘Umrao Jaan’ when I was very young, on television. I had never imagined I’d be playing that role. God has been kind to me,” she says, looking as flawless as ever.

She’s decided not to stress herself about the inevitable comparisons that will be drawn with Rekha. “I don’t even want to think about it as a comparison. Rekhaji and I share a different kind of bond. I remember long ago, when I had just started modelling and had no intention of entering films, I was out shopping with my mum when Rekhaji saw us and stopped her car in the middle of the road. She came up to us and told my mother, ‘Amma, she’s going to be a star someday.’ It was one of the most touching experiences of my life.” Talking about Umrao, Ash says, “Rekhaji has had the chance to play a mujrewali in other films too. But for me, in the current scenario when such films are not being made, to play a role like this is something else. More so because this role is set around her character and is not a one-off mujra thing.”

However, she says playing Amiran Ada’s character in ‘Umrao Jaan’, was an emotional experience as “I am an emotional person by nature. It is a role that has such an emotional range that one is bound to get affected by the character. It would touch anyone who’s sensitive. When JP told me you are so ‘Amiran’, it was a great compliment for me. Even earlier when my directors have told me that you are so ‘Shirley’ (in ‘Josh’) and so ‘Nandini’ (in ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’), I took that as a huge compliment.”

Did playing two diverse roles in different films like ‘Umrao Jaan’ and ‘Dhoom 2’ at the same time take a toll on her? “Not really,” she laughs. “It’s the demand of the character and one has to go with it. From playing Kiranjeet Ahluwalia in ‘Provoked’ to a warrior in ‘The Last Legion’ to a courtesan in ‘Umrao Jaan’, God has been kind. I am so thankful to people for having maintained that trust in me.” But since she’s working non-stop, does she ever find time for herself? “If you ask me whether I love what I am doing, the answer would be yes. And am I yearning for some time for myself? The answer is yes again. Even if I am doing three films at a time, I have no time left for myself.

No regrets, as this is a profession I have chosen myself. Sometimes I also feel bad about those films I have to turn down because of lack of time. I often wish I could get
some more time to spend with my loved ones — but I guess that’s the desire every other person in the world has,” she signs off wistfully.

Amitabh & Hema walking the ramp

Departing from the customary music launch ceremonies, a filmy album being released on Thursday night has been cleverly transformed into a fashion show. Ravi Chopra’s latest socio-emotional thriller ‘Babul’ proposes to have its lead cast — Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Salman Khan, Rani Mukherji and John Abraham — walking the ramp.

“The lead actors will be donning the same ‘Babul’ screen-look and will be wearing outfits designed by Neeta Lulla, Alvira Khan, Narendra Kumar Ahmed and Sabyasachi. Instead of the usual pre-recorded stock music, we shall be playing the music of ‘Babul’ scored by Aadesh Srivastava,” says Chopra.

The highlights will be two rocking fusion Bhangra hip-hop and rap songs sung by Big B himself and a classical number ‘Baawri Piya’ by Sonu Nigam.

“It’s a pleasure recording with Amitabh-ji because he has a terrific music sense and is well-versed with North Indian folk-tunes. With his instant grasping power he would even come up with creative vocal inputs. While shooting his ‘Come On Bhangra Paale’ number, he invited me to the sets to watch him swinging and would exclaim ‘faadi naaka’ — which means a ‘mind-blowing’ job,” says Aadesh.

Incidentally, Chopra’s last movie ‘Baghban’ with Amitabh, Hema and Salman was widely acclaimed for its hard-hitting social message.

Yash Chopra has a way with the ladies. He got even Kajol to drape herself in black chiffon at the DDLJ felicitation and even clip on a pair of chandelier diamond ear-rings. But there ended the reluctant star's concession to glamour. Not even for Yashji was she going to leave her glasses behind or visit the parlor to do up her hair. She did however behave like a demure lady as long as she was seated between Pam Chopra and Dilip Kumar. But the minute she was up on stage she let loose with unrestrained laughter especially when the Swiss musical trumpet was playing. Her uninhibited emotions were obviously infectious because even the usually propah Amitabh Bachchan cracked a smile and hugged her spontaneously on stage. That's the magic of Kajol. Right!

I see no reason why we shouldn't be teaming up in near future. When the script is right and the character is appropriate, I shall certainly approach him,” said Farhan.

Don leads, ‘Jaan-e-Mann’ trails

Business Talk With Taran Adarsh - IndiaFM
Diwali update 1: ‘Don leads, ‘Jaan-e-Mann’ trails

The opening weekend verdict was loud and clear on Friday itself. DON had fetched a good to excellent start [80%-90%], while JAAN-E-MANN, another biggie this Diwali, sent shock waves with a tepid start [25%-40%]. Those expecting the Salman-Akshay starrer to fetch a hurricane-like start were surely disappointed.

While the audience feedback to DON ranges from average to below average, JAAN-E-MANN enjoys better reports. A section of the industry feels that the business of JAAN-E-MANN would show an increase [good word of mouth] for this reason. Also, everyone’s hoping that JAAN-E-MANN would consolidate its position after Idd, since Salman is a major draw with a section of the movie-going audience.

Day 2 [Saturday] was weak for both the films, since Laxmi pooja affects the business of all releases. With most Hindus offering prayers on this day, the attendance at movieplexes takes a complete beating. This year was no exception. The collections of both DON and JAAN-E-MANN slided downwards practically everywhere. In fact, at some centres, the collections were as low as 15%-20%, which, frankly, didn’t come as a surprise.

Sunday went in favor of DON again, while JAAN-E-MANN did show an increase but it didn’t perform to its optimum capacity.

A section of the film industry feels that the pre-Diwali dull phase [on Friday] affected the prospects of JAAN-E-MANN. If one were to take this rationale seriously, then why did DON fetch a good start? A section is also of the opinion that the promotion of JAAN-E-MANN, although aggressive, didn’t have the required garmi to compel the moviegoers to rush to the nearby cinemas.

Meanwhile, the Amitabh Bachchan starrer GANGA [Bhojpuri] is faring very well in Uttar Pradesh, with several shows registering 100% collections.

Aishwarya has no Hollywood film lined up for this year

Actor Aishwarya Rai is back in India after a brief stint in Hollywood and she has some big banner Bollywood movies lined up.

Except for Last Legion and Provoked, Aishwarya has no Hollywood film lined up for release this year.

The only English script that she is ready to talk about is a Will Smith movie. And she is not talking about her other Hollywood ventures either like French remake Chaos with Meryl Streep and Singularity directed by Roland Joff.

However, both films are yet to take off the ground.

"There are quite a few scripts from abroad but I hope to be able to work with Will Smith. The script was great and it will be fun to work with him," Aishwarya said.

But there are quite a few Bollywood flicks lined up for Aishwarya including, Guru by Mani Ratnam, Jodha-Akbar by Ashutosh Gowatrikar and Sarkar 2 by Ram Gopal Varma.

Her forthcoming releases include, Umrao Jaan and Dhoom 2.

As for future Hollywood projects, Aishwarya said that like many other things in life, she would leave it for the time and the dates to decide.

"I really want time to decide. I don't know what will come my way. I will go through the scripts, will look at the dates and only then will sign newer movies," she said.

"I believe in the power of saying ‘no’. When I am not convinced about something. I simply say no," she added.

Talking about Umrao Jaan, Aishwarya said she avoided watching the original film when the movie was being made.

"Whenever there are remakes being made, I am not given to the temptation of watching the original as there could be some visual impression that could influence my performance. I like to keep away from emulation or repetition," she explained.

About her brand new look in Dhoom 2 Aishwarya said that she had never before essayed the role of a character like Sunheri.

"I think I have done lot of Indian characters, but playing a westernised character in Dhoom 2 was different," Aishwarya said, who also did her own stunts in the movie.

Hrithik & Aish have started training for Jodha Akbar

Hrithik and Aishwarya begin round 2 of dare-devilry, undergo rigorous horse-riding and fencing practice for Jodha Akbar

Barely have Hritihik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai finished with their dare-devil stunts for Dhoom 2, than the actors have started training for Ashutosh Gowariker's historical epic Jodha Akbar.

Hrithik is now busy learning to ride a horse and sword-fencing before he dons the garb of Emperor Akbar. He has been practicing how to get on a high horse and how to cross swords across the enemy line. Being his first costume drama, the actor wants to make sure he gets all the finer nuances right.

With this film, Hrithik gets a chance to play a benevolent Mughal emperor who dared to love and marry a Hindu princess. Says Hrithik, "It will have war, horses and swords. I will play a very young and virile Akbar. It's a very real drama, not theatrical at all. It's my first costume drama because I will wear a costume. But that doesn't mean it will be excessively dramatic. I have faith in Ashutosh Gowariker's abilities. His intelligent perspective during his narrative convinced me he can never make an actor look bad. He believes in the real and tries to capture the real. He never constrains the actor, but allows them to be natural on camera."

For Aishwarya, horse-riding and fencing are considerably easier. She learnt both for the role of the fiery Roman rebel-queen Mira in Doug Lefler's The Last Legion which opens in January 2007 all over the world. However Ash is also expected to hone her skills on the horse and with the sword before she joins Gowariker's for the long schedule in Rajasthan.

"There's some strange affinity between me and period films, first Devdas, then Umrao Jaan, and now Jodha Akbar," says Ash.

Interestingly, the Hrithik-Aishwarya pair will be seen in a contemporary conniving and wicked avatar in Yashraj Films' Dhoom 2 next month. Wouldn't the cultural contrast between the modern actioner and the Mughal drama be excessive? "Not at all! I'm not the least worried about their images," says Gowariker.

"I want to go back to my lean physique, probably leaner than my Khiladi phase," Akshay says

Akshay Kumar is facing a dilemma. The actor is bored with his look and has decided to go in for something different. Working towards this, the actor is currently working out at the gym to lose weight and is also in talks with his stylist friends for this new look.

"I am bored, and if I am bored with my face, imagine what the audiences must be facing?" says Akshay Kumar. Apparently, he wants to get back to the lean look; the way he looked when he entered the industry. "I want to go back to my lean physique, probably leaner than my Khiladi phase," he says.

The actor had put on weight in the last two years and wants to put a check on it before it gets out of control. "I am basically a fit guy, but sometimes you put on weight. I have been seeing myself on screen and I have realised that I need to shed six to eight kilos of weight. There after I will look much fitter and it will be refreshing for my audiences also," he says.

Akshay has been working out regularly at Marriot gymnasium and also at his private gym. "I think we all need to check our diet. I have been extremely cautious about my diet and also I keep a check on what my son, Aarav eats," he says.

But why did he suddenly decide to go on this weight loss plan? "If you follow the trend in Hollywood, you would see that most of the actors are changing their hair style and their look. I think some of the actors in Bollywood are also following the trend. I have decided to go for a complete make-over, and I am talking to couple of my stylist friends also. I am not too happy with what they have been suggesting. I want to be sure about the make-over before I get down to doing it," he says.

So when does one get to see this 'new' look? "By January 2007, you'll find me with certain changes. I am taking off during Christmas, so that I can work on it," he says.

In a recent interview, Kareena regretted as after ‘Refugee' they haven't been paired up. “We make a great on-screen pair, yet I have not been signed for any film with him. I don't know why,” said Kareena.
She said Abhishek a great guy. “I love Abhishek from the bottom of my heart. Whatever happened was unfortunate, but these things happen.”
”Some relationship will always be cherished. We faced the camera for the first time together and that bond can never be broken. It will be something to tell my children about when they watch ‘Refugee',” gushed Kareena.

"we're happy together,” said Vikram

Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt is very happy with his girlfriend, actress Aamisha Patel. Aamisha and Vikram have been dating for a long time, and in spite of all false rumours about their break-up, the fact is that they are going very strong. "Life is great. The two of us have gone through the grind. Now we're happy together,” said Vikram in a recent interview.
However in the question of marriage, Vikram said no chance in near future. “Not for a long time. Amisha has her own ambitions, and I don't want to come in the way. She wants to pursue her career. And I'm happy to just move back and give her that space. When you're in a permanent relationship, the ground rules have to be made very clear. Amisha and I were sure we'd never come in each other's way. I'd never want her to compromise on her values or vision," said Vikram.
To Vikram, the years of his togetherness with Aamisha is so sweet to cherish. “Aamisha is wonderful. She showers me with so much attention that I never feel we aren't married. Amisha and I are for keeps. People may keep digging into our lives to sniff out a separation. But sorry, we aren't obliging," gushed Vikram.

2006 has been a learning year for Hrithik

2006 has been a learning year for Hrithik. First he learnt some martial arts for Krrish, then roller blading, snow boarding and sand surfing for Dhoom 2 and now he is learning horse riding and sword fighting lessons for his next movie to go on floors – Akbar Jodha. His riding lessons start every morning at 7 am at the Mahalaxmi racecourse. And on one such training day, Hrithik fell down from the horse while the animal was still in motion. Since his leg was stuck up, he was pulled for a considerable distance by the horse, which gave him some deep wounds on his body and bruises on his arms.

But a true blue (super)hero that he is, Hrithik did not go back home to nurse his wounds but bounced back and continued with his horse-riding lessons. In fact he didn’t even skip his sword-fighting lessons in the evening.

That calls for his professionalism.

It's a dream house. And my parents have shifted with me, Amrita

Amrita Arora who was a resident of Andheri had now moved to Bandra. "It's a dream house. And my parents have shifted with me. Everyone dreams of owning a house that would be just perfect. I've reached that dream, I guess."

With the shift of residence she's now a stone's away from her sister Malaika. "So we are all at a shouting distance from one another," Amrita shouts from Prague. She's extremely excited about having signed on a remake of the 1973 hit Victoria 203 where she gets to play Saira Banu's role. "I'm very excited because a lot of people feel I resemble Saira Banuji. In half the film I get to masquerade as a man. And yes I'll be doing Sairaji's sizzling towel dance in Victoria 203," laughs Amrita.

In the original Saira Banu had brought the house down doing the sensuous dance number Thodasa Thehro. It remains to be seen whether the re-makers – producer Kamal Sadanah and director Ananth Mahadevan retain the original Lata Mangeshkar track.

After Priyanka Chopra in Don and Aishwarya Rai in Umrao Jaan who have been given the thankless task of re-doing roles immortalized by Zeenat Aman and Rekha, respectively, it's petite Amrita's turn to do a Saira Banu. "Please don't scare me. Comparisons are so paralyzing."

Tanushree in Raj Kanwar’s film Raqeeb

Tanushree Dutta is known for her cinematic falls. No, we are not talking about the rise or fall of her films but the number of times she has fell down while shooting or on her way for shooting. She slipped on her high heels and fell flat on the floor while shooting for Good Boy Bad Boy and once she also had a fall on the airport while leaving for Dubai for shooting an item number in 36 China Town.

And now she pulled her hat trick fall while shooting for Raj Kanwar’s film Raqeeb. The unit was shooting an action sequence at the Elphistone College and as per the scene she had to fall in a small ditch and roll sideways. There were cushions in the ditch to make things safer. But as Tanushree ran, she slipped on the mud just before the ditch and landed into the ditch with her head in and legs up. And as she somersaulted her costars Rahul Khanna and Sharman Joshi couldn’t help laughing.

The unit subsequently got serious when they felt that Tanushree was injured. But she escaped with minor injuries. However it took her five minutes to realize that she was fine. Rahul and Sharman later watched her somersault on the monitor and continued laughing much to Tanushree’s embarrassment.

Tanushree sure seems to be going the Humpty Dumpty way.

Shahrukh talk to Rajeev Masand for CNN IBN: Live

He is one of India's biggest stars, makes more money per film than most of us do in a lifetime and his popularity is virtually unmatched. No prize for guessing, the star is of course Shah Rukh Khan.

Rajeev Masand: I have to ask you first, where has your beard gone?

Shah Rukh Khan: The beard was there because of my role in the film Chak de India. I just finished shooting for it, so it’s gone now.

Rajeev Masand: Was it bothersome. Were the kids complaining?

Shah Rukh Khan: My daughter did not like it. In fact some other girls, too, said that it pricks when I kiss them.

Rajeev Masand: Not many people know this but the Munnabhai films were conceived with you in mind. Also the first film Munnabhai MBBS was a film in which you even collaborated with some of the writing portions. In fact you have been very graciously saying that you would not have done as good a job as Sanjay Dutt did in the two films. What did you think about the second Munnabhai film that did so well recently?

Shah Rukh Khan: I haven’t seen it but my wife and kids have seen it twice and they loved it. To be honest, I wasn’t in town when the first Munnabhai came out. My family went to see the film because they knew that I was extremely keen on watching it.

Raju Hirani’s simplicity of storytelling is the most wonderful thing about the film. In fact I loved the title of the film when I heard it. Vidhu Vinod Chopra had come to me and he was extremely passionate to make the film but I had to undergo a surgery at that time.

I had to give up the film because I could not have asked them to wait for me till I recover. They were not my friends at that point of time. Now of course they are best buddies but I could not really ask them to wait for me till I recover.

I did put on hold other projects and asked Yash (Johar), Farah (Khan) and Aziz (Mirza) to wait. But I could not have asked Raju Hirani to do the same. He was embarking on his very first film and I could not hold him back for one-and-half years just because I was undergoing a surgery.

They went ahead and made it. Later on when I saw it, I felt that I could not have done a better job. I really felt that I would not have been able to do even 10 per cent of what Sanju has done. I think Sanjay Dutt is the real Munnabhai.

I am glad that I participated in the film in such a way that I may take the credit of giving the Indian film industry a character like Munnabhai by not doing it.

I genuinely think that Sanju is outstanding. There is this amazing and enduring big brotherly love in Sanju’s Munnabhai, which I don’t think I would have been able to bring to the table.

Rajeev Masand: You of course have chosen to do a lot less work than you used to do many years ago. I am guessing that allows you to have little more time for yourself?

Shah Rukh Khan: Not really. That wasn’t the case. I just recovered from my surgery and am much better now. But post-surgery for about two-years, I didn’t feel good at all.

I don’t want to crib about injuries that have happened but till about May this year I was in a bad state physically. I used to feel tired and my back used to hurt if I sat for a bit. After doing a dance sequence I used to get tired and it would pain. Even during the shooting of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna I was extremely unwell.

Then later on during May, when I was in Malaysia, I started feeling better. And for the last two-three months I have been feeling extremely better than before.

During the phase starting from Paheli, Main Hoon Na, Kal Ho Naa Ho till now, I have been unwell and did work just because I was supposed to.

Since May I have been working round the clock. I finished KANK, Don, and now we are almost done with Chak De. I really want to work like I used to about three years ago. My back is much better now.

Rajeev Masand: So you really like to be working all the time.

Shah Rukh Khan: I don’t like anything better than that. There is no alternative to work. I find nothing nicer than working. Bhatt saab tells me that I am a workaholic. If I don’t work I get a headache and I feel depressed. I like to work round the clock all the time.

Rajeev Masand: Do you like watching films as much as you like making them?

Shah Rukh Khan: If I can watch them alone quietly it’s great. I get time in my car so I put a movie in my laptop and watch it. But I am not much of a social viewer. I don’t like to go out in a public place and watch a film. I watch my own films only once.

On some rare occasions I do go to cinema theatres abroad. But if you really ask me I would rather watch a film on DVD all alone in the dark environs of my car or my home.

Rajeev Masand: So, what was the last film you watched on a DVD?

Shah Rukh Khan: I think the last one I watched was Rang de Basanti. Before that I watched Krrish in a cinema theatre. I have been watching some English dramas of late. I recently watched Murder One and Prison Break.

Rajeev Masand: When was the last time you got into a fight?

Shah Rukh Khan: I don’t fight with anyone. I haven’t gotten into a fight for a long time really.

Rajeev Masand: When was the last time you wanted to punch someone?

Shah Rukh Khan: I will wait till I hear your review of Don. I might want to punch you, who knows?

Rajeev Masand: What is the worst piece of professional advice that someone has given you?

Shah Rukh Khan: It has varied. I don’t know if it’s good or bad but a dear friend of mine Aziz (Mirza) asked me not to do Don. I was also told to cut my hair and to change my name because someone said that there couldn’t be a movie star by the name of Shah Rukh Khan.

I have been told that I speak too fast, I was told by everybody not to do a negative role. And yet I did films like Darr and Baazigar which so many stars had left.

Rajeev Masand: Can you imagine what your career would have been had you not done films like Darr, Baazigar and Anjam.

Shah Rukh Khan: My career would have been nothing if I had not done those films. Those films not only did well but they made me commercially viable as well. It made me unpredictable as an actor and I still live on that unpredictability. The character that I played in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna may not go down well with a lot of people. But somewhere down the line people will see you as this extremely unpredictable guy who can say or do anything.

Today, when I play a Don nobody is turning around saying Shah Rukh is doing a negative role. It has been accepted now. So it has given me a certain edge above others.

Rajeev Masand: What is the most odd piece of gossip that you have heard about yourself?

Shah Rukh Khan: I don’t know if its odd any longer. People think that I’m a gay. Recently somebody asked me if I’m still in touch with my feminine side. They ask me why did I do the Lux ad and things like that. They are very sweet about it but I know where they are heading. I think there is a feminine side to me, as people like to assume. This might rank as their top most gossip.

Then there was this gossip that I love fair women. And that’s why I don’t cheat on my family at home. I go abroad and am seen with fair ladies. Then there was this about my house that I have no windows at home because I want to make sure that nobody sees me. And many more such things have been said about me. This just keeps going on and on.

Rajeev Masand: Do you think that money can buy happiness?

Shah Rukh Khan: It makes it easier to get happiness. I do believe in a material world to a certain extent. I think material happiness is quite an important step before you look for spiritual happiness. There are people who think the other way round. They might also be right. But in the kind of education and the world where I have grown up, and we all are growing up, a certain level of consumerism become a reality.

I am not saying that it’s a dog-eat-dog or a really dangerous world out there. But the way you cannot deny something like ‘North Korea has tested a nuclear weapon,’ you also cannot belie the fact that materialism is the order of the day.

You can’t close your eyes or hide your face like an ostrich. In this world you need to have certain amount of comfort. What was luxury once has today become basic necessity.

There was a time when a car was considered a luxury; a second television was a big no-no. But today you need to have two sets of televisions. I think it is okay to have a certain amount of material comfort. Beyond that, emotional happiness will only come if you re honest, clear and in love with your near and dear ones.

Rajeev Masand: You are known to be a gizmo freak. What is the last toy that you purchased?

Shah Rukh Khan: I am waiting for the Playstation three to come up. I like Playstation. I am not a fan of an X-BOX 360, but Playstation is something that I am eagerly waiting for. It’s coming out in November, so either on my birthday or my son’s birthday we might have an excuse to buy it as a gift for either of us. If my wife doesn’t allow me to buy it for my son, he will buy it for me.

Rajeev Masand: Let’s talk a little about your mobile manners. How long do you take before you respond to a text message that someone sends to you?

Shah Rukh Khan: I try not to open an SMS when I know that there is nothing worthwhile that I can reply to. I get lots of them. But I only reply if there is something important that I have to say.

I hardly make any calls and keep my phone switched off most of the times. If I know that I can’t offer anything in return for a question or a request I don’t reply back.

Most of the people or at least the ones in my office understand this. If I don’t reply back they would know that I’m not being ill mannered or indifferent. They know I will reply when I have an answer to what they have asked.

Rajeev Masand: Is there anybody whose call you always take?

Shah Rukh Khan: Yes, there are about four or five people whose calls are the ones that I always take. My household calls, my son’s calls and the ones from few of my friends are the ones that I can never ignore.

Rajeev Masand: Is there anybody who is on your speed dial list?

Shah Rukh Khan: No, I find it too slow. Most of the people that I regularly call are there in my redial list and I don’t need to do much to call them.

Rajeev Masand: Do you ever worry about your mobile bill?

Shah Rukh Khan: No, I don’t and that is something really wrong. Even my office tells me that I don’t care about my phone bill.

I do have an international number but I take my India phone abroad and use it there. I feel a little at home with my own number. I hardly care about the bill, which is a wrong thing really.

Rajeev Masand: Do you even look at your mobile bill?

Shah Rukh Khan: No, the office does that for me.

Rajeev Masand: Let’s talk about you as a father and know more about your kids. You were learning guitar with your son. Tell me how are the guitar lessons going on?

Shah Rukh Khan: I gave it up. There is this wonderful guitar teacher Mr Bisma, an old gentleman who has been teaching me. He is an expert guitarist and one of the best guitar teachers in the country but even he could not teach me. I could only learn some notes.

I can play the Godfather theme and also Happy Birthday To You. It’s good because in a lot of films I have to hold the guitar, so now at least I know how to hold it properly.

I have an Alhambra and some really nice guitars at home but I don’t use them. My son is still learning how to play them. Hopefully when the need arises, he will help me. The basic reason why I learnt guitar was because I wanted to play it and sing along to impress all the women in the world. It’s a fantasy that men generally have when they are 18. I will be 41 in November, so I am just hoping that few years down the line I will get my son to play the guitar from the back and I will just strum the strings. He is doing much better than me.

Rajeev Masand: So ironic that you say this because in KANK your son was playing the violin and you were violently opposed to it.

Shah Rukh Khan: Yes, but that was just a character. I think a musical instrument is a must for every child. I could have been a better artist if I had learnt a little bit about music. I think I am just on the threshold of greatness because I don’t know music.

Rajeev Masand: But it’s never too late to learn anything.

Shah Rukh Khan: Yes, but then you don’t get enough time, you need to take two-three years off to learn something like this. My friend Juhi (Chawla) learns music and she practices for about four-five hours a day. That is something that I can’t do.

She sings wonderfully. I haven’t seen her perform but I just heard her while I was entering her house with my kids. After listening to her I felt that she is a wonderful singer.

Rajeev Masand: What works better with the kids? A yelling or pasting?

Shah Rukh Khan: I never yell at kids. I just hug them hard and threaten them not to do something again. I think the yelling part should be left to the moms. Moms yell, fathers must laugh it off.

Kids are closer to their moms, so you need to be nice to them to win them over. Whenever mom yells, I quickly move in and gain some brownie points by being kind to them. I would never be aggressive with a woman or a little child. I would rather die before I raise hand on a little kid or a lady.

Rajeev Masand: For what subjects do your kids come to you for help?

Shah Rukh Khan: I teach them Hindi. I am really very keen on teaching them the language because kids these days are weak at it. Everything has become anglicised today. So, I make it a point to teach them. I can help them with Math only till fifth standard because after that I was no good at it. I was very good with Sciences till about eighth standard. I teach them as and when they need me. But I make it a point to teach them Math and Hindi.

Rajeev Masand: Finally, why do you think it is the best thing for your kids to have a movie star dad?

Shah Rukh Khan: They get a good amount of home videos to watch. If you really ask me, the only fear I have is if I would be able to see my children live out of the shadow of my name.

When you become an actor you get a name undeservingly bigger than the work that you do. Your face is all over the hoardings, everyone talks about you and people refer to you as ‘King Khan’ and ‘Baadshah of Bollywood’. I would want my children to grow up and do what they wish to in a field that they choose to step in. They should not have to use the shadow of their father’s name. I think that is a bit of a downer for a movie star’s children.

I only wish if my son grows up to become a chemical engineer, he should be reckoned as Aryan Khan, the engineer and not as Shah Rukh Khan’s son.

If my daughter becomes a dentist tomorrow she should not be known for being ‘Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter who became a dentist.’ Whatever job they do, they should never shine in a reflected glory. They should be able to find their own feat. Even if they become movie stars, I hope they don’t have to be launched by anybody.

Rajeev Masand: Best of luck. We hope that you always remain a good father and an excellent movie star. Thank you so much for talking to us.

The sparkling point: Word on next Diwali, Id movie attractions

Word is already out on next year’s Diwali and Id movie attractions, reports R V Jha

Already, the dream factory’s wheels are spinning for the next festive season’s big, bright and bouncy movie attractions — geared towards enticing family audiences to rush to the Inoxes, Galaxies and the Eroses.

Word is already out that next year around October 2, the Ramzan Id movie bonanza will be Ashutosh Gowariker’s Jodha Akbar. And on November 17, for Diwali dhamaka, there will be Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya — entertainment guaranteed to sparkle during the seasons of sheer khorma and then phuljadis.

This year, as is the frequent occurrence, Id and Diwali have come on dates close to each other. Next year, it will be different, but trade soothsayers are insistent that the festivals will prove to be great boosters for the commercial stakes of both Jodha Akbar and Saawariya, each helmed by directors known for lavishing attention on detail and marketing their products with a certain savoir faire.

According to trade pin Vikas Mohan, “Every filmmaker in India would like to cash in on the spending capactity of the audience during the festival days. During Diwali, wallets are fatter because of the Diwali bonus. On Id, the devout like to relax after a month-long regimen of rozas. On a modest estimate, the ticket sales during these festivals goes up by 200 per cent.”

Few filmmakers differ from this line of thinking. But Ram Gopal Varma argues, “Look, I have never believed in lucky or unlucky days for my film’s release. I also don’t believe that Diwali and Id time ensure hits. If that was so, then all of us would wait for the festival day. If your film clicks with the audience — whatever the month, week or day it may be — that’s what counts.”

On the other hand, Rakesh Roshan goes with the traditional trade belief though, “I have often released my films, like say Karan Arjun (1995) and Kaho Naa…Pyar Hai ( 2000) at the beginning of the year, when the audience is anticipating something totally fresh and entertaining. Yet, there’s no denying that the Diwali and Id periods are the most auspicious time for movie releases. Before that, there is a calm before the box office storm literally.”

After Diwali-Ramzan Id, the most audience-friendly days happen to be the summer school vacations, from April-end to early June. Taran Adarsh, trade pundit, agrees and points out that the holiday upsurge is similar to that of Hollywood’s, which actually has a glut of movies during the summer campus breaks.

The stakes during the Diwali-Id week releases are extremely high. This year with Don and Jaan-e-mann in the fray, the stakes are said to be in the vicinity of Rs 85 crore. The immediate word is that Don has fetched terrific initial box office receipts.

Last year it was Garam Masala that had benefited from the Diwali-Id rush. Inevitably, there are exceptions to the “festive mood” rule. For instance, producer Vashu Bhagnani has invariably scored flops with his Diwali releases: Deewanapan (2001), Jeena Sirf Mere Liye (2002) and Shaadi No. 1 (2005). Other recent festival time no- nos have been Pinjar, Inteha, Naach, Raja Bhaiyya ( 2004) and Kyun Ki (2005).

Never mind. Because the kind of record smashing collections recorded for other films, released during the Diwali-Id week, have kept the trade ticking with hope. The biggest festival week winners have been Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Dil To Paagal Hai (1997), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999), Mohabbatein (2000) and Veer-Zaara (2004).

Of late, to further tap the overseas market further, film makers have been looking at the Easter week-end and the summer holidays. But since the largest slice of the cake continues to be the domestic market, the mantra remains — there’s no business like show business… at home.

Big Ones 2007

There will be the surprise packets and super hits which no crystal ball gazer can predict. At the same time, there are films which the movie industry will monitor intently. Besides Jodha Akbar and Saawariya the sights will be on:

Tara Rum Pum: director Siddharth Anand (*ing Saif Ali Khan, Rani Mukherji)
Chak de India: director Shimit Amin(*ing Shah Rukh Khan)
Eklavya: director Vidhu Vinod Chopra (*ing Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Vidya Balan)

DHOOM 2 - Music Review

Dhoom Machale was the biggest chartbuster of 2004 and the track was the year’s largest selling ringtone as well. Dhoom 2 – the sequel of the 2004 action adventure is arriving. Undoubtedly the movie promises to be bigger and better! So does the music. Two years back music director Pritam Chakravarthy gave his first independent hit in the form of Dhoom and came in the top league. Ever since then he has been riding high. Life comes a full circle for Pritam with the sequel of Dhoom. Expectations are inevitably rife. What’s interesting is that lyricist Sameer enters the Yashraj camp with this film. What’s the result? Read on…

‘Crazy Kiya Re’ marks an apt start to the album and is an instantly catchy number. Opening with an English chorus, Sunidhi Chauhan quickly takes over and is at her vivacious best. ‘Sexy lady on the floor, keeps you coming back for more’ sings the chorus and rightly so as the sensuous voice of Sunidhi makes you come back to this track for more. Pritam’s music is familiarly unsophisticated and yet amazingly appealing. It won’t take you long to get on the dance floor and groove your leg. There’s nothing exceptional about Sameer’s lyrics with the usual ‘chori kiya, jhoome jiya, crazy kiya’ rhymes but then who’s complaining. Crazy Kiya Re isn’t a lyric based song but makes you crazy with its zippy music and zany singing. You love it in its entirety and think that it can’t get better until you come across the remix.

Agreed that the ‘Remix version’ doesn’t serve anything new from the original apart from the regular disc scratching breaks, added rapping and a faster pace. But then Dhoom is all about pace and that essentially acts as the USP of this track. Remixed by Bunty Rajput (who was also the song programmer of Dhoom), what sets the remix apart is the accelerator vroom reverberation just before the end of every verse, thereby giving it a speeding effect.

Next comes the much awaited title track of the Dhoom sequel. Pritam always quoted that the pressure was immense on him to recreate the magic of Dhoom. To maintain the trademark touch from the original version and yet create a new identity for the title track wasn’t an easy task. Moreover while the original was a female track, he primarily hands over the mike to a male singer this time.

The choice of Vishal Dadlani as the lead singer of ‘Dhoom Again’ comes as a surprise. Not because Vishal is a composer himself but because the husky and deep-base voice that he is known for (‘Sholo Si’ in Shabd or ‘Mama Told Me’ in Ek Ajnabee) isn’t used to that effect. Instead Pritam makes him sing rather clear-throated. Dominique Cerejo gives him good company as the female voice.

Starting with a water gushing sound and an extended percussion, the base tune of ‘Dhoom Again’ is same as the original. However, while in the prequel there were two separate versions of the title track (in Hindi and English), this time there is only one version and the entire song is composed with English lyrics. Dhoom Machale are the only Hindi words in the otherwise English song written by Asif Ali Beg. Perhaps that’s intentional to give an international feel to the music and the movie. The track is a little too heavy on percussions but perhaps the effect might show onscreen.

But the major highlight of the song arrives in the form of a whistling interlude (the one heard in the opening note of the trailers) which in most probability will be the theme piece played in the background score at regular intervals. This interlude is repeated in the song after each stanza with the whistling switching to synthesizer notes. Undoubtedly this would be the most popular whistle on everybody’s lips and the theme piece promises to be a popular ringtone on mobile sets, once the music is out.

The theme piece that you loved in Dhoom Again opens ‘Dil Laga Na’ with new instrumentation. Designed as a climax song with all the five lead players of the film coming together, this one is a complete situational track. Sukhbir, Soham Chakrabarthy, Jolly Mukherjee, Mahalaxmi Iyer and Suzanne form the voices of the five characters. Sukhbir adds a bhangra flavour, Mahalaxmi Iyer brings in the mushy lovey dovey touch, Jolly Mukherjee (the singer from late 80s who started with Chandni O Meri Chandni makes a comeback to the Yashraj camp) sings to a hoarse effect and Suzzane adds fire playing the sizzling seductress’ part. Soham Chakrabarthy is overshadowed in the crowd. The Dhoom Machale theme from the prequel constantly plays in the background. More than audible appeal this song would be having visual appeal.

Sonu Nigam in his saccharine sweet vocals takes charge of ‘My Name is Ali’. The setting (NOT the tune) instantly reminds of Dilbara with Uday Chopra trying to woo the lady even here. The song could well have been titled ‘Excuse Me Too Please’ for that is the line repeated for the maximum number of times in the track. But why does Sonu pronounce ‘Excuse’ as ‘Esscuse’? Is it intentional with respect to Uday’s tapoori characterization? Much has been talked about Bipasha’s singing debut with this track but she just chips in for two words in the song and not singing.

This track won’t get on you instantly as compared to the other catchy tracks of the film but with a couple of listening the menthol cool effect of the song will seep in your senses. In fact this menthol-cool feel and Sonu’s honey-soaked singing reminds one of Kishore Kumar’s melodious rendition of ‘O Hansini’ from Zahreela Insaan. Again the feel is similar, not the tune!

String instrumentation opens the final track ‘Touch Me’. This peppy and racy track with a carnival feel sets you to the foot-tapping mode. Alisha gives her patented sensual fluctuations to her voice while KK adds his trademark touch. Their singing chemistry is flawless. Pritam synthesizes the flute to a pleasing effect. Like the previous track, this one too grows on you with multiple listening.

Despite being distinctly different from each other, there is a certain common vibe amongst all the tracks of Dhoom 2 by which you can identify them amongst a lot. Now the big question – does it surpass the original? We would rather say that Dhoom 2 leaves a mark of its own.

Better try to spend sleepless nights

Sexy gals look sexier when they sleep less. We didn't know it that less of sleep can make someone look so lovely. But our Bollywood beauties can pull off anything. Over the weekend we heard Aamisha Patel saying, “I am so tired and jet-lagged that I can drop any minute now. I just got back from New York where I'd gone for a fashion show. All I need now is lots of sleep.” But with that pink glow she was flaunting, we thought she was just back from a long vacation.
Another lady who took us by surprise was Sameera Reddy, looking stunning in spite of being terrible jet-lagged. Well, you gals, who want to look sexy, better try to spend sleepless nights. Right!

No time to love, Sameera

Bollywood hottie Sameera Reddy has huge penchant for knitting. “I find knitting to be the best stress-buster. I can knit a full sweater in just a day,” says Sameera.
While you take your own sweet time trying to accept this Bollywood bombshell doing what is otherwise considered the pastime of a housewife, the lady springs yet another one. “Earlier, I used to really get bugged when I was a linked to my co-stars, but now, my worry is different. I get worried if I am not linked with them and I guess I can see the fun part of it all now,” she says.
And a hearty laugh is all we get after mentioning the Sameera-Vivek Oberoi link up. “I read it one fine morning and laughed a lot, that's just about it. Otherwise, my situation is pretty simple and easy to explain; earlier there was no guy to love, now there is no time to love!” she adds.

First sexy, now gay icon!

First sexy, now gay icon! Abhishek Bachchan is sure on a high. He has been selected Asia 's sexiest man for the year 2006, recently. But the ‘sexy' guy however doesn't like to be called sexy. “I don't take these appellations seriously. My main job is to be an actor. And all these wonderful appellations come from that job. If I wasn't an actor I'd be neither considered sexy nor a gay icon. I concentrate on my job as an actor. The rest I treat as bonuses given to me for doing my job seriously. My responsibility is towards my audience and entertaining them. ‘Sexy' and ‘gay icon' are terms of affection that are here today, will be gone tomorrow,” says Abhishek.
Even he doesn't know what the sexy means. “I don't know what it means,” said Bachchan Junior in a recent interview. When said maybe it means people want to have sex with him, Abhishek laughed in embarrassment. “I don't think so. I really don't know what being sexy is,” he said.

DON - The Chase Begins Again

FILM: Don
DIRECTOR: Farhan Akhtar
ACTORS: Shah Rukh Khan, Boman Irani, Priyanka Chopra
Growing up in a video generation that I did, with a VCR and battered VHS tapes for a lone source of entertainment, there were two movies that I got to watch in pieces and bits over quite a few years. One was Gandhi. The other, curiously enough, Chandra Barot's Don: both great films in their own right.

But that doesn't entirely explain my compulsive behaviour. It's just that when every video rented from the local library was a beat-up, pirated copy, the two 'original' cassettes we had at home served as head-cleaners. Every time it became impossible to tell anything on the TV screen, we'd play one of the two videos for a few minutes, clean up the junk inside the player, pamper and prepare the machine for the scrap we were to insert again.

The Don video, I clearly remember, was always cued to the same scene, the most powerful one: The real Don is already dead; Vijay, a look-alike moll, who poses as Don in the Mafiosi group, has lost his mentor, the Interpol cop who'd planted him without anyone's knowledge. The fake Don finds himself behind bars trying to explain his true identity to policemen on the other side of the lock-up. The police don't believe him. His mates, gang members standing beside, do: It's a giveaway; they could never imagine a vulnerable, nervous Don, no matter what. You can sense the chilling predicament of a protagonist, who, by a cruel accident of circumstances, can neither stay in, nor get out.

The same sequence takes place in this version. Somehow, the simple, emotional connect gets lost in the slickness of moments, unlike Akhtar's previous, superior works (Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya). That may be a key to differentiate between the first and the latest Don. The former was a character-driven, intimate film, albeit a fairly slick thriller, mostly for its screenplay. The latter is a most updated Indian film of the action genre that always calculably concentrates on the new twists, and the turning points, both of which mostly seem cleverer than contrived; ably fitting pieces, the known characters, into a new domino (Boman Irani's studiedly calm DCP D'Silva who enrolls Shah Rukh's Vijay as the police informer; Priyanka Chopra's robust Roma, who is Vijay's girlfriend; Arjun Rampal's fairly pointless Jasjit, who needs to get even with DCP D'Silva…)

The story of Don itself is merely a plot device; a valid premise for the polish; hearty reason for adapting Hollywood's thriller aesthetics; an efficient explanation for the escapism. It helps the 'redux' find a grammar of its own, with an existing strong narrative to support it — an infinitely more intelligent and entertaining screen to watch, than a bunch of bikers always zooming off with unexplained loot that nobody knows where they cart off.

Only rarely do you just revel in, rely on, or resent certain aspects, for reminiscences of the Don you know. The first is when the tracks 'Khaike Paan' or 'Yeh Mera Dil' play out purely as passé remixes: a different scale, key or tempo to the numbers could've helped us see a new side to the immortal songs.

The second of course concerns the leading man. In a 16-year film career, I doubt, he has adorned as stylized a screen image, or looked better. The trouble with having Amitabh Bachchan as the predecessor to the particular role though is matching up to Bachchan's natural ease at walking in both as an earthy bumpkin, and a smooth sophisticate. Shah Rukh's goofy, rustic Vijay, by no means, disappoints, which is a surprise. In fact he deserved more screen-time.

The film itself is truly a spirited work of a '70s movie-enthusiast (the villain's redesigned den, or the shiny disco-ball appear, though only once in a while); a novel idea, when official remakes as tributes have usually been considered the privilege of an old 'classic' that Don isn't. Now I'm only wary of me-too movie-manufacturers who seem to have found a new excuse to deliver knock-offs under the garb of 'reinterpretation' of films they've seen and loved, and so we must see again. Let's just put it this way: As adequate and astounding an echo it may be, Akhtar's film can at best hope to share its space, a rack or two lower in history, to an original voice. Let this be an ample aberration, and not a norm. We usually pay to watch films we haven't seen.

Jaan-E-Mann

FILM: Jaan-E-Mann
DIRECTOR: Shirish Kunder
ACTORS: Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Preity Zinta
Salman, the leading man of this film couldn't have dished out a more accurate assessment of himself as an actor as he recently did on a television interview. He said, you can point several flaws about me as a person, but you can never fault my acting. Because I don't act!

He really doesn't. We know that. He merely saunters into the screen, half-heartedly does us a favour, with a line, or an expression or two, whatever the character, and casually walks away. Often we're told the said film actually set cash registers ringing, and no one's surprised. At least I'm never surprised. It's as difficult to explain the actor's unprecedented stardom as to tell the origins of his strangely Yankee/Brit/Aussie/Kiwi… English twang.

It may be a little less difficult to explain the origins of this film. But it's almost as hard to point out its purpose.

What sets out as an object of camp humour with Akshay's astronaut narrating his life's story to his blonde girlfriend in Hindi on the moon, turns into a convoluted, callous confusion among a riot of colours that the film's many crores' worth of production design allows it.

Stupendous sets for a stage, and special effects to awkwardly light up the screen within and between below-average, to first-rate songs, may seem a noble cause. So may bizarreness that befits a Broadway musical: an army of qawwals walking out of a wooden wardrobe, for instance.

But all that I noticed it added up to was, perhaps, Nikhil Advani's Kal Ho Naa Ho, with Preity Zinta, New York City; without Saif, Shah Rukh, and a sense of humour.

Since he was a boy, Akshay's nerdy, Napoleon Dynamite look-alike, had helplessly been in love with the pretty girl in his class, who in turn couldn't care less for him; she was dating Salman's stud-muffin named 'Superstar'. Years later, 'Superstar' helps the nerdy Napoleon get the girl, not because he's dying, but because he's divorced her, and cannot afford the settlement dues.

Much else, if you can keep your eyes off the assault of random colours and on-the-spot scenes and sequences, is purely a pastiche of New York images before the inevitable question: Who will get the girl?

It'd all been okay in what seems an intentional subversion of the two-hero-one-heroine Bollywood vignette, if there was anything genuinely spunky and funny (like perhaps, Salman-Akshay's last outing, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi). This one sticks to staying corny, that's all. Somewhere along the line, we were meant to get emotionally stirred too. Well…

The back-ground score, editing, dialogue, story, screenplay, have all been credited to the film's director. Perhaps a little more collective effort could have produced a more coherent result (more dialogues for the perennially speechless leading lady, for one?)

There is a bit of both self-indulgent idiocy, and an effort to find a new idiom to tell a new story here. Unfortunately, for the film, the former entirely over-rules the latter.

Preity is very affectionate and talkative, Akshay

Akshay Kumar talks about the several controversies surrounding him

You had a problem with Salman Khan during the shooting of Jaan-E-Mann because he passed a rude comment about your wife Twinkle Khanna.

Yes, I had a huge problem with Salman. In fact, we had a fist-fight with each other. Whenever we were acting on the sets, we behaved like friends, but as soon as we would return to our respective make-up vans fighting would ensue. I guess Salman and I are good actors even off-screen as no one could make out that we couldn't stand each other.

Are you serious?

No, I am not. Wereyou serious? I hope not. (Laughs) Nothing of that sort transpired between Salman and Twinkle. They respect each other. Salman is a very chilled-out guy. People love to associate Salman's name with brawls, so they did just that.

While shooting for Jaan-E-Mann, Salman got into a lot of trouble. The dates went haywire and you had to put up with all of this.

Salman did go through a lot of problems during the making of the film, and I had to adjust all my dates. But then I told him that if I get into trouble in near future then he will have to adjust his dates. And that's the deal between us.

Why didn’t Preity Zinta and you work together after Sangarsh?

After Sangarsh, Preity got into the school of Yashraj and Dharma Productions. Unfortunately, I never got admission to those schools, so we never crossed each other's path. When she decided to work with Sajid Nadiadwala, we got that chance again. Even after so many years, Preity remains the same. She is very affectionate and talkative.

Is it true that she avoided working with you since you were considered a flop hero? Now that you have given a couple of hits, she has agreed to work with you…

At least someone is admitting that I am saleable. (Laughs) That makes me happy. I am glad that finally Preity thought that I am worth it.

You have signed two films with Vidya Balan besides Rituparno Ghosh's Rahgeer. Has it upset Rituparno that Vidya Balan-Akshay Kumar won't be seen as a pair for the first time in his film?

I don't think that Rituparno is upset with me. There has been some problem with Rahgeer and they are working on the script. Meanwhile, we got two good offers and decided to go ahead with them. I will be doing Rahgeer but I don’t know when.

You seem to be pretty cool about Aarav's photographs being splashed all over nowadays whereas it wasn't so earlier.

I am not cool about it. I am dead against publishing my son's photographs. Only twice a cameraman managed to get Aarav's picture with me. I don't want my son to get photographed at this age. He is a kid and he should be allowed to remain so. It's unfair to spoil his childhood. He has his friends and I am sure he is happy playing with them.

I need to look different for myself and the characters I play

Preity Zinta has not only dared to pick the most unusual roles but has also reinvented herself time and again...

"If I’ve changed myself to suit a role, it’s because I need to look different for myself and the characters I play. My advice for people would be to reinvent yourself from within. Think of cleaning the environment, try and get the potholes fixed — there are so many causes one can take up. Most importantly, one should try and be a better person."

‘Dil Chahta Hai’
The wavy long hair and fresh-faced look made many hearts flutter as she coyly wooed Aamir Khan in a casual carefree style.

‘Lakshya’
While her hair in the first portion of the film was curly, in the second portion it was short cropped - apt for the newsreader’s role she essayed.

‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’
She played the editor of a fashion magazine and her svelte, glam look looked just right for the part.

the ‘Babuji’ girl was contemplating writing a book on fitness

The model is busy composing, singing and posting her numbers on her blog

Early this year, model and actor Yana Gupta decided to pursue music, one of her long-harboured passions, with greater fervour. Her plans then included releasing a private album. Alongside, the ‘Babuji’ girl was also contemplating writing a book on fitness. Four months down the line, Gupta has constructively begun work towards fulfilling her dreams.

She’s been regularly writing lyrics, setting them to tune, singing them and posting them on her personal blog. The songs that she has composed and sung have apparently drawn a positive response from her friends. The numbers with a distantly jazzy bent are in English. A friend of Yana says that she wants to compile the songs and release it for a wider listener base. In fact, one of her songs, ‘This is how things are’ has made a friend of hers to comment, “Nice sound. Hope to see you singing in one of your next films.”

Incidentally, besides modelling and acting, Yana has interests in poetry and painting. Meanwhile, Yana was not available for comment.

Karisma is a big star and I need her to promote the film

Filmmaker S Ramanathan is looking for the actress. But she seems determined not to be found

After eight years, filmmaker S Ramanathan’s (Bombay to Goa and Mahaan) film Zamanath starring Amitabh Bachchan, Arshad Warsi and Karisma Kapoor is finally ready for release.

But just when he thought his problems had come to an end with the impending release, he finds he has a different predicament ahead now. While Bachchan and Warsi have co-operated in promoting the film, Karisma has been evasive, which has been a source of grief for Ramanathan.

This comes as a surprise, because Karisma has been known for her professionalism. However Ramanathan says, "I think she has some reservations about the film. I have already made several calls to her secretary informing him that she is free to see the film and give media interviews as per her convenience. But she has been avoiding me. Maybe, she is busy with something else.” But, as a filmmaker why does he not make direct contact with her? "She prefers her secretary to talk to me on her behalf. She is not taking my calls. I don't know how to get in touch with her. I called her several times, on her Mumbai and Delhi numbers, but she never answered any of my calls. I don't know how to get in touch with her,” he says sounding distressed.

Meanwhile, Karisma's secretary, Zahid has been equally evasive with Ramanathan. "He is yet to get back to me. Karisma is a big star and I need her to promote the film. I am not denying that the film has been delayed but it goes very well with the story as there is an 18-year-gap in the film," he says.

When contacted Zahid evaded commenting on the issue and said, "Karisma is in Delhi now and we will get a clear picture of her plans once she returns to Mumbai."

Amisha's new look

And now Amisha Patel has made up her mind to stick to minimal make-up, on screen and off it. In fact, she has got a new deglam portfolio done by photographer Avinash Gowarikar.

Amisha says, "I usually don't like to wear too much make-up. All my friends tell me that I look much better without make-up and that's how I prefer to be too. But on screen it is different. There I was forced to don lots of make-up. Now I just want to scrub my face clean. So in that sense, I guess this is the new me."

Remembering her blonde-look days she says, "Well, the rebel in me made me colour my hair blonde. But now I am back to my original hair colour. And one thing I am sure about is that that I will never ever cut my hair short again. Not even if Steven Speilberg asks me to. I just love every inch of my locks."

Talking about Amisha's new look, lensman Avinash Gowarikar says, "I would call it her 'bare' look. I was discussing something with her in her make-up van when the idea struck me. She was looking particularly good without any make-up and so we decided shoot then and there. I just ran out and got my camera from my car and the results were stunning."

"When actors pose for pictures they are usually not candid. But in this set of pictures Amisha looks natural. She was looking at herself in the mirror when we shot it. After losing weight, she's looking even better," he says.

As for her weight loss, Amisha says, "I have been gymming very hard for 2 hours daily and I have a completely new and toned look now."

Shah Rukh Khan is here, there, everywhere

Mumbai: As his film Don hits theatres this week, Shah Rukh Khan is here, there, everywhere creating buzz and adding to the visibility factor.

On Wednesday night, King Khan made it to veteran actor Dilip Kumar's bungalow for the music release of Saira Banu's Bhojpuri film Ab To Ban Ja Sajanwa Hamar. And as expected Shah Rukh hogged all the limelight with his smart one-liners.

Sample this – when asked if he can visualise himself in a Bhojpuri film he said, "I have not been able to visualise myself in Hindi films in the past 16 years so how can I do that in Bhojupri films".

However, he said that he is not averse to the idea.

"If I have the time and the opportunity then why not. A film is a film, so long as I am good enough. I don’t know if I will be good enough in Bhojpuri films but somebody needs to give me a chance," at his wittiest best, Shah Rukh quipped.

Like Don, would he like to see himself in Sholay's remake too?

"I would have like to do Hemaji's role," Shah Rukh said in jest.

And finally some plug-in for Saira's film's music. "I think there is one love song. I’m taking the tape home," he said, searching the film's tape in his pocket and then showing it to everyone.

One can’t say much about the music, but with Yashraj Films distributing this Bhojpuri debut venture of Saira Banu, the film is certain to reach out to the audiences.

'Devdas' in Bhojpuri

A Bhojpuri version of "Devdas" is on the anvil.

"Its estimated cost will be Rs.10 million, and the film is likely to hit the screen by next summer," filmmaker Kiran Kant Verma said.

The film is not going to have a big budget like the one in Hindi made by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, but costly enough for a Bhojpuri film.

According to Verma, "Devdas" in Bhojpuri will be a story of love and tragedy as painted by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee in his novel with the same name.

"This will not be a remake of 'Devdas' made by Bhansali, P.C. Barua and Vimal Roy, but a different 'Devdas'," Verma said.

The costumes and sets will give the film a Bihar-Uttar Pradesh rural touch.

"We will finalise the actors in lead roles by this year end," he said. "The film will be shot in Bhagalpur, Varanasi and Mumbai, and shooting will possibly start by March next year."

Kareena reminds helen

Amitabh Bachchan watched Farhan Akhtar's ‘Don' and he loved the film very much, as per reports pouring in. Two days prior to its official release, a special screening was arranged at the Yash Raj Studios in Andheri to show the film to the old don besides other celebrities and after the show Big B however didn't hide his happiness. Director Farhan Akhtar said, “He loved the new film and he loved the way it has been made.”
The new ‘Don' starring Shah Rukh Khan as Don not only gave him immense pleasure, but also reminded him the time when the earlier ‘Don' was being filmed.
During the interval, Bachchan described to Farhan the first day of the shooting in July 1974 at the Mehboob Studios.
“It was ‘ Yeh mera dil' song that I shot with Helenji, and with that the film's shooting started.” Bachchan recounted, then he was all of 32 and Helenji was 40. “But the way she danced ….,” Bachchan glowed with unspoken glitter.
Shah Rukh Khan was also present at the special screening. “He was looking sinfully good,” said a source.

I am very close to the ‘Jaanemann' team, Priyanka

Though she's the heroine of the film, but so honest actress Priyanka Chopra is expressed her wish to watch ‘Jaanemann' first later her ‘Don'. How strange it may sound, Priyanka has nothing to do with that.

I can't rush into projects and then find the time to do them

They say she has become difficult. What they mean is, she's turning down assignments for which other actresses would give their left arm and right profile. "But I really don't see my career in that way," says the softspoken constantly apologetic and yet unshakeable Parineeta girl. "I can't rush into projects and then find the time to do them. I've to be completely convinced about every detail about my character and my willingness and ability to portray it, before saying yes."

And she's willing to be dubbed difficult for her professionalism. Recently when she opted out of an avant-garde director turned producer's period film the man went around town calling her unprofessional. "But I never say yes and only to have second thoughts."

It appears as though Vidya is a victim of the Saif Syndrome. Filmmakers approach Vidya with roles that she's not convinced about, tell her to think over it, and then turn nasty when she says a final no.

"I can't take on work that I cannot do. Yes, I've had certain reservations about some aspects of a couple of scripts that I was offered recently. Frankly they’re roles to kill for. But I cannot bring myself to play characters I don't identify with. Maybe I'm too new or too scared. But I'd rather go cautiously than plunge impulsively into a film and then regret it later."

Also, at the moment Vidya is slightly more inclined to play contemporary roles. After Parineeta the risk of being branded an old-world actress is imminent. In her second film Lage Raho Munnabhai Vidya Balan played a radio jockey. "Not like what Preity Zinta played in Salaam Namaste. I don't think I could've carried off that look," Vidya laughs. "The girl was modern. She dressed trendily, but in the way I was comfortable and fashionable."

Now there's Nikhil Advani's Salaam-e-Ishq where she's paired with John Abraham. "Again a very contemporary character. John and I are so different in personality and yet so compatible together."

Another contemporary role is the one Vidya she plays in Sajid Khan's Hey Baby. "I'm really looking forward to that. You know Sajid and I've known each other for years. He has a terrific sense of humour. I keep asking him why I haven't become as tall as Mr Amitabh Bachchan after the way he keeps pulling my leg."

So is it goodbye to period films after Parineeta? "No such rules. I'm truly flattered if filmmakers come to me with films that search out a past. At the moment I'm looking at my present."

She's also looking forward to working with Rituparno Ghosh . "He's a director who's bound to bring out the best in me….for whatever I may be worth."

"I am sorry if you are being inconvenienced, Shahrukh

Public relations (PR) agencies should take a tip or two from Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan on how to turn the charm on the media.

The suave and sharp Shah Rukh, who has also been blessed with the gift of the gab, subtly bailed out a high-profile PR agency that was managing an event for Pepsi, the cola giant, on Sunday.

The Pepsi train ferried Shah Rukh, his "Don" co-star Priyanka Chopra, journalists and others from Delhi to Jaipur for the India-England match.

When some members of the camera-toting brigade refused to budge after they had had their fill of shots of King Khan and Priyanka at a press conference, the already hyper media manager of the PR company became even more edgy.

"Aap ne apna vaada tod diya (you have broken your promise)," she shrieked into the mike time and again. "Bhaisahab mere saath co-operate kariye (co-operate with me)," she pleaded.

But the camera-toting brigade, who were perched on chairs, refused to "cooperate" because she was behaving like a "schoolteacher".

Shah Rukh patiently watched her struggle for a few minutes and then took the mike. "I am sorry if you are being inconvenienced," he told the reporters. "But I think it is mostly because of your own selves," he chuckled.

He had driven home the point most charmingly and no one seemed to object.

Before the media could bowl their questions, he pre-empted their first query: "I know you all will be dying to ask me when was the last time I travelled on a train. Seven years ago..."

He fielded questions from all sides - on cricket, his son, his movies, his endorsements - and rephrased nervous questions and put everything into perspective for the media.

He even explained the shift in the focus of Pepsi's new campaign, of which he is an ambassador, more articulately than the Pepsi marketing head herself.

The media manager, who was keeping tabs on the time, screamed into the mike again. "Last two questions." Shah Rukh cut her midway and smiled into the mike, "No. Last four questions."

The media cheered him.

Four questions over, the media manager asked the print media to leave and make way for more of the camera-toting brigade, who also wield mikes.

She asked the journalists to hand her their mikes, to which they objected. With a scramble over who would do a one-on-one with Shah Rukh-Priyanka first, Shah Rukh decided to play the star-cum-media manager.

"Let me coordinate with them," he said loud and clear to the media manager.

The media was, of course, happy that he had taken over and they would not have to hear more about "broken promises".

The one-on-ones over, which seemed more like cattle grazing on the same patch of green, the media were asked to leave.

Although Shah Rukh had no problems spending more time with the media, the manager didn't seem game.

Even as the security shooed away the media persons "to the left" as if they were "untouchables", Shah Rukh was very gracious - still stopping to sign autographs and answer questions.

Without being rude he put the journalists, who overstepped their limits, in place.

A cub reporter asked him for an autograph and he willingly obliged. Next she asked him for his number he rattled, "601...". She said she wanted his cellphone number. "My personal numbers are not for you, sweetheart!" he said, patting her shoulder and walked away.

It was amazing to see him multi-task - answering questions, signing autographs, humouring Pepsi honchos - even as others looked bleary-eyed at the early morning event.

At an awards ceremony some years ago, Shah Rukh was interrupted by the hostess because the time allotted to him to speak was over. Few minutes later we saw the hostess melt into the darkness of the backstage and Shah Rukh hosting the show impromptu.

He did a pretty good job - being at his wittiest best, all along taking pot shots at the hostess, who was never seen in films again.

‘Akbar-Jodha', which was supposed to go on the floors in coming weeks

Ashutosh Gowariker's forthcoming historical venture ‘Akbar-Jodha', which was supposed to go on the floors in coming weeks, facing tough times, as the Kshatriyas of Rajasthan, represented by Rajput Youths has asked the film's producers to give proof of the historical facts about Akbar and Jodha's marriage before commencing the film's shooting in Rajasthan. On failing of which, they have threatened to take legal action against the producers.
Surajmal Singh, the chief of Rajput youths in Rajasthan, has been resenting Jodhabhai's portrayal in the wrong frame her and characterization in films and TV channels in the past. According to him, there has been a big misconception about Jodhabhai and it has been repeated many times by the entertainment and media world. He adds that there are no proofs of Jodhabhai's marriage with Akbar in historical records. In fact, it was Pannabhai (the look alike of Jodhabhai) who was married with Emperor Akbar and not Jodhabhai.
The film will have Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai playing Akbar and Jodha respectively. We however couldn't contact the director-producer Ashutosh Gowariker to know his reaction on this issue.

Reactions to a recent trial in London have been positive. "It's a commercial entertaining thriller, which holds you till the end credits," said our source.

We are also informed that a leading multinational bank's high net-worth customers have actually flown in to London from various parts of Europe especially to watch 'Don' on Wednesday evening.

I wouldn’t start my new film until I am sure that the foundation [script] is strong,” Rakesh says

Almost everyone is aware that Rakesh Roshan is planning to start the third installment in the KOI… MIL GAYA series. However, there’s a slight change in his plans. The super-successful film-maker is working on two projects currently and only after he’s convinced about the script will he make an announcement of his next venture.

Over to Roshan Sr., who’s going through his best phase professionally, post-KRRISH: “Yes, I am working on two films. But what’s fallacious is that my immediate film will be the third installment in the KOI… MIL GAYA series. Ab tak kuch pucca nahin hain. Till I am 100% sure of the script, I won’t announce my next film.”

Really? “What if the third installment doesn’t shape up to the expectations on the script level? I’ll immediately revert to the second idea that I am working on. I’ll take a decision in a couple of months from now. I wouldn’t start my new film until I am sure that the foundation [script] is strong,” he states.

With KRRISH doing phenomenally well at the box-office, the expectations from his next film have risen ten-fold. “The expectations keep multiplying with every film. If you’ve delivered a box-office dud, you need to work doubly hard in your next film. And if you’ve had a big hit, you have this responsibility to match or surpass the hit. Responsibility kab nahin hoti?” he smiles. Well said!

Shah Rukh Khan will play the lead negative role in "Dhoom 3"

SRK all set for a villainous comeback in Dhoom 3, putting to rest rumours of a falling out with Chopras
Dhoom made an overnight star out of John Abraham and gave the much-needed lease of life to Abhishek Bachchan's career. Following which, Aditya Chopra launched Dhoom 2 with much fanfare and surprised everyone by signing on Hrithik Roshan in a negative role.

Well the surprises are far from over. Apparently, Aditya Chopra who is mighty impressed with the way Dhoom 2 has shaped up, has already started work on Dhoom 3. The even bigger surprise is that Shah Rukh Khan will play the lead negative role along with Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra in the next sequel, say sources. This news will no doubt put to rest all those rumours of SRK’s falling out with Aditya Chopra.

Pulling out all stops , the Chopras have reportedly also signed on Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor whose first film Saanwariya is yet to be released but has already generated a decent buzz

In addition to the newbies, there will be old favourite Aishwarya Rai who plays the lead character opposite Hrithik in Dhoom-2.

A source in Yash-Raj informs, "Aditya Chopra has seen Dhoom 2 at least 20 times and he loves the movie. In fact, he even delayed the release of Dhoom 2 by one month as he wanted to work a little more on the special effects. He sees great potential in the concept of Dhoom and that's why even before the release of the sequel, he has begun planning the third edition .

However, since Sanjay Gadhvi's three-film contract with Yash-Raj is over (after Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, Dhoom and Dhoom 2) and since Gadhvi is making a film for Astavinayak now, it is still not decided who will direct Dhoom 3," he added.

Bollywood should have scenes of smoking going up in smoke

New Delhi: With the self-confessed chain smoker vowing to stamp out the butt, Shahrukh Khan may have donned the role of an ambassador for anti-smoking campaigns. However, his latest avtaar as Don has the Health Ministry fuming.

The Censor Board has given the movie a U/A certificate, which the Health Ministry argues runs contrary to the new 'smoking ban' in movies.

"Don has scenes where the hero is shown smoking. We think it should get an Adult certificate," says Health Minister, Anbumani Ramadoss.

But the Information and Broadcasting Ministry is in mood to oblige. "Whether it is Don or any other movie, there is no such rule that as soon as you see a cigarette, you have to rate it as an 'adult' movie," says Information and Broadcasting Minister P R Dasmunshi.

"If we make a movie on Churchill, we will have to show him smoking," he says adding more fire to the debate between creative expression and glamorising smoking.

Don's diwali release may well light up the screens without a fuss. After all, the court is yet to decide whether Bollywood should have scenes of smoking going up in smoke.

Well, the latest buzz in film circles is that Gadhvi has roped in Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgan for the film, which is budgeted at Rs. 75 crores.

don’t think I can match up to what Zeenat Aman had done

Exclusive Interview With Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra is doing a role that is not a typically defined Bollywood role. She is playing Roma in her forthcoming movie Don, a role which was previously played by Zeenat Aman in the original. How well she has recreated the Zeenat magic, only time will tell. In the meanwhile we talk to Priyanka Chopra about her experience of being a part of the new DON.

What was your reaction when you were offered DON?
When Farhan first narrated Don to me, I was very excited about the fact that Don is being remade and more excited about the fact that I get a chance to play the role of Zeenat Aman. But after a week I was a little nervous since Zeenat Aman played the character so well that I wondered if I will be able to do justice to the character as good as her. That you will come to know only by Friday.

How different are you from Zeenat Aman? Have you seen the old Don?
I definitely have seen the film. I saw the film when I was 13. When I was offered Don, I did not watch Don again because I did not want to do it like Zeenat Aman. If I tried being like her, I would not have been able to do justice to Roma as Zeenat aman had done a superb job. Comparisons are inevitable but Zeenat will always be the original Roma. I am just trying to recreate the character in a little different manner. We made Roma’s character a martial arts fighter. We trained her. In terms of performance we have kept her subtle and restrictive. I do not know how it will turn out but I hope people like it.

How did you manage to pull off so many stunts?
Action is a first for me. I have never done an action movie where I have done my own action. I was very excited. I did all my stunts on my own. That for me is a very big deal. I wanted to make a record. For a first timer it is always exciting that you have done all your stunts all by yourself, without cables, without duplicates. The training aspect of it, learning martial arts which I have never done before, all that was a lot of fun.

How different is the new Don from the old?
There is a lot of difference. Presentation is very different. But besides that, the plot is the same, the story is the same, the essence of the film is the same. This Don is technically more sound.

There are original tracks as well as remakes of old songs? Why have you done so?
Don is our team’s perception of the old Don. It is not the old Don and it is very important for people to understand that. But at the same time when we are remaking Don, it is incomplete without Khaike Paan Banaraswala and Yeh Mera Dil and hence we have retained it. We have contemporized the songs. They are obviously not the original songs because someone else is singing with new music to it

What is the glamour quotient in the film?
All three of us, whether it is Kareena, Isha or me, all three of us are very very glamorous in the film because all the heroines in DON have to be glamorous.

How is the experience to work in a remake of a film?
It is very nerve-wrecking to be working in a film’s remake, especially a cult super hit film. Don became a cult film. People used to look up to that film. I clarify again that our reason to make Don again is not to make Don a better film. That is not possible. We have just made a technically more sound film. We have made this film with one major reason being youths. Those who have not seen this classic, or the younger ones for whom old films is like the films in 90’s or 80’s, will really enjoy this Don. I know so many people who say they haven’t seen the old Don. This is for all of them.

How was it working with Farhan Akhtar?
Farhan is a fantastic director. He has a very fresh approach to films and cinema. He knows exactly what he wants and he knows how to get it but at the same time he gives his actors a lot of independence to work better. He listens to everyone, takes their opinions, and eventually takes the decision himself which is exactly what a director has to do.

Any nervousness regarding the comparisons with the old Don?
Of course, there is bound to be nervousness because I don’t think I can match up to what Zeenat Aman had done. There is bound to be nervousness which is why I tried to play Roma differently. I guess this Friday will decide that.

Can we expect sizzling chemistry between you and Shahrukh?
That is for you to decide. It is exactly the same film. I cannot comment on that. I guess you will have to watch and find out.

Farhan’s films always have a technical break through. What is the USP here?
The way Don has been cut, it is so fast, that it doesn’t give you time to think. It just goes really really quickly and that I think is the USP of Don.

Which is your favorite song from the film?
Khaike is my favorite song honestly. Yeh Mera Dil and Khaike are the most integral parts of the film, without which the film is incomplete. I also love the title track of Don and also Aaj Ki Raat. Basically I love all the songs.

Whom do you think has the sexiest character in the film?
I feel Boman Irani’s character is the sexiest in the film.
Don is coming during the Diwali season. What difference can that make on the film according to you?
I feel festive season is very good for any film’s release. People want to go out, watch films. We hope we live up to it. This is our Diwali gift to the audience. I hope people enjoy the film.

Which Don do you want to be remembered more?
See comparisons are bound to happen. We have made a film for the people. We do not want to replace the old characters as they have immortalized themselves but we are just trying to present the same film with a different star cast in a slightly different manner. So we want people to like both the Don’s

What do you feel of Shahrukh Khan in the film?
I think he is fabulous in the film. I do not think anyone could have enacted Don the way Shahrukh Khan has done it after Amitabh Bachchan.

Any scene which was very difficult to perform?
There is one scene where I have to jump over one car and get into another in the film. That scene took me 15 takes because the bonnet of the car was so hot, it made the job more difficult.

Nikhil is planning a four-hero project next

Film industry and gossip/rumors go hand in hand. In fact, it’s become a habit to hear at least one startling news in the course of the day and later, when you do a bit of cross-checking, you learn that it was a false siren. This time, Nikhil Advani is the topic of discussion!

Reportedly, Nikhil is planning a four-hero project next, once SALAAM-E-ISHQ releases, for which he’s keen to cast Big B, Hrithik Roshan, Akshaye Khanna and John Abraham in principal roles. A news-report even suggests that Nikhil has already paid a handsome signing amount to John.

“Rubbish,” Nikhil laughs aloud, “Where do these rumors originate from? I don’t know what I plan to make next, so how could I be signing the stars for it? I wrapped the shooting of SALAAM-E-ISHQ on Sunday [15th October] and the next three months would be devoted to the post-production work. Where’s the time to think of a new film?”

But there can’t be smoke without fire. The director of KAL HO NAA HO must’ve planned something. “Oh yes, I’ve planned to take a year off once SALAAM-E-ISHQ releases in January 2007. I have decided I won’t work for a year. I owe it to myself and my wife. SALAAM-E-ISHQ has exhausted me completely and I need to recharge my batteries,” he smiles.

All eyes are on SALAAM-E-ISHQ for sure. In fact, it’s amongst the three big films that are slated for release in January 2007. Initially slated for a 26th January release, Nikhil has decided to prepone the release by one day, which means SALAAM-E-ISHQ will hit the marquee on Thursday, 25th January.

While the first teaser of SALAAM-E-ISHQ will be unveiled with JAAN-E-MANN, the promotion of the film will gather momentum from 7th November onwards.

"I can't believe I'm 58, Hema

It was meant to be a quiet 58th birthday for the ageless diva on Oct 16. "I can't believe I'm 58! There's so much more I want to do and time is running out. The people who are close to me weren't here. Esha is away in Cape Town shooting. My brother is in Chennai. And Dharamji is out of the country for important work. I couldn't expect everyone to put aside their commitments just to be near me on my birthday. But yes, my younger daughter Ahana was here and she had a small get-together for me in the evening. I'm not the kind to stay awake the night before to bring in my birthday."

But if she thought she'd just have a quiet birthday Hema had another thought coming. "The phone started ringing from early morning. And even before that one of my dear friends showed up at 4 am in the morning to wish me. That was so sweet."

The entire home was strewn with bouquets. "Flowers make me very happy. And on top of that I've just returned from a pilgrimage to the chaar-dham. So the atmosphere in my house was quite fragrant."

On the night before her birthday Hema was busy with a long photo-shoot. "A magazine is doing a special on legendary beauties. For some reason they think I'm one of those legendary beauties…I've never thought myself beautiful. Never stopped to think whether I'm beautiful or not. When people say so I still get embarrassed and don't know how to react."

Good acting is all about perfect timing

Chennai: They say good acting is all about perfect timing. So when actor Aishwarya Rai made a rare appearance in Chennai to inaugurate the first Longines watch boutique in the country, we asked her what else defines the relationship between time and an actor.

“Timing is crucial. Our every minute is defined by it. It’s very, very precious. I call time a very interesting ally, a friend and a challenger because we constantly try to keep up with it, fight it, embrace it and run with it. Evidently we are defined by it,” she says.

On the career front, Aishwarya is waiting with bated breath for her next big release, Umrao Jaan.

“The last I saw of it was during dubbing. I’m still waiting for the final print. I’m looking forward to it as you are. It was a pleasure working for the project. J P Dutta (director) is earnest in his ventures and it’s a film with Abhishek and Shabana Azmi.

Aishwarya is currently shooting for Mani Ratnam's Guru in Madurai. She had made her big screen debut in the filmmaker's Irruvar in 1997, so has she matured as an actress since then?

“That's something you have to ask him. I'm glad that I got to act with my guru Mani Ratnam. He’s a wonderful storyteller and a master technician,” she says.

But Umrao Jaan and Guru apart, Aishwarya swears that the surprise of the year will be Dhoom 2.

“It's contemporary, racy and movie of the times. It's new to see me in this genre and that's precisely why I chose to do it.

With a power-packed line up for the year-end, this former Miss World surely seems to be on a roll.

Arjun Rampal is very excited about wielding his cane in the remake of Don

Arjun Rampal doesn't only limp around as JJ in Don. He delivers mean martial arts stunts with his cane too

Arjun Rampal is very excited about wielding his cane in the remake of Don. However, there is something else that the actor is thrilled about. Not only did Rampal impersonate Jasjit (JJ), one of the most memorable characters in the thriller, but also learnt a new kind of martial art form - from the Ancient Warrior Monks of the Shaolin Temple. Arjun says, "Farhan hired a martial arts expert called Kanishk, a monk from the Shaolin Temple in China. He and his troupe trained each character in a different martial art form. My character is strong but emotional. JJ walks with a cane, so they showed me how to fight with a cane."

The troupe rehearsed with the cast of Don for an entire month before the film was shot. Arjun says. "It's stylised, and new. There's nothing over-the-top about it. You won't see sequences that need cables or have people flying around."

But what is action without an element of danger? "Thankfully I handled the cane very well," says Arjun. "But there was a sequence where I had to give a rounded punch to Shah Rukh, standing on a narrow bridge. My hand went right into the iron rods behind Shah Rukh and for the rest of the day I had to keep my hand covered with ice cubes."

Arjun's only problem was in getting his limp right. "That was quite tough. I had to keep my leg bent the whole day," he says. "Other than that, it was a great experience."

Besides his acting career Arjun is also focussing on producing his film along with Ke Sera Sera productions." I always wanted to venture into production and I thank everybody who encouraged me to take it up," he says. Now that would be wife Mehr, right?

Martial arts mantra

The Shaolin temple has a long tradition of Chinese martial arts. Most martial arts are from Shaolin. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Shaolin housed over 1,000 soldier-monks and they were often used by the government to combat rebellions and Japanese bandits.

The Shaolin systems were developed from animal actions like Northern Praying Mantis, Black Crane, Black Tiger, Dragon, Snake, Southern Praying Mantis, White Crane, etc.

The soldiers were trained to break steel over their heads, smash bamboo bats with their shins and be suspended on razor-sharp spear tips. Even today the Shaolin temple has many mysteries surrounding it, and many art forms are still a closely guarded secret among the monks of the temple.
