Coming Soon: A season full of Ash!

Aishwarya Rai may have lost Sexiest Aisan Woman crown to Priyanka Chopra but millions of hearts still skip the beat when Ash dazzles on silverscreen.

Come November and the talented actress would be seen in two strikingly different avtaars in Dhoom 2 and Umrao Jaan. Interestingly, Aishwarya’s look in Umrao Jaan is completely opposite of her suave and slick avtaar in Dhoom 2.

If she’s looking like a million bucks in the exquisitely designed costumes as Umrao, she’s at her sizzling best in the skimpily clad outfits in Yash Raj Film's sequel.

Anna Singh who designed clothes for the actress in Dutta's epic tells, "To dress Ash is the ultimate dream because her beauty supersedes the most stunning creation. Her costumes matched the phases of her life—from being a simple girl to the glam mujrewali Umrao Jaan Ada to her being heartbroken and finally growing old."

Even though she has not had a big hit film in a long time, yet the actress has her own high brand value. Another interesting thing is that both the films have Abhishekh Bachchan. If he’s romancing her in Umrao Jaan, he’d be seen chasing her in Dhoom 2.

The two will be also be seen together in Mani Ratnam’s Guru and Sarkar 2.

Sarkar 2’ will also be the second film to bring Amitabh Bachchan , Abhishek and Aishwarya together on the big screen. The trio previously jammed together for the song “Kajra Re” in the last year’s hit Bunty Aur Babli.

In Ramu’s film, however, their roles will be properly fleshed out. It'll show Abhishek becoming the head of the clan. Amitabh will have relatively lesser footage. Aishwarya will play the woman who loves Abhi and opposes his involvement in the underworld activities.

But will they create the Kajra Re magic again only time will tell....

They're threatening my family

Three days after his nephew was arrested in a molestation case, film star-turned-politician Govinda on Wednesday said he and his family have received numerous threats in the last one-and-a-half years.

"In the last one-and-a-half years, my family has been targeted 11 times... The children in our family are being targeted," he told a news channel over phone from Bangkok.

"Sometimes we are dragged to the police station for bursting crackers. On other occasions, we are put in the lock-up over driving without licence," he added.

Govinda said he and his family have received a variety of threats, including that of a bomb blast. "Someone says my entire family will be killed," he said.

He said the people who were targeting him were associated with politics and the threats were timed to have an impact on the party's fortunes in the forthcoming municipal polls.

"I am asked why I am not to be seen in politics. How can Govinda be active in politics when he is being targeted time and again. Moreover, how can someone who can't protect his family protect the interests of the people," he said.

Janvendra, nephew of Govinda, was arrested on Saturday last by Juhu police along with his three friends for allegedly trying to molest the wife of the personal assistant of a Maharashtra minister. He is now in judicial custody till October 11.

Asked if he was planning to quit politics, he said, "If ever I take a decision, it will be based on justice and truth."

Ayesha Takia's rare love story

Ayesha Takia and Tusshar Kapoor, who are playing lead roles in producer N.R. Pachisia's "Kya Love Story Hai", feel that the film is a unique love story and everybody will connect to it.

Ayesha plays a vibrant girl paired opposite Tushaar.

Talking about her role, she said: "I play Kajal, a young independent girl who knows exactly what she wants. She's studying and works part-time as well. She's a hardworking girl of today's generation with that innate drive and vigour.

"This is not like the ideal love story where a girl and a guy meet, fall in love and the villain plays the spoilsport. Everybody can relate to the film since everyone at some point in one's life has fallen in love."

Tushaar plays a fun-loving guy facing the mind-heart tussle.

"Though the basic plot is simple, what makes this love story different is the way the story unfolds. It also has freshness in terms of dialogues," said Tusshar.

Pachisia echoes the same views.

"Don't you think the title itself is unusual? I think it's a contemporary film in terms of presentation and projection. Besides, the Tushaar-Ayesha paring makes it unique."

The producer is equally confident about debutant director Lovely Singh. "New directors are very hardworking and sincere. They have that burning desire and fire within them to make things work," said Pachisia.

Singh is positive about his directorial debut.

"This is my first film and I'm not apprehensive about it. I'm trying to make a good film and give it my best. The characters are lovable with some great music by Pritam. We have recorded two songs and I must say he has done a great job."

Himesh: You Are My Sonia

She thought she had seen the best of the party's and night life entertainment in Mumbai but ever since she has returned from her US trip for the Himesh Reshammiya concert, Sonia Kapoor realizes what she has missed out on! Returning recently after the 45 days tour, she recalls the fabulous time she had there. It was a show of its kind and turned out very successful with the crowds going crazy and having a blast. It was literally like seeing the stadium turning into a nightclub packed with an audience of almost 20,000. It was party time for all and Sonia especially had a rocking time!

Sonia personally got good reviews and responses. Many fans came up to her to tell her how much they liked her shows on both Zee and Sony. “There were people who even remembered me from my old shows such as ‘Heena’ and ‘Aa Gale Lag Jaa’ for which I must have done at the most 50 episodes, and till date I had only heard about people there watching Indian tele-serials, but this time I was surprised to see that we have a really large audience there who love to watch our shows.”

She was specifically touched by an incident that happened in Chicago when a middle - aged couple came up to Himesh and said he was sort of a miracle man because their mentally retarded teenage son who usually doesn't respond to anything had lately started responding to his songs. “It was so touching to see the happy parents of the boy; it almost got me into tears.”

Karan Johar is going places. After going to the Toronto Film Festival and a stopover in New York, Karan is back in Mumbai to endorse the products of Hewlett & Packard. Reveals Karan, "Yes, it's my first endorsement. They've got four or five leaders from various fields to endorse their products. They got the market leaders, so to say. I was chosen from media and entertainment. I didn’t do it for any monetary purposes. I did it because their campaign seemed to suggest they wanted architects and not tools from various fields."

Karan has never endorsed any product before. "I don’t want to start selling soap. That's great for an actor. Not for me. I had to be careful about which product I chose to endorse. This one goes with my personality. It's a print campaign so far."

Karan jokes he felt like a star shooting the ad campaign. "Mickey Contractor did my make-up and Atul Kasbekar shot me. And then I faced the camera. Which was thrilling enough!"

Says Karan, "This is a specific campaign and not a long-term arrangement. I just had to hold a computer in my hand. I'm a frustrated actor and I always wanted to face the camera. I hope I didn't end up looking like a fool. Yes, it’s a first. There have been many firsts lately. I hosted a talk show and an awards function for the first time. By the way, I also make films."

Farhan had the whole DON structured in his head

Download Don WallpapersOf the entire cast of DON, Arjun Rampal has kept a relatively low profile and we won't be surprised if he's among the surprise packages at the end of it all!

It seems when Farhan Akhtar approached Arjun for the role played by Pran earlier, Arjun's immediate reaction was, "Wonderful, but wasn't Jasjit 44 years old in the original?!" But when Farhan actually gave him a full narration of the film and his character did Arjun understand that he wasn't going to be playing a 44-year old! "I won't say much except that Farhan had the whole story well structured in his head!" he laughs.

He continues, "To limp was difficult initially but the concept of cane with Jasjit at all times was very interesting. More than a prop it became a part of the character and so did the 'kada' and the 'family photograph' he carries with him in the movie. I always thought the character was more emotional than aggressive and the rage side to it was only an outcome of what he was made to go through."

It seems Arjun had to walk the top of the Petronas skybridge in Malaysia for one of the scenes! He confirms, "I did, and it was a lot of fun! Looking down from that height... wow!!"

Incidentally the film has been given an U/A certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification with no cuts.

Reportedly there is no smoking scene in the film. There is only one scene where there is a smoke ring around Shah Rukh Khan's face, but the character does not have a cigarette in his hand.

Bollywood gave Padmini global platform

PadminiIt was Bollywood that gave actress-dancer Padmini, who died Monday, the national and international prominence that she well deserved.

Padmini was Raj Kapoor's first heroine from the south when he was struggling to find a replacement for Nargis.

She was already doing Hindi films, having debuted with "Payal" in 1957, when Raj starred opposite her in "Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai", the 1960 blockbuster.

Her "Oye hoye hoye hoye hoye", that innocent mix of joy and banter, became a national buzzword as the film went on to win awards at home and abroad.

But the sequence of Padmini under a waterfall, popular for its sensuality, was panned by critics for possible vulgarity.

Her southern oomph was a major attraction of the film that had great music by Shankar Jaikishan, who composed some of the most lilting songs of Hindi cinema sung by Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar.

"Aa ab laut chalen," the climax song came to be regarded as a patriotic song, to be played on national days. It became the title of the maiden film that Raj's son Rishi Kapoor produced years later.

Then came "Aashiq" when Raj and Padmini scorched the screen with romance and songs, again a Shankar Jaikishan and Lata-Mukesh combination.

When Raj indulged in nostalgia in "Mera Nam Joker," Padmini was the only heroine he repeated, something unusual for him.

Along with Vyjayanthimala Bali, who had preceded her to national prominence via Bollywood, Padmini gave Hindi film dances a distinct southern classical touch. Critics thought it was "pseudo classical," but it has stayed a part of film choreography till today.

Like Vyjayanthimala, Padmini proved to be at home in any language that few other artistes emerging from regional cinema have been able to accomplish.

Undoubtedly among the most remarkable artistes to come from southern India, Padmini never really left her roots even after her marriage and migration to the US. She divided her time doing films in Mumbai and Chennai, while running a school of Indian dance in New Jersey.

She did that for a good 20 years before returning to Chennai when her husband K.T. Ramachandran died.

At the height of her popularity in Bollywood, she played Draupadi in Babubhai Mistry's "Ramayan".

She was legendary Ashok Kumar's ladylove in "Kalpana", the only film he produced. Playing a tomboy in contrast to the traditional courtesan played by Padmini in that film was her sister Ragini.

Along with Raj and Nargis, Padmini enjoyed immense popularity in the erstwhile Soviet Union. If Raj was called "Tavarish Brodigya," a street was named after Padmini.

The international high for the three came in "Pardesi", a landmark Indo-Soviet co-production. Director Vasili Pronin's film also had Prithviraj Kapoor and Balraj Sahni.

The film, entitled "Khozhdenie Za Tri Morya" in Russian, was about a Russian (played by Oleg Strizhenov) travelling to India in the 15th century to establish a trade route, and meeting his ladylove in the process.

Hollywood, that failed to understand the nuances of "Mother India" when it was entered for the Oscar that year, did not seem to think much of this Indo-Soviet effort. It was dubbed an adventure film, a travelogue and "kiddie-entertainment" by Hal Erickson in film journal All Movie Guide.

“If it being my second visit to the Oscars generates curiosity in people its ultimately good and beneficial for the movie” – Aamir Khan

This is UTV's 1st entry to the Oscars, how do you feel and what are your expectations on Rang De Basanti winning the award?
Ronnie Scewvala: Firstly this has been an outstanding year for the Indian film fraternity. Loads of movies with diverse topics have been made and graciously accepted by the audiences. The box office has also embraced these versatile movies. Being selected for the Oscars is only like climbing the 1st ladder of success. Rang De Basanti is a movie that has touched upon people’s life. Its success with the audiences itself is a big achievement for us; If it wins the award it would be like an icing on the cake.

In India when Rang De Basanti was released it was shown in lots of universities and colleges. Would the same step be taken abroad?
Ronnie Scewvala: We have already held numerous shows abroad in various universities with about 7000 students and more. Students there have instantly bonded with the movie theme because in many ways the issue is universal and they feel the same disillusions. A.R Rehman has performed number of concerts across the east coast of US promoting Rang De Basanti. Not only has this but A.R. Rehman had also co-played the tracks of RDB with western musicians and created fabulous remixes.

This will be your 2nd time at the Oscars. Do you think this is an added advantage for Rang De Basanti. You are now a known figure in the foreign film category so people will be eager to know more about this movie.
Aamir: Our main aim would be promoting this movie as effectively as possible. If it being my second visit to the Oscars generates curiosity in people its ultimately good and beneficial for the movie. I would definitely use all contacts I have and advise the director and producer at all times.

What does your gut instinct tell you, will Rang De Basanti make it?
Aamir: my gut instinct tells me Rang De Basanti will make India's dream come true.

Ayesha Takia refuses to work with her brother

Ayesha Takia is one gutsy girl. She lives up to what she speaks. And now she has done what most top league heroines would not dare to do. Ayesha has just refused to do a movie with her ‘Rakhi’ brother Nagesh Kukunoor with whom she has just done Dor. The reason being, a kiss was involved in the film.

Nagesh offered Ayesha the role in his next film. The script was very good and Ayesha loved it too. But the only problem was that the script demanded Ayesha to kiss. And Ayesha had made it clear to everyone that she will not be doing any kissing scene for any movie. This was long before even Dor happened to her. And till date she maintains what she said earlier.

This is not the first case Ayesha said no to a movie because of a kissing scene involved. She had earlier refused Yashraj Films, Neal N Nikki for the same reason. Way to go girl!!!!!

And what does he have to say about debutant director Lovely Singh? "I am very confident about him. New directors are very hardworking and sincere. They have that burning desire and fire within them to make things work," he adds.

Ayesha plays a vibrant girl and is paired opposite Tushaar. "I play Kajal, a young independent girl who knows exactly what she wants. She's studying and works part-time as well. She's a hardworking girl of today's generation with that innate drive and vigor," reveals Takia.

"This is not like the ideal love story where a girl and guy meet, fall in love and the villain plays a spoilsport. Everybody can relate to the film since everyone at some point in their lives have fallen in love," she signs off.

On the set of Kya Love Story HaiAnd here's the director speak. "This is my first film and I'm not apprehensive about it. I'm trying to make a good film and give it my best. The characters are lovable with some great music by Pritam. We have recorded 2 songs and I must say he has done a great job,"

Tushaar Kapoor plays Arjun, a fun loving guy who is torn between the mind-heart tussle. "Though the basic plot is simple, what makes this love story different is the way the story unfolds. It also has freshness in terms of dialogues etc," he says.

Amitabh is an addiction: Ram Gopal Varma

Download Sarkar WallpapersDirector Ram Gopal Varma, a self-confessed fan of Amitabh Bachchan, calls the superstar" an addiction".

"Amitabh is an addiction. Once you start working with him, you feel the urge to do it again and again," Varma told IANS.

The duo has worked together in films like "Sarkar" and "Darna Zaroori Hai" in the past and Varma is now looking forward to "Nishabd" and "Sholay".

About "Nishabd", Varma said: "It is the story of an old man falling in love with a younger girl. There is nothing abnormal with this phenomenon. It happens everywhere. But due to society and our rationality, we restrict ourselves from such feelings.

"My movie explores a similar kind of situation but with a twist. What happens when an old man falls in love with a younger girl and how his rationality is overpowered by his passion."

The remake of "Sholay" will see Amitabh as Gabbar Singh - a role originally played by Amjad Khan - and Mohit Ahlawat as Jai, earlier enacted by Amitabh.

Download Shiva WallpapersIs Mohit being given too much of an opportunity by the director?

Varma defends: "Every star is a newcomer at one point of time. It's the capability of a director to realise the potential in a new face.

"Moreover, just casting big stars doesn't make a good film. The script has to be good too. Casting big stars only helps the distribution of a film."

Deepa Mehta on Water being chosen as Canada's official Oscar entry!

This has to be a first. A film in the Hindi language about the widows of Varanasi has been chosen as Canada's official entry into the foreign-language category at the Oscars. Deepa Mehta's Water, already considered India's most feted film since Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali seems to have stuck a note of poignancy far beyond its immediate and culture-specific boundaries

Hours after the announcement Deepa Mehta was ecstatic. "I can't believe the irony of it. A film about the widows of India in Hindi, which I had to shoot in Sri Lanka because I wasn't allowed to suit in my home country, is now going to the Oscars as Canada's official entry. I'm specially proud since Water was up against many formidable films. It’s a very big moment for me" she said from New York where she’s finalizing a big epic to star Hollywood's most saleable actress.

"But before that I've to go into my next project Exclusion. John Abraham, who's now become a dear friend, is already on. But I'm waiting for Mr Bachchan to green-light the project." The international distributors Fox-Searchlight for Water geared into action within hours of the Oscar announcement. "They'll be taking care of the entire Oscar publicity and marketing. Fox-Searchlight hired the services of a major international PR agency within four hours of the Oscar announcement. I couldn't have done it on my own, not the way Aamir Khan took Lagaan to LA and promoted it for the Oscar."

Interestingly Deepa Mehta's Water will most probably be competing against Rakeysh Mehra's Rang de Basanti for an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign film. Says Deepa, "I loved Rang De Basanti. I think it's a very important Indian film. It should be India's Oscar entry. I'm now looking forward to the release of Water in India. My Indian distributor Mr Ravi Chopra is looking at a November release."

RDB all set to color the Oscar academy with saffron

Every so often Bollywood produces a rare gem like Rang De Basanti, a UTV Production that breaks the mould by offering something more sophisticated than the standard musical melodrama. Successfully weaving historical facts with contemporary themes, thanks to Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s direction that Rang De Basanti's absorbing plot, which flits smoothly from past to present, has marched successfully to be India's official entry for the Oscars this year.

This would also be Aamir Khan's second film to make it to the Oscars after Lagaan. Earning top points is the strong performances from the ensemble cast that impress foremost, all of whom are totally convincing as disillusioned youngsters learning the importance of personal sacrifice. Accomplished and universally appealing, Rang De Basanti has provided India with another hope to win the Oscar.

Says UTV's Ronnie Screwvala, "I'm delighted that Rang De Basanti has been chosen as India's official entry to the Academy Awards. RDB has made a place for itself in the hearts and minds of millions of people all around the world. Such movies come along only once in a generation and we shall make every effort to ensure it is seen by as wide audience as possible internationally too. To enable this, we are already planning a mainline release in the United States in association with two major studios. Following the rousing reception the film received at the Golden Globes jury screening, we are confident it stands a strong chance with the Academy."

Over the past few months the RDB effect…the effect the film had had on the public at large, from the infamous Jessica Lal verdict to the Narmada anti-dam campaign to the latest protest marches against the proposed quota for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in institutes of higher learning, forms of protest in India have undergone a sea change from the usual hunger-strike, mob-violence routine. What makes these protests stand out is perhaps a sense of 'feeling for the cause' that transcends age and gender barriers and 'motivates' people to lend their support. Quiet candlelight vigils, rousing protest marches, enthusiastic sloganeering, passionate sound bytes and SMS campaigns.

Interestingly, all these forms of rebellion find a strange resonance and are reminiscent of the reel-life depiction of 'youth awakening' in Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra's, Aamir Khan-starrer film Rang De Basanti the simple message being 'clean your own mess'.

Now let’s hope RDB colors the academy with saffron.

Aishwarya surpasses J.P Dutta's expectations

J.P DuttaJ.P Dutta is known for making films that he's passionate about. Be it BORDER, REFUGEE, LOC KARGIL, BATWARA, HATHYAR etc. Though his films are male-oriented, the prolific director has always portrayed women in a dignified manner. He has innate respect for women. He has never used women in a cheap manner merely to woo the audience and his magnum opus UMRAO JAAN also endorses this fact. It's about the young Amiran who was sold into flesh trade at a very tender age of 9 years.

He is more than happy with Aishwarya Rai's performance and cannot stop raving about her. Her role is not that of a sensuous courtesan but he has sensitively depicted the story of a young girl who is a victim of the flesh trade. He was looking for someone who'd bring alive Amiran's character and his search ended with the beautiful Aishwarya Rai. He said that Aishwarya had that enchanting and enigmatic quality and she has surpassed all his expectations.

What makes UMRAO JAAN intriguing is the fact that several generations and View Umrao Jaan Movie Stillsfilmmakers have tried to recreate the magic of UMRAO JAAN, (his being the 4th film). J.P is a stickler for perfection, which reflects in all his films. He used to brief his wife Bindya and designer Anna about the minutest details regarding costumes and colour coordination etc. The colour of the costumes, the fabric etc everything had to be just perfect. The colours used are completely in harmony with the surroundings. The entire look of the film is magnificent, the costumes are elegant and those who've heard the music are completely smitten by it. The music is very melodious and soulful. It infact marks the return of melody in music. Something the audience has not witnessed since a long time.

Priyanka unhappy about sharing poster space with females in Don?

Priyanka Chopra is upset at a news report claiming that she had been confiding to close friends about her unhappiness on sharing the limelight with hotties Ishaa Koppikar and Kareena Kapoor in the forthcoming 'Don'. Both of them have been appreciated in the 'Main Hoon Don' and 'Yeh Mera Dil' tracks respectively.

It seems Priyanka was not pleased about sharing poster space with her female co-stars and with their high presence in the film's television publicity.

In her defence, Priyanka emphatically clarifies, "The rumour is absolutely baseless and silly. I've been out of town for nearly three months on work, shuttling between countries and living out of a suitcase. Do I look insecure? I'm so proud to be a part of 'Don'. It was a great opportunity to work with such a fantastic bunch of professionals - Shah Rukh, Ritesh and Farhan. I hope to work with them again. It's among the highlight films of my career."

When asked about sharing the limelight with Kareena and Ishaa, she shot back, "I've worked with Kareena before. She's wonderful and adds to the star value of the set-up. Even Ishaa is very good in the film. I really wish people would stop creating fire when there's none!"

Vidya Balan on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal

She gave an award winning performance in Parineeta and matched up her acting skills in Lage Raho Munnabhai. Now she will be seen on the small screen on none other than the Rendezvous with Simi Garewal show.

In a special half hour episode, Vidya tells Simi about her modest upbringing, her teenage crush on Satyajit Ray, the countless performance tests she was put through, before she was finalized to play the role of Lolita in Parineeta and the naughty pranks that were played on her, on the sets of Lage Raho Munnabhai. She also talks about her spiritual side, discussing her deep faith in God. Simi reveals on the show that not only is Vidya a talented actress but is also a trained singer. She humbly agrees to Simi’s request and sings “Piyu Bole” melodiously on the show! Tune in to this heartwarming rendezvous with Vidya Balan this Sunday, on Star World.

Chat transcript

Simi:
Overnight you have admirers. Do you feel that Mein to nahin badli but everybody else has changed towards me?
Vidya: Yes, I feel that the perceptions of people have changed, but you really don't change.

Simi: How does your family feel now?
Vidya: They are very proud. I think post Lage Raho Munnabhai, a lot more people recognise me. Within a week, I can see the change.

Simi: Do you have the capacity of being tough?
Vidya: I'm very stubborn. If I have set my heart on something then I'll go all out to make sure I give it my best shot.

Simi: Are you tough in dealing with people?
Vidya: I am learning to say 'No'! And I realize that I'm ruffling quite a few feathers. But you can't always say yes!

Simi: Do you feel you are the chosen one?
Vidya: When we want things to happen in a certain way and they don't, we think that's the end of the world. But I'm a diehard optimist. I believe that all happens for the best.

Simi: You spend a lot of time in the temple.
Vidya: We've always been taught to pray and to believe that there's a supernatural guiding force which is responsible for everything. But I don't think anyone from my family is much into it. They all pray for sure, even if it's on the bed. But I spend a lot of time.

Simi: What gives you such deep faith?
Vidya: I think it's a combination of what I have read and the experiences that people have had. I have seen great things happening to people. When you surrender, it's beautiful. You realise you're not the doer. I don't think any of us are doing anything. We're just playing out God's plan!

Simi: What type of a relationship do you have with God?
Vidya: I think the guy up there is in each one of us.

Simi: Do you talk to him?
Vidya: All the time! Prayer is a self-fulfilling process. When you genuinely want something, like Paulo Coelho said, 'The Universe conspires to get it for you'. Where there is doubt, it won't happen.

Simi: Has your faith ever wavered?
Vidya: Not much any longer. But there were times when I used to be a very badly behaved teenager! But somewhere faith took over and I've been calmer.

Saroj Khan gets sentimental about DON

Bollywood's ace choreographer Saroj Khan is sentimental about Farhan Akhtar's forthcoming and much-hyped 'Don'.

More than a quarter of a century back, her mentor P.L. Raj choreographed Amitabh Bachchan and Zeenat Aman in the superhit 'Khaike Paan Banaras Waala' track from Chandra Barot's 'Don'. It happened to be one of Saroj's favourite tracks, which inspired her to take on choreography.

So when producer Ritesh Sidhwani and director Farhan Akhtar approached Saroj to choreograph the same song for their contemporary 'Don', Saroj was exhilarated and became very emotional about it.

She flew down to Malaysia and had a whale of a time choreographing Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra to the modern 'Khaike', which has been sung expertly by Udit Narayan and Shah Rukh Khan.

The song has been getting rave reviews even before the video is officially on air. According to sources, the video will be unveiled any day on television, so stay tuned!

The 'Awed' couple: Vidya - John in Salaam-e-Ishq

"It does feel like a very different kind of pairing, doesn't it?" says Vidya Balan about her latest co-star. Of late Vidya Balan is feeling very glamorous. "For a song in Lage Raho Munnabhai in Goa with Sanjay Dutt I had to go through sixteen costume changes in the course of the song. Isn't that cool?" Vidya sounds as excited as Mumtaz who changed into dozens of costumes for a film called Roop Tera Mastana.

After sizzlers like Bipasha Basu and Priyanka Chopra , John goes for a complete about-turn in Nikhil Advani's Salaam-e-Ishq. Vidya seems very happy with John. "No two actors could be more different in personality . John is very cosmopolitan and I'm very Indian in look and attitude. I think that friction in our personalities is essential to our on-screen compatibility. That's how our director Nikhil Advani saw us…We're two completely antithetical souls from the outside. I'm the simple homely girl, while he's the cool dude. But scratch the surface, and we're a perfectly compatible couple. Isn't that how it is in real life too?"

Director Nikhil Advani wants Vidya's maturity in matters of the heart to show on screen. "That's the quality I want to bring out in their on-screen chemistry. The Vidya-John pairing is so fresh…like East meeting West. The two are so different in all aspects …their body language, their approach to a scene…everything is so different. I'm really excited about how their pair looks on screen," says Advani whose film already has a chalk-and-cheese pair Govinda and the South African actress Shanon.

Vidya had thirty whole days to get acquainted with the finer points of John's personality "He's so hassle-free and so much fun to work with. I may look like this demure Indian girl. But I like my share of fun. I think John and I are going to make a great on-screen couple."

Esha Deol haunts Isha Koppikar

Well, here’s the scoop of Ram Gopal Varma’s latest directorial venture Darling. As against the title, this isn’t a romantic film (you can expect that in his other film Nishabd). On the contrary this is a ghost story. Not the typical scary types though but on a much lighter note.

In this film Fardeen is paired opposite two women who sound the same but spell different (Esha Deol and Isha Koppikar). Esha Deol and Fardeen Khan are in love until Esha suddenly passes away. Fardeen hooks up with Isha Koppikar and they get married. Now the fun begins when the ghost of Esha Deol who is still in love with Fardeen and has not yet crossed over into the other world comes into their lives and enters Isha’s body.

This is Fardeen Khan’s second encounter with a ghost. The first time was also in Ram Gopal Varma’s Bhoot. However that film was more serious while this film is an out an out comedy.

Priyanka is the sexiest in Asia

Priyanka Chopra has been voted the sexiest Asian Woman in 2006 as per a poll conducted by a magazine. Last year the same crown was given to Bipasha Basu. Priyanka Chopra seemed quite flattered when the news was given to her but she was also surprised as she does not look at her in that sense.

Other prominent Indian faces in the top 10 are Bipasha Basu, Aishwarya Rai, Mallika Sherawat, Riya Sen and Malaika Arora Khan. Well we have to say Indian beauties are going places.

Priyanka Chopra will definitely be a big contender for the crown again next year because she is looking stunning by the day. Her next few releases include Don, Salaam-E-Ishq and God Tussi Great Ho.

The last that we have heard from Shahrukh Khan about the movie will surely raise pulse beats to his die-hard fans.

SRK asks his fans to not to miss the beginning and the end of the film. He further says that the film is not exactly a remake of the 1977 blockbuster and it is quite different from the original one.

Now ‘Aankhen 2’

Sequels are in. Every established and resourceful producer is making one. And why not? With sequels to HERA PHERI [PHIR HERA PHERI], KOI… MIL GAYA [KRRISH] and MUNNABHAI M.B.B.S. [LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI] proving smash hits and the sequel to DHOOM [DHOOM 2] being awaited with bated breath, the dream merchants in Mumbai are getting ready to write a new chapter in film-making.

Now get set for the sequel to AANKHEN.

The Amitabh Bachchan - Akshay Kumar - Arjun Rampal - Paresh Rawal film will have a sequel. Gaurang Doshi, who produced AANKHEN, is working on the pre-production of the sequel currently. “It’s called AANKHEN 2,” he tells me.

Gaurang is tightlipped about the film since he’s yet to finalize the four important players in the sequel. “I can’t make a film without Amit-ji [Bachchan Sr.]. Of course, he’ll head the cast of the sequel,” he smiles. What about Akshay? “No, he’s not connected to the sequel. We have finalized two top names, besides Amit-ji, and are in the midst of finalizing the fourth. So, it’s premature to drop names at this juncture,” he adds.

Vipul Shah, who directed AANKHEN, won’t direct its sequel, since things weren’t hunky-dory between Gaurang and Vipul when AANKHEN released. “Actor-director Sachin is directing the sequel. In fact, Sachin and his team of writers are writing the sequel,” Gaurang divulges.

AANKHEN had two endings -- the first for the Overseas audiences, the second for the Indian audiences. Which end will form the beginning of AANKHEN 2? “I am not revealing that yet,” Gaurang laughs aloud. AANKHEN 2 goes on floors in November this year, along with Gaurang’s other film HAPPY BIRTHDAY, directed by Sriram Raghavan.

Fardeen takes sweet revenge

It's is payback time in Bollywood's latest Khan war episode. How else would you describe the actions of Fardeen Khan who has reportedly walked out of a film just because it meant acting with Saif Ali Khan?

In case, you thought this was sheer childishness, this is what a Bollywood source close to Fardeen disclosed to a leading Mumbai daily on Monday.

It so happened that Dad Feroze Khan had signed up Saif Ali Khan to play Vinod Khanna’s role in the remake of Qurbani (titled Kurbani). After some time, Saif opted out citing date problems.

Stung to the quick, Fardeen Khan took this act of Saif as a personal affront and soon enough, differences came out in the open.

The source who did not want to be named revealed: “Fardeen has not taken Saif walking out of his home production very lightly. What really upset him was the fact that Saif first committed and later opted out.

So, now Fardeen is retaliating and has gone and done the same to him. Their rivalry might not be at its peak but all is not well between the two.”

When asked to comment on the issue, Turani confirmed the move. “It is true that Fardeen is not doing the film any more. The film is expected to start in January and we have finalised the entire cast which comprises Anil Kapoor, Mallika Sherawat, Bipasha Basu and Kathrina Kaif besides Saif of course.

Fardeen expressed that he would not be able to do the film as his dates were clashing with Sajid Khan's film Hey Baby starting in January.”

Shilpa Shetty walks it to Tirupati

Is Shilpa Shetty heading to Hollywood? "Most certainly not! But I've headed out to Tirupati on Sunday night. I've walked up and down to the temple barefeet the whole night and I could certainly do with a spot of humour right now. The report that I'm doing a horror film called Forever with ….who is it?….yeah Roger Mende, gives me that much-needed relief."

Recovering from serious mouth ulcerations ("That's why I couldn't say much in the first episode of Jhalak Dikhla Jaa) and having just made peace with her God Shilpa is in a sober mood". Hollywood is something I've never given a serious thought to. The closest I came to doing an international project was Mahmood Sipra's Sooraj Ka Dastak which Madhuri Dixit and I were supposed to do. Now I'm too busy back home to head Westwards," says the fatigued actress.

"I'm heading home to Mumbai tomorrow. I have to shoot for Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. Coming to Tirupati has become an annual event for me. I've been doing it for four years. Believe me, I feel rejuvenated the minute I reach the holy spot. This year my sister Shamita couldn't accompany me because she's shooting for Cash in South Africa." Cash before prayers!

Salman refuses a cameo in Milenge Milenge

It’s a known fact that when Salman is your friend, he will go out of the way to help him out. But if Salman has a problem with someone, the person can be really taken for a ride. Salman Khan and Shahid Kapoor are not best of friends. And now Salman has given hints of his animosity.

Salman Khan has opted out of the Shahid-Kareena starrer Milenge Milenge. Salman Khan was initially supposed to do an extended special appearance for Satish Kaushik directed Milenge Milenge, produced by Boney Kapoor. Salman was doing this film as he developed a good rapport with Satish Kaushik during Tere Naam and with Boney Kapoor during No Entry.

Well the story goes that during the controversial Rockstars concert, Shahid and Kareena spent all their free time together while all the others were spending time together as a team. This thing did not go too well with Salman and hurt his ego. He felt that they were ignoring him. Salman being an emotional person did not want to associate himself with them anymore and hence withdrew from the movie.

Boney Kapoor has confirmed the news and has said that he respects Salman too much to ask him questions over backing out from the film. Salman was to play a pivotal role in this long delayed film. Well we hope Boney finds a suitable replacement for Salman so that Milenge Milenge can finally see the light of the day.

Shah Rukh trashes Hollywood!

The presence of Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan and Karan Johar notwithstanding, a press conference here ahead of the screening of "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" at the 31st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), was rather sparsely attended.

Whether this was due to the 9.30 a.m. slot or otherwise, the press meet at the Sutton Place Hotel attracted more shutterbugs than pen pushers and more North America-based Indian freelancers than international journos.

Even so, the three high-profile men on the panel were in their elements as they fielded questions about their film as well as about Bollywood's position in the global context.

Both Karan and Shahrukh Khan stressed that it was crucial for Bollywood to constantly participate in international film festivals in order to further its overall strategy to go global.

Karan said: "I do not come to a major international platform like this because of any immediate commercial reason. Whether I am in Toronto or in Cannes, my primary intention is to sensitise the world not just to my own film but to Indian cinema as a whole.

"We have a unique format of storytelling and we should be proud of it. But it is always a good idea to look for global exposure for the beautiful movies that we make," said the super-successful Bollywood director.

Shahrukh said: "I have been to a few international film festivals. It is not enough to merely take a particular film to a global audience. It is important for us to explain to the market why Bollywood films continue to thrive despite growing competition from Hollywood.

"Conversely, we should also try and understand how global producers, distributors and exhibitors operate and tell them that we are ready to do business with them."

But both Karan and Shahrukh insisted that Bollywood must not sacrifice its internationally recognised USP - the song and dance and high drama-driven narrative style.

"We should find our place in the world without sacrificing our intrinsic character," Shahrukh asserted.

Rumours hog Shilpa 'Forever'

Shilpa Shetty's spokesperson Dale Bhagwagar has dismissed rumours of the actress being part of US-based director Roger Mende's international film 'Forever'.

"Earlier there was a rumour about Shilpa doing a Brad Pitt film called 'Babel' and now this. Shilpa would surely like to be part of an international project in future, but as of now, she's not signed one," the spokesperson clarified.

"After attending the South Film Fest this week, Shilpa has gone to Tirupati. Returning to Mumbai, she will resume shooting for Anurag Basu's 'Metro', Anil Sharma's 'Apne' and the Sony programme 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa'," he informed.

The rumour about 'Forever' began, as the reputed international website International Movie Data Base incorrectly listed Shilpa's name in the cast of the venture and indicated that she played the character of a girl called Amrita Ledew in the film, who dies while giving birth and takes on the soul of her daughter.

Denying knowledge of who might have been behind this mischief, Bhagwagar added that he has written to imdb.com to rectify the information.

Vidya Balan is a special friend

Actress Raima Sen says she and her "Parineeta" co-star Vidya Balan get along like a house on fire.

"We are still in touch and share a great camaraderie. I have many friends and she's one of my closest friends in the industry. We catch up whenever time permits," Raima said.

Raima is playing an important role in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's "Eklavya", which again has Vidya in the main lead.

"Vidhu has made beautiful films in the past. I play a small but a significant character in 'Eklavya'," said Raima, who has several films lined up for release.

Apart form "Eklavya", which stars Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Saif Ali Khan, Raima will be seen in an interesting cameo in Mani Shankar's "Mukhbir" in which she plays Sammir Dattani's love interest.

"I play a simple girl next door in this film. Sammir is a (police) informer and only opens up to me since I'm very innocent and the only one who's not aware of what's happening."

"Eklavya" will be followed by "The Bong Connection", which depicts the culture clash experienced by non-resident Indians (NRIs), and will release by the end of this year.

"It's the first Bengali crossover film I'd say. It's about Bengali NRIs and Bengali culture and traditions."

Raima is doing a guest appearance in Rituparno Ghosh's "Sunglass" and her other Bengali films include "Khela" and "Anuranon" also starring Rahul Bose and Rajat Kapoor.

"'Anuranon' means resilience and is about relationships. All my films including this one should release some time after October."

"As for Farhan Akhtar's 'Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd', Kay Kay and I play a Bengali couple. It's basically about six couples who are on a honeymoon to Goa," she enthused.

Apropos the hullabaloo surrounding her grandmother Suchitra Sen, she thinks collecting the award personally should not be any criterion for giving awards.

"I personally feel if you want to give an award, you should just give it. My grandmother has become a recluse so why do you want to pull her out of her privacy to give away the award?"

Abhishek Bachchan on the cameo in Lage Raho Munnabhai

The unexpected has almost become the expected for Abhishek Bachchan. After the surprise appearances in Kunal Kohli's Hum Tum and Siddhartha Anand's Salaam Namaste, Abhishek Bachchan gets the audience all revved-up with his surprise appearance in Raj Kumar Hirani's Lage Raho Munnabhai.

So what gives? "Nothing!" says Abhishek from London where he's shooting for Shaad Ali's Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom. "Producer Vinod Chopra called and asked me if I'd do a small cameo. And I said yes. It's as simple as that." The fact that Vinod Chopra and Abhishek's father are working together in Eklavya also weighed in favor of Abhishek's guest appearance.

"I wouldn't call it a guest appearance. There are no guests in a film. Either you're part of a film, or you're not. Whether it was the small but significant part of Rani's husband in Hum Tum or the wacky doctor in Salaam Namaste or Diya Mirza's husband in Lage Raho Munnabhai, I play a character in the films. I don't believe in the concept of guest appearances."

Some years ago Abhishek had done a walk-on appearance in Karan Johar's Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham which was finally cut on editing table. "I had to wait for KANK to get a role in Karan's cinema." Smiles Abhishek who's in London for most of this month for Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom which teams him Preity Zinta, Lara Dutta and Bobby Deol, the last mentioned for the first time.

"As kids Bobby and I attended so many birthday parties together. It's good to be working with him at last," says Abhishek emotionally.

Ramsays to make a sequel of Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche

Sequels, sequels and more sequels are the order of the day. And the latest to join the bandwagon are none other than the horror kings – Ramsays. The Ramsays will now make a sequel to the film that created the Ramsay name – Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche. Do Gaz… was their first foray into the horror genre. The film inspired by Hammer Productions from U.K redefined horror films in India giving way to more blood-curdle and gore and relegating the white sari clad ghost to the back seat.

“It is not a remake but a sequel.” says director Deepak Ramsay. “The title fits into the story perfectly that is why we are using the same title. It was the Ramsay family’s first film and though the story is different a little inspiration has been taken”,

“The film is not inspired from Hammer films and is very different from what we saw in the 70s. It will be a modern day horror film with a lot of modern special effects”, the third generation Ramsay adds on. The recording of the song has been done and the cast will be finalized by the end of this week.

Here’s to the Ramsay family. May they scare us out of our skins more often.

I am a bit of an idiot: Preity Zinta

All sorts of bizarre reasons are being put forward for Preity Zinta's sudden disappearance after the release of Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna (KANK).

"But I'm very much around, in London shooting for Shaad Ali's Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom," Preity voice tinkles across the seven seas in reassuring waves.

"You see I'm a bit of an idiot. I never take that crucial pause after a release to savour its success. I'm told KANK has raised quite a storm in India. Well, good that's what movies should do. I don't understand why some people feel Karan Johar has gone too far.

Arrey! People say, make something different. And when a filmmaker actually takes the plunge into a deeper end, people accuse him of going too far. Personally I feel proud to be in a film that pushes the envelope in mainstream cinema.

I want to hug Karan for making KANK. In fact I'll get my chance to do so in the next twenty-four hours because Karan is coming to London."

Crib about the limited space provided for Preity in KANK and she retorts, "Abhishek and I are like the anchors in the plot. I was never more scared of a role. A little bit this or that way, and my character could've toppled over.

Thank God Rhea doesn't comes across as a bitch. I constantly kept looking at Karan for reassurance. I never had to be directed so closely before. 'I don't want Preity Zinta. I want Rhea Saran,' Karan kept saying…

As for the footage, hey… we don't really live in those times any more when actors measured the length of each other's roles with measuring tapes, do we? Cinema has grown up. So have actors. KANK is proof of it."

All of Bollywood seems to have descended on London. Last month it was the combined units of Priyadarshan's Bhaagam Bhaag and Vipul Shah's Namaste London turning London into a mini-Bollywood. Now it's Nikhil Advani's Salaam-e-Ishq and Shaad Ali's Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom creating a dhoom in the city.

Preity agrees. "Indeed, you can't step out on the street here without bumping into one or the other of your colleague. I've been shooting with Shaad for two weeks. We call him Fidel on the sets. Why? Because with his beard he looks like the young Fidel Castro. Ha ha.

Abhishek has just arrived. And Bobby (Deol) was here. It was good to catch up with him after so long. We had a great time during Soldier. Bobby remains the same. Quiet and wise."

Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom is Preity's first film with Shaad. "He's so quiet and yet so much in-charge on the sets. I've never had so much fun on location… But then come to think of it, I always make sure I've fun."

Preity has always been part of progressive cinema. Her first film Kya Kehna was about unwed motherhood. Now KANK is about the cult of crumbling matrimony. "Yeah, I like being part of cinema that goes beyond stereotypes. Even my next release Jaan-e-Mann isn't quite the normal film."

How does she intend to stop the bizarre rumours about her so-called disappearance?

"Just because I'm so much out of the country, people feel free to say and write what they like. I wish I was at home so I could see what was going on. But then I'm just a paid slave. No time to savour the fruits of my job," she sighs dramatically.

And then Preity Zinta chuckle.

Why Ban Adult Movies at all

Veteran actor and censor board chief Sharmila Tagore says she is opposed to a blanket ban on the screening of adult movies on television, and instead favours a specified time slot when such films can be telecast.

"Nowhere in the world does this (a ban) happen. There's a time for adult films...a specified time is necessary for adult viewing...that would be a practical and reasonable solution.

After all, there are many adult films that are relevant and adults would like to see them in the comfort of their own homes...I feel that's a reasonable compromise. I'm in favour of it," said the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) head.

Such films "could safely be shown" between 11.00 p.m. and 4.00 a.m. "because during those hours, parents should assume the responsibility of ensuring their children are not watching television" she told CNN-IBN Devil's Advocate show, to be broadcast Sunday.

Tagore said she is seeking an 'X' category rating to permit adult films in their entirety without censoring or deleting.

She also termed as "a very bad precedent", the statements of Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi on the controversial film "The Da Vinci Code", saying she had raised the matter with the minister, who had assured her "it will not be repeated". Dasmunsi had directed the CBFC not to clear the Ron Howard-directed film till the ministry had seen it in view of objections raised by a section of the Christian clergy.

According to Tagore, under her the CBFC has no problems with clearing scenes of kissing on screen but opposed proposals by her predecessor to clear pornographic films.

She also called upon the people - particularly organisations who protest on behalf of their communities - to be more tolerant and understanding and to learn to laugh at themselves rather than take offence quickly.

Elaborating on her arguments for a specific TV time slot for adult fare, Tagore mentioned Hindi film "Omkara", in which her son Saif Ali Khan has acted.

"Obviously adult material should not be shown to children. That's the main thing. And I don't think children should be exposed to films like 'Omkara' for instance. We've certified it as 'A' and it's going to be exhibited in halls where we can restrict the audience to an adult audience for an adult film, whereas on television if a film like this is shown, children will be able to see it and we don't want that."

Speaking about her decision to refer Aamir Khan starrer "Rang De Basanti" to the Indian Air Force (IAF) before clearing the film and whether this undermined the autonomy and the authority of the CBFC, Tagore described this as a matter of strategy.

"My objective is to achieve my goal. How I do it is my own strategy... I've seen a film is released and then it runs into problems like 'Rising' did. Somebody brings a PIL (public suit), somebody brings a protest and the film is withdrawn from the theatres. That causes a producer far more anxiety and problems because the film then doesn't pick up....

"It was very positive and we took them (the IAF) along with us," she maintained.

On the issue of adult films with explicit language or explicit scenes, Tagore was very clear that these could be released in their entirety without censoring or deleting - under certain circumstances.

"There are more and more adult subjects with explicit language or explicit scenes ... Yes, I feel there should be a category for such films so that instead of cutting it, censoring it or deleting a few scenes we can show it in its entirety."

Tagore maintained that whilst the CBFC under her had no qualms about clearing kissing, provided it was aesthetically pleasing, she would not endorse predecessor Vijay Anand's proposal to permit pornographic films.

"Coming from our point of view, we've allowed a kiss if you feel it's aesthetically pleasing, relevant to the subject and not just a titillating scene ... It now depends on the producers and actors how awkward they are or how free they are. But kissing is allowed."

As for Anand's proposal, she put her foot down: "No. I wouldn't endorse that. I don't think society or the Indian people are ready for it. There's a cultural difference between India and the rest of the world."

Amrita's item song in Pak film

Actress Amrita Arora is elated about Sahara One's new show "Superstars" that she is going to host.

It marks her return to the small screen. Before trying her luck in films, she hosted MTV shows for four years.

"It's an interesting concept and I really liked it. It is a films-based show. It's not merely a dance show. We are looking out for superstars of tomorrow and hence it covers every aspect from dancing to dialogue delivery to giving them different situations to acting etc," said Amrita.

So, what is the basic criterion to judge the contestants?

"Well, apart from exuding confidence, they need to have that 'X' factor. They should have the ability to be impulsive and spontaneous as well."

The show will have two judges -- ace choreographer Shiamak Davar and the gorgeous Urmila Matondkar.

Amrita had recently been in the news for her item number in Hriday Shetty's Pakistani film "Godfather", but refuses to talk about it.

"I cannot divulge any details as of now. All I can say is that I play a Bollywood actress in the film and I also have an item number."

Her forthcoming films include Vikram Bhatt's "Red" and "Speed".

Salman's hair loss is no issue

The monster multi-starrer Salaam-e-Ishq with its criss-cross of stars from Govinda, Salman Khan, John Abraham and Anil Kapoor to Priyanka Chopra, Juhi Chawla, Vidya Balan and Ayesha Takia, could've broken an average director's back.

But Nikhil Advani seems to be made of sterner stuff. He is enjoying every bit if it. Even the notoriously undisciplined Govinda seems to be giving Nikhil a splendid time.

"Govinda is like a dream," Nikhil raves. "He's on the sets on the dot and embarrassingly apologetic if he's a few minutes late."

In fact the second-time director was petrified about how to handle the vast cast. "But it's like cakewalk. No actor has given me any grief. I've already finished shooting my portions with Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla, also a part of the shooting required with Salman-Priyanka and Akshaye Khanna-Ayesha Takia…

To watch these actors before the camera is an amazing experience. I'm like a child in a candy store greedily wanting more and more. And you know what? These guys are more than willing to deliver."

Says Nikhil, "We shoot in London, Australia and Sri Lanka. After that I'm done. I've been shooting all over North India and with Govinda and his South African co-star Shanon."

Considering how averse audiences are to cross-cultural romances, isn't Nikhil worried about how they'll take to the desi babu Govinda's affair with gori mem Shanon? "It can't be avoided. It's an important track in my plot. I can only hope it works. I'm most certainly working hard to cover all my bases."

While Nikhil has his fingers crossed, his film is bound to get affected by Salman's hair loss, no? "Not at all!" the unfazed director comments.

"Fortunately for me, my dates with Salman and his co-star Priyanka were already slotted for foreign locations later during the year. So far I've shot in Jaipur, Agra, Rishikesh, Delhi and Hyderabad…I never expected everything to go so smoothly for me."

I am no guest, says Abhishek

The unexpected has almost become the expected for Abhishek Bachchan. After the surprise appearances in Kunal Kohli's Hum Tum and Siddhartha Anand's Salaam Namaste, Abhishek Bachchan gets the audience all revved-up with his surprise appearance in Raj Kumar Hirani's Lage Raho….Munnabhai.

So what gives? "Nothing!" says Abhishek from London where he's shooting for Shaad Ali's Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom. "Producer Vinod Chopra called and asked me if I'd do a small cameo. And I said yes. It's as simple as that."

The fact that Vinod Chopra and Abhishek's father are working together in Eklavya also weighed in favour of Abhishek's guest appearance.

Aishwarya Rai at her Best!

Producer J. Murli Manohar who plans to release Jagmohan Mundra's Provoked very shortly is very pleased with his leading lady. "Eventhough Aishwarya's not dubbing for the Tamil and Telugu versions of the film, she'll dub the Hindi version for sure.

And she comes here to London in September 18 to promote our film. Considering how busy she is , we're very lucky to get her down here to address the British media," says Dr Manohar. He's extremely confident of Ash's performance and the film.

"Whenever and wherever we've shown Provoked audiences have unanimously agreed this is Ash's best performance to date. We could've released the film internationally first. But we wanted all the Indian versions to be ready simultaneously to beat piracy," says Dr Manohar who's currently shooting a Kannada love story in London with Dhyaan and Sharmila.

"It's the first Kannada film to be shot in England," says the proud producer.

Dil Diya Hai - Movie Review

It’s courageous to take an unconventional plot, but it’s imperative to do justice to it. Most of the times, an interesting concept runs out of gas due to inept and shoddy handling.

Director Aaditya Datt’s second outing DIL DIYA HAI also boasts of a rarely-seen-earlier plot. But, thankfully, Datt handles the theme with competence, making you realize that he’s climbed the ladder as a storyteller.

In his directorial debut AASHIQ BANAYA AAPNE, Datt showed that he was proficient technically, but the rough edges in the writing showed their ugly head occasionally. However, Datt seems to have overcome the deficiencies in his new film. For, it’s the drama in the post-interval portions as well as the stylish execution that makes DIL DIYA HAI a notch above the ordinary.

Not that DIL DIYA HAI is foolproof in terms of writing, but the poignant moments in the plotline more than camouflage the deficiencies. Another reason why DIL DIYA HAI works is because the performances by the four vital characters -- Emraan, Ashmit, new-find Geeta Basra and Mithun -- are commendable.

Overall, DIL DIYA HAI is no masterpiece, but it’s without doubt a watchable fare. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed!

Saahil [Emraan Hashmi] runs a travel agency with a friend [Paresh Ganatra] in U.K., which undertakes traveling and sight-seeing in and around U.K. The duo con their clients to make some extra money. Reason: Saahil needs to make money for his mother’s treatment, who lies on her death-bed in a hospital.

Enter Neha [Geeta Basra], who is on a holiday tour with her family. They book Saahil’s travel agency to guide them in and around U.K. Saahil takes them on trips around London. When Neha and her family are about to leave for Scotland, she misses the train. She is left all alone with Saahil in London, but she asks him to take her to Scotland by road.

Saahil refuses initially, but relents subsequently. During the course of this journey, Neha realizes that she’s in love with Saahil. On reaching Scotland, Saahil gets to know that his mother’s condition has deteriorated. He tries gambling for quick money, but is unable to see any way out of this situation, except one option. An indecent option…

Saahil was once asked by a stranger to sell girls to him, for which he will be paid heavily. However, he had resented the proposal then. But that’s the only option left for Saahil now. In a spate of madness, Saahil makes a deal of handing over Neha to the stranger for the money required to save his mother. The stranger works for Kunaal [Ashmit Patel].

Kunaal owns ‘Erotica’, the biggest brothel and sex centre in U.K. Kunaal is the brains behind all kinds of illegal business, right from drugs, mafia, contract killing etc. He is a cold-hearted, ruthless man. When Neha retaliates to Kunaal’s objective of making her a part of this business, he cannot but help get influenced by her innocence. He begins to discover love that Neha evokes in him.

Meanwhile, Saahil returns to London with the money and saves his mother, but he also realizes that he is unable to erase Neha from his memory and is in love with her. He also realizes the magnitude of his sin and decides to bring Neha back into his life. But there’s a problem: Kunaal.

The initial portions may give an impression that DIL DIYA HAI is one of those monotonous love stories that have been beaten to death on the Hindi screen. Girl loves boy, boy doesn’t reciprocate, he has his mother’s illness on mind… haven’t we had an overdose of such themes?

Just when you’re about to burst into a big yawn, the twist in the tale makes you jump on your seat. The protagonist sells his lady love to a brothel. Whew! In essence, the portion bears a striking resemblance to the Korean film BAD GUY, but the plot moves in a serpentine fashion as it unfolds, catching you unawares at vital points.

The post-interval portions begin at the brothel and the story actually takes off at this point. A number of sequences hold your attention in this part, like Emraan and Ashmit’s first meeting [Emraan wants to take Geeta back, but Ashmit hits back] is power-packed. Another noteworthy sequence is in the pre-climax, when Ranjeet [Ashmit’s father] instructs Ashmit to hand over Geeta to Emraan/Mithun and Ashmit revolts. The conflict, right till the climax, keeps you glued to the screen.

But there are minor hiccups in an otherwise absorbing screenplay. How does Ashmit develop feelings for Geeta so suddenly? There should’ve been a scene or two to justify the one-sided feelings. Also, Emraan escaping with Geeta from the brothel and taking on an army of Ashmit’s sidekicks single-handedly is difficult to absorb.

Moreover, Mithun breaking into a song at a crucial juncture is another flaw. Firstly, it’s really odd to see Mithun break into a song and two, a song at this juncture reminds you of Bollywood of 1980s, when actors broke into songs, whether or not the situation demanded.

Aaditya Datt shows a vast improvement as a storyteller. Save for minor hiccups in the screenplay, Datt handles the complex subject with supreme confidence, belying the fact that this is his second film. A number of dramatic sequences are well executed and elevate the film to the watchable status.

Himesh Reshammiya’s music is not at par with the hit score of AASHIQ BANAYA AAPNE, but a couple of tracks stand out nonetheless. ‘Dil Diya’ is the best track; both the versions [Ashmit-Geeta and the remix version at the end titles] are notable. ‘Mile Ho Tum To’ is another tuneful composition and the orchestration is striking. Cinematography [Attar Singh Saini] is of standard. The outdoor camerawork is more appealing.

DIL DIYA HAI is embellished with superior performances, with Emraan topping the list. Emraan has been consistently good, but DIL DIYA HAI gives him scope to play a serious guy all through, which he handles with effortless ease. This easily ranks amongst his finest works. Ashmit is a revelation. Cast in a negative role, the actor evokes terror and hatred due to his effective portrayal.

Newcomer Geeta Basra not only looks alluring, but also acts with confidence. She handles her part like a seasoned performer. Only thing, she should go easy on her makeup. Mithun is likable this time. The veteran is restrained and that works to the advantage.

Kitu Gidwani is wasted. Paresh Ganatra [seen in NO ENTRY last] hams. Ranjeet, Sandeep Mehta [Geeta’s father] as well as the woman playing Geeta’s sister are adequate. Udita Goswami [sp. app.] sizzles in the opening track of the film.

On the whole, DIL DIYA HAI has decent merits and an offbeat storyline that should appeal to the youth mainly. At the box-office, the merits as well as the reasonable pricing should ensure a safe and smooth ride for the film.

Naksha - Movie Review

The general impression about NAKSHA is, it’s a rip-off of an Indiana Jones film. The Harrison Ford trilogy, which entertained millions of moviegoers worldwide in 1980s, is said to be the original source for Sachin Bajaj’s directorial debut.

That could be true!

NAKSHA belongs to the Indiana Jones variety, but Bajaj combines Indian mythology with adventure and comes up with a new recipe altogether. And the outcome is as invigorating and revitalizing as a cup of hot coffee.

Frankly, a film like NAKSHA transports you to your adolescent years, when browsing the adventure novels and comics was your favorite pastime. It’s the form of cinema that we’d forgotten in the hurly-burly world of meaningless entertainers. Dream merchants are either busy wooing the NRIs or multiplex junta. What happens to the masses then, who yearn for a desi film with loads of entertainment?

Adventure movies have been attempted in Bollywood earlier and NAKSHA is not the first of its kind in India. But NAKSHA comes at a time when adventure movies are as good as extinct in Bollywood. And that is its USP. The voyage -- in dense forests, high mountains and deep ravines -- as also the death-defying stunts compel you to pinch yourself, are you really watching a Hindi film?

Stylishly executed with loads of money spent on attaining the results, NAKSHA comes across as a thoroughly enjoyable joyride. Sure, it has its lows, but the highs are so omnipotent that you can’t help but let the kid in you get captivated by this adventure.

Most importantly, NAKSHA heralds the birth of a supremely talented storyteller Sachin Bajaj, who, aided by his two lieutenants, writers Milap Zaveri and Tushar Hiranandani, tells you a story that has ample old-world charm, but is yet modern and believable.

To sum up, the pre-release expectations from NAKSHA may be low, but the film surprises you once the adventure begins. It’s not only high on gloss, but also entertainment.

For centuries men have been in quest of the secrets of our past. Hidden treasures, fables, myths, all have driven generations to dedicate their life in such pursuits. The greed of glory and power or the thirst of knowledge, whatever the reason may be… lives have been lost but some secrets have remained secrets!

NAKSHA starts with the search of one such man, an archeologist named Professor Kapil Malhotra [Trilok Malhotra], who prefers to die with the ancient map, rather than let it fall into the hands of evil [Jackie Shroff]. Years later, his son Vicky [Vivek Oberoi], aided by a copy of the same map that he comes across by chance, leaves on a journey to discover what it was that his father dedicated his life in searching.

The re-emergence of this quest attracts the evil forces again, as Vicky is abducted by the villain’s henchmen. Help comes in the guise of Vicky’s elder step-brother Veer [Sunny Deol], who is sent there by Vicky’s mother [Navni Parihaar] to get her son back. Vicky is grateful to be rescued, but not too happy about his brother’s mission to take him back.

Now starts a tug of war between the two brothers. Along this journey, they encounter one more ally in Ria [Sameera Reddy]. Pursued by the villain and his forces of darkness, this trio sets off on the journey to unravel the mystery behind the map.

Do they succeed in this quest? Are some secrets meant to remain hidden in the mists of time? Or do they see the light of day?

NAKSHA has bits of all the three Indiana Jones movies, but it come close to the first in the series -- RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK [Indiana Jones must retrieve the mythic Lost Ark before it gets into the hands of Adolf Hitler]. In this film, Vivek decides to unravel the mystery of the nakshabefore it falls in the villain’s hands.

NAKSHA gathers momentum fifteen minutes after it takes off, when Vivek, unexpectedly, lays his hand on the naksha. But the film gets interesting once Sunny makes a dramatic entry in an action scene. In fact, Sunny’s introduction is a highpoint of the enterprise and the masses, especially in the North and the heartland of India, will greet it with claps and whistles.

There are highpoints galore: Sunny’s fight with the midgets, Sunny-Vivek and the jeep stunt, the raft portion, Jackie’s first encounter with Sunny-Vivek-Sameera and the jump from a cliff [awesome!] and the climax. In fact, the penultimate reels are simply breath-taking and the spectacular sets only elevate the impact.

If the action scenes are without doubt the soul of the film, the director and his team of writers balance the proceedings with several light moments that make you flex your facial muscles. The snoring sequence or Vivek’s conversation with the chief of the midgets [Lilliput] are two examples to illustrate the point. Also, the mythology aspect is beautifully woven in the script and the animation [in the post-interval portions] gives the film a different texture.

There are loose ends, but they’re trivial. The erotic song in the second hour looks completely unwarranted. Was it added to provide some relief from the drama? It stands out like a sore thumb, even though its picturization is very stylish. Also, the special effects, in the last few reels, could be better.

Sachin Bajaj handles two departments -- writing and direction -- with aplomb. The film has style, but there’s substance too. This is amongst the finest directorial debuts of 2006. NAKSHA is also writers Milap Zaveri and Tushar Hiranandani’s most accomplished work so far. Their fundas are clear: Give the audience an adventure flick and pad it up with adrenaline pumping moments.

Allan Amin’s action sequences deserve distinction marks. The action co-ordinator comes up with stunts that truly match international standards. Pritam’s music is racy and at least two numbers deserve special mention -- ‘U & I’ and ‘Shake It’. The sets [Nitish Roy] are imaginative and visually striking. Vijay Arora’s camerawork is extra-ordinary. The aerial shots as well as the indoor work [sets] are splendid. Background score is topnotch.

It’s good to see Sunny in form after a long, long time. The role doesn’t demand histrionics, but star power. His presence alone elevates a sequence to a different level, but it’s the death-defying stunts that he pulls off without much of an effort that’ll win his fans back. In fact, NAKSHA should prove to be a turning point in the actor’s career.

Vivek is decent, but he tends to go over the top in a few light scenes with Sunny. Although his performance is just right, the fact cannot be denied that Vivek is a cold proposition at the box-office and that could affect the initial prospects of the film.

Cast in a negative role, Jackie plays the part with utmost conviction. Sameera is alright. Suhasini Mulay and Navni Parihaar have little to do. Ditto for Lilliput. Mridula Chandrashekhar is okay.

On the whole, NAKSHA is a solid entertainer that comes at a time when there’s a genuine vacuum of mass-appealing films. This pulse-throbbing adventure film is aimed at the masses, who should love it for its interesting plot, gripping screenplay and excellent action. At the box-office, NAKSHA should work big time in places like Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar as also in the interiors. Business will be ordinary at mutiplexes [due to the strong LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI wave, especially at Mumbai, Delhi and other metros], but single screens should be fantastic. Go for this adventure!

Aap ki Khatir - Movie Review

Dharmesh Darshan has, in the past, made films that emphasized on drama. If the discord between a newly-married couple was the core issue in RAJA HINDUSTANI, a married woman torn between her husband and lover was the crux of BEWAFAA. The one thing that remains a common link in most Dharmesh's movies is conflict.

Now, in his new outing AAP KI KHATIR, Dhamesh changes gears. He attempts a light entertainer this time. For those who're unaware, the ace director takes the inspiration from director Clare Kilner's Hollywood film THE WEDDING DATE [2005; Debra Messing, Dermot Mulroney]. Wait… Besides THE WEDDING DATE, AAP KI KHATIR bears an uncanny resemblance to HUM AAPKE HAIN KOUN as well as MONSOON WEDDING.

So, does this fusion turn out to be a delectable affair? Armed with a different theme this time around, you expect AAP KI KHATIR to be a refreshing change from the overdose of melodrama that dominates Dharmesh's films. The best thing about AAP KI KHATIR is, the light moments [in abundance in the first hour] work. But the sad part is, the drama in the second hour doesn't.

AAP KI KHATIR rests on a thin plot. Fine, that can be overlooked. But the director should camouflage the deficiency with an arresting screenplay. The sequence of events should have the power to keep you focused to the screen for the next two hours. Dharmesh establishes the plot well. The 'deal' between Priyanka and Akshaye brings a smile on your face and keeps you in good spirits all through the first half.

Just when you thought that Dharmesh had got it right this time, he throws up in the subsequent reels. In the pre-climax and climax specifically. The last 20 minutes of the enterprise act as a complete spoilsport. The culmination to the story takes the film to its nadir. The writing [Sunil Munshi] is clearly the culprit here.

To sum up, AAP KI KHATIR could've been an invigorating experience. Instead, it turns out to be a half-hearted effort that lacks the stamp of an accomplished storyteller.

Anu [Priyanka Chopra], a London-based Indian, lives in Mumbai after her break-up with Danny [Dino Morea]. But she has to return to London. Reason: Her stepsister Shirani [Amisha Patel] is getting married to New York-based Gujarati businessman Kunal [Suniel Shetty]. As luck would have it, Danny is Kunal's best friend and also happens to be on the guest-list.

Anu hatches a plan to get back at Danny and make him jealous. She hires an escort, Aman [Akshaye Khanna], to accompany her to the wedding as her new beau. The plan works gradually. But the skeletons tumble out of the cupboard: Shirani was involved with Danny after he broke off with Anu.

Meanwhile, there's a twist in the tale. Aman realizes that he's in love with Anu. But Anu is keen on Danny.

AAP KI KHATIR can be compartmentalized in two sections. The first hour focuses on light moments [refreshing; there's not one serious moment all through this hour], while the post-interval portions try to highlight the misunderstandings that encircle the characters.

The film has a couple of lively [and likable] moments. The light banter between Akshaye and Priyanka and her attempts to make Dino jealous keep you entertained. The sequences between the parents [Anupam Kher, Lilette Dubey] and Akshaye as also between the sisters [Priyanka-Amisha] are expertly handled. But all this happens in the first hour. The second half is plain monotonous and moves about in the most predictable fashion.

Also, there are inherent flaws from the writing point of view. Like, for instance, the writer doesn't bother to develop the relationship between Akshaye and Priyanka. It sort of materializes out of thin air. One moment, they are client and employee, discussing the terms of their arrangement, and the next, they're in love. It's a mystery how this transition occurs. There had to be a solid ground for them to develop strong feelings for one another.

The climax is a complete downer. The confrontation between Suniel and Dino looks fake primarily because Suniel comes across a narrow-minded individual. Agreed, his wife-to-be had a past and when she confides into him, he decides to act in the most irrational manner by creating a ruckus. Hello, should someone who was brought up in NY behave so fickle-mindedly? And why does Priyanka go back to Akshaye? Is it on a rebound since Dino doesn't love her, but loves her sister Amisha? And why does Dino broach the topic with Amisha a day before her marriage? Not happening, Mr. Writer!

Dharmesh Darshan's direction is just not in league with his earlier works, LOOTERE, RAJA HINDUSTANI and DHADKAN. The emotions don't strike a chord because Dharmesh is handicapped by a sloppy screenplay [second half]. Himesh Reshammiya's music is first-rate. The title track [during the beginning titles and also when Akshaye-Priyanka land in London] as also 'Tu Hai Kamaal' are pleasant-sounding. The latter is well filmed in a nightclub.

Surprisingly, W.B. Rao's cinematography is not at par with his accomplished works. In fact, the frames aren't as striking as one would've expected them to be. Dialogues are wonderful.

Akshaye is the soul of AAP KI KHATIR. The competent actor ignites the screen with a fascinating performance that's sure to win accolades by one and all. Priyanka goes over the top initially, but is controlled in the penultimate portions. Dino is perfectly cast; he looks suave and carries the role with effortless ease. Amisha does a decent job, although her role doesn't call for histrionics. Suniel Shetty is completely miscast. Bhumicka Singh is fair. Anupam Kher is alright. But it's Lilette Dubey who excels as the mother. Tiku Talsania, Kamini Khanna and the jing-bang [Suniel's family] try hard to make you laugh.

On the whole, AAP KI KHATIR is too mediocre a product that has some lively moments, but a weak second half [and climax] throws a wet blanket. At the box-office, the only advantage is its solo release, but the sustaining power is remote.

Jaane Hoga Kya - Movie Review

Interesting ideas don't necessarily translate into interesting films.

JAANE HOGA KYA talks of human cloning. Sure, the story is a novel experience for Indian moviegoers because a concept like this hasn't been witnessed on Hindi screens before. But JAANE HOGA KYA suffers on two major counts…
  • One, the choice of the lead actor -- to carry the baggage of a powerful script -- is not right. It's a clear case of miscasting.
  • Two, even though the plotline is its USP, it has been presented in the most amateurish manner. More on that later!

Director duo Glen-Ankush's first outing JAANE HOGA KYA bears a striking similarity to a little-known Chinese film called DNA CLONE [2002; director: Douglas Kong; cast: Siu-Wong Fan, Katherine Hung Yan, Kit Yee Yuen]. But JAANE HOGA KYA appeals in bits and spurts, not in entirety.

Most importantly, JAANE HOGA KYA has taken a long time to reach the theatres. Naturally then, the physical appearances of the actors have undergone a natural change. Besides, the film has been released without any hype or media blitzkrieg, making it an unsung release.

To sum up, the minusses outweigh the plusses!

Siddharth [Aftab Shivdasani], a young scientist from Indian Medical Research Center, wants to create another human being, not in a mother's womb but in a science lab. If he is successful, it could be a boon for humanity, else it could spell doomsday for mankind.

Siddharth has been experimenting with cloning for the past two years and has been unsuccessful. He even lost his colleague cum friend in the process. But he is confident of succeeding some day. He needs permission from the Indian Medical Research Centre and his guru Dr. Krishnan [Paresh Rawal].

There are few people who don't approve of his experiment. Amongst them is Inspector Rathod [Rahul Dev]. Siddharth is shattered when Dr. Krishnan informs him that the permission to go ahead is not granted. Siddharth is shattered and his love, Aditi [Bipasha Basu], comforts him. She also suggests that she would speak to her father Mr. Chopra [Tinnu Anand], an industrialist, to finance him for his project of creating a human clone.

After much thought and hesitation, Siddharth agrees to take Aditi's help. He builds his own lab in an old mill and starts his experiment. He first clones a mouse. In the meanwhile, Inspector Rathod gets suspicious about the sudden disappearance of Siddharth and begins to trace him.

Meanwhile, Siddharth begins to clone himself. He succeeds but his clone goes missing and all hell breaks loose when suddenly Siddharth is put behind bars for assaulting a girl at a night club [Maria Goretti]. Siddharth realizes that his clone is responsible for putting him in a mess. But he is helpless, as no one believes him that he has cloned himself, not even Dr. Krishnan.

The clone has other ideas. He wants to take over Siddharth's life and starts playing games. He flirts with Dr. Krishnan's daughter Suchitra [Preeti Jhangiani] and even impregnates her. To obtain Siddharth's project report, the clone even kills Dr. Krishnan and the blame falls on Siddharth. Inspector Rathod is furious. Siddharth is in a major dilemma.

JAANE HOGA KYA springs a few surprises. Besides the premise, a number of sequences are no doubt deftly executed. But the problem -- it's a major drawback -- lies in the fact that the clone doesn't behave like a clone, it conducts itself like a superman. His mannerisms makes him look like a robot who can brave an iron rod in his body and yet remain unaffected.

From the writing point of view, Bipasha's sudden volte face comes as a shock. But it's difficult to believe that the clone has been 'programmed' by her to act and behave in a peculiar fashion. Even if you go by the logic that she holds the 'remote control', why does the clone eliminate her in the climax? Isn't that a contradiction?

Directors Glen-Ankush are technically proficient and it shows in several well-filmed sequences. But the directors ought to know that it's the content that does the talking eventually, not striking frames and visuals. Musically, nothing to hum about. Frankly, it's the filming of the songs that stays with you more than the tunes. Cinematography is first-rate.

Aftab tries hard, but doesn't work in the complex role[s]. He looks like a college student, not a scientist or a terminator. Bipasha is passable and so is Preeti. Paresh Rawal is mechanical. Rahul Dev is competent. Maria Goretti, Tinnu Anand and Zarina Wahab are wasted. Sanjay Narvekar is strictly okay.

On the whole, JAANE HOGA KYA has a novel concept, but lacks the power to keep you glued to the screen. At the box-office, the lack of promotion as also a mighty opposition [LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI] will make the film go unnoticed.

But there's good news… Like its predecessor, LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI is a sparkling example of qualitative cinema. LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI not only entertains, it also enlightens. LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI is forward-thinking, but also makes you recall your roots. It promises lots of laughs and also a heartwarming message.

Director Rajkumar Hirani strikes a fine balance between humor and emotions. The comic portions are executed with panache, the drama is attention-grabbing and the emotional quotient is strong enough to turn you moist-eyed. The marriage of humor and emotions as also technique and content is what drives LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI to the winning post.

There are movies aplenty, but very few remain etched in your memory and possess recall value. LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI is one of those films. Indisputably and undeniably, this Munna-Circuit outing is worth the price of the ticket and more.

All you want to tell Chopra and Hirani is, Lage raho with the Munna-Circuit series!

Munna [Sanjay Dutt] is in love with the voice of popular Radio Jockey Jhanvi [Vidya Balan]. Her effervescent greeting of 'Good Morrrrning Mumbai' on her daily radio show makes Munna's heart skip a beat each time he listens to her.

Life is beautiful for Munna. His 'dadagiri' business is flourishing and he listens besottedly to the radio for hours every day, he dreams of marrying Jhanvi. There is just one minor problem: Jhanvi thinks Munna is a 'Professor of History'.

And in all her innocence, Jhanvi even invites Munna to give a history lecture to her family. Poor Munna! What should he do?

As Munna tries to sort out this minor entanglement in his otherwise perfect life, Circuit [Arshad Warsi] comes up with a bright solution. And then, the most unusual thing occurs in Munna's life. He comes face to face with Mahatma Gandhi.

LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI is one of the best-constructed, funniest and most clever comedies to grace motion picture screens in recent years. It's pretty evident that Hirani and his team of writers [screenplay-dialogues: Hirani and Abhijat Joshi, screenplay associate: Vidhu Vinod Chopra] have invested ample time on this script. LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI doesn't bear any similarity to any released film [Hindi or Hollywood] and that's such a welcome relief. In fact, the USP of the film are portions between Mahatma Gandhi and Munna, which is a brilliant stroke from the writing as well as execution point of view.

But there are minor aberrations in this otherwise smooth journey. Munna's transition to a radio jockey and playing the role of a counselor seems a little far-fetched. However, one must add that despite this oddity, the sequences between Sanju and Jimmy-Parikshit Sahni and also with Dia Mirza subsequently keep you glued to the screen, not as much for the writing, but due to Hirani's master execution.

Similarly, the focus in the post-interval portions suddenly shifts to the love story between Munna and Jhanvi and you sorely miss the maddening conversation between Munna and Circuit. Again, the romantic portions are well executed, so you don't really mind this glitch.

Hirani's command over humor, drama and emotions is exemplary. Note the sequence when Munna slaps Circuit and tenders an apology after Mahatma Gandhi tells him to; it brings tears to your eyes instantly. The sequences between Munna and Circuit are, of course, the mainstay of the enterprise. Some of the sequences -- Munna readying to participate in the radio-quiz, Munna-Jhanvi's meet in the college campus or Munna-Circuit landing up behind bars -- are hilarious. Moreover, the entire track between the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi and Munna is exceptional. To his credit, Hirani treats the second installment of the Munnabhai series with as much flourish as he treated the first.

Shantanu Moitra's music is soothing. 'Samjho Ho Hi Gaya' and 'Bole To Bole Kaisi Hogi Hai… Lage Raho Munna Bhai' are the best tracks, but what elevates the tunes is their picturization. Both the numbers are full of vibrant colors and imaginatively filmed. 'Pal Pal Har Pal' also comes at the right place and even its filming is eye-catching. Cinematography [Muraleedharan C.K.] is first-rate. Dialogues are wonderful and those between Munna-Circuit abound in wit and hilarity.

The characters populating LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI are strongly written and effectively portrayed. Sanjay Dutt lives the character of Munna. He gets the best of lines and delivers them with relish. His is a wonderful, larger-than-life performance and he knows just how to present Munna best. Watching Sanju's tour de force is one of LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI's chief pleasures.

Arshad Warsi is superb. There are very few actors who have an unmatched timing for comic scenes and Arshad ranks prominently in the list. Even a smirk or an exclamation makes you flex your facial muscles. There's no denying that Arshad matches up to Sanju at every level, in every sequence.

Boman Irani proves yet again that he's an actor with an infinite range. He's at crossroads with Munna in the second installment as well; this time he plays the conniving person who wants to usurp a mansion. He's excellent.

Vidya Balan is only getting better with every release. If she was confident in her debut film PARINEETA, she acts like a complete pro in her second outing. Also, she looks extremely photogenic in a glam role. Jimmy Shergill has a brief part and he does it well. Ditto for Dia Mirza; she's perfect. Abhishek Bachchan, in a cameo, adds to the star quotient.

Dilip Prabhavalkar [in the role of Mahatma Gandhi] is up to the mark. However, the makeup could've been better. The six senior citizens are lovable, especially the actor enacting the role of a Parsi gentleman. Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Parikshit Sahni and Saurabh Shukla are appropriate.

On the whole, LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI is a sparkling follow up to MUNNABHAI M.B.B.S. Its strength lies not just in Munna and Circuit's chemistry, but also reliving the teachings of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. Qualitatively, it's a worthy sequel and not to be missed and even at the box-office, LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI will march towards the winning post in the next few days.

I can't match Helen: Kareena

Bebo, whose performance in Vishal Bhardwaj’s recent Omkara drew critical acclaim, makes a cameo appearance in the Farhan Akhtar remake, slated for a release this Diwali.

In the film Kareena attempts to seduce the new Don with a dance sequence performed to the beat of a remixed 'Ye Mera Dil Pyar Ka Deewana', one of the two songs retained from the original film.

For those who have not seen the original Don Kareena's cameo will be just an item number. Others will compare it with the performance by the inimitable Helen.

Explaining her cameo in Idol Chat on TV show a few weeks earlier Kareena said, "Its great. I am nervous because I don't think I could ever match up to Helen aunty. What she has done is something else altogether and there is absolutely no comparison."

But why did the popular actress agree to do a cameo in Don? To relive the Asoka magic, perhaps! Well, SRK and Kapoor were last seen together in Santosh Sivan's Ashoka and she is excited at being paired opposite SRK, after a gap of five years.

Don’s preview video clips show Kapoor turned out in a gold and brocade outfit. The dance sequence is choreographed by Farah Khan while the music is by Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy. It may be recalled that in Chandra Barot's original, Asha Bhonsle was the voice of Helen on screen. This time round, the song has been sung by Sunidhi Chauhan.

'Umrao Jaan will change it all'

Shabana has added one more feather to her crowded cap. This year's Interantional Gandhi Peace Prize has gone to her.

The prize has earlier gone to the likes of Nelson Mandela and Coretta Scott Young.

"I'm quite quite honoured," said Shabana from Jaipur. "I believe they had me in mind for this award for some time in recognition of my work with slum dwellers."

Shabana is all set to fly to London later this month with husband Javed Akhtar later this month.

"It will be given to me at the House Of Lords in London 26 October. And I won't have Javed miss this moment in my life for the world," says the diva of histrionics who has three films lined up before the end of the year.

"There's Reema Kagti's Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd and Manish Acharya's The Contest. Both by new directors, both in a lighter vein and great fun to do."

She's all praise for Acharya. "He's a walking talking encylopaedia on Hindi cinema. I rate him as high as Farhan Akhtar."

But the first Shabana starrer out will be J.P. Dutta's Umrao Jaan where Shabana plays Aishwarya 'Umrao' Rai's mother. What excites Shabana is the historical significance of the part.

"My mother has played Umrao's mother in Muzaffar Ali's film. And now I'm playing Umrao's mom in J.P. Dutta's film. Isn't that neat?"

Neater still is the fact that mom Shaukat and beti Shabana went shopping for Shabana's costumes in Umrao Jaan.

"Since my mom and I have a fair knowledge of fabrics and clothes we had great fun dressing up my character."

Shabana feels Umrao Jaan will dispel JP's image of a men's director. "JP was in despair, surrounded as he was by women on the sets all the time. But you know what? They'll stop calling him a men's director and start calling him a women's director after Umrao Jaan."

The Music Review Of 'Jaan-E-Mann'

Since the day 'Jaan-E-Mann' was launched, the film has been in news across all media forums. With enterprising producer Sajid Nadiadwala at the helm, a solid trio of Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Preity Zinta forming a formidable starcast, grapevine about the generation leap in the film, Anupam Kher's dwarf act to editor turned director Shirish Kunder's directorial debut – everything about the film was always in limelight.
Except for one thing! ANU MALIK, the film's composer!
Why? That's something that you realize after you hear the album. This is because in true sense this is THE comeback that Anu's fans would have been expecting from him who has been having a rather dull period at the music charts. He was seen on the small screen with 'Indian Idol' but didn't have much to show himself when it came to his work. With 'Jaan-E-Mann' he just hits back at his detractors who had proclaimed his time in the Bollywood musical scene to be over. Because with 'Jaan-E-Mann' he creates a kind of music that truly befits the musical genre of the film. With a unique pairing with Gulzar saab to boost, fireworks were obviously expected from the film but it's a different feeling altogether when one really lends an ear to the album.
Aamir Khan did it in 'Fanaa', Akshaye Khanna followed it up in 'Aap Ki Khatir' while Shahrukh Khan has made waves with 'Don – The Chase Begins Again', i.e. by lending their voices for a song. Now Salman Khan does it too for the opening song of the album 'Humko Maloom Hai' where he doesn't sing but narrates a couple of lines that go as:
"Mohabbaton mein jeene wale khushnaseeb hain, mohabbaton mein marne waale bhi ajeeb hain; Azeem hai hamari dastaan jaan-e-mann, faaslon mein rehte hain lekin kareeb hain"
The melody that follows is unique as Sonu Nigam starts singing 'Hum Ko Maaloom Hain'. An extremely difficult number to compose and sing, both Anu Malik and Sonu Nigam make it all sound so easy inspite of Gulzar saab coming up with his trademark 'conversational' lyrics rather than a conventional prose. One can hear a variety of instruments in this marvelously orchestrated number that may sound akin to an A.R. Rehman composition but it still completely original. In the end, the song takes a sad turn and even comes close to Ismail Darbar's 'Tadap Tadap'. Grand is the way to describe the arrangements of this song which has Sadhna Sargam finally getting some due. She may be singing only 2-3 big songs in a year but while doing so she makes sure that she leaves a mark. This is what happens in 'Humko Maaloom Hai' that takes its own time to come to your lips but once it does (after you have heard it 10-15 times), there is no looking back!
It's time to have some fun now with the arrival of 'Jaane Ke Jaane Na' where Anu Malik surpasses his own effort after 'Tumse Milke Dil Ka Hai' [Main Hoon Naa]. A qawalli with a feel good factor from the very first note coupled with Bollywood musical feel, 'Jaane Ke Jaane Ne' has Sonu Nigam and Sukhwinder Singh getting into a nice little duet that has an immense bring-on-the-smiles appeal to it. With Farah Khan at the helm of choreography, expect a magical outing once again! Sonu Nigam is exceptional in the qawalli inspite of Sukhwinder's presence while Krishna adds on with his voiceover. Gulzar saab has a knack of surprising every now and then and he does that well again by adding on an English word at some nook or corner. A word about Anu Malik's orchestra - it is GRAND once again! A 'club remix' of the song comes after original versions of all the tracks are over and it turns out to be a true DJ mix with an expected add-on-the-pep effect. One may go ahead and say that the beginning of 'Ajnabi Shehar' is akin to the signature tune of 'Titanic' but what one needs to remember is that it is mainly the instrument used i.e. flute which is same and hence one could at maximum term it as a healthy inspiration. Sonu Nigam sings his third [and yet another diverse] song that could have been lapped by none else than Late Mohammad Rafi if he was alive today. The best song of the album which brings back the nostalgia of the 60s, it could well have been a song composed for a Shammi Kapoor or a Biswajeet or a Joy Mukherjee! Anu Malik truly reinvents himself with 'Ajnabi Shehar', a soulful melody which is a new experience altogether in today's music scenario and has a healing appeal to it. Loneliness coupled with introspection has been presented in a unique manner which has sad undertones but still entertains one in a big way. This is the kind of song that one may want to put on in a repeat mode, switch off the lights and go to sleep! Gulzar, Anu Malik and Sonu Nigam excel as a team and come up with a highly classy outcome! The signature tune of 'Humko Maaloom Hai' marks the beginning of 'Sau Dard' which is yet another brilliant song to arrive after 'Ajnabi Shehar'. And yes, the song again brings composer Anu Malik in a new light altogether as he applies a lot of energy in this second sad song in succession. Sonu Nigam sings fourth superb song in succession and continues to outperform himself in each song. Expect the auditorium to witness a pin drop silence when this poetic number is on. Anu Malik seems to have worked really hard on the score of Jaan-E-Mann and that shows in 'Sau Dard' which is unlike anything that he has composed in the past. A beautiful song to hear from all quarters, be it rendition wise, lyrically or musically. Especially watch out for Suzanne's voice being used to create a chorus effect a la an opera which consolidates on the grandeur look and feel of the film. Watch out for the 'Grove Mix' of 'Sau Dard' that comes after a while and unlike most remixes floating on the music stands, this one actually 'stands' out for itself and gives the track a different dimension by actually creating a groovy feel! SUPERSTAR – now that's a term that you would have observed in the promos of 'Jaan-E-Mann' that are currently on air [remember the glittery sets with SUPERSTAR written all over?]! For this stage number 'Udh Jaana....Bro', Kunal Ganjawala begins the show with Sunidhi Chauhan and Adnan Sami joining him soon. A rhythmic song that has it's opening strings coming close to the tune of guitar as in 'Aisa Pehli Baar Hua' [Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega], it has that concert feel to it that is so very needed to give it an authentic appeal. Yes, compared to the songs in the past which were absolutely new tunes, this one lags a little behind. Still one may not want to take away the euphoric feel that the song may end up creating once the choreographed version is out on the big screen! As expected the 'Club Mix' of the song comes as well that doesn't sound much different from the original which itself is high on rhythm, arrangements and a high adrenaline outcome. When Anu Malik had presided over 'Indian Idol', he had promised some of its participants that one day he would be giving them a break. He fulfills the promise by roping in Rahul Vaidya, Amit Sana and Prajakta Shukre to sing for 'Kubool Kar Le', the beginning of which is a direct take off from lesser heard 'Sanam Tum Hampe Marte Ho' ['Wajood'] that was composed by Malik himself and featured Madhuri Dixit and Mukul Dev. Well, leaving this one bit of reuse aside, the song has been given a fresh treatment throughout. A song about a man trying to woo a girl and a group of friends motivating her to say yes, it mainly takes a pep-n-rhythm route with Udit Narayan taking the lead. A situational track with Monali Thakur and Suzanne joining the singers as well, it is just like 'Udh Jaana' i.e. being good till it lasts and promising good visuals on screen. 'Jaan-E-Mann' starts off on a brilliant note and the first four tracks [along with the remix versions of 2 of them] raise the bar so high that one starts expecting a moon from an entire album. 'Udh Jaana' and 'Kubool Kar Le' are fine too but given a choice one may just want to play on 'Hum Ko Maaloom Hain', 'Jaane Ke Jaane Na, 'Ajnabi Shehar' and 'Sau Dard' and relish the melody. Anu Malik creates a music that should silence all his detractors while Gulzar saab must be happy this his lyrics are presented in a new light for a hardcore commercial film like 'Jaan-E-Mann'. 'Jaan-E-Mann' adds on to the list of must-buy albums this season and makes it a double treat for music lovers in a matter of 10 days who are having a gala time with 'Don' making a splash too! Sajid Nadiadwala has a winning score in hand that should take a flying start in the A centers and gradually start making a mark in the interiors as well!
